We had a fun dinner at Hoppy's. First, the owner/chef is a real character and took the time to come out and introduce himself. The place is very casual and a fun environment, and we thought the food we tried was good. Everything is a la carte, so you need to order your chips, salsa, guac etc... I see some complaints that the portions were small, and I thought they were just about right. Most restaurants have shrunk portions due to the cost of food. While strolling through Amesbury, I decided to stop in at Hoppy's Cantina for takeout. The place is just that, a cantina with full bar which serves up Mexican fare (handmade burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, appetizers) and drinks (margaritas, cocktails, beer). I ordered a Chicken Burrito ($10 plus tax) which was a soft flour tortilla stuffed with braised Southwest pulled chicken, rice, black beans, crema, shredded cheese, hand rolled and grilled on two sides. The burrito was well made with good flavors from the pulled chicken and the other ingredients. I would come back here for the appetizers including the chorizo bites. read more

I'm sorry to do this but it has to be said. I simply ordered queso, salsa, and chips to go. 2 of each- which consequently was $25.00 plus a tip. What a mistake. It was embarrassing. So small amount of chips and salsa especially. The salsa tasted so like out of a jar- and not even a good brand. The queso was like a strange brownish color and does not resemble or taste like queso. Had a few tacos and a cliche Corona with lime, Sean was nice enough to offer me a sample of one the beers on tap. Queso was not flavorful, Chorizo Bowl was cold and was served in a chipped bowl, Buffalo Quesadilla was just a bunch of melted cheese with buffalo sauce - not much chicken. Campfire Margaritas were overly sweet. Not sure what happened to this place but last year it was much much better and it seemed more reasonable. After tipping it cost almost $80. We had wine, beer, wings and a mini quesadilla. They are very friendly and make everyone comfortable as soon as you walk in the door. The wings were perfect in my opinion. My only negative comment is that the bathrooms are upstairs. They need an upgrade. Also ,the rest of the upstairs was dark, not comfortable for me. We will return to try something else. read more

Went to Hoppys tor the first time on Sunday with my family. The owner Sean waited on us. He was SOOO nice And personable and took the time to really talk to us, explain the menu, and recommend his favorites! We had dinner plans already but got some appetizers. We had the PB&J wings, pork belly bites, and chorizo bites. Everything was delicious! Sean even gave me one of his personal beer cans because I was craving a hazy IPA and the draft was all out. The owner greeted us on the way in. He talked his place up to high expections. So what does everyone look for in any restaurant anyway? The sign outside was so small we had a hard time finding it. Ambiance - Nice bar area, one table for six shaped like a surf board, two tables for two and a bunch of open space. Not inviting Service - Somewhat attentive considering we were the only ones in there. Food - Nothing on the nachos, queso came in a coffee cup, we ordered pork belly and never got it. I did order some during our meal but it came out after we finished eating (they did give us that to take home). Entrees included cheese and chicken quesadilla: good, special quesadilla: tasty but not enough filling, chicken burrito: good, burrito bowl: tasty but small portion size. Drinks were good. As Newburyport-er, and a Mexican food fanatic, I always wondered why we couldn't get better options. Agave, which I've been to many many times. It's good and expensive. And Mexican food does not need to be expensive. It's simple ingredients, both food and drink, so prices should not be $22 and $24 per entrée. (See BorderCafe). I went to hoppys today and was blown away. Before I even got a chance to look at the menu, the bartender talked with me at length about the various tequila concoctions they make. I had three different types of margaritas over the course of a great dinner. So many thoughtful taco creations, great apps and a solid bar experience. Hoppys is in a great location with a cute little bar and cozy warm atmosphere. The place is clean and the staff friendly. When we were there it was later in the evening on the weekend and only a few other people there. The drinks were ... potent to say the least. If that's you're cup of tea, your in luck. The tequila drinks packed a punch. As for food; I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The scotch egg was fantastic. Just ask for bbq sauce on the side. It's really not needed here. The 3 tacos I ordered were also good, but for the size of the shell they were not stuffed like in the pictures. Now for the bad. In a cantina Salsa and guac should always be freshly made, full of lime and salted well. What I got was out of a jar. I look forward to my Pork belly being lightly charred and salted to bring out the sweetness. A dipping sauce on the side would be fine, but the bbq sauce on it overpowered the flavor. In the end it tasted like bbq ham. I don't want to end on a bad note because the service was great. Like I said, it was later in the evening and maybe it was just an off night. I'm actually reluctant to share this information because I want to keep it to myself.. Hoppy is a great host, who carries only the finest quality tequila, organic 100 percent blue agave, and all his margaritas are spectacular. Ask him for recommendations for the food or the drinks.. You won't be disappointed. The menu is limited but everything is top quality, tacos and quesadilla in about five or six different varieties for each dish all of them excellent. Located in the center of Amesbury 100 yards from the circle in the center of town. This place has the pub/ bar vibe, with a large bar and big windows facing out onto the main drag. Tacos had more trash shredded cheese than pork. $4 for 2 bites of basically cheese and tortilla. they make you pay extra for salsa. Then the owner says I should've just had a burrito! the tacos are trash but accor to him the burtito, which has the exact same ingredient, is somehow better. My husband and I live in Newburyport and try to get out to dinner for date night once a week. We typically stay in town but will venture to amesbury and Portsmouth on occasion. I feel compelled to recommend Hoppy's because it is SO GOOD. We tried 5 different kinds of tacos between us and they were all delicious though my fave was chorizo and my husband loved the steak. The margaritas were outstanding. Get the peach with fresh fruit pulp! This a very cool place!! Great arrangement of wrap around bar, tables and very cool decor. Owner Sean is very friendly, outgoing and obviously hard working. All around a very good experience. Except for the food portions. We got very tasty tacos that were no where near filled enough. It was actually shocking to see how paltry the stuffing was in the tacos. I try mexican restaurants all over the place and this one is now one of my favorites. Pork with verde salsa is amazing. They make nearly everything in house. Staff are warm and very inviting. If you like hot sauce, ask for some on the side. So good. Owner is very business, restaurant and bar knowledgeable. Rather than asking what we wanted to drink, he was able to ask what we like and pick the correct thing just based on that. Highly recommend Hoppy's cantina! And definitely will be back! read more
