    Have a rice day!

Went to this place on a whim and was not disappointed in the food and service! We met the owner, Brenda, who was so friendly and welcoming! If you are in the mood for good Chinese food, check out this place!

Delicious food and incredible service. When we visited Victoria, we ate at Hope Key twice because of the amazing food and welcoming owners. We loved their Wonton soup, pork fried rice, beef and broccoli and honey ginger chicken. This is a must try Chinese food restaurant!

    Super ambiance

What a wonderful place. The food was excellent! And the owners were sooooo nice. Amazingly nice. If we lived here we would come every week. Really .... Try this place

This place is a hidden gem and it truly has made my heart feel full. The owners are INCREDIBLE, and I mean INCREDIBLE. The service is top notch, the owners seat, serve and make you feel like you're at home. The decor is beautiful And space clean And the food, well, it was all delicious Highly recommend

Super friendly owners, and the food tastes great! We're from Vancouver, and the chicken fried rice here is the best we've ever tasted. The tofu dish tasted very homemade. Nothing was too salty or too greasy. It's about $15 per entree, but the portions are big so the value is good. We got takeout at the window, and the owners threw in a little surprise bonus and fortune cookies. We felt so well taken care of lol. We will be back!

Delicious buffet and wonderful service! This was our first time there and what a hidden gem we found!

Delicious buffet! And the owner was fantastic - friendly, and really nice. My kids had bubble tea and the owner was really cute and let them choose their ingredients. The food was fresh and not greasy at all like other Chinese cuisine buffets. I definitely feel like we found a real hidden gem and am excited to go back again!

a bowl of soup on a table

I came in from out of town and was hungry for war wonton soup. I looked at reviews and although one of the restaurants was highly rated, some said portions were small and the wonton soup only had a few wontons. So, I decided to try Hope Key on Douglas Street. My experience was great. The propieter was so friendly. I ordered my soup take out and it was superb. It was full of veggies, prawns, chicken and so many wontons I have quit counting. I ordered the spicy broth as well (you can order without spice as well). I will definitely be back. Maybe again before I leave Victoria. I like supporting these local places. Thank you.

Delicious food and super friendly, accommodating staff (maybe the owners?). Truly the best Chinese food I've eaten.

Great food, friendly service and an eclectic vibe. Didn't try the buffet, but the lunch entrees were good.

FOOD Stir-Fried Dried Green Beans ($19.95) The winner is this category would be Tropical Island Restaurant on Shelbourne; however, The Cozy Place offering would be close behind it. Decent with some crunch still; you can get it spicy or not. Ma Po Tofu ($19.95) You can order it meatless or minced pork; it's somewhat authentic. It does have some heat to it (for those sensitive to spice); however, it's pretty solid! === 3. SERVICE Service was good and professional on call-in, payment, wait, questions around the menu, and when the order was ready. English was fluently spoken by the lady working the front and the man cooking the dishes behind her. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a long, narrow restaurant - your group of 6, maybe 8 could fit at one table in the front. For everyone else, you're accommodated in tables of 2's or 4's along the wall. If bringing a wheelchair or baby stroller, I would stick to the table in the front. Parking is all metered on the street - note that the city has their parking enforcement office basically across the way working until 8pm, so put payment into the meters upfront even if you're coming by to do a quick pickup!

Golden City is a real good place to dine: - Hot & Sour soup: This place has about the absolute best hot & sour we've ever had anywhere. - bbq pork: a traditionally prepared dish that was very good. - Fried dumplings: Not the greatest dumpling I've ever had...but good enough. They had a real good dipping sauce to accompany. - duck: This duck dish was real good. We certainly we like this place. Oh...and it's open later than most any restaurants around in the area!

I think it would probably be busier at lunch since they do have a dim sum menu. We ordered off the dim sum menu because I was hungry for it and they still offered it. From the regular menu I just got stir fry pea vines. The pea vines were crunchy and garlicky. They were to my liking. On the dim sum menu we got tripe, Xiao long Bao, omasum, har gow, chicken feet, and ham sui gok. My favorites on the dim sum menu were the tripe, Xiao long Bao, and chicken feet. The omasum was a bit too chewy and needed to be cooked long because I also had a hard time eating it. Everything else filled me up quickly and they were a great late night eat! Overall, Golden City is a standard place for Chinese food. The employees were nice but it's easier to talk to them if you have another mandarin speaker with you. My partner speaks mandarin so he helped me order.

FOOD We've tried a variety of things and overall it's been solid: - Chicken Corn Soup ($12.95): solid choice - Mushroom, Peas, Egg Drop Soup: ($11.95): even better! - Dumplings (10, $12.95): nice and meaty. - BBQ Pork Chow Fun: good pork, wish there was more pork; noodles OK. - Beef & Broccoli ($18.95): feels pricey but it's solid. - Assorted Meat Chow Fun ($17.95): best value if you're doing noodles! - Prawns & Snow Peas ($19.95): good option as an entree! - House Special Chop Suey ($15.95): I guess it's supposed to be veg with some meat? === 3. SERVICE We've never dined in; only gotten takeout - but the service has always been good. Like other Chinese restaurants in Victoria, the time indicated for our order to ready seems to be a lot longer than say Vancouver, Toronto, or even Honolulu. But everyone answering the phone and serving at the counter speaks English well and it seems like they can speak Mandarin also. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's spartan in a good way - big, open, and clean without the gaudy overly-Chinese decor that often accompanies the Chinese restaurant stereotype. A large fish tank at the front (likely for Feng Sui purposes) offers some distraction for younger kids. Those with wheelchairs and baby strollers should have not challenges here. The complex they are in seems to have plenty of parking - we've never seen the lot full, so that helps if you're driving!
