Hospice East Bay cared for my adopted mother in the final years of her long life. She was 100 years old when she passed away. She wanted to live to see her 100th birthday. Every year she lived at this hospice they had a party for her birthday. Some celebrations were by her bedside. One big party was outside with all her friends gathered around. I admit I was present via photos, videos and for her 100th birthday zoom. Her son frequently emailed and sent me and my daughter some of her belongings during the years. She couldn't have her beautiful hankies and quilts with her since there was too many. My thoughts wander and I just wanted to stress that her son continuously stressed to us that she was getting the best of care from the staff at Hospice East Bay. I found this Hospice on Yelp and I wanted to share my experience. Her son requested that donations be made in her honor upon her death. My daughter and I were very happy to donate. Their sales person came to Tice Acute Care and provided a very business like sales presentation to the family and the patient! The presentation was devoid of any care, concern or compassion for the patient or family. About a week later she came back uninvited and interrupted the patient's physical therapy with another presentation to the patient on how hospice and end of life care would be better than his current comfort care program of rehabilitation. This has created a lot of problems for the patient and family. The patient is now unsure of his health status, whether he can trust the institutions or his family members. This conduct by East Bay Hospice is unprofessional and cruel. I would never recommend this organization. read more

My Mom was recently in hospice care at the Bruns House in Alamo run by Hospice East Bay. Although it was my Mom's last week of life, I couldn't have asked for better care. The facility is nice and quiet and well run. It's small so not overwhelming and lots of staff work there and always available for you or your loved on. My Mom was well loved and cared for her last week and so grateful that we found the Bruns House for her. I found that staff to be very compassionate and kind and very professional. I can't recommend them enough if you have someone you love that needs hospice care. read more

I have worked with Hospice of the East Bay for many years and this review is very long overdue. My experience with them has been in home settings, assisted living and in skilled nursing facilities. In all levels of care Hospice of the East Bay has always delivered care with compassion and professionalism. I have referred dozens of patients to them and my patients' families are always pleased with the services and support the receive. I can't thank Hospice East Bay enough for shepherding my father, my family and me over the last six months of his life. They enriched Dad's last days with music, a veteran's pinning ceremony and visits from compassionate caregivers and volunteers. Led by Coral, Dad's wonderful nurse and case manager, the team guided all of us. They saw his last days coming and were able to prepare us all, making it an experience as natural and even beautiful as death can be. I will always be grateful to them. read more

I moved in with my wife's dad for what turned out to be the last month of his life, and we chose Hospice East Bay to help out. Someone from Hospice in some capacity came out every day M-F, whether a nurse, an aide, or a social worker. And on a Sunday night when he had a slight fall, I called them and they sent a Kaiser nurse to check him over. They trained me how to bathe him (the aide did most of that twice a week), change sheets, give medication, and what to expect week to week as he neared the end. The music therapist came out several times and added such a wonderful touch to the medical care. I plan to use their grief counseling soon. read more

I called last week regarding a clean out in Concord for one of my clients. The lady named Nicole who called me back was very rude and disrespectful towards me during our conversation. Nicole even had the nerve to ask me what race I was as I sounded like I was black. Which I immediately questioned what does my race have to do with anything, then Nicole rudely replied back saying she and her company would not be able to assist with my clean out. I will be spreading the word to everyone I know on how I was spoken to and treated there by Nicole. read more

I wish that I could give Hospice of East Bay zero stars. Not only were the nurses not trained appropriately, but they were also apathetic towards my sick father and the rest of my family. I am a nurse, and I had to show the hospice nurses how to use the equipment and how to administer medications. One nurse was too afraid to access my dads port, and was told by her manager to "Just watch a video and do it". They showed no kindness or concern towards my dying dad and his worries. While he was dying, he was in incredible pain, we called numerous times to ask for more or better pain management and were told time and time again, we will get back to you. He was writhing in pain. It was unacceptable. When he passed, we called the nurse to come out and pronounce. She walked in and said yep he's gone. It was disturbing the lack of compassion. She didn't even walk over to him. Didn't offer condolences or speak with us. After his passing, hospice sent us a blank card, nothing written inside, with a typed piece of paper folded inside with a generic letter. The letter said nothing about my father and nothing specific. The same mass produced letter that it sent to everyone. Who sends a BLANK card?!? As a nurse, I am appalled by the lack of medical training and confidence of your staff. I am sickened by their lack of empathy and compassion. As a family member of a hospice patient, I am disgusted by the company's "letter" they sent expressing condolences. I emailed the main office and the response was basically as terrible as their service. I would never recommend this hospice to anyone. They made for a horrible experience for my father and our family, allowed him to be in pain, and offered no support after his passing. read more

First off they basically dropped everything to come out, see my mom, and place her in immediate hospice care. Then over the next 4 days they made sure she was okay and we were okay. I haven't experienced the grief team but at this point that's not important, what was important was that my mom was able to do what she needed to do and in the comfort of her own home. Each nurse that was there was exactly the right nurse for the scenario that day. They understood the challenges I had and took care of them or calmed us down appropriately. I'm not surprised that the only negative I have ever heard about hospice of the East Bay is that families wish they had brought them in sooner. My Hospice Team made my mother's death so comfortable tranquil and beautiful. Whenever things got difficult our team was there to discuss the situation with complete transparency. From my experience their nurses are great however, their therapy and support group is rather disappointing. I lost my fiancé to a car accident 9/20/21. I was informed I should seek some form of support or help so through 211 I found hospice zoom general grief support. Unfortunately I was informed I could not come back unless I found childcare as my 11 month old child is a distraction because she moves around. I do feel this issue could've been resolved by asking me turn off my camera I'm not sure. Regardless I think there should be a zoom support group for people in my situation who literally have nobody. So if you lose your spouse and have no sitter but need some help asap I recommend seeking out other sources. Facebook groups have been most supportive. read more

When my wife and I took my father in law home on hospice we were told how great hospice of the east bay was. When the admitting nurse came to our house she explained if we needed anything we could call and someone could be dispatched in just 30 minutes to help. They spoke about how they are there to help and we are not alone in doing this. Of course we found out later that all of that was just talk and they weren't really there to help. When we called because we were at a loss how to help my father in law we would be told someone would call us in thirty minutes. Four hours later we would still be waiting. When my wife called to check something her father told her about his meds she was told his meds list wasn't on the computer. It felt as though we were left to our own devices and had to make decisions about his care on the fly. This experience left a bad taste in our mouths for sure. read more

I've had many interactions with them over the years and every interaction has been warm, heartfelt and I believe they genuinely care about serving the residents of East Bay. Each year I attend the Tree of Lights ceremony in Lafayette to listen as a dear friend is memorialized. I also frequent their retail stores as I make both purchases and donations to the thrift shops. Hospice East Bay is truly a wonderful establishment offering heartfelt care and comfort in a family's most trying moments. I would highly recommend them. read more

If I could give a 10, 15, or 20 star review I would. Hospice East Bay cared for my mother. The care we got was incredible. A team of experienced nurses would visit her regularly to help with her medication. An y time there was a problem or a pain or a fall, a nurse would be right there. Their communication was excellent, giving us almost daily updates on my mother's care and modifying her prescriptions as needed. In addition to expertise, they also cared for her with great compassion and love. I didn't know that healthcare like this could exist in America. read more

Hospice of the East Bay cared for my husband in his last 10 days in the facility in which he lived. They sped up the enrollment process so that they could take over immediately. Every single person who came--at least one every day, and sometimes more than one--was capable and compassionate not only toward him but to me (his wife) and our two daughters. They were unstintingly generous in their time, and they coordinated well with the facility staff. We haven't used the grief service, I think because the hospice workers (especially the social worker) made it possible for us to experience something similar as he lay there awaiting the death that he had sought (he was 93). Absolutely the worst hospice, I am the owner of several facilities, their social worker is constantly looking to find negative in our care facility, there is no perfection, instead of focusing on the care of resident, their social worker want to know why we don't have people working 24 hours around the clock. I couldn't imagine a better place for my father-in-law's final days. It is located in a converted home that completely melds into the rest of a beautiful quiet neighborhood. My father-in-law had his own large room. Staff were attentive, caring, and respectful. Most of all the beautiful gardens in the back complete with memory stones is so tranquil and peaceful. It still brings me comfort two years later to remember our own memory stone my son and I left for grandpa in that beautiful place. read more

We experienced outstanding hospice care for our mother this past January. Each clinician who arrived offered compassionate care, and had the expertise we needed in each situation. This included visits from nurses, medical social worker, and chaplain. We utilized the after hours service several times and each time Hospice Easy Bay responded quickly and made sure our mom's needs were met and she was comfortable. Our family had questions for the hospice physician, and she too, responded quickly and spent much time discussing our mother's health issues and situation. The intake nurse was great, then the evil vampire social workers tried feasting on my mother in law. My in laws live at home with caregivers and wish to die there. They have both been of sound mind if not completely sound body. My mother in law had a heart attack and almost died but recovered with nothing more than oxygen, she has a DNR for anything above that. She needed time to recover without demands on what little energy she had left to her. The doctor put her on hospice so that she could recover. To help out my father in law in this stressful time, we called East Bay hospice. Before the social worker had even been to my in laws home, she reported my wife and brother in law to adult protective services because they had not instituted 24/7 care. My mother in law only needs 8 hours of care per day and rest. Also, my father in law is fully cognizant, is in charge of their life together, and can call anytime for any service or assistance he or my mother in law may need. The social worker, not a medical professional by the way, told my wife how sick and close to dying my mother in law is, 3 weeks after becoming medically stable within her DNR constraints. I will point out that my mother in law is back to her old self now, 4 weeks after we fired these horrible people. Do not hire these people, they will only tell you how bad of a job you are doing and demand that you do everything they say regardless of the doctors orders. read more

If you are going to lose a loved one and want them to be comfortable and tended to like they are family, Bruns House is the place. My mother passed here after four days. Those four days with her, even though she was not totally conscious were priceless to me and my family. The place is beautiful with a rose garden, fireplaces, comfortable furniture and room for family and friends. I just explained today to a friend that Bruns House is much better than bringing your loved one home. The patient and family will be much more secure in knowing there will be minimal to no suffering and their loved one is safe and sound. The people that work and volunteer there are earth angels and will be as helpful and involved as you'd like them to be. They offer different kinds of support but it is never pushy or thrust upon you. You don't have to even speak to anyone if you wish. I wish everyone could have the soft transition of passing like my mother did. For such a horrible loss to have been so peaceful, I am forever grateful. read more

Hospice of the East bay started out like any of the other non-profit organizations, okay. Then they change nurses due to the 13 week contracts for the patients they are assigned to and you back explaining everything again. It gets tiring to tell them the same health information over and over again. If you carry a dang laptop around it should contain the information about the patient you are visiting. My mom is only on Hospice of the East Bay, because of Kaiser. She was going back and forth to the ER at least once a month and it was getting to all of us. The case worker at Kaiser recommended this option to help keep her from having to be transported to the hospital and back. It's done that, but the really issue just started within the last couple week. The first nurse we had seemed very tired, she was very caring and understanding. The next nurse that took over took a bit to adjust too, but she soon became just as good as the first Nurse. Now the next Nurse, she trying to do a lot and it come off as intimidating. What I mean by this is that she complaining about sores that the other nurses have always said, "Look good and I'm doing a good job with them", but she seems to think another wise. She's complaining about yeast and pads that I use for bed sores for my mom. She wants me to change them daily, but that would be ungodly costly. These pads are meant to trap moisture away from the skin and help keep the area dry. Also without them my mom would be in so much pain, they add the extra comfort she need being stuck in bed 24/7. She is unable to stand or walk and I'm the only one doing care for her. If I had to change these pads daily it would cost us out-of-pocket $560. Does Hospice of the East Bay cover for any of these pads, No. Hospice of the East Bay need to understand one thing, You're are only here in our home for only about 1 hour a week. You don't have to move my mom, you don't have to care for her through out the day and regardless of how bad the think their PTO is, I have it worse. I haven't had since taking over care for my mom 24/7 any time off from it for nearly 5 years. Listen to what I'm telling you and don't overstep you bounds. If you can't respect us withing our home and do what we need you to do I will call who every is currently my Mom caseworker with Kaiser in and tell them I want a different Hospice Organization. Hospice of the East Bay can't be my only option. Also the 13 week contract is annoying, by time we find a nurse we like we're saying, "Bye" to them. I think they should give the patient a option if we want them to continue to be our nurse or not. Unless they leaving the company completely and from what I read on yelp seem like that is probably what is happening. I never understood these organization taking on more patient then possible. There should be a set limit of how many patient you feel like you can handle and not overwork your staff. We also have an aid who comes once a week and the first one was great. After I told her what I needed her to do on day one, every week then after she came in and got everything without me having to tell her where things are or needed to go. The current aid just doesn't seem like she's very confident and I'm constantly getting frustrated with having to tell her what to do each and every week. I just ready to tell the Social Working this Monday(9/9/19) , "If the Aid and Nurse can not perform they services professionally then I want someone else. I do not care if it's random people each week if that mean having less of a chance being stuck for 13 week with Nurses and Aids who seem uncaring or incompetent. If I like a person then I might request(if possibly) then that person for the next 13 weeks be our current nurse or aid." Hospice of the East Bay, whoever is in charge of your facility I like you to pass them a message. "You want the money you are collect off my mom through my parents insurance then you need to prove you care first. If I need supplies I should be able to get about 50% of what I need without question. I was told, "We can't order no rinse soap." I don't know what you're problem is, but some patients like my mom are stuck in bed and rinsing soap off is much harder then having a product that doesn't need to be. "Furthermore my current nurse and aid have order supplies I don't even need. If your concern is money then maybe they shouldn't waste the money on supplies that will just go to waste. I can't even return the supplies and they're taking up room in our house. If they need to order a minimum of $20 of supplies to be able to ship them, order me $20 of supplies I can use, instead of supplies I will never use." "My parents need to spend nearly $800 of medical supplies out-of-pocket because the insurance we have doesn't cover them." I'd write more, but hit my limit. We recently needed hospice care for our father and because Kaiser hospice was unavailable in our short time frame, we were given the option to use Hospice East Bay without any prior knowledge of their services. I cannot say enough good things about the nurses that supported us through the toughest 3+ days my sister and I have ever gone through. They held our hands (figuratively) through the hospice experience, and helped us make our father comfortable in his final days of life. The nurses were empathetic, knowledgeable, patient, and kind. They were available to support us at odd hours of the day/night. We are so grateful for their help and support through such a tough time. I highly recommend them. read more

SERIOUSLY? I'm amazed they even have 3 stars. I have been donating to their tree of lights program for many years. The past three years have been a nightmare. They do not get the light on the correct tree; they do not send out their soliciting pamphlets; they mispronunce names, even though they are given phonetically spelled pronunciations. The list goes on. I have gotten tired of literally BEGGING them to send out the information so I can donate. This year was the worst. I did not (again) receive the pamphlet with the little postcards to let families know that they have a light on a certain tree. I emailed them and asked for a pamphlet complete with the little postcards. I told them that this is the third year I haven't gotten my pamphlet. It was very apparent that someone took a USED pamphlet out of a garbage can and sent it to me. No postcards, missing two pages ripped, dirty and taped together. They claim that the Post Office must have done it. SERIOUSLY? My mailman must have torn it off at the perforation, removed the postcards and 2 pages and taped it back together and delivered it to me? I wrote again and asked that they overnight me a fresh pamphlet. I spoke with David C. and was telling him the many problems they had and he kept talking over the top of me and saying "we're doing our best." He said and, I quote, "You have to understand. We get hundreds and hundreds of donations and I, myself, have announced the names. There are hundreds and hundreds of names." I replied, "Well, if people stop donating, perhaps you wouldn't make the same egregious mistakes over and over and over again." After having recent surgery, I decided to go to Hospice to get a fresh pamphlet. Keep in mind that I only wanted to make a donation. First of all, their door is locked! Why?? I was "buzzed in" and saw a whole stack of fresh pamphlets lying on a counter where no one can get at them because they are locked up like Fort Knox. The lady at the front desk was very warm and I was relaying to her the trouble I've been having with them. Out comes some guy from behind yet another set of LOCKED doors and he sends out David C, who comes out to harass me. Bear in mind that I only wanted to make a donation and get it in in time to go on the trees. I repeat EXACTLY what I said in my emails..."Perhaps, if you don't get any donations, your problem would be solved and, if you can't pronounce names which are phonetically spelled out for you, maybe you should not be announcing names." There was NO "to do", no yelling and screaming but just repeating what my experiences had been with them, although I am sure he manufactured some sort of maniacal nonsense-they always do when they get called out. I sat down to write my check for my donation. That's all I came there for. I'm sitting in a chair, writing a check and this incompetent tells me to leave! SERIOUSLY??? I said I came to write my check, give my donation and that's what I am doing. He starts getting arrogantly rude and says he WON'T ACCEPT MY DONATION! I politely said, "Wait. You have screwed this up for three years in a row and I have to leave?" He repeats himself and I say calmly, cooly, collectedly, " I want to get this on video that you are refusing to accept a donation from a long time donor." I pulled out my phone and started filming. Both of these guys abruptly turned and RAN back behind the closed, locked doors. I finished my check, gave it to the nice lady at the front desk and thanked her. I asked that the CEO contact me. I get home and receive a phone call from Barney at the Pleasant Hill Police Department! SERIOUSLY? What is he going to do? Arrest me for donating? He said that David "felt unsafe".....the only safety issue David would have would be to get a paper cut from the check I was writing!!! Perhaps he's afraid of telephones? Barney said they didn't want me to contact them. SERIOUSLY? This incompetent staff cannot be known to the CEO? I shouldn't contact them to let them know the horrible service they give. Maybe David is afraid of telephones. I now know why they keep the doors locked; someone may want to come in and donate! How awful! How "unsafe." I urge anyone to never donate to this business. The American Cancer society thanks you profusely for donating, are kind, gentle, competent, mention how wonderful it is that you are donating AND acknowledge to the family that you have donated. Not ONE person there feels "unsafe" over someone (70+ years of age, limping) sitting and writing a check to them or holding a telephone. I have NO intention of ever donating to this schlock business and I will certainly spread my experiences far and wide so that they don't have to be bothered to do the right thing. My heart goes out to the families they "service." The negative comments here on Yelp are well deserved. Again, I shudder to think that these folks have anything to do with cancer patients or their families. How very cold and pathetic they are. read more

I am so eternally grateful my family and I were able to let my dad rest peacefully while at Brun's House. My dad's passing was extremely unexpected and traumatic. Weeks after his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis, my dad contracted sepsis and only had days to live. We were fortunate enough to learn about Brun's House through a palliative care nurse at the hospital my dad was at. Brun's House only has 6 beds and it is so serene in the house. The garden is beautiful and I truly felt like this was the best place for my dad to have his final hours. The staff is extraordinary and exhibited the most compassion I have ever seen from medical professionals. Truly, my dad deserved the upmost dignity and care and I'm so lucky Brun's House was able to accommodate us. I believe every person is entitled to having this sort of amazing experience when going through such a hard transition in your life. read more

I have the highest gratitude to the entire staff that helped me and my family for the 8 weeks we were in hospice (August 2017 - October 2017). Everyone was compassionate, patient, helpful and friendly. Even the Solano Pharmacy service that they partner with was friendly and prompt. I could not have asked for better support and care for both myself and my husband. And my experience at The Bruns House was also wonderful. Even my family and friends that hung out with me the day my husband passed mentioned to me how wonderful the staff and the 'house' was. It truly made the last day easier for me and more pleasant. Hard to explain why, but it did for me. And they have a bereavement team for support afterwards. I have received their packet of info and was touched by the services offered. I highly recommend their care and just wished I had found them first and not have had to go thru 2 other 'sub par' hospice companies. read more

I scheduled a pickup of some items that I thought I'd graciously donate. I figured I'd go with the hospice as a good deed and hopefully my items would go to a good cause. I had a nice Ashley brand sofa, arm chair, and matching ottoman which were meticulously cared for and very clean. No rips, tears, scuffs, or pet hair. They told me over the phone that it was driver discretion to pick up the items or not..."no problem" I thought. I'm thinking my loss would be someone's gain and they were lucky to get a donation of this caliber. The truck pulled up and I let the drivers in. They looked at the items and said that they wouldn't take them as they didn't think they could resell them. I was literally appalled and asked why. He said there were signs of use, and some areas of wear. IT'S A DAMN DONATION! If it were brand new, I wouldn't be donating it. I promptly showed them the door, but as the driver left he told me I had attitude, and that it wasn't his fault. Well, I'm sorry if this would have just been too much work for you to get in the back of your truck...know what I sayin' Hospice of the east bay sucks. I will not call them, nor will I ever promote their store or visit. Get some professional people who know what a valuable donation is, or don't mind doing a little work...aka THEIR JOB!!! read more

Beth, Ben, Jelveh and Diane -just to name a few who were involved on a daily basis to ensure our aunt was well taken care of and had the best options while seeing her through to an in home hospice care in another area where she could afford to be. Don't be fooled by this organization which is supposed to be non profit. This is a for profit business whose purpose is to get maximum profit out of the dying taking advantage of the Medicare which covers hospice care almost indefinitly. Most hopitals and doctors and carehome recommend hospice care whether it is needed or not because" Medicare covers the cost". In my mother's case Hospice of the East Bay started charging the day they are contacted even though the actual service did not start right away. It also continued charging the daily charge of $210-$260 for a long time after we requested the termination of the services. Our mother was not under Medicare so we noticed their business proctice of billing after their service stoppage. This is an old people rip off practice most Medicare patients do not notice (because it is not their money). read more
