I first visited this shop during a samhain themed magical market they held, and it was so packed it…read morewas impossible to really browse like I would have wanted, although the market itself was lovely. I recently came back, and this review is primarily for that experience. The store itself is warm (at times uncomfortably so) but they do absolutely everything they can to keep folks comfortable while shopping including cold water, a fan by the books that is incredible, and they have some seats where one can rest if they get overly warm. I suspect the store temp itself is out of their control given the care with which they make their customers comfortable. As i wandered, Ash checked in on me several times. It was never in a way that made me feel watched or uncomfortable, and always about different products I was looking at, checking to see if I had any questions. The amount of attention felt personal but not overbearing as some small shops like this can be. We had a bit of a fun chat about crystals, which is one of his specialties. I will say the products there are high quality, and some of the prices reflect it. While some things were more than I'd prefer to spend for the item, it wasn't because the value isn't there, it just meant I couldn't buy thr whole store, although I wish I could have! I bought a statue, some items in jars, a cast iron mini cauldron because I use them for safe burning in ritual, and a fairy stone that was unique and calling me. I finished with an impromptu 20 minute tarot reading from Isabella. I have been reading tarot cards 27 years, and haven't had a professional reading in almost a long, but it just felt right in the moment. It was a general reading about my next life steps, and while the specifics are my own to hold onto, I will say that the information she shared directly reflected some very specific things about my life. I generally view tarot less as predictive and more as an exercise in reflection or reading influences, and this met that and then some. There were even a couple of times that specific things were mentioned that while I remained neutral didn't quite fit my way of being (little things like writing vs voicing thoughts), and as soon as the initial statement was made, she would say or.. and then say the exact alternative that would be more aligned with my personality. The fact that it happened at least 3 times, and that it wasn't just a series of examples but almost a self correction to what aligned with my energy, told me a lot about the connection Isabella has to her clients. In addition to the incredibly on point reading, she had such a warm and welcoming energy that I'm already tempted to plan my next reading, even though the reading reinforced my intuition about what I should be doing. Reading your own cards is great, but sometimes your opinions and bias can prevent you from considering other options. Having an incredible reader like Isabella available to give an outside read is a great tool. I will absolutely be back!

Feathered Outlaw is my go to shop for all things spiritual and metaphysical…read more I've gotten so many wonderfully insightful natal and tarot readings done there. Their crystals, candles, teas, herbs and book selections are abundant.

This is my second nostalgic bit of reviewing in a row. Except in this case I'm still working in…read morethe capacity of a college instructor, now in my 27th year of year-round teaching. I starting teaching at Merritt College in 1989 as an anatomy instructor teaching the 5.0 unit lab science that included human cadaver dissection. This work kept me interested because of the college's willingness to support the costs of obtaining a human cadaver. I went on to teach the two semester human anatomy and physiology course that I ultimately fell in love with. I've been continuously teaching this two semester sequence now since the late 1990s. The student population that has come through my classrooms and labs has been the treasure of my lifetime. When I broke my arm in 2005 and ended up in the Alta Bates Hospital emergency room, I heard a nearly continuous chorus of "Hey, Professor!" shout outs. Despite my less than happy physical status, I did have some heart warming greetings that made the process go a lot easier. Since that time I've been teaching my regular classes plus a fee-based Friday night cadaver dissection course to prepare four cadavers as pro-sections for teaching. This has been an ongoing event since 2009 and my favorite class of the week. Sort of a nerdalicious Friday night date night for 15 student nerd-ettes (mostly female students) and myself as students get ready for medical school or for body workers to simply explore the human body that they normally encounter in their clients. It's a time for applying the principles of health and lifestyle to off set the aging processes we find in our little CSI explorations of new incoming cadavers every semester. Through it all I've been a Union member, and because of collective bargaining I've slowly crept up the steps of the pay scale to obtain a reasonable salary despite being an adjunct professor for 27 years. I have seniority so I'm reasonably assured of getting rehired in upcoming years. Most of us have no tenure after many years of service, so the Union makes all the difference. I have a very mindful set of Chairwomen, Dr. McCray and Dr. Shanoski, that keep the faculty honed in on student learning outcomes and institutional outcomes. The Union is every bit as important as the administration in keeping Merritt College alive and well and working on behalf of both student success and program success. Way to go Union! I've become a very strong advocate of what remains of Union life in America.
