I travel a lot and frequent hot dog stands and restaurants. I have been here before many year's ago. Was not impressed then. Decided to try them again since ownership has changed. Ordered my usual, chili dog with mustard and cheese. Expecting shredded cheddar cheese I got cheese sauce. I questioned if they had shredded cheddar. The girl explained they did for a while but not now. The guy cooking the dogs came with an attitude that it's been that way for 20 years what did I expect. They both had some conversation behind the wall and he was not happy with me. Needles to say the dog was not the best and even with new owners it has not gotten any better than the first visit. We stopped at the Hot Dog Hut for lunch while visiting Jax beach. Let me say, the dogs were pretty good but the place is in serious need of an update and a clean up. The staff was friendly. I ordered a jumbo dog with fries and my husband got the double dogs. We both also got drinks. We chose to eat in and as we sat there waiting for our food, I honestly had to question the quality of our food that was cooked in such a dirty place. Before we left, I used the restroom and that too was filthy. Everything looked like it needed a good wipe down with bleach. I normally don't get super excited about a hot dog place but Hot Dog Hut may just have changed my mind! Hubby and I along with one of our friends had lunch here over the weekend. We all loved it! I ordered the Gator - a jumbo dog topped with grilled onions, bacon and a special sauce with a bite. The hot dog itself was cooked well, grilled up nicely on the flat top. The bun was soft and fresh. The grilled onions, bacon and special sauce worked so well together. The sauce had a little bit of a kick to it, less spicy than I expected. Very different than anything I've had before. I totally would recommend this one! Hubby got 3 different hot dogs and I took a bite of each. Here's what he ordered: --Chicago - had all the classic toppings. Tomato slices were nice and thin, the neon green relish was on point and topped with a perfect amount of celery salt. --Texas - chili, onions, jalapeños. Chili dog perfection! The jalapeños were an awesome touch. Hubby's fav. --New York - they nailed the classic NYC hot dog flavors. Kraut, traditional relish and mustard transported me to NYC in one bite. This is perfect family business! I used to work next door from them and they always made everything so perfect! Even though my order is a plain hotdog with ketchup and some fries they still somehow make it taste amazing. The staff are sooo sweet and friendly I absolutely adore them! Always make sure to leave a tip for them because it really makes a difference. Even so- if you decide to sit down and eat it's chill and super lax. After taking swings at the golf course yesterday, it was time to grab something to eat! Since I've arrived to Jacksonville, I've been craving one of those hotdog spots with unique flavored options. After browsing online, hot dog hut seemed the most aligned with my tastes, so my golf buddy and I decided to give them a shot! Going inside, we didn't have to wait very long, and we ordered: 1 Texas dog, 1 Chicago dog, 1 gator dog, and 1 Carolina dog. Moving on with my review, the hot dogs tasted alright, but felt that some of them were missing a little pizzazz. The Texas dog had an underwhelming amount of chili for starters, and was expecting more spice from the jalapeño. As for the Chicago dog, this one I'll admit had been my favorite as it was moist, and had a nice contrast of sweet relish to tangy/hot sport peppers with all the other delicious fixings inside. The gator dog was unfortunately not gator meat, and special sauce dissapointingly reminded me of hot dog with A1 steak house and minced onion. Only thing I liked here was the jumbo size hot dog. Lastly, the Carolina dog was pretty decent, but in my opinion, a little more cheddar, and even a hot sauce (crystal) would really elevate the flavors on this one. Overall, we found Hot Dog Hut alright, but with some small tweaks, this could definitely gain a star or 2. Final verdict 3/5. read more

The jumbo is a fatter, thicker dog, while the foot long is skinny and longer so I prefer the jumbo. I ordered the gator and carolina. The gator was AMAZING. Crumbled bacon, onions, and a special sauce on top. Top notch dog. I wasnt a huge fan of the Carolina dog; chili, cheese, and slaw. The slaw was too sweet for me, and overwhelming. There's a large chalk board menu hanging on the wall with every imaginable combination of hot dog known to man. I went with a regular dog, add mustard & onion and top it off w coleslaw. Theres a pair working the grill and prep station. My dog was ready in short order as I watched the toppings get added and it packed, bagged and served. $3.40 out the door, not a bad deal. I stopped by Sunday afternoon around 2pm and the place was busy, but not packed. There were three tables of four chairs open and 4-5 available stools at the counter. I was alone, so sat at the counter. I looked at the menu and after deciding what I wanted, set it down on the counter. And waited. And waited. And waited some more.
