There is the mystique of pulling up to a restaurant on a boat, it says, you are having a high-class good old time. Once you have actually tied up your boat to a restaurant's dock, it doesn't matter how good the food, drink, ambiance or service is, because you are in full blown vacation mode and have already decided that you are in fact having a whale a time. Fortunately though, the food was pretty good, the server nice, and the outdoor table we sat at, while overlooking a parking lot with a gas pump, wasn't too shabby. I very much enjoyed my skillet o breakfast food fried up together, and my wife found her burger good, and the fries were fine. The kicker though was the huge tray o hot sauces, must have been two dozen, almost all too hot for me. read more

This place serves the best house made bacon in Minnesota. No bull. For a person who understands smoking, I can tell you the efforts Trent goes to are extensive. One time I considered if he had oversalted, but salting is tricky and sometimes it can be the beholder and I think it was me because I never thought it was oversalted in any of the other 20 times I have enjoyed it. They probably struggle the same trouble many small northern Minnesota businesses struggle with staffing, but when these guys hit the ball; it is outta the park. Breakfast, of course is my favorite. We showed up four minutes before kitchen close one time and Trent made the most delicious steak sandwich with some incredible horseradish cheese and a perfect au jus. I am not a Bloody Mary drinker, but my friend says the bloody bar is great. Thank you Trent for a great northern restaurant. read more

I understand this place is now called "Blue Moose on the Lake". I gave it two stars because at one time, long ago, it was pretty good. We stopped in today to check out the new management. The bathrooms were disgusting. The entry way full of sand, and the patio concrete badly broken up. We have no plans to ever go back. Can't the wait staff clean the bathrooms once in awhile or sweep the entry? This place is on the fast track to being gone. read more

The restaurant has changed its name to Blue Moose on the Lake. We had drinks, and an appetizer. We had wanted poutine but they were out of pulled pork, so we got tater tot nachos instead. These were surprisingly good with usual nacho toppings and mango salsa. My husband had a Reuben,and I had a salad. Both we very good. Even though there was only one waitress the service was good. The variety is more than you would expect for a typical up north spot to eat. read more

Trent is continually creating new and innovative entrees of which many are a home run! The short rib tacos with mango with wow you, the filet minion is so tender it can be cut with a butter knife and the burgers are juicy and tasty with many options to please you. Don't let the ambiance of this place send you running. It's rundown looking but the food is great. We go to Big Sandy every summer and this place has the best food in the area. The prices are reasonable, especially if you go Sun-Th. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. We were camping nearby and we wanted a break from the heat and humidity. Drove by and saw a sign for Bloody Mary bar so stopped in and sat at the bar. There were four other customers in the bar, ordering food and another round of drinks. We were not acknowledged. A big group walked in, took a table, and brought the dirty dishes to the bar, at which point a man came out of the kitchen, wiped down the table, and sat down at the bar w a beer. Still no acknowledgement from the bartender. After a few more minutes, another couple walked in and waited a bit. By this time, it had been ten minutes. The bartender went to the other couple's spot and started clearing dirty dishes and asked what she could get them. They gestured to us and said to take care of us first. But by this point we'd had enough so we walked out. We were mystified - we were obviously sitting at the bar. Was it so difficult to acknowledge us, to at least make eye contact, say hi folks, I'll be w you in a moment? read more

Consistently good food. Definitely not "bar food", which is hard to find around Big Sandy Lake. Great German entrees in addition to American food. Decent salad bar. Courteous wait staff. read more

An absolutely delicious prime rib sandwich, made the old school way, was the Thursday night special. The German chocolate cake was warm and amazing, just like grandma made. Based on the exterior, you would think it's an average "towny" dive bar, but the food is of the quality of a great Minneapolis restaurant. AMAZING grouper sandwiches and homemade soups! This is not "heat & serve" food. The Chef often carries his plated food out of the kitchen himself, checks in later to see if you're pleased with your meal. Homemade desserts are splendid too. This place has really great food! In an area where you can eat bar food at any number of places, Horseshoe really stands out. They have a solid salad bar, which is hard to come by in the McGregor area. The German inspired food is a welcome change from the normal bar menu. The waitress, Michelle, is super friendly. I honestly think they have the best fries in Aitkin County!! read more

So where do I start with the Horseshoe Lake Inn.We have been going up there with friends and family for the last 6 years as our Cabin is just down the road.This place has been great in the past but for the last couple years it is going straight down hill as the owner Trent is running people away that would like to stay there and spend money.We were there Friday and Saturday night having fun drinking and ordering food BUT we tried to order some appetizers on Saturday and the manager TONY said "you actually expected to come down here and order food"??? Kind of a weird response so we said no big deal man we will be here all night and it can take as long as it takes.His response was NO the owner is mad and will not make any more food..It's 7:00 pm..So we paid the bill and went back the cabin.Wrote a small review as a heads up to maybe treat people better and out of no wear the OWNER SHOWS UP AT OUR CABIN SCREAMING AND SWEARING TELLING US WE ARE SHITTY PEOPLE.GREAT BUSINESS MAN..LETS SHOW UP AT CABINS AND THREATEN CUSTOMERS..FFFFF THIS PLACE AND THE OWNER read more
