The food is genuinely good and they're open late. Live music is always a plus. I am obsessed with the veggie sandwich (no avocado, add bacon... because I'm from the South and hago lo que yo quiero). I've heard the herbed fries are amazing. I also really like the lemon and berry bars (they're from some local bakery, I think). AND this is one of the few places that I've found that has Virgil's Black Cherry Cream Soda (delicious). The bad: They are soooo slow. Don't go to Hostel Cafe if you're trying to get a quick bite. It's obvious they're making things fresh, but damn... Come on Christmas and order a blt ($17) and it comes with no tomatoes and the lady looks at me like im crazy fir asking for them. And my plate stunk of garlic horribly it literally took away my appetite yet alone there was one piece of bacon on my BLT actually two one per side. The beet salad was inedible due to 1. The wilted and slimey and brown leaves of arugula and 2. The amount of dressing poured over the leaves. I was starving so I ate about half of it in a minute and then noticed how bad it tasted. One of the BEST hazelnut almond milk lattes and an amazing breakfast sandwich with a fluffy GF bun if you ask for it. Their pastry selection always has a bunch of options and smells too tempting. What a wonderful stumble upon for my Friday morning! I needed to kill some time with my vehicle being at Green Drop Garage. This was just the spot, you could even change up the vibe and go out back to the courtyard ~ lovely large space! Indeed everything is made from scratch! I ordered the Veggie Hash. They let me taste the vegan mushrooms gravy- AMAZING, even added it for the high cost of $6, totally worth it in my own opinion. I also switched the protein for chicken sausage and wanted to add an egg but they musta forgot that, fine by me it became an expensive plate. I will also say there were only carrots (under cooked), kale and green beans as the grilled veggies. I found one lone brussel sprout that if there were more I'd be more satisfied. Considering the price and that it's their vegetable dish on the am menu, it was a bit lack. The picture had cauliflower so maybe I was on an off day for the kitchen but still for the price... I was staying at this hostel and found the cafe extremely convenient. If you're staying here you will receive vouchers each day for coffee and a bagel or you can use them for discounts on other things. The bagels are very good and the selections for making them your own is very complete. I ordered a grilled cheese and a salad as well which were very good. Great little neighborhood joint! I know the cafe is primarily for hostel guests, but it is very opening and welcoming to everyone. It is open until midnight, which is a God-send in Portland where everything seems to close before 10. The service is prompt, and the menu is simple but consistent. This place has it going on, for being brand new, I am glad I tried them out. I honestly had low expectations because it's a hostel but I was wrong. I tried to ask why and explain I have a very bad dairy intolerance, and that removing it is not a "substitution, but she refused. I loved this cafe! It was actually one of my favorite spots I ate at when I was in Portland. Our first day we got the chicken sandwich and the special which was a mushroom chicken pasta dish that came with a yummy, refreshing salad. The food is good quality and fresh. I had the fresh bagels here every morning and also tried the veggie sandwich during my stay. The staff was friendly and the food comes out quick. It is a cute, quiet place to hangout at.
