Stopped in for a quick lunch on a weekday and we just beat the lunch rush! This is a small place run by 2-3 people, manning both kitchen and the hall so patience is key when you're here during peak lunch hours. Steady stream of pick up and takeout orders seem to pile up quickly. We ordered spring rolls, Panang beef curry and Thai chicken noodle soup for lunch and packed a shrimp green curry and rad na for dinner later. The panang beef curry was choke full of veggies and large slices of beef enrobed in fairly mild red curry with a side of rice. This was delicious and definitely will order again. Thai chicken noodle soup arrived with fried garlic bits and a very flavourful darker broth (guessing due to the cow/pig blood & dark soy sauce used) which seemed small when I received it but it was definitely enough food at lunch. Everything about this noodle soup was superb! It was a pleasant surprise to come back in such a long time to an improved food experience. I'll be back for more for sure! read more

I came here hoping to try some local Thai food in Pickering. The place is located in the commercial plaza beside Pickering Go station. When we walked in there were was no tables setup. Just takeout. There was a young boy who came to the front cashier to take my order. We asked the owner for suggestions on what to order and she said everything is good and couldn't suggest a dish for us. Oh well... We ended up ordering red curry chicken and pad see eew with beef. The total came up to $30 approx. The young boy didn't really have good customer service skills and I told him I wanted number 4 on the menu and he replied back "I know." I didn't take any offense and kept an open mind. We were looking forward to trying the food as the owner said the food is really good. The red curry was aromatic and rich. I was surprised there wasn't any spice level nor did she ask if we wanted it spicy or mild. Would have like more chicken in the serving but there was bambo shoots, long green beans, red peppers, and potato. The pad see eew was cooked fresh to order. The dish consists of wide rice noodles, beef flank bok choy and broccoli. This really hit the spot although the presentation was not the greatest. Some things to note. The menu had the prices blacked out so we were at the mercy of the owner who could set any price. Please update your menus so your customers know how much they are spending. If you want some decent Thai food give them a try. Just be ready to order as they won't really help you with the menu. Maybe it was an off day but the owner wasn't really in the mood to talk to us nor greet us after walking in. Small improvements can go a long way. Hot Mama Noi's is the best Thai food in Pickering, in my opinion. If you want to know more, then check my earlier review, but I would like to say that the tradition of Thai food excellence continues! Judging from the clientele, Hot Mama's is a favorite of many Pickering diners, including a bunch of Firefighters, who parked their firetruck beside this little, unassuming restaurant and popped in for a bite of Thai food. I was picking up my take-away order and saw them sitting in the restaurant. It's not the first time either, and I've seen the police there too, just to eat Thai food. If you consider that an endorsement, then I may as well stop writing this review, but I still want to go on and tell you why Hot Mama Noi's deserves 5 stars. My ultimate favorite is shrimp Pad See Eew, with toothsome thick noodles, impossibly plump and juicy shrimp (seriously, these shrimp ... wow), and warm, savory Thai seasoning. My daughter went for the wings, which were excellent, and my son had Cashew Chicken. The chicken was juicy and tender, the sauce lively without being killer hot. Spring rolls were generous in size and very flavorful. Everything came with rice, which was fluffy and nicely seasoned. I saw Mama Noi herself in the kitchen, cooking the foods. This is a wonderful, little, local place and exactly the kind of establishment that I like to encourage in my community. As I say, the shrimp Pad See Eew is to die for, although I think that I should branch out and try some of the other noodle dishes. I know that I tried the Pad Mama years ago, when I first reviewed this restaurant, and was similarly impressed. The restaurant is right beside Horn Dawgs, and it is crazy to have two great restaurants side-by-side in such an unassuming location. Do not judge a book by its cover! I drive past this place all the time and I've eaten at the place next door but I've never had the urge to eat here. The signage is rather plain and the windows are always covered, not looking very inviting. I took a chance tonight and that was a good thing! It's a small-ish place with seating for about 30 diners. There's a small service counter, taking care of takeout orders and cashing out when you're done eating. The small kitchen is behind all that but you can get a glimpse of the magic happening back there. I ordered the Spicy Basil (chicken, stir-fried peppers, onions, chilies, green beans, and basil leaves), served with steamed rice. It arrived all on one plate, smelling really good. There was no shortage of flavour in this dish. It was very good. All the ingredients were cooked well and blended well together. The only thing I would change is to have the rice in its own bowl. Yes, that's more Chinese style but I like to control exactly how much gravy I have with my rice and this dish had lots of gravy. The house-made sauces, ginger and chilies, are worthy of mention. I tried them both and they were really tasty, with a good amount of heat in the hot sauce. The dish didn't need any more seasonings but the sauces were too good to resist. Quite a few regulars came to pick up orders while I was there and one of Durham's finest police officers was having dinner when I arrived. He declared Hot Mama Noi's to be the best Thai food in Durham. He wouldn't lie, would he? I'll have to gather more evidence before I could agree or disagree. Mama Noi may be making the best Thai food I've ever had. You can tell it's stick-to-your-ribs, made in your Thai mama's kitchen, I-dont-care-if-it's-heathy-or-fancy goodness. We ordered some BBQ next door and my wife wanted to give this place a try b/c its Thai food and it mentioned 'Authentic'. We ordered a pad thai chicken-$ 16.5 - It has your standard items like rice noodle, bean sprout, peanuts, sauce, chinese vegetable of sort... - We've had quite a bit of pad thai during our time and we'd say this dish was not good at all... The noodle was clumpy and sticky, the sauce didn't taste like tamarind, and they didn't use chives but used some chinese vegetable instead... We'd say its not 'Authentic' unfortunately...There are better spots in the durham area we noticed that were far better... Won't be back for this one unfortunately... =( read more

One of those hole in the wall, mom and pop places that bring authentic flavours and a smaller menu. I think it's a solid spot if you like Thai food. We loved our pad thai and massman curry. We also ordered some veggies on the side which hit the spot. Sometimes it takes a while to get your food, but also remember that there's only a few people running the entire place. Literally I think it's just two people...one at the front and one in the kitchen. Mama Noi is proud of her food and you can definitely tell. It feels like.. a home cooked meal. which I guess it is haha. They also do take out, which I recommend if you live near by. It's a small location so there's not an abundance of seating. Another successful and yummy lunch...forgot to take pics of food but we ordered: Pad thai chicken, green curry chicken, mango chicken, chicken wings, spring rolls, mango salad, and shrimp rad na (new dish to me but so happy I ventured out and tried it). Fed 4 adults and a 6 yr old with enough left over for dinner for 2 adults and 6 yr old! Was hoping to have it delivered (back in May or June), but had to get my lazy butt out to pick up the food. This restaurant has been on my "to-do" list for a while now and I finally got the chance to go. Our first attempt was a failure as their debit/credit machine was down and were only accepting something called "cash". Huh. Oh well, off to our favourite Indian place instead. Our next attempt was a hit! The restaurant was empty and we were told to sit wherever we wanted. We selected a table and my husband went to use the restroom before settling in to peruse the menu. He quickly returned to the counter asking for the key...? I looked at him and mouthed "the key?" to which, he shrugged and returned to the restroom with said key in hand. Meanwhile a mother and her young child had entered the restaurant. The mother immediately went to the counter to either place or pickup their order and the young girl, who appeared to be busting at the seams, went off to the restroom. As my husband was just exiting, he handed the key to the girl and as he retuned to our table, advised the lady who had given the key to him. Mistake. My husband was reprimanded for doing this and was instructed that, in future, the key MUST be retuned to her. Our order placing was rushed and almost seemed to be an inconvenience. The restaurant had started to fill up so that's fair, I guess. The food came and I was satisfied with the portion size but admittedly, I expected more for the price. I ordered Mussaman Curry with chicken and it was really quite good. I don't know of any other Thai place in Pickering that offered Mussaman Curry and it's definitely one of my favourite dishes so I was happy to see it and simply had to order it! My husband ordered the Cashew Chicken. We also ordered some spring rolls just to live on the edge. Everything we ordered tasted great and I left with a happy belly... I'm just not convinced with the experience. After a killer exercise class, my fellow workout friends were hungry and insisted we go to Mama Noi's. They are from the Pickering area and said it's one of their favourites. I can't say no to Thai food, so I tagged along. Located close to the Pickering GO Station, we entered a small restaurant with glass tables. My first thought was that they would all see how messy I am when I'm eating. Damn. They offered Ginger Tea, Green Tea and the usual assortment of pop and water. Some loved the ginger tea, others not so much. I love that they give you a full size pot instead of those leaky, single serving tea pots. The menu is 1 page, double sided and full of irresistible choices. Almost everyone ordered something different, so I really got to see a variety of dishes they offer. My friends were disappointed that Mama Noi herself was not there. They said that she will greet her guests to make sure everything tastes to their liking. They said she is very friendly and pleasant; I was sad I didn't get to meet her! My friends ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken, Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Thai & Pad See Eew. I had the Masaman Chicken. The couple that frequent this place had the Pad Thai and Pad See Eew. The Tom Yum Soup is highly recommended by them. They've tried many things on the menu and had no complaints about any of them. The couple that shared the Sweet & Sour Chicken and Pineapple Fried Rice enjoyed it. They expected the Sweet & Sour to be more like the Chinese style, but still liked it. My Masaman Chicken(I say it wrong every time) was fantastic. Lots of sauce to eat with the rice and the smell was divine; it was making everyone else hungrier! The veggies were tender and cooked in the sauce with a good amount of chicken. The prices are very reasonable and the service was great. I can't wait to go back. 3.5 star Eating at Hot Mama Noi's Thai on the Fly does reminds me of my experience of eating Street food in Thailand. Fresh simple ingredients made with attention and care just like how home cooking suppose to be. My Pad See Ew requested extra spicy was A-OK. Portion definitely on a smaller size but does have the great complexity of taste of fish sauce, soy sauce and of course chili! Deco is really simple, just like those restaurants in Thailand that local people visit. I ordered the chicken pad thai, and the cashew chicken. The chicken pad thai was average, but nothing to rave about. The chicken cashew was a huge disappointment. Minimal chicken, and mostly sauce and vegetables. For a second I thought they ordered me chicken soup instead. Overall a huge let down and I will be weary of trying asian places in Durham. This food is fantastic. We have been here a few years ago, and always loved their food. We don't live very close so it's not always on my radar of where to eat. When we found ourselves in Pickering this weekend, we decided to pick up some take out. Their food is so good. We had the red curry and pad Thai. The portions are fantastic and everything tastes fresh and hot. The spring rolls were just made; they were huge and delicious. Some of the best I've had. Can't wait to go back- when I'll hopefully remember to take a picture before I chow down! They also truly respected masking and social distancing which made me feel really good ordering my food. I think one word will describe this place: Simple The place is small and simply decorated. Looks like a family run business. The menu is one page and double sided. Ordered the Masaman with shrimp $11.99 - very simple ingridents which consisted of onions, cashew nuts, potatoes and carrots. The sauce had its coconut milk flavour and had a nice sweet taste to it. The shrimps were fresh and large and there were 6 of them. Yes, I counted how many shrimps there were and I do it for all you guys and gals out there reading reviews. For $11.99 you can't go wrong. The only thing I can complain about is the limited selection on the menu. They could use an appetizer section. I ordered the Masaman Chicken Curry ($9.99) and it was good, definitely had fish sauce and ground up nuts inside, and on the sweeter side. I'd say that it was fairly mild. Chunks of potato were too big and there was a lot of them. They were also undercooked, so slightly crunchy. Flavours were there, but I would've enjoyed it more if the potatoes were smaller and cooked more. This little outlet can go toe to toe with any of the big boys of Thai food. They have a small menu, which is a very very very intelligent thing to do. The food is absolutely perfect. The restaurant is small, but still manages decent amount of seating. Don't judge this book by its cover, because the book is freakin delicious. Pad Thai is a 5/5, Massaman curry is a 5/5, Spring rolls are a 5/5. They also get bonus points for their delicious side sauces, which really took me by surprise. Will get their names the next time, but they were just as good as the main dishes. It's a small operation, one person cooking and the other doings pretty much everything else. So I imagine things can get a bit hairy during peak times. But I really hope they keep up the good work and stick to their standards, as I would hate to see this place slide down the scale. read more

Arriving at the GO station, I had a choice between going to the Pickering Town Centre for lunch, but brought up the Yelp app and found this place right beside it. Needless to say I decided to try it out given the excellent reviews. Now as I was saying about hole in the wall...there's literally no decorations in here. It's basically a unit with some tables, kitchen, and then you pay at the cashier. Very simple, and with that the prices are lower than most other Thai places. I had the chicken pad thai, which tasted very good. I've had better in some other places, but for $10 I definitely think this is excellent value. Service was excellent and I was happy to give them more tips than usual since it's a family run local business. The A/C wasn't working when I was eating, so it was a little hot...but honestly, you're in and out in 30 minutes for the most part. Hope this place survives in the long run, definitely a place I'll consider the few times I'll be in Pickering! read more

There is a reason your friends keep telling you to go here. This is incredible flavour, reasonable prices, and friendly service; whether dining in or taking out. "But there's a thai restaurant in the food court at the mall, why don't I just go there? It's all the same, right?" I hear you ask. You've got some attitude, mister. The menu here is simplified to about 15-20 dishes, all of which are incredible. Like spicy things? They've got spicy things. Like non-spicy things? They've got non spicy things. Like spaghetti? They don't have that. But they have other dishes with noodles that are well worth trying. A word of advice for first timers, get the Pad Mama. It's a spin on a pad thai dish (which they also have) that I order pretty much every dang time I go there. If I had to ding it for something; the interior of the restaurant is not the nicest looking place (you can tell that they deal mostly in takeout), but it's comfy, quiet , and as said before service is prompt. I can say I've eaten more hot mamas food, than anyone else. If you're lucky she might have something special that's not on the menu. I've had salmon, lobster, turkey and more. All with a Thai flare. Very tasty and you can make spicy or not. I wonder why it's states on wifi it there and free it's the phone number. It doesn't cost the owner so not sure why she wouldn't share. They took my order but called back angrily as I was not there by 8pm (which is their closing time). They should have advised on the phone that they were closing in 5 mins and/or not taken the order. Really good thai food. My husband and I have been trying all the places in pickering and ajax looking for a good thai place. This is the best once yet. We got their spring rolls which were amazing! They make everything in-house. I had the pad thai. To have a pad thai that isn't bland or dry was a nice surprise. It was full of flavor. My husband had the red curry chicken, also really good. Ordered the spicy basil chicken with a fried egg (paid extra) and two small sauces (paid extra). Total came to just under $17. I was asked if I want the fried egg with runny yolk or cooked through. I asked for runny but what I got was fully cooked. Also a dollar for two tiny sauces is a bit extra. When our table asked for the serving cutlery for our plates, she got angry with us because we should have told her this at the same time we asked for water. Apparently she doesn't like waiting on tables even for the necessary stuff. I used to bring tons of friends there but I stopped.
