FOOD (3/5) - Pork Katsu Cutlet Lunch Special (Main, $13.95, 3/5) - Could've been better. Pork was cooked carelessly - some way overcooked, crisped into oblivion such that the meat was turned dark brown and dry, while some were passable with breading falling off. Spring roll was mushy, and rice was put in a hurry. Side salad and california rolls were decent and miso soup was just there. They overall tasted alright and it is a good value esp. with soup & salad. I wished they would put 10% more and charge $16 instead because quantity left me wanting. - Hamachi and Salmon nigiris (Main, $2.50/pc, 4/5) - I had to try their sushi as it looked nice and fresh right in front of me. Both did not disappoint: fresh & silky fish with rice just right. They weren't out of the world though and slightly expensive for what they were. Overall I left satisfied, but I also spent close to $25 w/ tax just for myself because lunch special quantity was slightly lacking and I sub'd with expen$ive sushi. Pretty good food. I like their chicken katsu, fried dumplings, sushi, fried rice, etc. Hikaru and Osaka are literally across the street from each other and both have many of the same menu items. It was my first time going to this establishment and I wanted to be able to find a new place to be able to experience Ramen especially a pork flavored soup base Ramen. I am so pleased to find an authentic Japanese restaurant so close to my home. Those farther away on Oak St and Norwood have come down in quality over time. I've ordered lunch delivery here several times with my colleagues and my experience has not been all that great. They're super stingy with the pork cutlet (donkatsu) sauce and it annoys me how they put all the rolls in one container for everyone's rather than separating. It causes a lot of confusion because not everyone will eat together. Last time, someone else accidentally took and ate all my rolls and I was not happy. I ordered their beef yaki udon last week and it was full of vegetables and barely any beef in it. If you were gonna fill it up w veggies, why do you even offer beef pork or chicken option? Come to Hikaru for the AYCE sushi. For children 12 and under, it will only cost $12.95. For all other ages, it will be $19.95. They don't have many sushi chefs and the two that were working when we went were working at a snail's pace so make sure you allot enough time if you're on a schedule. What totally weirded me out was the fact that we sat at the sushi bar yet had to order directly from the waiter. The AYCE menu includes a number of appetizer options, rolls and nigiri. Their nigiri are oddly super small which only meant we had to order more than usual. You can play dumb and ask for less rice but they will also give you less of the sashimi so the rice to sashimi proportion is equal. The sashimi tasted average. It definitely wasn't fresh. Out of all the rolls we had, I'd recommend the Mt. Fuji Roll. It's a cut roll with spicy shrimp and eel and topped with tempura flakes. The mixture of the spicy shrimp with the sweet eel sauce and the texture of the crunchy tempura flakes all came together wonderfully. What was the most disappointing was the Rainbow Roll. The roll is supposed to be topped with sashimi and avocado but it was more so covered with avocado. Not to mention the roll was already stuffed with some of it. A bit of a disappointment since it was the last thing we ordered. With the price point and all of the options you can choose from, I'd have to say this place isn't so bad. First off, I think I'm being generous with 1 Star, but it's the least you can give to give a review. My daughter & I walk in at its maybe 5:10 or so. We had someplace to be, so we needed to have an early dinner. We were literally the only customers in there. I order her Philadelphia rolls w/ avocado instead of cucumber. I order the all you can eat as it will be quicker. Their menu is quite limited and items aren't described properly. For example, the Mexican roll had crabstick as one of the main "fish" in the roll, but crab wasn't mentioned as in the description of 1 of the ingredients. So, we are waiting for what feels like eternity. I get up and see her rolls just sitting out and ask if they can give them to her so that she can start eating. The waiter says, "yes," but continues to do nothing as they sit there. My daughter asks for a fork and the waiting stands there for 5 minutes doing nothing, until I ask again for the fork! They still had the cucumber in the roll. They charge $2 or $3 to add avocado, but didn't mention this when I ordered. The fish doesn't look fresh. My rolls come out after I awhile and they look ok, except for the Mexican roll which looks terrible. I ask for spicy mayo 2x. It never showed up. Avoid this place people! I have pretty much stopped eating sushi unless it's AYCE sushi - go big or go home, I say, or rather, wear your most forgiving pair of sweatpants and gorge yourself silly. As someone who's gulped down sushi in the dingiest buffets and lived to eat another day, I'm not the most discerning - all I really care about is that there's a lot on my plate. I'm probably the reason why chain stores like Chilis and Fridays actually make a profit. They bumped up their prices - AYCE is now $22.95, but it's still an awesome deal, because unlike some places, they don't try to foist garden-variety rolls, like regular salmon or salmon avocado or tuna avocado or, the worst offender, cucumber/asparagus (seriously? SERIOUSLY?! I challenge the one person in the world who likes that combo to a no-holds-barred arm-wrestle). You get to pig out on all their special rolls - my favorite of the night was the Fire Lobster Roll. Lobster tempura and avocado with spicy crab, God bless. I also tried the Double Spicy Roll, with spicy tuna and then spicy salmon/spicy crab on top. The non-sushi dishes aren't as extensive as I would have hoped (Sakura Sushi had terriyaki, katsu, udon, and salad - here, there's miso and edamame) but the crazy range of rolls you get more than makes up for it. If you still aren't completely stuffed by the time you waddle out of here, there's a Baskin Robbins a couple stores down for dessert. read more

They offer a wide selection of hand and special rolls, as well as sushi by the piece. Soup, salad, edamame, and spring rolls are offered as appetizers. The staff and chefs are friiendly and are willing to omit ingredients from the rolls. 5 stars for food, price, service, and overall feel. The dessert I got was lacking however. I got green tea and vanilla mochi, for 3.50 each! A little expensive for mochi, and the vanilla was completely frozen so I couldn't eAt it. But I don't really care, this place rules. read more

Yeah this is a new regular for me, for sure! I got the lunch special: 3 rolls for $11. I didn't realize at first, but it comes with soup and a salad as well. I got a California roll, tuna roll, and avocado roll. Everything was great! The salad was wonderful with the dressing and the rolls were all so good! I only ate about half since it was so filling! All of the sushi here is super fresh and it truly is the best! The people working are always friendly and happy to serve. This place is small but very cozy. I've been here at least half a dozen times and did AYCE every time. Their sushi and roll selection for the AYCE is pretty good for $20 -- their special rolls all sound fantastic and most of them were up to par with their descriptions. Wouldn't kill to have a bigger range of hot foods, but with the selection of fish available, I'm not complaining. I always order the Monkey Roll and the Godzilla Roll whenever I come here. Monkey Roll has shrimp tempura (my favorite) with fried banana and a tangy sauce on top of the roll -- it sounds gross (banana with shrimp?!) but it's honest to God one of their best rolls. The Godzilla roll is fried with spicy tuna, avocado and the tangy sauce -- another winner. My advice: go easy with AYCE, especially if you order the special rolls from this place, cause those are huge and two will fill you up easily. Order some soup, light salad, or edamame in between rounds of sushi; that way, you can avoid feeling like your stomach will explode as you're walking out of the restaurant. read more

Up until about 2 years ago, I cringed at the thought of even eating sushi. Raw fish? You must be out of your mind. A buddy of mine talked me into trying it one day and I have been hooked ever since (mind you, I still don't eat cooked fish - I know, super weird). Honestly when anyone asks me about a good sushi place, the first place that comes to mind is Hikaru. The staff is absolutely awesome. I've gotten to know them pretty well from my frequent visits. The sushi always seems to come out quickly even when the place is packed. There is also no beating their all-you-can eat special. I think it is $19.95. That is insane!! I think I made it to 7 rolls once. Needless to say, I was pretty full. They also have an awesome lunch special of 3 rolls for $10 dollars. The selection for the special is slim but you still get way more than your money's worth. My favorite roll is the fantasy roll. It is a must try if you like avacado. read more

The all you can eat special for $19.95 is an absolute steal. There are a wide variety of rolls to choose from and they are all excellent. Their specialty rolls are very creative and utilize the new fusion techniques, the monkey roll is the best since it is topped with fried banana, you wouldn't expect that to work with sushi but it does. I plan on visiting this place many times in the future definitely worth checking out even if you do not like sushi because they have something for everyone as well as the tools to turn people into sushi converts. A friend from high school introduced me to this place, and we've been back for lunch a total of 3 times. Every time I've been here, there have been maybe 2 or 3 other people in the restaurant. I guess it's never really busy during lunch time. We're always seated quickly, and the waitstaff treated us well every time. I've always sat at a table and not at the bar. I ordered some dumplings from the appetizer menu, which were eerily similar in taste and appearance to the frozen dumplings my mom would buy for me when I was a kid. I actually hope they are the same frozen dumplings, because if that is the quality of dumplings that were made by them in-house, I'd knock off another star from this review. The sushi is... decent. It's basically what you'd expect from a casual place like this, the regular sushi are pretty no frills, and the specialty rolls are hit or miss depending on your tastes. I tried the all you can eat once, and personally would not do it again. There is a decent variety of sushi, and it's not one of those places that you leave feeling cheated because the rice to fish ratio is too high, but there's nothing about this place that really sets it apart in my opinion. I go here because my friend says it's the best sushi he's ever had, but I think if he tried sushi places that weren't across the street from our old high school, he might change his mind. This our go to sushi when we visit my grandparents in rockland county. They do an awesome all you can eat sushi with many different types of rolls. Their special rolls, which are included in all you can eat, are unique and super good! The other meals, non sushi, are also great! My grandmother always gets something off the regular menu and enjoys it every time, as well as leaves with leftovers because the portions are a great size.
