Really enjoy this place! We don't live in the area, so we come every now and then, as it's close to the downtown area. The French toast bagel is one of the better ones I've had. It has good flavor and texture (not just cinnamon sugar on a bagel). One downfall is there is no place to sit - but we recently discovered a cute park 2 minutes away that is really nice to sit at. There are a lot of places to get bagels in this area but when it comes to a little bit more than just that bagel and coffee you may want to try here. The selection is pretty good here - all the bagel types you want and various spreads of cream cheese and more. They they're pretty well stocked too so there's no running out of your favorite bagel like I've had happen at Sonny's a nearby. My favorite thing to get here are the breakfast bagel sanwiches. They have everything you want, pack it on and serve it hot. I've never been too disappointed with it except for a time or two my bagel seemed stale. The selection of drinks here is also pretty sizable. Beyond coffee you have various juices, Snapple and more.. Which I like. The problem I would say does lie with the service here, it could be faster and certainly a little more friendlier, I can't recall anyone of the workers here cracking even a tiny smile which is always nice. I've never seen any rudness, but I'm always prepared with how a lot of these workers facial expressions look. With that said you come back for the large layout of not just options food and drink-wise but there is a fair amount of seating here too but it's the little things that that keep this place from being more than it could. read more

We were lining up for a car parade in our classic cars when pangs of hunger struck. Since we were in the store-crowded down town area, I struck out on roof, looking for a coffee shop or bakery. Yelp helped (natch) by directing me to this busy bagel place. I'm not an adventurous bagel buyer so I ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese. I bought one for my friend and hoofed it back to the cars. We dug in and found them well cooked, chewy and flavorful. Nice "tooth" was the description from my friend. Basically, a very good bagel at a fair price. Hard to give 5 stars with only one visit, but this is a very good bagel bakery that's popular with the locals. With more visits, 5 stars is probable. Totally agree about the wait at this place. The first I came it wasn't so bad but on my second visit I just said eff it and walked out. Ain't no way I'm waiting 15-20 minutes just to order some eggs on a bagel. So on my second visit I got nothing. On my first visit I got 2 eggs and bacon on a toasted bagel. I forgot to tell them to toast it but they made sure to ask. Thank you! It was a solid sandwich and the bacon was actually pretty good and not that gross I've been sitting here for a while and reheated a million times crap. So I am a fan of their sandwich and I am also a fan of their coffee. For the coffee, they add the cream and sugar for you! How retro. The service though...not rude but they moved with zero urgency. I don't do too much travel abroad to New Jersey, especially the Oranges, so I did a Yelp search to find the best bagels for the area. The first thing that came up was Sonny's Bagels but they lacked many things such as hot foods (eggs, bacon etc), seating, cream cheese variety, and bathrooms. There are certain qualifications that make a good bagel place. Thankfully, Hot Bagels Abroad was nearby and had all those necessities plus more. The bagels here are hot, fresh, and baked on the premises every day. They even had a wide variety of different kinds of bagels that you don't really see at too many places such as, jalapeño bagels and "super" egg bagels. Sounds like a heart attack in bagel form. The service here could have been a lot quicker. It was only 7am and it seemed to take longer than normal. But if you have the patience, you will be rewarded because these are some real tasty bagels. The place is located not too far from the Seton Hall campus. I'm sure Sonny's has the reputation in these parts, but Hot Bagel's Abroad just beats it out based sheerly on more bells and whistles. read more

When it comes to bagel options in south orange you don't have a lot of options, but hot bagels abroad is the best in the area by far. I always get the sausage, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. They make a nice hearty breakfast sandwich that is worth the money IMO. They also have a lot of different cream cheeses which are great but they tend to over do it on the spreading. Try the hash browns if you get a chance, they come in a styrofoam cup and have a delicious mix of different spices. It's very busy on weekends which I avoid, however even when I arrive at 6 am on a Thursday there is still a line. Definitely call ahead if you don't have time to wait -- they may quote an exceptionally long wait time but just ignore it and show up about 10-15 mins later. Only complaint is the service is sometimes slow but it seems to be improving. They usually have a few workers but they move slow when cooking as others have mentioned. Some service issues have been fixed from what I saw, one person now mans the cash register while another cooks. I would recommend going early if you can, although they do make more bagels throughout the day. read more

In South Orange, picking your bagel spot is like choosing the lesser of two evils. On one hand, you've got Sonny's. It's a dump and feels like a relic from the days of yore. They haven't had an upgrade since bell bottoms were cool. There are generally only two people working there, and "fast" isn't part of their modus operandi. The bagels, however, are top notch. On the other hand, you've got HBA, or Hot Bagels Abroad if you're not into the whole brevity thing. It's a franchise, so they are clearly running a bigger operation, and it shows. The store is bigger, more modern and they offer a lot more. It's really like a full service bagel deli and grill. The bagels are solid; not the best you're going to get, but far from the worst. They have a nice varied selection, always seem to have inventory available, offer a plethora of different cream cheese, and crank out mean looking breakfast sandwiches. These are all good things and attributes you'd expect in a solid bagel spot. The rub at HBA is the wait time. You will wait and wait until you want to claw your eyeballs out. WTF?? I have shown up as early as 8am on a weekend morning and the line is all the way to the door. Keep in mind, this is a pretty big store, so we're talking maybe 20 people deep. It's kind of ridiculous. It would be nice if the staff were just cranking away, knowing that if they bust balls for a few hours from 7-11 or so, things will eventually quiet down and they can chillax. But no. They chillax at peak hours, too, and there are several of them (6 maybe?). There is no urgency, no expediting of orders, no efficiency or multi-tasking. It's just painfully sloooowwwwwwww. So, you decide. I'd like to say that it's a win/win situation when going out for bagels in South Orange, but I'd be lying. read more

This is it, guys. No bagels can be better than these. This can possibly be the best encounter between bagels and human species. They make their bagels right at the back of the store, not to mention their own mix of cream cheese. The bagels are huge. My favorite is the garlic bagel toasted with eggs and bacons. I usually the nicest person on reviews and Bagels are good, but SERVICE is horrible. There are usually long lines because they are so slow and no one seems to write anything down! So bizarre!! I have ordered Taylor ham, egg white and cheese 4 times and never again. First two times it was not egg whites and 2 very thing slices of taylorham-- I got over that oh well, I can deal with yoke. Third time they gave me a bacon egg (with yoke) and cheese which I didnt realize until I got to my office but I dealt with it since I love that type of sandwich, too. Fourth time I received taylorham egg no cheese... Really?? I laughed after that one and checked it before leaving and asked them to simply throw a slice of cheese on so I can leave. They just need yellow pads with ticket numbers! Not sure how any place works without system. There have also been times when the main manager (possibly owner?) guy helped me with bagel toasted with cream cheese and he either forgot about my bagel while helping someone else and most of the time he helps me he will ask me 2-4 times what bagel, toasted or not, and cream cheese. It's baffling and I just laugh, I'm not someone to get mad ever and still tip a buck. Also, main manager was also involved in two of the taylorham egg white and cheese mess ups-- he asked me 2-3 times and still messed it up. Things to fix their problems: -Stations: someone who does just bagels with butter/cream cheese. Someone who only works register. Someone who works just grill, someone just in deli section. Etc... 1-2 people per station is basic food service knowledge for efficiency. -MOST IMPORTANT: ticket system! I've been going to HBA in South Orange for years; the long lines never bothered me much (unless my meter was running out), but due to how much slower they seem to be getting, the lackluster service, and the slipping quality of their end product; I've been going less and less. Today I found myself next door to HBA and realized I wanted an Everything bagel with cream cheese. I thought to myself, "Okay, how bad can HBA mess this up, it's just a toasted bagel with cream cheese." Well as it turns out they can indeed mess it up. I did of course have to wait in an amazingly slow line, and it wasn't even that long! But the kicker was that upon reaching my house and unwrapping my bagel with hungry anticipation of what I hoped to be enjoying... I was met with a supreme dissatisfaction over a burnt, hard bagel, with a scant amount of cream cheese on it. I mean there was hardly any cream cheese on the bagel at all For crying out loud; I would've gotten more cream cheese on my shoes if Suzie Creamcheese would have strolled on by than what was on that hockey puck of a bagel! Dealing with my disappointment (good thing 7-11 makes some good coffee's) I thought that maybe if I put it in the microwave for a bit it would soften up and be edible, and there's cream cheese in the fridge, yeah that has to salvage this very disappointing bagel.... Well no... it couldn't. There was no salvaging that bagel at all, it just sucked; sucked so bad that I hope the trash can can contain the supreme sucky-ness of that bagel before it envelopes the world and brings us to a horrible, supremely disappointing, burnt-ass end without any cream cheese in sight to help make the inevitable sucky-ness even the least bit better. Needless to say- I do believe I'm quite finished with HBA. Except for maybe popping in to buy a Snapple; I mean they can't screw that up can they? read more

The traditional bagel acoutrements are available: flavored cream cheeses, smoked salmon, whitefish salad, tuna and chicken salads, etc. The bagels here are alright, but not great. They are a bit bland in flavor, and more bready, rather than chewy, in texture. Since Hot Bagels Abroad has long been a staple of my hometown, I've frequented there several times (although never regularly) over the years (certainly not because the food is great but because they essentially have a monopoly on the bagel biz in town). Today will most definitely be my last visit; as usual, the service was terrible and I was left waiting for 10 minutes on a line with only 3 ppl ahead of me. To make matters worse, by the time I finally made my way to the head of the line, someone who had been waiting behind me seemingly cut in front of me and placed his order. Before I could object, I realized, he had placed an order earlier and was just adding to his existing order. So now that it was finally my turn, ANOTHER customer came from behind (this one had obviously not been picking up a priorly placed order) and placed an order ahead of me which the employee took (without correcting him that I was indeed next). At that point in time, I made the logical (and might I say, restrained) decision to silently walk out; there is absolutely no reason, I should be waiting over 10 minutes to place an order when there were originally 3 customers ahead of me and then be insulted by have another customer who came in AFTER me place an order before mine . I don't even blame the customers because the store is inefficiently set-up (there is a single line mixed with those who have already ordered and those who haven't...also this same line is used for those who simply want something quick like a bagel and those who want a more time consuming order like the various hot sandwiches) which leads to confusion. I DO blame the workers there because the line wasn't crowded and I'm certain they saw me standing there for 10+ minutes patiently waiting). To that end, as I attempted to make a quick exit without fanfare, the worker (who just took the order from the person behind me) finally took note of my existence and loudly and incessantly called after me but it was a little too late at that point. My question stands as to why I was marginalized in a relatively large space with a total of 6 customers UNTIL the moment I chose to leave. I'm not one for insinuations or assumptions but I couldn't help but notice that not only was I the only person of color on line but also the only woman (if anything one would presume, I would stand out even more)....certainly I hope my salient characteristics played no part in the deplorable way I was treated as a prospective PAYING customer. From my past experiences, I knew I wasn't missing out on much as the bagels have an underwhelming fluffy/airy texture, not like a proper dense, chewy bagel that can be found in even the most run-of-the-mill bagel shops in NYC.
