A fantastic place to donate items - free residential pickup! My mother is moving back east so I needed to help her get rid of almost all of her furniture so I called Hospice Thrift Shoppes. The person on the phone was very friendly and explained what items they would look for and the movers themselves would make the final decision on certain items. It was easy to arrange a date and the movers themselves will call you about a half hour before they arrive. While they mainly focus on furniture, they will take up to 3 boxes of smaller items like clothing, cutlery, dishes, etc but furniture is the priority and they might not have enough space for something in a box (which could be dropped off at the store more easily). They are prompt and professional, but can be super affable if you are nice as well. I would suggest letting them play their own music or whatever, it's good to have some cold bottled water to give them if you can. We had two movers come today and they were LOVELY! We joked around and helped out where we could, we provided ziploc bags for the various nuts and bolts that came with certain furnishings. Small things like this can make a huge difference in their day and all interactions. They helped me take down a wall mounted flatscreen tv, so make sure to have some tools on hand they can use if you need to take anything apart! I absolutely recommend this as a way to inexpensively get rid of furniture if you have nowhere else to donate. This should be your FIRST CALL before all others! *Note* They do not take beds/mattresses, really big/giant items, couches with patterns (they prefer solid color) and try to avoid too much glass. Again it'll be up to the movers to decide what works for the stores. They pick up and pretty much immediately drive it to the store so there is no time to fix anything or whatever. I am going to check out one of their stores later to actually see the selection, it seems they have a good eye for things so I wouldn't be surprised that you could find some great items (especially clothing!). read more

We were next door and decided to stop by. It's a small thrift store but you can find some stuff here. They had a little kid section. There are some big toys that were well priced. They also had woman's clothes that's a hit or miss. They have very nice furniture that looked almost new. Definitely check it out. read more

The lady looked at my box and said oh just clothes, rummaged around and saw more than that and said thank you but without a smile. Odd. Went to the front to take a look. Could use a bit cleaning up. I greatly appreciate the purpose of this store. My experience with donating attempts over several years has been completely unsatisfactory. As a wholesale sales rep, I have brand new samples twice a year to donate. I have taken these to them and been sent away (without the grumpy staff members in the back, even deigning stand up and walk to the door or to look at what i am bringing. I take my goods elsewhere, but try again every once in a while at Hospice Store, and am rudely sent away again. I understand that the quality of donated items is important for the smooth functioning of their business and have only ever brought in brand new items and high end gently used (clean and scrubbed where needed). I found a welcoming thrift store, also in Concord, off Clayton Road, on Chestnut Street, behind Goodwill, that I am delighted to now support. Teen Challenge's group of stores focus on young people needing support for life issues. Try them out and feel good the rest of the day! read more

I wanted to donate some of my better items to a Hospice Thrift Shoppe as I feel it is a great cause. (I volunteered for Hospice many years ago and the hospice "movement" has helped many family members.) I had several good quality jackets, slacks, skirts, and a cashmere sweater, plus a couple of purses (Coach and Baggallini), and some miscellaneous glassware. I had driven by the Hospice Thrift Shoppe on Clayton Road many times but had never stopped until recently. Impressed by the size, but did not take time to browse. It took a few minutes before I was waited on and then was redirected to the donation station at the back of the building. I have volunteered in a thrift shop so understand the atmosphere of the intake area and the need for clean, quality donations. But I got a rather brusque, cold welcome. First I was chastised for having my items on hangers and then I was questioned if they were leftovers from a garage sale. The attendant reluctantly said she would take the items on hangars. (I was willing to remove them.) She also said she would need to look at the clothing and the items in the box. Yes, I understand they must have standards. I told her I had set aside my better items for hospice and lesser items for a different thrift shop. But it was not what she said to me, but how she said it. When she saw my clothes, she became a bit more friendly. Once she saw the Coach bag on top of the boxed items, she decided she did not need to go through the box. Not sure if I will make future donations to this shop, although it is very convenient. read more

I was in the market for a good used desk. I scoured all the local thrift stores for one and sadly came up empty handed. This store was also lacking in the functional furniture department. However, I was impressed by the cleanliness of the store. Its very clean in here. You know how some of these types of store are a little gritty around the edges. Not this store. Its very nice. I found a very clean sturdy new metal cheese grater. The kids selection is awesome. I bought some kids books and a some super cute little sandals for my daughter. They had some nice holiday stuff too. A good mix of all the holidays, not just Christmas stuff. My haul in total was only $7. You cant beat that. Ill make this a frequent thrift stop for kids stuff in the future. read more

They told me on the phone that they accept good quality furniture donations, but when the truck came he refused everything! All my donations were almost unused quality, clean, but somewhat dated. They refuse to accept floral upholstery prints, in spite of the fact that an inexpensive slipcover would change it to a solid! We were very disappointed and the drier was somewhat rude! read more

I love this shop and drive from Napa on occasion to visit it.....The ladies are always upbeat, helpful, and genuine......but today was a complete disappointment, a woman with an English accent was working and was VERY short and rude. The store had a sale going on " 50% off Furniture, Lamps, and Knick - Knacks".....I approached her and asked what were Knick - Knacks....she looked at me REALLY bothered by my question and said all the small items on the back shelves....I said thank you and went shopping....I collected a few items and took them back to her and asked if she could hold them while I continued to shop.....again bothered said u need to put them in a basket otherwise i cant.....i asked where the baskets were and she huffed and responded at the door entrance. I let it go, and did as she asked and continued shopping. I had collected about 7 items and when i went to pay, she informed me a teapot was "kitchenware".....a cup was "drinkware".....so again i asked what are knick - knacks as all these items were on the shelves.....her response was.......Knick - Knacks are WHAT I SAY are Knick - Knacks......i was done at this point.......I left her with her "drinkware" and "kitchenware"....and left. Management needs to explain what customer service is to this individual and what proper English is.....Knick - Knacks is not a proper descriptor.....can u imagine if Walmart or Target was doing a 50% off Knick - Knacks sale.......LOL....I looked on AMAZON and there are LOTS of Teapots and Cups that come up if u ask for Knick-Knacks.....go figure. I moved to Clayton in 2006. I started trying to donate good quality items to Hospice Thrift Store soon after I moved to the area. I can honestly say that I have never felt good after any interaction there. Hospice supported my mom and our family l feel great about the organization. But the Thrift Store is a terrible representative for the organization. Awful attitudes, demeaning behavior. Might be time for some secret shoppers and donators to show up. I am done with them. There are much higher rateed thrift stores around the area who will appreciate our donations! read more

I participated in the Hospice Thrift Shoppe Hop that took place over the summer. It was put on to bring awareness to the network of Hospice Thrift Shoppes in the East Bay. If it hadn't been for this event, I would never have known this store was located on Clayton. I had NO IDEA where this was even located! If you're driving down Clayton toward Ygnacio Valley Road, the store is located on your right side in the shopping center with A Touch of Class Hair and Nails, Clayton Sonset Flowers, and Farmers Insurance. It's a large storefront! I walked in and immediately liked the groovy music that they were playing and how friendly the cashier was with the customers. Everything was well organized and I liked the fact that the women's section was right up front. I purchased a couple of items that ended up being "on sale" so the price was less than I had expected! The cashier up front was chatty, friendly, and nice and was surprised that I had never been there before and happy that I had come in. I'm sure the process of donating goods is a much different experience than one of purchasing goods, as is the case at most consignment and hospice stores. You do need to expect that this is a step above Goodwill and Salvation Army, so if you have that expectation, then you can be prepared for only items in EUC (excellent used condition) being accepted. read more

We just moved to the area and decided to make a donation to a local thrift shop. When we were dropping off the donations, another woman walked up with a beautiful item to donate, but was rudely sent away by the volunteer staff. Even when we handed the bag to the volunteer they told us that next time we had to bring in smaller bags. We perused the store and didn't find much of anything worth buying. They did have a lot of furniture, which is a positive, however all of the items were already marked sold. There won't be a 'next time' at this thrift shop and we will be working with a more friendly environment next time. read more

I don't know if it was a name change or new ownership, but it used to have better stuff when it was called Anna's Attic. I feel like inventory is not like it used to be. It is a hit or miss going there. Not worth going out of your way to go visit. Before they used to have vintage sales annually, and other themed annual sales, where they save and put out all their vintage fashion/finds. They decided they weren't going to do that anymore. A bummer, since I looked forward to those, and I would find amazing vintage leather croc handbags and vintage furs etc. for great prices, that consignments would charge an arm and a leg. I used to also find amazing fine bone china here, I don't see much of that either anymore. But again, it could be a hit or miss with this spot (or change in ownership/name). Let's just say it's not like it used to be a year ago, and I don't frequent this place often anymore. Just not enough variety. read more

Wow. I called them to see if they wanted my couch. It's 2 years old but a very large sectional in GREAT condition. We had it professionally cleaned and there were no rips or stains at all. I thought donating it would be better than dealing with people off Craigslist. Clearly, I was wrong. I told them all about the couch on the phone and when they came they said "Well it's 2 years old and a sectional and these are hard to sell". Then why did you agree to come!?!?? Useless. Not to mention that they came earlier than they said they would so what if I wasn't home? They were total dicks about it. So, am i supposed to donate a brand new couch? Fine. Your loss. read more

Hospice was there to comfort both my parents and our families during their last days of cancer. It is a wonderful organization that has received both cash and several thousands of dollars worth of donated items including full rooms of furniture. We have been giving to this local thrift shop for 5 years without any problems. Today I encounter back room Betty with an attitude. Donation is being processed and BRB goes street on me. Let me check that box. She goes TSA on me shuffling through items and pulls out a set of plates that must have had a scratch and said. "You take this back with you". I asked if we can just toss them in the trash and she says no, our trash bill is too high. I grab my 8 plates and head out to the car feeling beat up and dejected. Not a way to treat donors. If all my stuff was bad, get rid of me for giving junk. But no, the box was great and the plates would have been easy enough to put in the trash next to us. I would have understood, felt appreciated and would return again some day to donate. Not now, Ms BRB lost a donor. From now on the doggies get my stuff. read more

I love to stop in here at least once a week to find a new treasure for my home. This is where I got my pasta machine at a steal! Their quilt sale is also a great event to attend. My bed is now covered with a super cute white and pink scalloped floral quilt. Its a nice vintage but modern touch for me room that I would never have been able to male myself. I've written reviews of a number of these Hospice Thrift Shoppes/Stores in the bay area, and I think they are all wonderful! Each one has different sales on different days, and of course, you never know what you are going to find until you get there. I frequent this particular HTS often because it is the closest to me, and I've found a number of very nice, good quality items. I mostly buy clothing because I don't need any housewares, furniture, or knick-knacks, but if that is what you are looking for, chances are you will find them here. (Of course, it depends upon what has been donated most recently!) Their women's shoe, handbag, and scarf/belt section is on the small side, and although I personally never buy used undergarments, hats, or swimsuits, that is a small selection too. They do have a small vintage corner where you can find clothes and miscellaneous antiques. Great store! read more

First I have to commend all but ONE of the employees here. They are so kind, helpful and the store is clean. Lately the prices seem to have gone up but I think it depends on who is pricing. However-the lady with the short hair and glasses who accepts donations is extremely difficult to deal with. She always nit picks through the donations and half of the items she says she can't take. I once brought 2 Pottery Barn throw rugs and she said she couldn't take them. Never have a brought something ratty or broken. I frequent the store as a customer for frivolous holiday items and I know for a fact there is a lot of merchandise for sale that is pretty crummy. I have purposely avoided donating because she puts me in a bad mood but I went there today and SOS...perhaps they should consider a different, more personable employee to accept donations. It's just a bummer, but you can count on her pissy attitude. read more

STRONG HINT OF DISCRIMINATION!Went here with my sister on New year's Eve. Granted we got there right before closing. We were going to leave but then we noticed 3 to 4 people walked in and started shopping. Excited we thought maybe they were going to stay open a little bit longer we walked inside. We were greeted by a not so nice woman with and Australia accent and told, they were closed. Confused I asked "why are the other people allowed to shop"? She had no excuse but my only thought is that me and my sister are from Central American decent aka brown. It was really uncomfortable and disappointing. Never experienced anything like that. If you were closed and you were not accepting of new customers, then it should go for everyone not a select few. Do better... read more

These people switch the prices on you. One person will give you the sale price while another will over charge you. The middle-aged Latinx lady who has an accent was extremely rude when I asked her a simple question and then she doubled the price of one of my items because I questioned it. Hi folks, I haven't donated anything to this thrift/antique store, so I haven't experienced any alleged rudeness. I would understand them being picky because unfortunately many people use thrift shops for dumping sites for their junk. I have scored a few pretty nice things at very reasonable prices but That's because I happened by after one of their sales and they were getting rid of stuff that didn't sell. The last two or three times I paid them a visit they had about a third of the shop blocked off for their "Vintage Sale". They also do it for a "Quilt Sale. This is always disappointing. The lady's at the counter have always been very pleasant. I know they are a non profit and the proceeds go to a good cause but I have to agree that their prices are way too high for a thrift shop and it seems most of the really good stuff never comes out until they have their sales and then they price things as an antique shop would, which isn't quite right because they are a non profit thrift shop. Sometimes I think thrift shops forget they get there stuff free so it's almost 100% profit with the exception of operating costs. I'll continue to try my luck and check it out from time to time. But it isn't that often due to the high prices and the inability to purchase things I'm interested in because they have them tucked away until the next sale. They would sell a lot more and move things faster if the prices were more reasonable. But as long as people are willing to ignore that and shop there in which the proprietors know people will, any suggestions or negative views will probably go ignored. read more

I tried to donate several boxes of matched dinnerware after calling ahead to tell them that they needed to be kept together and I was assured that they would be. This was ironstone and quite heavy because there were 12 place settings plus serving pieces. Consequently I had to pack them in several boxes. Each box was sealed and labeled. When I arrived there were several people ahead of me in line and I had to park at some distance from the table where people were being asked about their donations prior to those donations being accepted. On that particular day they were rejecting picture frames and toys. Since it was about 95° out standing outside for ten minutes was very uncomfortable and I had to hold a heavy box, stand in line, then return to my car, and return to the line, which, grew during the time I walked all the way to my car, opened it, removed a box, set the box on the ground to close and lock the car, a process I repeated for every one of the 12 boxes, until finally a woman who seemed frustrated by my efforts came to my aid. Very begrudgingly I might add. The attitude in general was off putting and offensive. It was almost like they were doing me a favor. From now on, I will be taking my household donations, mostly china, silver and knickknacks from my late mother's home to another donation center. Mom was a big believer in hospice thrift stores as a way to support hospice but this one experience soured me in donating in this manner. I'll never go back again. This is an ok little thrift shop. Not a great selection of anything but it is well organized and clean. My one pet peeve is the worker/manager who has been there the two or three times that I have been there near closing time. When the post their hours as 10-5, she does not consider that to mean they are open until 5pm, she thinks that means they all go home at 5pm. About 20 minutes prior to closing she starts yelling, "We close in 20 minutes.....We close in 15 minutes.....We close in 10 ...We are closing... We are closing". Totally obnoxious. read more

I visit this store fairly frequently and am always struck by how many cars are in the parking lot. The lot is usually pretty full, and the shop isn't that big. With that being said, it is hit or miss. When I do find things, they are a great deal! I have found a few things lately: a new CAbi jacket for $4, china dishes, candle sticks, and a dresser. I think the prices are reasonable. The store is well organized and clean. The cashier who I see all of the time is nice, sharp. I have never encountered poor customer service. They get some awesome furniture pieces in, but you need to be there at 10:00 am right when they open to snag the good stuff. I have been there several times at around 10:20 and they are going around putting sold signs on the furniture. They have frequent sales and special events. I went one time during their quilt sale and they had a live band! They do not charge sales tax. All in all, a great shop for a very deserving cause. read more

I will find another place to donate my stuff. I took in about 20 men's shirts that were freshly dry cleaned on the hangers with the dry cleaning tags still on, the lady around back said they would not take them unless they were in a bag less than 20 lbs and no hangers, she was extremely rude. I do not know who she thinks she is, maybe the Queen of Clayton, but she needs to get over herself. I am trying to do a good thing and give them great quality items and cleaned even, and that woman talked to me like that? That is the problem with lots of these charities, they forget what they are there for. read more

Hospice of the East Bay took wonderful care of my Mom during the last 6 months of her life so after she passed away in May, I decided to donate the majority of the contents of her home to the hospice thrift shoppe. I really wish I could give the Hospice Thrift Shoppe 5 stars but unfortunately I just can't. My dealing with their pickup scheduler was great, she was very nice. She explained what they would take and what they wouldn't so I planned accordingly. Everything was packed up in boxes, the clothes bagged as instructed & furniture organized and in the garage. She also explained that it was up to the drivers as to what they would take and what they wouldn't and therein lies the problem. The driver and his helper were abrupt and rude. Although they begrudgingly agreed to take most of her things, some of the furniture they wouldn't take because they were too heavy. Yes, they were heavy because they were solid wood! We're talking Thomasville furniture that was in perfect condition, not the beat up furniture I've seen in their store. It was extremely disappointing. I put the items they didn't take on the "Nextdoor" website for free and the response I received was overwhelming. Every single person was so appreciative of each item they took. Hospice Thrift store could learn a thing or two about that. My suggestion to Hospice, hire people who are willing to move items that people so generously donate to you. Oh and perhaps teach them to show a little appreciation. read more
