For a Saturday lunch with friends, this was a great little spot! Food was great, ambiance leaves something to be desired for sure. We had waffles, a burger, and a chicken sandwich. All were pretty good! They have some amazing looking cheesecakes and other pastries which we grabbed on the way out. This is also a very affordable spot! The same burger I had here would've been $5+ more at any other place. We were the only group in the place on a Saturday afternoon, which I can understand since the outside and inside decor is very outdated. I think the outside could use a face lift but even so, the owners working were so kind and everything we had was delicious. I think more people need to give this place a chance. Maybe fewer menu items (like the smoothies and such could go) so they can focus on making things quality over quantity. Food is good, but the upstairs tenants are loud and you can hear them over the music. The services was fast coming out. In total I was there for 45 minutes. I ignored the fact that of the loud noise coming from upstairs. As I was walking out I was thinking wow I had a great experience here. But then I get a really bad smell of marijuana. I looked up and the tenants window and see smoke coming out of the window. I want to come back here with my family but don't think I have that choice now. read more

I placed an order for a small get-together with family. I ordered some philly cheesesteak wraps and chicken fajita wraps. The wraps were good, mostly meat, less filler. I had heard a lot of good things about this place, so I just went in and ordered. The owner was so nice and generous; he even carried the order to my car. What a weird experience. I've heard that they offer vegan options so I was excited to try it out. I called ahead to make sure and they said yes despite the owner not being there who apparently is the one who knows how to veganize. We brought our toddler so naturally I asked for a high chair. The waitress told us where to get it, putting zero effort into helping. I walked over to get it while holding the said toddler. An older couple enjoying their meal even had the common sense to offer help. Mind you the place was empty.. I saw they had smoothies so I asked for one. She told me she didn't know how to make them. She asked the cook who also apparently couldn't. Mmmk. My friend ordered a strawberry milkshake. She couldn't find the strawberry syrup. I suggested using real strawberries. She figured it out. I asked if they had tofu to do a tofu scramble - no. The options were vegan waffles or pancakes which is better than nothing. But nothing was done without confusion or problems. I ordered an omelette without eggs - essentially just veggies with home fries and toast which was really good. We also got a vegan waffle that came out cold and half hollow. And with a side of butter so I asked if it was vegan, she said she didn't know. I asked her to ask. It wasn't.. so I don't know why it would have been sent with a vegan waffle but oh well. I just can't stand the "I don't know" answers when you're in the food industry. Go find out! Very strange service. I was told the owner's kid was vegan so that's why he offered some options but the kid is no longer vegan so I guess they are over it. Also weird because it's a lifestyle for most, not a fad diet, so it'd be nice to keep easy options on the menu. Grabbed some dinners to go on the way into town last night. Tough competition being a diner in NJ, the diner capital of the world. But the Hopatcong Diner holds its own. There's an extensive menu, maybe not as thick as some diners you've been too, but most everything you'd expect is represented. We opted for the chef salad, chicken breast club sandwich and a turkey wrap. Portions here are VERY generous. The salad probably weighed half a pound, loaded with spirals of roast beef, turkey, ham and cheese. The lettuce is crisp and fresh. This was a really great salad and more than enough for 2 people. The chicken club was just right. A sliced roasted checked breast, bacon, mayo, lettuce and tomato on white toast The fries were crisp, the pickle was crunchy and the coke slaw was sweet and tangy. Nothing fancy or pretentious - exactly what you want for diner food. Cost was $35 for 3 entrees, so not inexpensive, but the portions are large enough for leftovers and the service is friendly, fast and efficient. When a NJ diner meal is what you're craving, this local spot in Hopatcong will satisfy. read more

This place looks like it hasn't been updated in 40 years. Despite being literally the only couple in the whole restaurant, the waitress was inattentive. Food is of great quality, the service and communication is horrible. If ordering out, make sure you recheck your order.. and if you can ignore the bad attitude, very unprofessional! DO NOT ATTEMPT to use any of the coupons the diner provided, apparently after several attempts throughout Covid.. I've not once been successful- TOTAL Scam! This place is great! I had eggs Benedict and they were fresh and delicious! Made to perfection! The server was excellent too!!!!

Unfortunately, this place is kind of a mess. I've come in for lunch 3 times since my original visit, and each time have seen poor service, long waits, messy tables, and sub-mediocre food. When my wife and I went for lunch, it took more than 5 minutes just to have someone provide cutlery and menus. The wait for our food was a good 20-25 minutes (there were maybe 10 total customers in the place) and both of our orders were wrong (forgot the bacon in my wrap, wrong side for my wife). It was just a couple sandwiches, too. Nothing complicated. Needless to say, neither of us enjoyed the meal. My other visits have featured similar experiences. I had high hopes for this place after my first time, but I can't really see why I would go back at this point. read more

Sun-7-28-2019 1 pm I ordered a breakfast special French Toast. Plus Adequate off-street parking. Service immediate - ample seating. Replacement pancakes tasted a little gritty, a pleasant surprise over the usual pasty kind in some restaurants. Eggs over-hard the perfect texture. The bacon was good , not limp as I usually like it, but not crazy crackly either. The ginger/peach/turmeric tea was a delight. Minus The French Toast was inedible, even the crust was underdone. The sausages were inedible, so rank that it was like I was directly biting the pig. The butter for the topping looked and tasted like margarine. Had to add salt to everything, even the pancakes and French Toast. I would return because I do frequent Modick Park on weekends. Thanks for the opportunity to voice my opinions ! read more

This place is gross. Been there twice and the food sucked. Overcooked eggs, overripe veggies, bread as hard as a rock. They tried to charge 9 dollars for hard boiled eggs that had been cooking since the critaceous era on a piece of stale bread. My replacement meal was okay, but it's hard to mess up waffles, I've seen five year olds make them. My parents have been there 3 times and have decided it's the worst diner they've ever eaten at too. This is from people who's favorite restaurant is the outback, so that's saying something. My dad, who thinks garlic is spicy, even complained the burger was bland. The interior is super gross and old. I doubt it's seen a coat of paint since 1950. Floor peeling, tables chipped and just overall old looking. I don't expect fancy from a diner but it should be clean and well kept at least. Just do yourself a favor and hit up literally anywhere else. read more

You know how people complain that there is no place in their town USA to eat at daily? A place where you feel like Norm Petersen from Cheers when you walk in and you feel instantly welcomed and wanted? Uncle Sam's in Hopatcong is that place, right across the street from the police station and Modick Park with plenty of parking. The name of the place is after the owner, Sam, and he is a very warm, generous man who greets everyone with a sincere smile. He is patient when taking your order and if you do not see it on the menu, ask! He is very accommodating and wants to please. My husband loves guacamole with his quesadillas (which my husband raved about) and Sam did not carry it BUT the next time we came back, he had it and it was freshly made!! You could eat it just by itself by the spoonful. As a vegetarian myself, I love the omelets that Sam makes, be it the special of the day (0f which there are always a few) or make-it-yourself by choosing the ingredients, they are always outstanding! Along with the omelet comes a choice of bread (bagel, English muffin) AND home fries that are delicious. My husband changes his favorite from week to week it seems as Sam makes amazing hot and cold sandwiches and meals. This week is the Reuben. A HUGE sandwich with lots of meat. And the sides are out of this world. We are addicted to Sam's potato salad and always get a container to go as well. I have been enjoying the potato salad on a wrap with some shredded cheese and heated for a little in the microwave. Yum! Today Sam also gave my husband a side of slaw. WOW, fresh as could be, a nice texture and just the right amount of liquid, not a soupy mix. Speaking of soup, Sam always has piping hot soup in a couple of choices which my husband has said are very flavorful. I have spoken of the service and the food, what else could I say favorably about Sam's? One of the most important things on everyone's mind, price and quantity. Sam's pricing is very affordable and the quantities are always large. Don't forget to check out the cookie and brownies case as well as the freshly made bagels. Oh and the coffee? One of the best!! The ambiance feels like a school cafeteria. I don't think I'd ever go there again. The crowd was 65+ and they appeared to be locals. This little family-owned diner has become our place to go to when you want to sit "forever", or for the great food. We've had everything from breakfast to dinner, not only have never had a bad anything, but everything I've had is amazing! The family is super=friendly, and super-accomodating..,,it's really nice to see this family work together....Mom, Dad, two daughters and a son. Our picky grandson is 7....we've had birthday lunches and dinners there, and he loves it. They attend to him so kindly...he knows where the coloring books and crayons are, etc. They are patient, and a bit laid back, so if you are trying to get in a 20 minute quick bite, you should let them know. Joe (the owner and chef) told us he worked 25 plus years at a very good diner in the area, and learned to bake also.....his baked stuff is to die for. The pumpkin cheesecake was not typical, but man.,..the BEST EVER. We've stopped in late dinner time Christmas Eve.....Joe had a huge menu that I feel that rivals any fancy restaurant that night, and his crusted salmon I've since had 3 more times! The piece was huge, fresh and delicious. One of the hardest time I have w/any prepared food is too much salt....it ruins the whole dish for me.....and this place never has over salted gravies, sauces, etc. The rice pudding is good, and the prices CANNOT be beat. If you aren't looking for a fancy atmosphere, but enjoy great food in huge portions in a friendly atmosphere, then you will love it here. They are so accomodating, you can tell them every little way you want it, they are not angry people, so they are patient and Joe can make anything...vegan, gluten free, etc. My son, the pickiest eater alive (27), recommends the curry dishes. This place always takes an extremely long time. It took 35 minutes to get 2 hamburgers and an omelette. The worst part was, that while I was waiting I saw the cook cooking the food. He was not wearing a mask or any gloves. He just grabbed french fries with his bare hands and threw them in the to go container. read more

Tried this place for the first time yesterday. I had heard that it was awesome since the grand re-opening. I was very under enthused. Food was well below average even for diner food. There is almost no parking, staff doesn't seem to know the answer to the most basic questions like what kind of salad dressing do you have nor does the actual food come out as described in the menu.
