Found this little place in a Caribbean strip mall. This is not a sit down restaurant, but there are a few tables. Owners are super friendly, from Trinidad & Tobago. They've been open 6 months and the place is clean. Can't speak for the meat dishes, but the Vegetarian Roti is the BOMB: 2 layers of roti with dal in between, wrapped around a spinach curry & a pumpkin curry. I visited Hot On D spot for the first time this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. Located in a narrow strip mall {Are there any other kind in NJ?} this compact storefront roti shop is clean,bright with perhaps 3 tiny tables to accommodate those who can't wait to dive into their fresh, overstuffed rotis and excellent doubles. Their menu is equally compact offering just 4 choices ,Chicken,beef,shrimp and goat and 5 vegetarian along with Doubles, aloo pie and Pholouri. A small steam table set up was empty when I visited but the proprietress offered that they also serve Trini styled breakfast on week ends {Salt fish bujol} along with some lunch specials during the week. Now as for the roti, The skin was a bit thicker than I'm used to with not as much seasoned split peas filling but held up well on the drive home to the drier chicken curry and potato filling, which was excellent. I asked for pepper in 2 of the rotis but could not for the life of me taste any heat... Oh well I've come across this before from shop owners not wanting to over do the pepper sauce when preparing a predominately West Indian dish ordered by a middle aged white guy. The doubles was chewy and savory just the way it should be but I longed for a stronger kick a bit of mango kacheula would have given it but that's only my preference I was a little disappointed that the Peardrax was out of stock but several Solo Apple J's made for an excellent accompaniment. Their prices are a bit steep $6.75 for a chicken roti,$7.50 for boneless. but with no other game in town they can get it all day. An excellent find and definitely worth revisiting. read more

Five stars based on food and service. This is a foodie's kind of place that emphasize good, hearty food over pomp and circumstance. No professional chef in the back formulating new dishes and decorating the plate for eye-candy. This is great hole-in-the-wall strip mall dining. Forget atmosphere and decor, they don't make food taste better. You place your order, you come pick up your food at the counter. The gentleman behind the counter can give order suggestions. Absolutely delicious... I didn't expect to be wowed by the roti, however when I tasted it I felt like I was back home in Trini. The roti was delicious with just the right amount of heat and chickpeas in the middle layer. The doubles was amazing... The only regret I had was that I didn't buy more. My aunt Rita would be proud. I was looking for a place that sells Doubles closer to my home. I usually only get Doubles when I'm in NYC because I can't find a good one locally. The Doubles at this place taste like they came off the street cart in Trinidad. Sooooo flavorful and the dough was perfect. The hot stuff was the best I've had in a long time. I ate one in the car and then went back in to buy 4 more (for a total of 7). Ok...I know you're thinking...7...that's a might much. The other ones were for my daughter. They had a great Yelp rating, so I thought I'd give this place a try. It was near to my hotel, and open for a late lunch. Roy, the owner, was working the counter. Having never had Trinidadian food, before, he suggested a shrimp roti with potato. The roti is basically a flour tortilla, but BIG, and cooked on a griddle. it was then stuffed with shrimp, potato, and a curry sauce, and folded into a pocket that's eaten with the hands, much like a burger. But this was fabulous. I thoroughly enjoyed this place, and the friendly and helpful owner was an added bonus. If you want something a little different, give this place a try! read more

In the Trenton area for work and recalled I bookmarked this place- so glad I stopped. Clerk was super nice, the place was small but clean and my food came out fairly quickly. My plan was to eat my two rotis and two doubles when I got home but the intoxicating smell made me eat both doubles on the turnpike. We love this place. The spinach and pumpkin roti and the doubles are amazing. The pelau (rice, peas and chicken) is the greatest rice dish we've ever had anywhere. Goat is also excellent. Meat is generally on the bone so keep that in mind. Also, a little hot sauce goes a long way. read more

Mm, yummy. I never had Trinidadian (sp?) food before, but we got two roti's--shrimp and chicken. They were delicious: tasted very fresh and even the shrimp didn't taste over-cooked. We got lucky because we were the only folks there and we got one of the three tables, but you gotta be careful. Also, the dude at the cash register, the owner I'm guessing, is very cool, very accommodating and very helpful when explaining things. They even have homemade drinks (on the bottom shelf of the fridge), which were very yummy. read more

The bake was vegetables and fish inside what can only be described as light, fluffy, very addictive bread. I could just sit here and eat another and another.
