My Aralia Fabian (Polyscias scutellaria) tree began dropping leaves that were turning yellow all of a sudden. After speaking with Will, who is very knowledgeable, friendly and responsive, I took upon his sound advice. I apparently added fresh new soil on top of the existing soil, which ended up hurting the tree. The roots were not getting the oxygen they needed. Wowowowoowow I rarely give anything full stars but Will was a life saver, Or should I say plant saver? I had six plants and I couldn't tell if I was over watering them or under watering them. I didn't get a lot of instructions from the plant store and there's not a lot to find online to match to what my plant was doing. I knew they weren't feeling great but I didn't know how to help them. I googled and found wills company and he asked me to send him photos and I did and he literally walked me through each plan and what was wrong with them. It's save me from having to buy all new plants. This guy would do a killing if he would do Phone consulting like this. I paid him a him a consulting fee even though he said I didn't have to. He has a donate button but he should have a payment button because this guy deserves to get paid for all his amazing advice. People from all of the country could just send him photos and he could literally give advice. But he's also really nice. And you could tell he takes it really seriously. Super cool guy and I Hope he changes that donate button to a payment button and everybody starts using him, Instead of letting their plants die and throwing them in the trashcan and getting another one. I can't imagine feeling more positively about a business than this one. I've haven't received such expert, professional, compassionate help (on most any topic) before or since. If you're worried about a plant or hoping for incredibly knowledgeable advice, you've found the right person. Call Will! I have never been a plant person. I grew up in the desert, and the most gardening I've done is caring for my one extremely low-effort succulent. But my friend is planning to move across the country to live in my city this year, and so I offered to take his much-loved, years-old jade plant with me in advance and care for it so it would be waiting for him and not be endangered by the more chaotic Big Move. I really wanted to be a good caretaker, so I looked up photos of jade plants, and noticed that this plant looked straggly and sad compared to them, and it had grown some kind of white mold in its pot. Even to totally green-thumb-less me, something looked seriously off. I was following the directions my friend had been given when he bought the plant, to the letter, but it didn't get any better, and the mold was making me nervous, and I started seriously worrying that my friend would arrive in New York City to a dead plant. So I called Will. He was completely patient and friendly, even with my numerous panicky, awkward apologies for my lack of knowledge. I sent him photos of Sad Plant, and he immediately knew what to do about the mold and also asked me how the plant had been cared for. I recited my instructions, and it turns out they were the exact *wrong* thing for the plant, and it had probably been clinging to life for awhile despite my friend's religious adherence to what he had been told was the right thing. I switched to Will's care advice, and the plant immediately started looking better. The mold went away, and the plant started growing! But its roots were in bad shape, and the new growth was causing its stalks to lean out of the pot, threatening to uproot it. So I wrote to Will *again* (have I mentioned that he refused to take payment for his great advice?), with photos, and he gave me careful instructions to prune the plant for its own health. I was terrified to prune it, that I was cutting off so many of its hard-won leaves and I would leave sad stumpy stalks that would die. But Will was reassuring, and of course he was absolutely right - where there were long bare stalks and wrinkly leaves at the ends, there are now short, sturdy stalks with adorable clusters of bright shiny baby leaves growing! I am now excited to check on my friend's plant each day, and happy to imagine reuniting it, healthy and beautiful, with its owner. I'm a COVID houseplant collector. I had zero plants pre-COVID. I did a lot of 'research' for each one of my plants and joined a couple of Facebook houseplant groups for advice. I noticed Will giving advice on one of the groups and he seemed to be very knowledgeable. Now that I have direct access to Will's advice via email, I never search those Facebook groups for advice. One thing Will says, and I learned he's right, is that advice from most people online is either wrong or just unreliable. It took me a while to understand this, but since getting advice from Will about my specific plants, I think how silly I was to listen to advice from people who didn't know my plant's size, pot size, pot material, humidity, access to light, etc. You can't necessarily follow the 'always' and 'never' rules people tell you about certain plants because they don't know your specific conditions. For example, my many zz plants, that people say never to water more than you pay your rent, I've found dry out anywhere from five days to two weeks! I was letting my zz plants dry out too long. No wonder they were like statues and never grew! Even w/Will's advice, keep in mind you still need to be educated about each type of plant you have. The biggest thing I've learned from Will is that, generally, houseplant care is so basic! I was overcomplicating it. It's unbelievable that Will gives out advice for free over email. Where do I begin in giving Will praises?!!! I repotted my 7 year old Pachira Aquatica and it soon started to die rapidly. You can read a ton of articles online or consult books, but getting a live person to answer specific questions about your plant is next to impossible. Will is really great. I ended up making a donation on his page later because I was so happy with the advice I received. After a short phone discussion with Will and learning that this was a consultation service, I sent in some photos of my dying Alocasia plant per his request. He then called me back right away with recommendations for the correct amount of watering, sunlight exposure, and possibly repotting. I contacted Horticultural Help when I noticed my houseplant's leaves were changing colors. I had read the business's five star reviews by other Yelpers and now I'm writing one, as well. I spoke with Will, the friendly owner, briefly in the morning and he asked me a few questions and to email him a pic of my houseplant. Incredible guy. Spoke with me for ~20 minutes to give me advice on my indoor plants. Asked a lot of good questions and was very patient. PRO TIP: never take a an indoor plant out of its plastic pot that it comes in when you purchase. Also, do not add soil. Instead, put that plastic pot right into a nice decorative planter. Then you know exactly how much to water (until you hear it trickle out the bottom) vs having to guess/ballpark it.
