Fantastic flavour balance, beautiful lobster curry Atmosphere: The restaurant is very open with a high ceiling a nice casual vibe with abstract art and darker colours throughout. Great for a small group of friends or a family, and can accommodate larger party sizes as well. There is a small parking lot near the end of the plaza strip, and more underground parking as well. Food: The lobster combo was fantastic for our group of 3. The food came pretty quickly, with a great Thai mango salad to start and the curry lobster was served at the table with the curry being poured in front of us. The mango was nice and slightly sweet and sour, with a nice cracker crunch to compliment it. The curry lobster was nice and rich, with a thick curry/gravy perfect for the French bread loaf to soak in. The lobster was on the smaller side, but was nicely cooked and the flavour was a good balance of umami, sweet and savoury. The soup was also very rich with a sweet and sour flavour that paired nicely with the shrimp, mussels, and squid within. The pad kee mao was also very rich with thick noodles, beef, and a spicy, sour, and sweet flavour profile. The portion size was a little small for the pad kee mao and bread, but considering it was meant for 2 people, it was reasonable for the price. The dessert was a little disappointing, as the sticky rice was a bit on the softer side, and the mango was much too sour/tart yet still very ripe that threw off the dish. Had it been a bit sweeter, it would be a perfect cap to the combo. Service: The servers were friendly and generally out of the way unless you flagged them down. I recently visited this restaurant after hearing some good things about their new combos. We made a reservation ahead of time, which turned out to be a smart move since it was quite busy on a weekend dinner. The ambiance is comfortable and clean, making it a nice place to sit and enjoy your meal. We ordered the lobster special combo. It didn't say how many people it could feed, so we just decided to order 1 additional thing for the 4 of us which was enough. Overall, everything was enjoyable. The soup that came with the combo was packed with flavor and a good amount of seafood. The curry also had great flavor, but I personally didn't think it paired as well with the lobster. I did enjoy the sauce tho, and wish there was more baguette to dip into the sauce! I ended up taking the extra home, and adding it to rice and got a great second meal! The standout dish, however, was definitely the Pad Kee Mao. The flavor and texture were on point, and it was easily the highlight of the meal. As for the mango sticky rice, while it was a nice touch to end the meal, the portion was a bit small for my liking. For the extra dish, I wanted to try their street-style Pad Thai as this is something I always like to order at Thai restaurants. Unfortunately, compared to the Pad Kee Mao, it felt kind of bland and lacked the flavor depth I was hoping for. mr. Tran ordered thru Ubereats since he thought they had an amazing BOGO padthai deal. He got 2 orders of chicken padthai, which comes with veggie rolls. We got our order, and he was the first one to eat it. It looked very orange, not a lot of ingredients other than noodles, but edible. He said thai express tasted better and the veggie rolls were not that great. I only had a couple bites, it was okay. I've had better padthai elsewhere. I will start off by saying I have mixed feelings about this place My other half and I came for lunch at 2pm on a weekday and the restaurant was empty except for us. We ordered two lunch specials, the food was decent and service also decent. Not the cheapest but fair value. What caught me off guard though is the automatic 12% tip added to our bill. Like any other Canadian I do my fair share of tipping, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when tip is automatically added on to the bill. I understand if we were a large party, or the restaurant was slammed there may be an auto-gratuity. But literally we were the only table of two people ordering a set lunch with no adjustments. This left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth as tipping is discretionary and doesn't even exist in Asia or Europe basically. It was on a weekday and there weren't many customers there so it felt a little strange that they took so long. Their dishes came with good portions. I'd asked them to put extra chili in mine but it really was not spicy at all. Even though I can handle my spice, I double checked with my coworker who ordered the same thing without extra spice and she said the original one wasn't spicy either. Unlike me, she can't handle spice. The spring rolls weren't spectacular, decent if you will. The rice was on the drier side. It was a bit on the pricier side despite the lunch special. The person explained to me that Pad See Eww and Pad Kee Mao is more or less the same, but Pad Kee Mao is a bit more spicier... Pad Kee Mao Beef-$20- I like that there is flat noodles used and some basil, but it also contained broccoli, bell peppers and the beef was a bit tough too. On Saturday, I recommended a Thai restaurant that I love to a couple of business owners that I have developed a nice rapport over the last couple of months. It was nice that they trusted my suggestion and they loved their lunch experience there. It got me thinking that I don't have a go-to Thai place that I truly love near me. The ones that I have frequented are okay. I need one that makes me crave going there every week. Last Saturday, I did a search on my food apps and found BOGO deals on Canadian Thai. The name already made me think that perhaps it was more Canadian renditions of Thai food than authentic ones. I decided to give ordering from here a try. I got these items: - Vegetable spring rolls (BOGO) - Fresh pineapple fried rice (BOGO) - Thai vegetable coconut soup My order had a pickup time of twenty minutes. It was perfect, as I was coming from downtown Markham. There are a number of new stores in this area. It's in the same area where my bank, Tangerine, is. It's a new plaza on the southeast corner of Steeles and Woodbine. Parking is interesting. You can park in the lot for three hours. I parked on the street and wasn't sure how long you could park there. I knew that I'd be there momentarily, so I didn't bother hitting the parking lot. I walked into the eatery on a Saturday at around 5:30 pm. There were a few customers. I saw my bag of food on the table. I indicated my name and that I had an Uber Eats order to a woman who had said hi. I got my goodies from her, who was efficient to wish me a good evening, as did her colleague. It was hard to say whether they were friendly. I felt like it was more here-you-go-bye-now than nice. I drove home and chowed down. I ate the veggie spring rolls first. They were delicious. They were super crispy and had the perfect amount of filling. The sweet and sour dip wasn't overly sweet and was light. I loved it. The downside is that two rolls go for $6.99, which I find pricey, but I was okay getting quality over price. It kind of goes downhill from here. I got the Thai coconut soup. I love soup. The menu didn't mention that it was spicy. Apparently, this one was. I didn't realize that it had tiny pepper flakes at the bottom. When I took a spoonful, it irritated my throat (weird) such that I coughed up a storm. I am generally good with spicy soup, but I totally wasn't expecting it here. I was okay. I didn't have to do self-CPR. The vegetable chunk sizes were also odd. I got carrot slices that were like mini suns either setting or rising. I'm not big on zucchini. Of course, they were large cubes of them. Then, there were smaller broccoli florets that had spent more time in the soup and were mostly yellow. The mushrooms were small, but good. This soup would have been better if the veggies were more consistent in size and didn't have sneaky spices creeping up on me like a bad prank. The coconut milk and lemongrass flavours were decent. This small container of soup was $6.59. It wasn't worth the coughing fit that I had from it. I can get a giant, yummy version of it from my favourite Thai place in Whitchurch-Stouffville and not die from consuming it. Fresh pineapple fried rice. The fresh part should have made me think twice about ordering it. The protein sizes were inconsistent, like the veggies in the soup. The whole shrimp were generous in size. There was chicken, but you had to carefully find them because they were tiny. The pineapple were small cubes, and weren't as sweet or juicy than I had hoped for. The carrots were larger cubes. The peas were normal! This place was generous with supplying whole cashews. There was nothing Thai about this fried rice. It was more on the oily side and tasted like regular fried rice, but had a strong fish taste (it didn't seem like fish sauce at all, but something else) that made me deem it not yummy. I was expecting basil or something more fragrant. Nope, just a ton of fried rice that put me in a carb coma and I needed to reach for an antacid because I had oil for dinner. Regularly, this fried rice is $23.99. I don't feel that it's worth it. I would rather get yeung chow fried rice at a third of the price at a Chinese establishment and it would be far yummier. Needless to say, I am still on the search for a closer-to-home Thai restaurant that I like. Luckily, there are still Thai places that I enjoy, but have to drive a bit further to get decent grub. I do not think this is the best food option for Thai food in Markham. If this was the only option it is good, but there are much better places than this one in the area. The pad Thai was pretty ketchupy and the sticky mango wasn't cut, they just put the mango with the peel on the plate... which I found kind of weird as usually the mango is peeled. I loved the beautiful interior inside as it gave a classy, yet comfortable vibe. The service was great as our server was very accommodating when I needed to snap photos, and was also very welcoming and polite to not just me, but the other customers as well. Their menu offers a good selection of classic Thai dishes, as well as some Szechuan fares as well. The food came out fairly quick, and the portion sizes were very reasonable for the price. My first visit here was very enjoyable. I popped in for a take out lunch special and although the place was almost at capacity, I was out the door in 5 minutes with lunch in hand. I opted for the General Tao lunch special which came with plain rice, a Hot & Sour soup (I think that's what it was) and a spring roll for $8.95. With a pop, the whole thing came out to $12. The portions are very fair for that price and the meal was very enjoyable. The General Tao Chicken had a very different sauce than I am used to. It was dark, and soy based, sweet with some whole chilies, green pepper and onion slices within. And there was plenty of it, enough for every grain of rice to get some. To me, it was reminiscent of a black peanut sauce usually served with beef. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious! The soup was good and piping hot. The spring roll was a spring roll. Although anyone with a peanut allergy should be wary going into a "Thai" resto, even this Chinese dish had a peanutty flavour. Be sure before you order. I've taken the liberty of posting the lunch special menu again as some of the photos posted here have far-outdated prices. The interior of the place is clean, modern and inviting. For around $12 at lunch you can get one of their dishes (most recently I had the Mango Beef which was nice but my favorite of their offerings is their Red Thai Curry), a soup of the day, steamed rice, and a spring roll. My mom had wanted to try this place for years, since we pass by it on our way to and back from badminton up at the Sheraton on Highway 7. Fail. 2) Spicy Thai Basil with Eggplant - excessively heavy on the sauce, which had me trying to scape if off the vegetables. The eggplant was perfectly ripe, long beans were cooked well and the celery was fresh. Bare pass. 3) Pad Thai - I think they had a 8-year-old in the kitchen make ketchup noodles for me. Very sour, stingy on the peanut and lime. Epic fail. 4) Mango juice ($2.95) - out of the can, you can't screw this up. In total, our bill came to $26, which wasn't bad. The service was outstanding and the servers made a great deal of effort to attend to each table, even stopping to chat with the family and ask about their kids. They knew that we weren't regulars, so come time for us to leave, the waitress asked us about our food. Awkwardly, I could only say that the eggplant was too salty. It's really hard to tell someone that your food sucks, especially when we're Chinese and everyone is speaking in Cantonese. I wouldn't come back here, but wouldn't mind if I was stuck in the area for something to eat. As I said before, I wasn't able to try the curries. Wanted to write a quick review because I would have never stepped into here based on the awning. My materialistic self, was brought here by a few friends that live in the area. Immediately after entering the restaurant the decor was pleasant and staff was friendly. Everything from the water with fresh lemons, the coconut milk based soup and beef salad was delicious. The beef salad had a great portion of beef, and had the right amount of sour and sweet. I would recommend it as a light meal or appetizer. The pad thai on other tables looked and smelled great! looked very popular. My friend ordered the deep fried tofu and the basil eggplant. Both were well seasoned and cooked. The sign that this place takes pride it its work, is the eggplant. Often eggplant can be over cooked or rubbery, but the prep and execution of the dish was on the money. I'll tell you what this is, but first let me get through the dry stuff..and I don't mean the food. Cute little place with a clean floor, well placed chairs and not a completely boring layout of a completely white guy's idea of a Thai restaurant. Nice lady that comes from the front desk which is really at the desk. They really should call it the back desk, there's no such thing as a front desk at restaurants...or maybe I'm the only person who calls it the front desk. Who cares. I never had pad thai in my life, so I ordered the beef pad thai. I asked what pd thai was, and I got even more confused after being given the explaination. This place spent more than just pocket change on decoration, but damn it's kinda depressing here. Orange light doesn't work for anything. I think orange is the colour of boredom. I mean, oranges are boring......you know what I'm saying?? I got some spring rolls and shrimp rolls, and I went home. So let me now tell you what this place actually is; a small town Asian restaurant in Markham. Markham is now a city....so FAIL! Nice staff, lovely service....uninspired food. I just love this spot. Not just the food which is the closest to thai food since i was in thailand but the cozy atmosphere and the snippy server. A buddy of mine and myself have been coming for years when we work here and its a gem. The spice doesnt feel powerful but the bite lingers like a girlfriend whos left things in your house. I have ordered take-out lunch from Canadian Thai, twice a month, for the past several months. I'm surprised it took me this long to say, I really enjoy their yellow curry chicken with rice! Their lunch special is such a great value, for only about 10 bucks taxes in you get a container of yellow curry chicken with vegetables and lots of sauce to soak into the 2nd container of steamed white rice. Additionally you get a container of hot and sour soup, and a spring roll. Great value. The taste is excellent. I've tried their green curry and while its spiciness level wasn't as high as I expected (being that it had 3 chili symbols on the menu) it was still very good. I have yet to try the red curry. I haven't dined in, but each time I go to pick up my order the place is always jam packed with diners during the lunch hour. Having tried a few other dishes on their lunch menu, I can say that the other dishes, in my opinion, are good, but nothing to write home about. My favourite is still, by far, their curry. I'm not a real Thai food enthusiast per se, so I cannot comment on whether the food here is authentic or not. They do have a full bar so you can order drinks with your meal if you like. What i expected for a place called Canadian thai. The Pad Thai was basically half noodle half onion. I like onions but seriously why are there so many damn onions in it? My friend got the red curry chicken. The sauce had a decent flavor but the chicken breast they use is extremely questionable. It had the consistency of tapioca. It was chewy and rubbery. read more
