We camped at Kit Carson Campground, which was across the highway and across a narrow bridge, so we walked over to grab a few beers and it was delightful! They had pretty good selection of beers on tap. We didn't get any food but the menu looked tasty. We got to sit on the patio/porch with our dog, which made it so relaxing. The owner was great to talk to and was very helpful when we needed tortillas for our camp dinner. I highly recommend when you're driving through! read more

A nice little gem in Hope Valley, where there isn't really much else around. I camped with my fiancée just across the street at Kit Carson Campground, so walking over and grabbing a cold pint on a hot day was fantastic! They had several beers on tap, in addition to a fridge with bottle/can/wine options. We did not get any food, but I was tempted by the homemade baked good such as pies and cookies. Went in because it's close to home(tried once before but wouldn't serve us 15 minutes till closing) so this was our first time to try it. Burger was Ok, the gentleman taking the order and cooking need to realize that people want to come in to eat and would like to be greeted by someone that appreciates they are there. Asked about water and mayonnaise on the burger. He points to the left and rudely says "It's over there on the table". Meal came with no napkin so asked for napkins he again rudley states "they are over there in the box" Looking down in the bottom of the box and luckily we got the last two napkins. A word of advice, lose the attitude, good day. Bad day just learn to be appreciative of the people who try your location. Also...... I want to start by saying I only write reviews if they are 5 star or zero stars. This is a 5 star review (obv). Jay is a one man show at this place, which looks like a simple bar and grill, but it is actually a phenomenal bakery. I am sure he will curse me for this bc his hours are going to increase - but ask him what baked goods he has behind the bar. I am not a fan of scones usually and I would never go out of my way for one- usually dry, crumbly, tasteless- but his lemon blueberry scone has me OBSESSED. It is just slightly sweet with tons of blueberries, lemon peel, and crusty bits and a soft tender crumb inside. Its like a lemon blueberry muffin and a shortcake/biscuit had a baby all together. I come here often as it is the most convenient spot for me to go eat. I think the burgers are fantastic and the cook/ bartender/ store clerk (Jay) is one of the friendliest most laid back peeps on the mountain. The ambience is quiet, rustic, clean and quaint. It is a great chill spot for a family of all ages (they have chicken tenders, what more do children need or want)?.. Anyhow, chill pace and if you want some local fishing tips, Jay is a good person to chat with. Unfortunately they are not open on Wednesday or Thursday , my only gripe. read more

It's a sad day, and I truly mean that. The food was great, but, until today, the extras were as well. Today they wouldn't give us a glass of water. We always, I mean always, have water with our meals, and a lot of it. Today, they pointed us to the beverage case and said, '...get what you want.' I asked for water and she pointed again. Hope Valley Café and Market is a gem of a restaurant, along with the small general store inside the restaurant building. The café is located on on California Highway 88, east of Carson Pass, in some of the best hunting and fishing country the Sierra Nevada Mountain range has to offer. Oh yes, the food and service are only exceeded by the breathtaking mountain scenery... The general store is located at the west end of the building, and features beer - of course - soft drinks, ice, canned food, and many supplies to keep campers happy. The center of the restaurant/store is lined with tables, for dining comfort. The centerpiece of the restaurant/general store features a wood-burning stove, and lots of comfortable seating, to keep customers and staff warm on cold Sierra Nevada mountain days. Despite the incredible amount of snow that falls during the winter, Hope Valley Café is open every day, thanks to the fact that CalTrans plows the highway often, and keeps it mostly free of snow. The restaurant is located in the rear of the photo. I love the cozy interior! The menu offers several choices but what caught my eye was Chorizo Huevos Rancheros, as there is nothing about chorizo, or huevos rancheros that I don't LOVE! This breakfast was truly delicious, and kept me full and happy for the rest of the day. I can truly say that I enjoyed my breakfast at Hope Valley Café and Market, as the food was delicious, the staff was super friendly, and the rustic dining room, and small general store was wonderful. You don't have to be a camper, a hunter, or a fisherman to love this fine restaurant, as all you have to be is a "foodie," like I am. read more

My family and I are locals and have been coming here for years and their baked goods are fantastic. BUT the last few times we've stopped by, we've been greeted very rudely, the service sucked and the place was filthy. I don't know what's happened there, it's so disappointing because this place used to be a hidden gem and a treat for our family. But things have gone way downhill the last year and last Saturday was our final visit. We will not be giving them our business again. When we drove up the stairs had been shoveled, but not the handicapped ramp, which made it very challenging for an older person in our party to access the cafe. We also noticed some of the signs and the exterior were damaged. We'd stopped by to get some coffee, beer & baked goods; plus I was wanting to purchase a painting from one of my favorite local artists, who's work they display. The hostess started in on us as soon as we walked through the door: "Are you ordering? What do you want? You need to order something, you can't just walk around." So I stopped looking at the paintings and ordered a latte for myself, 2 hot cocoas for my grandkids and some muffins on a plate that she had out on the counter. She gave me a mocha and ONE hot cocoa. She told us the muffins were a private order and not for sale. I was a bit confused as to why it was sitting out if it was NFS and why was it not packaged to keep it fresh awaiting pick up? It didn't even have plastic wrap covering it. So we ordered several other baked goods, which she gave us in a paper bag; no plates, forks or napkins. One gentleman in our party approached the hostess, who was now at the bar regarding the shorted cocoa and my latte/mocha. He also wanted to order a beer. He sat there while the rude hostess ignored him for several minutes. When he said something to get her attention, she stated that she "didn't know we were staying". We're eating the baked goods and drinking the beverages we ordered at one of the cafe tables and you don't know we're staying for a few minutes??? So he politely and quietly asked to speak to the owner (whom he's known for years) and she came out, waved off his complaints and made a sarcastic remark. WTH??? Meanwhile as we sat there eating, we got a really good look at the place and were shocked by how filthy it was! We had to wipe down our own table, there were dead insects and cobwebs in the windows and displays. The entire place had an atmosphere of neglect. After the owner gave him attitude, we realized that our family wasn't welcome there...we're not sure why but the overall impression we got was that if we weren't one of the regulars sitting at the bar, then we weren't valued customers anymore. So we dumped our drinks in the trash and left. This is really disheartening as we truly loved this cafe and always enjoyed it's quirkiness and awesome baked goods as a treasured afternoon family outing. read more

It was so fresh and tasty. We sat inside, but they have a couple of tables outside. If you feel like it you can eat your meal on the couch in front of the wood stove. I swung in kind of on a whim and ended up buying one of the best pies I ever had! I think the owner was who helped me. She was very cool in a calm, confident, interesting kinda way. My espresso was great too. Back to the pie... my son said it was AWESOME. I really appreciated the texture and balance of the filling. They have a few roadside staples too, such as oil, power steering fluid, etc. I get the feeling they have adapted to the needs of the travelers passing by. How novel, to "listen" to people!!! I hate to write a bad review about an independent business. Owners and the people who work for them put a hard, hard work into what they do, and their return is often negligible compared to their effort. In fact, I hate so much to write a bad review that I put this off for a month. But after a month, I'm still bothered by my experience and hope the owner will see this. I stopped in for lunch and was treated rudely by the woman (I believe the owner) at the front counter. I didn't know where I was supposed to sit and I wanted take-out, so I didn't know where to go or what to do, and she acted like I should know, which is kind of odd in a tourist area. She was curt and trying to hide her exasperation, and I wasn't sure if I should stay. But I was hungry, so I ordered a BLT and while waiting, I got a piece of pie to share with my husband later and a scone to keep me company while waiting. I had high expectations for the baked goods, because Hope Valley looks like it makes its products from scratch, and since I love to bake, I love to try other baked goods and appreciate the work that goes into them. However, this was not that day. The scone was gummy, which wasn't too surprising, since its bottom was blackened crust, like it'd been cooked over a campfire. The owner saw me looking at it, and didn't say a word, but maybe that's because she was too busy telling her server how she was screwing up the service, a refrain that went on the entire time I was waiting. I heard how [server name] really needed to get it together at least six times. It did not make for a pleasant waiting experience. My pie, by the way? Five dollars for a piece of pie that was a scraped-together piece of pie. It tasted good, but. Come on. The reason I'm giving three stars, though, is because of the BLT, which had fresh, green, crisp lettuce, tomatoes that tasted like *tomatoes*, and meaty bacon. This was no Oscar Mayer bacon--this was the good stuff, and that sandwich was delicious. This was accompanied by homemade potato chips, which were a tad too greasy, but I didn't care that much because they were so tasty, crisp, and salted perfectly. However, I don't think a BLT is enough to bring me back. I don't know what was going on the day I went. All I know is, I felt, as a customer, resented. That scone, for example, was full of screw you, and the pie said, Please don't come again. I have sympathies for anyone working in the service industry, and I have even more sympathy for anyone working with tourists, but we *are* your bread and butter, and despite the great food, I won't go back. It's not worth giving my money to a place that clearly doesn't like its customers. read more

I would gladly give 5 stars for the pie. It's absolutely amazing! Huge props to the woman in back who makes it. (I think she's the owner.) I especially love the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream and a side of black coffee. (Holy moly, I want some now.) I also love the mixed-berry pie and the cherry pie. I visit every time we're in the area. We've gone three years in a row. We always support the establishment by buying extra stuff, too. We have three mugs from the place. Something weird happened this last visit, though, a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if it was an off day for the short-haired blonde lady who works at the front counter, but she was soooooo insanely rude to us. Like, unbelievably rude, for no reason whatsoever. You could feel her bad mood when you walked in the door, and then it just continued. She was snappy, barked at all of us in our party, glared at us, and made us feel super uncomfortable. It was the strangest feeling at what was supposed to be a happy stop on a fun drive to get some delicious pie. Honestly, the pie made the drive worth it (and the pie-maker in back is so nice; sort of like a Catherine Keener type), but I was really glad to not have to talk to that blonde lady anymore. It pains me to say this, but that lady came close to ruining our experience. Nevertheless, I'm so glad that this place exists and that they make delicious pie. Even with the strange experience, I'm going to keep trying to come back here when we're in the area. Please, though, if the owner happens to read this: Hire nicer people. It's that simple. read more

Glad I stopped by here on my way home a few days ago. I've passed by so many times before but I really needed some coffee. What a great surprise! The first thing you notice when you walk in is a roaring fire, yes it was a bit chilly that morning on the Eastern side of the Sierras. There are several tables, all of which were full. There are also some picnic tables outside, there were some campers enjoying their morning coffee there. The hostess brought a fresh pot of coffee out to them. While waiting for my coffee to go I saw someone eating a great looking breakfast burrito. Needless to say I ended up having a seat and enjoying a burrito. It was great with rice, eggs, sausage and some tasty salsa. I didn't see the menu but the person next to me said they have a regular breakfast menu. They also had some items for sale which you can see in the picture. There is camping just up the hill from the restaurant. So much fun to find these treasures when traveling through the mountains. They're always worth taking a minute to stop and explore. read more

Has the similar charm and appeal, but on a much smaller scale. What I did appreciate was the baker! She was on her game, baking cookies throughout the day. I bought a still warm, gigantic oatmeal chocolate chip cookie for $2. You can get whole pies from $16. Had the apple pie at the campsite and it was heaven in a tin. Huge chunks of apple, flaky crust and that homemade taste. Great spot for fishing paraphernalia, odds'n'ends and even a tiny consignment spot in the corner. There is an ice cream case, comfy sofa to lounge, small dining area and homemade aprons, etc. At the consignment area, I bought a pair of Sofft shoes for $5. Like the fact that the baker is onsite and is baking ALL DAY. Had my cookie on the road back home and the chocolate chips were still melty and hit the spot. read more

You could make a movie about this place. Carlos our greeter, waiter and chef was extraordinary! Excellent customer care and made us feel welcomed. The owner was also there sharing her fabulously aromatic and gorgeous baked goods, pies, cookies, pastries. Our breakfast was so delicious and full of fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. I had to get one of the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for later and loved it. This place is a gem with all the art, local flavor products, and other interesting objects that you'll have to find out for yourself. They also have free wifi which is great because I wasn't getting any cell service in Hope Valley. HVCM is exactly the kinda place I wish to 'stumble' upon to help create the perfect road trip. Situated along scenic Carson Pass/Hwy 88 about 25 minutes outside South Lake Tahoe, this down homey café provides an excellent pit stop for food, drinks, bathroom, pantry items & fishing lures. The not-so secret sauce is it's from scratch cooking & baking treats, pies, cookies, as well as full entrees like Bacon Cheese Burger, Veggie Burger, BLT, Tuna, Club Sandwich. And for the little nibblets, they've got a righteous grilled cheese & chix nuggets. But to me the real entree winners here are the breakfast items, which you can usually order until the kitchen closes in the afternoon...I highly recommend the savory Chorizo Huevos Rancheros! The trick here is saving room for dessert...but entree portions are big so might want to think about sharing in order to get you some of those D-licious fresh baked pies (sweet & savory options) which are available whole or by the slice. read more

Great place to stop for a hot drink on the way over Carson Pass - the vegan options are basically beer and soy latte. None of the baked goods or menu items were vegan when I visited (I'll be back in late March - will check back!). Super cute and warm inside - very comfortable. If you are traveling by motorcycle (like me) or by car - you should take this opportunity to relax, put your feet up and refresh before continuing your trip. We've come here several times as they are right at the top of a wonderful little campground that we take our RV to. The area around here is beautiful. The food here is delicious, from their breakfasts, to the burgers and especially their BLTs. They have a nice selection of microbrews and a cute little bar. Then there are the pies. The best description that I could come up with is: THE PIES ARE ****ing AWESOME! Home made apple pie? hell yes! Homemade strawberry apricot pie? yeah baby! I love their baked goods here. Located in middle of nowhere, this little grocery store and cafe is a must stop. Located on highway 89, if you blink you will miss it. Located in Hope Valley, it truly is a diamond in the rough. Have you ever been in a cafe that is off the beaten path. This cafe carries everything you may need, car oil, gear oil, battery jump start, first aid kits, fishing line, hooks, they serve breakfast, and lunch. If you want a soda, you get it out of the cooler, if you want a ice cream bar you get it yourself. At the end when you pay, you just tell them what you had. Total trust system, love it. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with home made BBQ chips. The burger was fresh ground beef, with tomato, onions, spring leaves on a soft bun. The bun did not fall apart at all, the chips were delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone and everybody. Bonus, come in fall for the fall colors, it is incredibly beautiful. read more

First...Liza is the Hope Girl...and she has been baking delicious scones, cookies and pies for YEARS. When you don't see her and her crazy head of hair, trust that she's been there all morning preparing delights. Second, if you hike, snowshoe, cross country ski, or pass through for a beautiful fall drive or on your way to wine country or cow country, this is your place for a beer, wine, or bite to eat. Burgers to breakfast burritos. Fire will be raging in winter, and the small unpretentious deck with cheap plastic chairs and simple wooden "counter" invites in summer. Two weekends ago I enjoyed a watermelon ale on that porch...and a thunder storm raged about. Simple shop for a few groceries, local art and some thrift store items are sold here. Quirky and solid. We have always enjoyed stopping here on bike rides.  The pastries are some of the best ever and always hit the spot when riding.  However, I can't understand the bitchy lady working yesterday.  After we bought food, we asked to fill our bike water bottles.  She gave me a really hard time and said "I'm not paying her for her time to fill waters."  She made similar comments to everyone else in my group.  She continued to bitch that bike riders come in all summer and want water and she just can't do it this summer. I have never seen someone so upset to have customers (especially since we were the only people there).  If she doesn't want customers, we can go down the street to Sorensen's.  I hope we can continue to stop here on bike rides.  Maybe a water fountain or pitcher or water would be a good idea if customer service is out of the question.... Bottom line - if this lady feels she needs to "be paid for her time" she should talk to her boss about her compensation.  I think don't think customers patronizing your business should be the victim of this lady's frustration with her job or her boss. read more

So sad to see what has happened to one of my favorite spots in Hope Valley for over 20 years. The Hope Valley Cafe was one of the best bakery/sandwich shops. Yes, it was recently taken over but that's no reason the "resort" can't find a decent baker and gourmet sandwich chef. Even have a local area baker deliver. Today, I purchased a pumpkin scone which was very expensive so I thought it would be like it use to be, delicious. Not even close it was gross. It was like eating cooked bland dough, no flavor at all! No love into baking that, baked with hate even. Not anything close to what this place use to be like. We have given it a couple different try's the last 12 months hoping it would get better after the pandemic. Nope. It's like going into a deserted cave with no life. Very dark. There use to be a great store with local art, photography, groceries, seasonal items, fishing stuff, etc. Now it's depressing, only ugly clothing that no one will buy. I guess the spirit of the place was the awesome baker that was there forever... The "pie lady of hope valley" is greatly missed. The lady that worked for her I believe has taken over and can't bake and is rude and mean. We were surprised she was still there truthfully. it's sad to see what has happened to such a great spot. I really hope Management reads this and wants to get it going again, locals can help! Lol I would even Manage it! just saying find someone that cares. I visited the cafe several time over a three-day camping trip at Kit Carson campground, whick is located across the highway. I found the owner and her assistant pleasant and helpful. I love these roadside eateries in the wilderness. I will visit the Hope Valley Cafe and Market again. Had the 3 egg scram for breakfast this morning -- very good. It had spinach, sundried tomatoes, sausage and cheese, plus an English miffin. Yersterday, my granddaughter and I shared a chocolate milkshake off menu. The menu had cookies n' cream shake. The counter personal was gracious enough to make a chocolate shake and split it between two glasses. read more

This review is strictly for the market portion of this establishment. So here's the story: My boyfriend and I and some friends were up in Hope Valley for the week camping. My boyfriend is a recovering alcoholic and has been sober for over a year - but on camping trips he likes to buy non-alcoholic beer to be able to enjoy himself around all of us regular drinkers. Well, for all of you non-alcoholic beverage enjoyers out there, you all should know that supplies are usually limited and go fast. So, we ran out within a few days and most of the group headed up to the Hope Valley Cafe & Market to grab some more. Here's where it gets questionable. On 7/10/10, our group walks in there and grabs some supplies, and my boyfriend takes all the N/A beer off the shelf and brings it to the cashier, a slightly built brunette woman, with a HUGE attitude. He sets it down and she says, "What's the point?" My boyfriend and his friend Alan were standing there with their mouths agape, not even knowing how to respond to such an ignorant, rude comment. First of all, what's it to her if we are buying things from her establishment? Is the snide comment necessary? Is it warranted? ABSOLUTELY NOT. If she had half, or maybe a quarter of a brain and some sort of compassion for her customers, she may have gathered that recovering alcoholics really like to have N/A beer sometimes just for the taste, and for feeling like they can "drink" with their friends without giving in to their addiction. Is she so priviledged that she's never come across anyone with an addiction? Even so, does that warrant rudeness? Our entire group was stunned, and didn't know what to say. What do you say to someone like that? Do you tell them your life story of how you almost died from your addiction, and went through terrible amounts of pain and agony trying to get yourself sober, and finally managing to turn your life around and get your health back through will-power, god and family/friends' support? This cashier went way below the belt, and shouldn't be allowed to serve customers. She obviously has no life-experience, no manners, no compassion and no COMMON FUCKING SENSE. We will never shop there again solely for the lack of brains from the cashier employed there. We hope the manager/owner sees what we saw. I can only say, that she's lucky I wasn't there to rip into her for that comment. read more

Super small menu. Slow service. Over priced. We were the only ones there at first. There was a child of someone working there that was playing in the ice machine when we got there. Later the child was asked to fill a water pitcher with ice. More playing in the ice machine and then I saw her pick up the ice scoop from the floor and scoop ice into the pitcher. Then return the scoop to the floor. Later she picked the scoop from the floor and hung it on the hook. Watched the guy get a full package of English Muffins out of the freezer and was only allowed 1/2 an English Muffin as toast. Also watched the guy get the hash browns from the freezer. Amazing breakfast. Price decent, maybe a bit larger menu, but really fresh, homemade food. We had the breakfast burrito and house eggs with home made jam, etc. Both were great. Coffee is okay for "road coffee." read more
