I hate to have to write this review, but it seems I was not able to get a resolution through emailing the customer service contact on their website. I attended the NJ veg fest a couple weeks ago where I purchased 3 products from this vendor. 2 salsa and 1 cucumber salad. I heard a huge explosion coming from my fridge this week and I found that 1 of the salsa containers exploded and the other container had expanded and looked like it was about to explode too. I've purchased salsas and pickles from other local vendors before and have never had this happen. This is extremely dangerous and made a huge mess. These should be packaged in different containers if these are known to explode. The containers weren't even open yet. I contacted the business owner for a refund on the 2 salsas considering the experience and they are refusing to provide a refund for the salsa and are insisting it is still safe to eat after exploding. This is extremely unprofessional and I hope to warn others before purchasing from this vendor. read more

On certain days of the week, you might have noticed this temporary pickle stand by the cross street of Carmine Street and Sixth Ave. According to the workers there manning the pickle barrels, they are there every Tuesday to Friday and closes around 7pm although it might be later if business is good. Horman's Best Pickles makes their own pickles. Outside of the traditional sour and half sours, which are very good and have a snap to them, they carry some more unusual flavors that are very much worth trying. The spicy pickle, which is a common stable of pickle places that makes their own in house pickles, are pretty good although it is a step below what could be found at Pickle Guys and the former Guss Pickles, now known as Clinton Hill Pickles. Nicely spicy, slightly sour, the two opposing flavors just missed the perfect harmony inherit at the places I just mentioned. There are two things that are very worth mentioning at this pickle stand. The first is their radish pickles as mentioned by other reviewers. Along with the sourness of a good pickle, this version adds a radish flavor plus the slight sharpness and bite found in them. The second one is even more unusual. The honey mustard pickle. This is one of their premium pickles which only comes in circular sandwich ready slices. This pickle comes bathed in a thick honey mustard sauce. It's both sweet and sour at the same time. Everyone that sampled this loved it and a few ended up buying a pint of their own. If you are hesitant about my suggestions, don't be too shy to ask them for samples first. The friendly workers would be more than happy to give out small pieces to try. You could buy the regular pickles for $1 a pickle, speared in a stick like a lollipop. This does not apply to their premium pickles since they come only in slices. I believe this pickle stand is only running through Thanksgiving, but until its season ends, I'm going to be a frequent customer. There is a great selection: Honey Mustard, Spicy Sour (personal favorite), New Dill, Kosher Dill, Horseradish, Bread and Butter, Red Flannel, Sour, Hot Cherry Peppers, and Pickled Tomatoes. I think they are open Wednesday through Friday. I walk by here on my way to work and it is so difficult not to stop by. The guys running the stand are friendly, great to have a conversation with, and answer all the questions you may have. I'm not a "pickle" fan by any stretch, but these are too good not to get. It is $1 for 1 pickle, $5 for a pint, and $7 for a quart - and they will fill the containers to the top. You can also taste anything you are interested in for free. Pickles have long been one of my favorite snacks, probably ever since the age of four. I've eaten a lot of pickles in my lifetime. At age 7, I had my first New York pickle - curbside at Guss' Pickles on my first-ever trip to New York with my mom. Since moving to New York a few years ago, I've eaten more pickles than ever before. I've tried all of the local, "artisan" pickles (McClure's, Brooklyn Brine, etc.), and these are hands down - HANDS DOWN - the best pickles I've ever had in New York or anywhere else. No other pickle I've ever tried has had as much flavor as these bad boys - and they offer many different varieties, so pickle lovers of all types can find something that tickles their fancy (dill, kosher dill, bread & butter, cajun, etc.). Personally, I go for the Spicy Sour pickles - they actually have a legitimate kick. Like, heavy breathing, sweat-inducing heat. These are not weak pickles. I go through a large container of Horman's Best Pickles every 1.5 to 2 weeks. Thankfully, they have a tent at the LIC Flea (and perhaps also the Astoria Flea) so I don't have to trek all the way to NoHo every other week. OK so, I totally discovered these pickles by accident... and I will say that this is the best tasting accident that I've ever had... I walked through a random park in Greenpoint and the farmer's market was there. I've LOVED pickles, olives, lemons and all things sour/tangy etc. since I was a kid so it was a no brainer to get a pickle...once I tasted them I had to get two pints: Spicy Sour and Cajun Sweet. While they are both good, Oh My Goshhh that Cajun Sweet is heaven. So much so that I finished the pint in less than 24 hours... I just contacted the owner Nick to see where they will be this week so that I can get a quart (and my fix)! I just can't go without these now that I have them in my life! UPDATE: As mentioned above, I lovedddd the Cajun Sweet pickles. So much so that I was determined to find them again. After leaving multiple comments on the owner's IG to ask where they'd be set-up in the city (and being ignored), I decided to just order the pickles off of their site. Only problem with that is that they only sell pickles by the gallon online ($45+$20 shipping). So I had to pay $65 on pickles?! Shipping was actually pretty slow. Since my pickle purchase a few weeks ago, every lunch that eat out, I'm looking for a pickle to accompany it. I almost walked right past the covered street side stand, the van full of the salted/cured cucumbers parked right behind, tipped me off. These very nice guys sell about fifteen variations of the crunchy hand held vegetable. Horman's does not have poor Pontoffel's at the helm at the pickle factory, as every bite is crunchy and packed full of flavor. I have tried their pickles on two occasions at the Rockville Farmers market. Both times we purchased the pickled green beans. The first time they were delicious and crunchy. Two weeks later I returned and got a larger batch, only to be disappointed at the inconsistency in quality. This time they were soggy, soft and tasted as if they'd come out of a can. If I ever come back, I will have to ask for a sample each time due to the inconsistency in quality. Very nice! I've always preferred salty and savory snacks, over sweets. At this point, I would consider myself to be somewhat of a pickle connoisseur and Horman's Best hit the spot! The jalapeno ones are great- I can tell they use fresh chilies. My friend is eating the Cajun Sweet Chips and said they would compliment any sandwich. I found these guys at the Rosendale Intl Picklefest last weekend. I feel like the guy who wakes up one day and realizes the grin next door is the one for him. I can't believe they've been my backyard all along. I LOVE PICKLES! But I especially love hot yet flavorful pickles; Garlic, horseradish, unique hot peppers, mustard, etc. Well Horman's has them all. The horseradish are awesome. All the crunchiness of a New, the deep rich flavor like a sour, but its horseradish, full throttle horseradish. Equally good, and proclaimed the best pickle ever by my mustard aficionado colleague who views all foods as a mustard delivery device, are the brown mustards. You've never had anything like them. They've captured the rich spicy vinegary mustard flavor of a half sour slathered in Goulden's brown. Its incredible! We ended up with two pints. One horseradish pickle that had a zing to it, and one of the sour and spicy. Both are good. These are by far the best pickles I've had, and they have some great flavors. The first time i had these was at the Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ fest, and fell in love with their bread and butter pickles. Since then i've gone back to their stand and got to try out a few other flavors, all amazing. They really try hard to fit as many pickles as they can in jar they give you. I wish they had a storefront so that I do not have to go track them down or order online.
