I'm a Philly guy so my standards are pretty high when it comes to my cheesesteak. I decided to give Big Al's a go after seeing so many good reviews and positive reactions. Unfortunately for me, this place totally missed the mark. The counter gal was helpful and she was highlight of the trip. I got an OG and a side of sweet fries. Now I've been to damn near every corner of Philly and south jersey eating cheesesteaks for the better part of 40 years and I don't think I've ever been sold an Italian beef cheesesteak. This meat was not seasoned well and it had the consistency of pulled pork. Not to mention the cheese wiz didn't even touch the bread. This was one of the driest un flavored Phillys I've ever had, I'm talking Sahara desert in your mouth. Not sure how they are cooking that meat lately, but they sure aren't chopping that ribeye up on a flat top. The bread was probably the most solid part of the sub, and it still was a little tough, you really gotta bite down and tear through it.. the sweet fries were just alright but nothing could upset me more than this huge unflavored sandwich. Do yourself a favor and just go to Surfwiches or Edis & Sons if you want something you won't regret.. I don't like being the bears of bad news, but if they keep serving up that mess they will quickly find themselves out of business. What I can't explain is how some of the pictures posted actually show a true Philly with meat that looks like it was cooked on a grill and not in a slow cooker.. Came here after the cheesesteak debates I've seen all over the internet and said I'll do my own rating lol. This is by far the biggest Philly cheesesteak I've ever seen first hand! I got the large for my parent to share and did a regular for myself and omg delicious. The added peppers and extra meat took it to the next level. Had lunch here one day and ordered the big owl, the food was served quickly and was good I ordered the regular size sandwich that they had and it was still huge and definitely could feed two, The restaurant was clean with vinyl tablecloth which I've never seen before, the owner was there and was very friendly and helpful. Big Al's does deliver on "big" when it comes to their massive cheesesteaks. The sandwich is either for someone with a massive appetite or perfect for people to share. The steak is tender and not chopped up to finely which I prefer since I can appreciate the quality more. The standout is their homemade cheese sauce which really does make a difference compared to the traditional cheez wiz. The texture and flavor are much better and really brings the whole sandwich together. Only note for the sandwich I would make is a touch more seasoning on the steak itself. We also referred wings and they were crispy but weren't a standout. The fries we got were perfectly crisp and seasoned it went really well with the cheesesteak. And HUGE! 18" is large ... and the homemade cheese whiz incorporated into the meat with the grilled onions - perfection. Everyone was welcoming and wanted to ensure we were enjoying our meal. I tried Big Al's Cheesesteaks today. A small sub is $12.00, enough for two people. But, probably won't go back. It was good, but not much flavor or seasoning. They are located in the former Lewey's place on University Blvd. Across from Wawa. Let me know what you think when you go. I don't like knocking new businesses down when they're new, but I have to be honest here. I will probably go back again after they have been there for a while. Then, I will update my review. A small could easily serve 2, however I'm greedy so I ate the entire thing. I'm definitely curious about the large and will be ordering that next time. My little girl ordered the seasoned fries and chicken tenders. Not gonna lie, I couldn't help myself and sampled her meal as well. The fries were crisp and seasoned well. She explained which sandwich was the best for what I was looking for also prices even told me which cheese I would like the most Now the food... the meat was seasoned well . I added mushrooms and cherry peppers -- but here's the thing... they weren't grilled big no-no in my book! Please please grill the veggies and mushrooms next time I'm also not the biggest fan of the small crumb-style meat, but flavor-wise it was still hittin' Now the hot lemon pepper wings -- those were actually really good! We stopped by Big Al's Cheesesteaks and it definitely lived up to the hype! We ordered the Dirty Bird, the OG, cheesesteak fries, and sweet potato fries for our 1-year-old. We were greeted right when we walked in and told it might be about a 45-minute wait since they had a ton of online orders coming through. We grabbed a few drinks from the cooler -- a Diet Coke for me and a Juanito for the kids -- and settled in. To our surprise, our food came out much faster than expected, maybe only a 20-minute wait! Everything was absolutely delicious -- fresh bread, plenty of cheese, and incredible flavor. There was a constant stream of people coming through the door the whole time we were there, which says a lot. They could probably do with a few more seating options inside but there are several picnic tables with umbrellas just outside too. Did i get duped? I'm not sure i understand the hype. We ordered a large OG w 2 sides of fries. Food came out hot!! So that's a plus, but our "shaved beef" was more like Italian beef/slow cooked and shredded with cheese sauce on top. Some of the photos looks like actual shaved beef but that's not what we got. Service was fine, she answered our questions when asked about the menu. Ambience leaves a little to be desired but i could overlook that if the food was better. read more

The Chicken Philly had way more flavor and would actually be my preference if I ever return. The fries were up there with some of the worst I have ever had from a restaurant. They were a little airy, lightly seasoned but the bad part was the texture for me. Ketchup couldn't even fix these. The prices are fair with the amount of food you get but if you know what a true Philly cheesesteak tastes like you will be highly disappointed. Just my opinion. I don't usually write reviews, but this was honestly one of the worst cheesesteaks I've had. The meat was extremely dry and completely flavorless. I asked for sliced cheese melted into the meat but was only offered cheese wiz until I pushed back and they finally gave me sliced cheese. Basic condiments like ketchup and mayo are self serve, which is fine, but mayo is usually spread on the bread before the meat, not something you add afterward. There were no onions mixed in with the meat, and by the time I got home (a 20 minute drive), the sandwich was cold, like it had come straight out of the fridge. Since we went shortly after they opened on Sunday, I can't help but wonder if the meat was leftover from the day before. Service was decent, but the steak was so disappointing that if zero stars were an option, that's what I'd give. Is it big? Yes. Is the quality good? Absolutely not. My friend and I gave Big AL's Cheesesteaks a try about two months ago and ordered the Big Al and OG. The good: service, ambience, and seating. The Bad: The big Al was ok but I did not like their version of Cooper cheese blend. In addition they did not really season the meat. The bread was just ok. They did not use the typical Philly styled roll. Their version of cooper house blended Cooper cheese has a bitter aftertaste. My friend thought the house cheesewiz was good on the OG. I tasted it and did not like it. I spent a lot of time in the Philly area and know what a well made cheesesteak should taste like. Who ever heard of cheesewiz on a Philly? So I gave them an another try today and asked for the Big Al with provolone cheese. They said that they do not offer sandwiches made with provolone cheese so I ordered white American instead . The Big AL was served on stale bread and more cheese than meat. The top bun was rock hard. It was not eatable! The cheese used made the sandwich too salty. I am disappointed that I have to give a new establishment a bad review but I must tell the truth. I don't think I will be eating there again until they get it together. read more
