I love their menu. This is a really nice diner. They serve breakfast all day and their menu is varied. This is a great place if you are dining with people who want different options. I got the French Toast platter (1 slice) with eggs and bacon. It was great. I asked for extra crispy bacon and it was just that. The portion size was perfect. I was full but not stuffed. The first time I dined in was before the name changed. The service was great and the food was great, however my experiences after my first visit was completely the opposite. I've never had to wait 25 minutes to be seated and actually recognized (the place was not full either). Even after we were seated, our server was no where to be found and even after we made a complaint, there was still a wait for our order to be taken. I've decided not to dine in since then. Yesterday I did get takeout. two club sandwiches (the best) with french fries. I am so glad Lisa W. reminded me about this diner, because I've been meaning to try it for a LONG time, even pre "Hope Valley Diner" name in fact! I visited for a late breakfast on a Friday morning and the place was pleasantly full. Start your meal with coffee: they're definitely breaking the terrible diner coffee stereotype here, because it's delicious! I put in an order for the vegetarian omelet with jalapeños instead of mushrooms, fruit and an english muffin. Although the meal took a while to come out (apparently they were cleaning the stovetop--at least it's clean!) everything was delicious, flavorful and the service was straightforward. With diner prices that won't break the bank and even deals in some of the Triangle coupon books, Hope Valley Diner is a hidden gem, located off Shannon Road, and one that I look forward to visiting many times in the future. Hope Valley Diner has a great menu - definitely something for everyone! I ordered a Turkey Ruben with potato cakes as my side. The sandwich was good, but those potato cakes were amazing! To my delight, these huge potato cakes were packed with cheese, chives and happiness. I intended to share, but I had to have them all to myself after just one bite, lol. The service was great as well. We were seated right away, our drinks were re-filled throughout the meal and we felt well taken care of. I hope to come back soon! read more

I'm tempted to rate HVD higher than four stars given the unrealistic premises of the reviews thus far. I'll trust that wise Yelp users will take the time to look up Rick's Diner (exactly the same place it's always been except for the name) for a more accurate picture. Not sure why Yelp hasn't figured this out. This is our family's traditional Sunday brunch spot. There is usually a wait, but the staff is efficient and manages to keep things moving. Pasted below is my previous review from the old Rick's Diner entry: Rick's is never going to blow anyone away with they're culinary innovations. It is, after all, just a diner. but it's a fine one. I can honestly say I've never had anything less than appealing here. I'm a big fan of their fried oysters and their chicken liver lunch special (Thursdays and sometimes Fridays). And they do a great eggs Benedict on Sundays. Sides are usually really good too, especially the grit cakes and potato cakes. On nice days, it's a treat to have brunch or lunch outside. Over the last couple years that we've been going there, we've always had excellent and attentive service. It's time to service was very very slow even the second time when there were only about 7 tables been occupied. They made a mistake with my sister's order however they never admitted to it and therefore we got our food after several other people have been seated and served before our food ever came out. I've given this place twice to get it right therefore they haven't and I will not be visiting this establishment again. They have the best homemade chicken salad sandwich and fried chicken around! I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy. They have delicious homemade desserts and sides as well. Plus they serve great breakfast too and it's served all day! A great home cooking restaurant that is one of mine and my families favorites! Great food and courteous and professional staff! I called them about 2 hours before I wanted to bring my party of a little over 15 people there and asked if they could make room. They said they'd try to make it work (especially since it was the day after my wedding). The table was all set once we got there, they made no fuss about adding more people, a server from another section even gave up a table, everyone's food (which was excellent) came out just as it had been ordered, they took care of us, and we never felt rushed to get out. Sat at the counter for lunch. Had to finally ask for a menu and someone to please wait on me after about 15 minutes. Ordered a simple chicken salad sandwich with fries. Another 15 or more minutes went by before I got my food. Server just put the food down and walked away never asking if she could get me anything else. To no surprise my fries were limp and tepid at best. Waitress never came back to see how I was doing. I told the manager my fries were lousy and guess what, he still charged me for them. Our waitress was very inattentive and the wait for our food was longer than expected but at least we had beverages while we waited. The table next to us wasn't as lucky. Just had the worst customer service We asked if we could move to another table and was granted the request because it was very very cold by the window. Manager came out and said it wa difficult for the server to serve at our table. My response was it was very cold at the window could the server not walk 2 feet which was the difference to the table. This was the perfect spot for a weekend brunch! We ordered "The Big Breakfast" and a pecan waffle. The name says it all- it was big and there was more than enough food for one person alone. The bacon, eggs, hotcake, biscuit, and gravy were all delicious! The pecan waffle was also very tasty! Our waitress was attentive, the food came out quick, and the price was fair. Our waitress even offered us another cup of coffee to go! However, the best thing about this place is that they are dog friendly! They have a relaxing outside dining area with overhead fans. I visited Hope Valley Diner twice in the last couple weeks. The first time I had fried chicken. It was superb. It was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The second time I had the fried fish. It was obvious that fish is not their thing. The clue should have been that they don't even tell you what kind of fish it was. Whatever they pull out of the freezer. It was dry. Well seasoned though. First of all, the food is very good and priced reasonably. If it were only for the food, it would get a minimum of four stars. However, the last time we went to Hope Valley Diner, the waiter that we had did not seem very alert. Buy alert, he rarely frequented the table and seemed preoccupied for whatever reason. When the bill was brought to the table, I provided my charge card. He took the bill and card. It was approximately 15 to 20 minutes before my card was brought back to the table. After 5 minutes, I should have gone to see if I could check out myself. Hope Valley Diner is very open so you could see the register where they run the cards. 3 hours later we get a call from our credit card company asking if we had used our card at a grocery store in Raleigh. We had not. By all accounts this card was probably compromised at Hope Valley Diner. I called for the manager the next day and got no response. After a couple of days. I finally spoke with the manager and was referred to the owner. I called the owner's office and spoke to an administrative assistant. I explained what had occurred and just wanted to let them know that it took an inordinate amount of time to process our bill and that we had an issue 3 hours later that was none of our doing. She said she would pass along the information and have the owner call me. I called back two days later and still could not reach the owner. The owner never called me back. Common courtesy would have been to reply personally to let me know whatever she could do involving the situation regarding the amount of time passing between our providing the card and it returned to us. The food and typical table service at HVD is above average consistently...But we won't go back. I won't bad-mouth the restaurant to anybody, but I will recommend they go somewhere else. read more

On this recent visit, I stood at the register while two managers talked about some protocol around ringing up drinks. The intensity of the conversation was unreal. You would have thought they were deciding the fate of humanity. They then proceeded to take the conversation to the kitchen where it should have taken place in the beginning. Dined here this morning for breakfast with my wife and 2-year old old granddaughter visiting us for a month. Service was pretty slow for a easy paced Monday morning. Not many customers except for me and my girls so I'm not sure what was going on. Food was mediocre l. My wife's eggs were cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen twice. I have a phobia of sending things back to the kitchen but I really wanted to enjoy this meal. Waitress wasn't too engaged with our table either. She looked either high or annoyed or both. The icing on the cake was our waitress disappeared for about 20 minutes and when we look up we see her attempting to fight a patron who had dined but decided to leave due to poor service. No seriously, the manager was restraining our waitress like she was in a street fight. I've never seen anything like it. All I heard was "b this" "f that" and our waitress was cursing and yelling like a sailor. I was shocked and appalled. Other patrons were obviously appalled as well. Needless to say, we payed and vowed to never return to this establishment again. It's one thing to have slow service and mediocre food but for waitresses to be combative and fighting with patrons in front of the elderly and children was not ok. DEAD FLY IN MY BLT! Went to eat breakfast this morning and I cut my sandwich into quarters and was almost finished my first quarter when I noticed a black piece of "something" inside. I have been here many times with my family. Each time I've gotten a different dish & all dishes were very good. We've never had any issue with food. I recently had a girl's night out with friends from work. We couldn't decide where to eat & I suggested hope valley diner knowing we could not go wrong. Well, the waitress was less than friendly & less than helpful. Not a huge deal until she brought a cocktail out with the glass held in her armpit. Yes her armpit. My friend whose drink it was, clearly didn't want it but didn't want to be rude either so sent it back. The waitress again was not happy. We asked for the manager after the waitress failed to return to our table for several minutes. It took the manager several more minutes to come to out table. The manager did come after I went to the bar area to ask was anyone coming back to talk to us. Our orders still had not been taken. We finally talk with the manager & explained what happened. He credited the drink to her bill but seemed very flippant. Then a second friend who indeed liked her drink ordered another one. The waitress offered to give her the drink that was previously sent back. I couldn't believe it. I thought this was rude & nasty. Needless to say I will not go back & I'm sure none of the 4 ladies will return either. They lost a family of loyal customers & potentially 4 new customers as well.
