I think it is well curated, but leans too far into the Belgian-styles of which I don't like, though I know lots of others do. The positive is that you can crest whatever grilled sandwich you'd like depending on mood. They have lots of tvs. It's small but there's ample seating. All in all there's a good crowd . Parking is iffy. If you're in the area the bus stops nearby and it's walkable from Del Ray and Arlandria. Nick, the bartender, is a genius. I came here with my coworker for their restaurant week lunch. You got an appetizer and a grilled cheese for $15. I was surprised with how huge the apps were!! I got the fried pickles/jalapeno popper basket. It came with a good amount of pickles (enough by themselves tbh) and 4 poppers. My coworker got the wings and you actually get a basket of 6 wings! And the grilled cheese was a decent size but packed with the fillings. The crab and shrimp one was amaaaazing. So yummy!!! When I walked in it was pass lunchtime 2:30ish) and the only people there were employees. One girl seated on the back, possibly on break, and two other employees in the back and not one person acknowledged my presence. Very good experience getting carry out tonight! We had trouble finding a place nearby that was open on a Monday. Each of us got a yummy sandwich (the vegetarian option was yum) with tater tots, and also a couple of us got a side salad. The small salads are really only big enough for one person, but that is fine. They were prompt and courteous. It was clean and COVID prepared inside. I would definitely go again! I've been here three times now and I'm a big fan. Craft beer and grilled cheese is a great base and adding moonshine and a broad range of sandwich toppings really elevate it. The service is fast, the food is pretty good, and they have a good selection of beer. They're still working out some kinks--the ordering method has changed a few times and there are some confusing parts of the menu, but those are standard when places first open. Regarding food: My husband is one of those people who only views food as fuel--it just doesn't excite him. When I took him here, however, he was absolutely over the moon about the grilled cheese with turkey and avocado. The wings are large and always crispy with a large selection of sauces, the grilled cheese is delicious no matter which you get, and the avocado salad is full of flavor. If you are lucky enough to get there when they have the Chalkboard menu, the brussel sprouts are one of my favorites if it's on that week and the meat is always delicious! There's some inside seating and heaters or fire pits out back if you want to hang out, the tv's always have the big games on. If you prefer to-go, the packaging is always well done. And you can get beer, whiskey, and cocktails to-go!! If you are into beer, I highly suggest joining a Thursday night online tasting... just pick up your 4-pack and jump on Facebook or Zoom to listen to a brewer, owner, rep, etc from 2 different breweries talk about the beers you are tasting, it's always educational and tons of fun! Literally googled "new restaurants Alexandria VA" because we needed a lunch spot to celebrate our anniversary (you celebrate when you can with a toddler). Decided on this spot after a peek at their extensive beer/cider list and grilled-cheese-forward menu. The place was empty when we walked in, and it took a few minutes for someone to greet and serve us, but they only had one bartender/server on duty so he just happened to be elsewhere when we arrived. I had the rose cider on tap and my husband had a sour cider, both were great. I had the herbalicious grilled cheese and hubs had the steak grilled cheese...both were unbelievably good. Perfect, buttery, crisp bread, great balance of flavors, etc. I think my husband would have eaten two his was so delicious. Wish I still lived in Delray, because Hops and Shine seems like it would be a great neighborhood bar. Great beer list. I was especially happy to see a number of options for porters and stouts, as they are usually squeezed out of menus in this area by IPAs. They run a happy hour from 4-7 Monday to Friday with appetizer specials. Love that they focus on gourmet grilled cheeses and have multiple options for bread, including gluten-free. I opted for the open-faced tuna melt, but chose rye instead of the default sourdough. Probably one of the best tunas melts I've had. There are a few vegetarian options, the Herbalicious, Let's Shroom and Holy Cheesus, as well as salads. Wish there was better signage on how two order. As it was our first time, we were distracted by the colorful decor and walked right past the order kiosks. We ended up ordering from the bartender, which was fine though. Environment & Atmosphere: There was some condensation dripping from the exposed duct-work in the ceiling, but we managed to arrange our chairs to miss the drops. I contacted Hops N Shine a week to prior to an event asking if I would be able to reserve tables on that Saturday evening for 20-25 people. They instantly responded to my inquiry and answered all questions I had. The day of the party, everything was PERFECT! The service, drinks, and food were all amazing. I would 100% host any future events there and recommend them to anyone. As someone who lives and works in the neighborhood, it's a great spot for happy hours and dinners. And they are dog friendly! So obviously, when we saw them build out their patio space and open up for Phase 1 in VA, we were very excited. We came by yesterday for our first post-quarantine adventure and to say that we were impressed is an understatement. They have so many good drink options and I always appreciate a funky name lol. I had a porter and my friend has an ipa we both really liked them. Holy deliciousness! I was skeptical because I ordered tots. They always arrive somewhat soggy from other places, but not from Hops. They were crispy and awesome. The wings were large, crispy and scrumptious. I am not sure how great they would be via grubhub, but we did pick up. It was ready in 15 min and hot and yummy by the time we got home (about 10 min). We were in the neighborhood recently and decided to visit Hops N' Shine. They are dog friendly which worked out well for us since we had our pup. The patio area has a decent amount of seating and bowls for the pups. I found it interesting that they offered table service at the patio in addition to bar service- I'm used to other beer gardens where you order at the bar and wait for your food with a pager or something similar. At the suggestion of one of the staff (who doubled as bartenders) we ordered at the bar. Their drink is pretty inclusive, beer, cocktails, and wine. They also have a lot of beer listed. Their food includes a decent list of grilled cheese sandwiches and as well salad, chili, and hot dogs. My husband ordered the slingshot IPA and I ordered the cherry lime sour ale from Crooked Run. For food, we shared an order of chicken tenders and a turkey, bacon, avocado grilled cheese with a side of tater tots also known as the TBA. The beer itself was good. Unfortunately the food was just ok in our opinion. The chicken tenders weren't as crispy as I liked and could have used more breading. The TBA was ok, but something I could have made at home. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing. Staff was friendly but they were very busy. I would imagine it would be hard to manage the bar and serve, especially the outside area. Would I come back for a beer, yes. But I might eat beforehand. read more

Sat at the bar & watching the incompetent way they prepare & mishandle food was painful. Wanted to pay & cancel our food order, but my friend wanted to try the food. They "bait & switch," on food & drink. They didn't have 2 of the cheeses for the "pick up to 4 cheeses" for a grilled cheese. The man to my left was told they didn't have 2 beers he asked for. The menu says "jumbo wings," but they're not! We got them without the fries, which weren't ready together. I asked for them twice! The bar guy has no customer service skills & will run this new business to the ground, if he's not replaced. Adding insult to injury, the bill comes w/a 20% tip added! It's set up, so you have to change it or just sign while being watched! There's nothing unique or special that's offered that'd be worth recommending it to others. We ordered one of their speciality hot dogs and the first time it was picked up everything completely fell apart. The grilled cheese was extremely over cooked and I couldn't even eat it (I love grilled cheese). Might try them out again during the warmer weather, but there are better places in the area. I was so excited to try this place since it's the only bar walking distance from my house. Both times I went, the beer and food were great, however the bar tender was extremely rude. Each time he was very unfriendly and had an attitude problem. I'm hoping there will be some new happier and welcoming staff hired soon so I can feel at home in my new neighborhood bar.
