Big Al's Cheesesteaks is definitely an experience. The portions of beef and cheese are huge. I personally could have had a little less, but still overall a good experience. If you like a good amount of cheese and beef and want a bang for your buck, I think you'll really enjoy this place. I don't think this was quite my speed, but I definitely think it's worth trying. I also have to shout out the fact that they have soft drinks in glass bottles which are my absolute favorite way of drinking a soft drink if I decide to indulge. Cheesesteak was really good and flavorful. Originally, I was thinking these are some expensive cheesesteaks but I understood once I got the sandwich. It was massive and loaded with meat, definitely enough to share with 2-3 people. Mind you, this is only the half size. The service was good, the cashier was very polite. I waited about 10-15 minutes, which I didn't too much mind because I knew it was being made fresh. Much worth the wait, that sandwich was still piping hot after 15-20 minutes of driving home once I got to eat it. My only complaint was that the meat was quite fatty, which was a first time experience for me while eating a cheesesteak. Came here after the cheesesteak debates I've seen all over the internet and said I'll do my own rating lol. This is by far the biggest Philly cheesesteak I've ever seen first hand! Went to try out the "best cheesesteak" in Jacksonville. It's a 30 minute ride each way. Picked up my order and took it back home at the beaches. When I got home I was disappointed to find the steak on their cheesesteak fries was undercooked - raw meat throughout. I ordered two small sandwiches - one was loaded with meat and one was very light on the meat. One of my bites had raw steak in it. I called the restaurant - she offered to replace the items if I brought them back - an hour each way for subpar food was not gonna happen. The standout is their homemade cheese sauce which really does make a difference compared to the traditional cheez wiz. The texture and flavor are much better and really brings the whole sandwich together. Only note for the sandwich I would make is a touch more seasoning on the steak itself. We also referred wings and they were crispy but weren't a standout. The fries we got were perfectly crisp and seasoned it went really well with the cheesesteak. Last true Philly cheesesteaks (aka PC) I had was at Pat's/ Geno's back to back years ago. I still remember Geno's "skull and crossbones" sauce! I've never ordered a PC here in JAX anymore than I would expect to get fresh shrimp if I was in Philly. Just say no. Anyhoo, I saw this Youtube seg about "the best PCs in JAX". While watching, I thought Big Al's PC was THE one I wanted to eat. Big Al's ended up winning. so I drove down from Fernandina to try it. First, parking is limited and the joint itself is very plain - if you want fancy, this ain't it. However, it IS fancier than Pat's in S. Philly. The cashier was friendly. Big Al was standing right there and provided more info as to what to order. It's great to see an owner involved with his enterprise - especially a restaurant. I ended up getting the OG and Big Al suggested a side of cherry peppers to spice it up. My sandwich was cooked to order and delivered by Big Al himself. (coolio) The sandwich looked like it did on TV so I allowed myself a little excitement at this point. I added the cherry peppers, some of the Mexican hot sauce and went to town. My OG was obviously fresh cooked The meat was steamy and the homemade "whiz" was melty with a pleasant slight tang. The ribeye portion was substantial. I appreciate the measured amount of salt added . The roll was fresh baked - crusty on the outside while pillowy on the inside. PC EPIC. IMO, Big Al's is truly a transplanted taste of Philly and is a straightforward gem of the JAX restaurant scene. I will definitely be back soon and bring some of my Philly friends. read more

I'm a Philly guy so my standards are pretty high when it comes to my cheesesteak. I decided to give Big Al's a go after seeing so many good reviews and positive reactions. Unfortunately for me, this place totally missed the mark. The counter gal was helpful and she was highlight of the trip. I got an OG and a side of sweet fries. Now I've been to damn near every corner of Philly and south jersey eating cheesesteaks for the better part of 40 years and I don't think I've ever been sold an Italian beef cheesesteak. This meat was not seasoned well and it had the consistency of pulled pork. Not to mention the cheese wiz didn't even touch the bread. This was one of the driest un flavored Phillys I've ever had, I'm talking Sahara desert in your mouth. Not sure how they are cooking that meat lately, but they sure aren't chopping that ribeye up on a flat top. The bread was probably the most solid part of the sub, and it still was a little tough, you really gotta bite down and tear through it.. the sweet fries were just alright but nothing could upset me more than this huge unflavored sandwich. Do yourself a favor and just go to Surfwiches or Edis & Sons if you want something you won't regret.. I don't like being the bears of bad news, but if they keep serving up that mess they will quickly find themselves out of business. We stopped by Big Al's Cheesesteaks and it definitely lived up to the hype! We ordered the Dirty Bird, the OG, cheesesteak fries, and sweet potato fries for our 1-year-old. We were greeted right when we walked in and told it might be about a 45-minute wait since they had a ton of online orders coming through. We grabbed a few drinks from the cooler -- a Diet Coke for me and a Juanito for the kids -- and settled in. To our surprise, our food came out much faster than expected, maybe only a 20-minute wait! Everything was absolutely delicious -- fresh bread, plenty of cheese, and incredible flavor. There was a constant stream of people coming through the door the whole time we were there, which says a lot. They could probably do with a few more seating options inside but there are several picnic tables with umbrellas just outside too. So that's a plus, but our "shaved beef" was more like Italian beef/slow cooked and shredded with cheese sauce on top. Some of the photos looks like actual shaved beef but that's not what we got. The Chicken Philly had way more flavor and would actually be my preference if I ever return. The fries were up there with some of the worst I have ever had from a restaurant.
