My wife and I recently went to HopCat on a Saturday evening. The place was pretty packed and the wait was 15-20 minutes. The wait staff were super nice and cheerful. The tv was playing espn 8 the ocho, which allowed me to introduce my wife to Slipper Stairs. The food, was delicious. I tried the bbq chicken Cobb salad for the first time. Elote Queso with chips was very good. Grilled cheese with the tomato soup was great. The burger was filling. The one good thing that Hopcat consistently gets right is the Cosmic fries. They're the best item on the menu in my opinion. I remember the prior name as well that's how long I've visited the many locations. As with most bar and restaurants in Royal Oak, this location can get rather busy during the week and especially on the weekend, but it's a great spot to hang out with some friends, eat some good fries snd enjoy yourself. read more

Very hit-and-miss location. Food, service, and beer selection wise. I've been in here a bunch of times with different groups of friends. Sometimes the experience is really good. Tasty food (typically one of the burgers), great drinks (wide selection of beer and other cocktails), and great service (getting us in and out pretty quickly). Other times, the food is pretty mediocre (lukewarm by the time it arrives), many beers out of stock but not marked on the menu, and really slow service. I have had their pretzel bites, not bad. Buddha bowl is decent as is the Southwest salad. I think they are better at their burgers, as my husband and friends always enjoys them when we eat here. Second time with this location, first time was when they just opened and we haven't been back until tonight. We did not have a good first experience but we have at other locations. Thought we would give it a try since it's been a while. Unfortunately they got our order wrong I asked for only lettuce on my burger and I received onion on it which was difficult to remove and I asked for mayo but received no mayo packets. Our first time in Hopcat so i didn't really know what to expect. We were greeted and sat immediately so a definite plus there. We were sat new a TV screen in the dining area, which was great as football was on. Our server was polite and knowledgeable when asked for food suggestions. Now to the con. I ordered brisket loaded fries. I received a quesadilla. I told the person delivering my food that it was wrong. Rather than them offer to go get the server to correct it, they said "it's what the ticket says".. really??? obviously your ticket is wrong if i'm stopping you before you even put the plate down. Order issues happen all the time. How you handle it is paramount. This person failed. Now i'm waiting til my server arrives back in this area to tell them there is a problem. By the time they get to us my dinner mate is over halfway done eating their burger. She takes the wrong plate gets the correct order in... but now we are just sitting. Our first visit to Royal Oak HopCat in its new spacious location. It was a good move from them. Lots more space! We both enjoyed the Double burger & included crack--ooops Kozmik fries & beer. Our server and all the staff we encountered were very friendly & prompt. We quickly got our beer, and food came not long after that. We are HopCat fans, having been in one in Grand Rapids & downtown Detroit. We really enjoy the food, great beer selection on tap, unique decor at each location & the great staff they attract. I finally got to dine-in at the new HopCat today and I'm changing my three-star review to five stars. I got the same thing I always get there, the grilled cheese, and it was nice and hot and gooey. It comes with tomato soup, which I don't like, and I gave it to one of my friends to have. The waitress was really personable and funny, and she let my friend and I try some of the alcoholic beverages on the menu before we bought a full glass, she recommended the "Rockin' Cock" hard cider for me, from Northville winery or cidery, and it was very good. The only thing I regret is that I accidentally left my leftover fries at the restaurant in the takeout container! I realized it when I was halfway down the street. We really liked the build your own old fashion menu and chose the brown sugar syrup and black walnut bitters. The Elote queso, it was okay but I'm not sure I would order it again. Stopped into HopCat on Thursday night to try out their new Olympics menu. We got the American smashburger with loaded Kosmik fries, Killer Mac, and Tikka Masala fries! The American smashburger was what you can expect from a smashburger and the loaded fries were definitely loaded enough to be a knife and fork side. Mac and cheese was delicious as always and the tikka masala fries were super flavorful! We sat at the bar and service was prompt and our bartender checked up on us even though we just got waters. One of the better bars in the royal oak area. I got the mac & cheese and the roasted red pepper gouda bisque & both were very good. This is a good location. We were seated in a timely manner and didn't have to wait too long to get serviced. Billy was a great server. He answered what few questions we had. Took his time, even though they were busy. The fries were my favorite. The burger wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best I've had. What I asked for wasn't what I received (no tomato, red onion etc). It wasn't a deal breaker but it's a plus when you can get exactly what you requested. There was a game on so it was a little loud. No complaints, it's what I expected. This is the new hopcat. Very limited street parking, nearby pay garages. Inside is a large bar area and bar tables. About 45 taps. The same standard hopcat menu. Oddly, the mens and womens room sort of cut the new location in half, and on the other side is the dining area. Which is quieter. Half the staff I interacted with were fast, helpful and friendly, the rest were not. But they have only been open for a few weeks. It is a smaller hopcat, without the cool roof. read more

I absolutely LOVE Hopcat! There isn't one in my area- they're all an hour away sadly. Visited the Royal Oak location this weekend- and as expected; it was great. Sat at the bar since it was a busy Saturday evening- and service was great. Ordered my go to- cowboy burger, cosmik fries with cheese & ranch (it's homemade!) and espresso martini. I do dislike how ranch cost extra, but it's worth it. Love the record wall at this location- makes it feel fun and looks cute. This review is specifically for their brunch. The menu is small, but looked good, so my group of friends decided to make a res for Saturday morning. There was quite literally no one else there when we arrived, and I can see why; this place has a whole host of issues. Firstly, our drinks took FOREVER. They said they were brewing fresh coffee for those of us who ordered their brunch cocktails. Considering coffee is probably a popular request, it seems odd they didn't have any even though no one was there and they hadn't been open long. But that's fine. The drink was better than I thought it would be so I was happy about that. Took quite a while to get refills etc. though. The big problem came when we actually got our food. A few of us got chicken and waffles, among varying other orders. I immediately started eating the chicken which was actually really good! But the waffle was absolutely disgusting and cold. The chicken wasn't hot by any means but it was edible. The waffle tasted like they cooked it the day before and then it sat there. My friend got an order that included fries and reported they were cold at arrival. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you every single person I was with said their food was cold. How does that even happen?! Especially when we're one of the first tables. I told our server and she was super nice and apologetic, and it obviously wasn't her fault. She offered to have them remake the waffle but at that point I wasn't interested. The server brought our check and was kind enough to have the order removed from my check which was really nice. I never expect to not pay for food I ordered, but it was a really nice gesture. I did appreciate that a manager came over to chat with me (i didn't ask for one). She admitted to me that they don't use "homemade waffles" but plan to soon? This is a huge problem to me because for 15 bucks, you should be home making everything. Otherwise, what are you paying for? I could make that at home. Hopefully they are able to get it together but I don't see myself coming back here for brunch. Their dinner is usually good but I'm scared what else they aren't actually making and are just reheating or whatever. I gave 3 stars for the great handling of my issue. read more

The Turkey Pesto grilled cheese was fantastic. I highly recommend getting the cheese sauce for $1.50 to go with the awesome fries. I really enjoyed the Blake's Keylime pie on draft. It was delicious not too strong and very refreshing. My girlfriend's and I went on a Monday night to play Sprocle trivia and have dinner.
