I've had great experiences at Hot Pot City! The food is delicious and the variety is amazing! They have a large buffet of hot pot items including seafood (shrimp, mussels, oysters, variety of fish, squid, crab), tofu and bean curd, so many fresh vegetables, udon, ramen, wontons, dumplings, meatballs, fish balls, quail and regular eggs, the list goes on and on! They have some cooked items on the buffet including fried rice, egg rolls, crawfish (seasonal), fried chicken, French fries, and more. The sauce bar was also extensive and included too! I liked that they had fried garlic and fried onion. They also include fresh fruit, a variety of Vietnamese che, and ice cream (green tea, red bean, cookies and cream, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate) in the buffet. There's six soup bases to choose from, and you can choose whether you want the table to share one large pot with up to two flavors or if you want to do individual hot pot at no extra cost. I loved that they had both options. My favorite broth was probably the tom yum - super savory with great flavor. The staff is very friendly and check on you often without being intrusive, and they bring the meats you order quickly. They also refill your drinks proactively which I appreciate. The restaurant is large and could easily accommodate big parties. The restaurant area, buffet area, and the bathrooms were all really clean. The music wasn't super loud, making it easy to talk. I received a message from the biz owner asking me to try Hot Pot City again. Few weeks ago, I just so happened to be in the Viet Hoa Center hungry. Since my previous experience was over 8 years ago, I decided to give it an update. I walked in and searched for somebody to hopefully give me instruction on how to order or start but couldn't see anyone. Then, I looked over the high counter to find an employee buried his face on his phone. I guess he was so involved with his stock market trading, he didn't notice my presence. He guided me to the first table by the door. He must know that I was very hungry. I had to squeeze between the table and the booth. Not sure why it's so tight. I am not a big guy either. I ordered chicken and lamb to start my meat crave and Chinese herbal soup. He brought me a tray of some kind of beef and a tray of lamb. I didn't challenge him because I was hungry. Then, I ordered chicken from a lady. It took a little while and I almost told her forget it. The meat was very lean and kind of thick. Not easily seasoned with the sauces there. I actually ate more fish than any other protein. The catfish fillets were pretty fresh. Except, I don't like to watch flies crawling on my mussels. Not sure why health department has not come here yet. There are fly traps hanging above the seafood and dessert aisle. I also spotted some mosquitos or gnats flying around the sauces. They know people order a lot of food for hotpot and had a double decker to make room. I like their thinking. The hotpot is good but I think their chicken wings were good. I tried so hard to not eat as many as I should because I wanted to make room for the hot pot. It's very busy during meal times. It's good that it's a spacious place for a wheelchair. If zero stars was possible. We came as a party 9 and they offered us 1) a round table with 3 pots, 2) 2 tables of 6 with 4 pots. When we arrived, we saw tables of 8 with 2 pots where we could've sat. We asked if we could sit there. The server said "you can ask my manager?" And pointed where the manager was posted up against the wall. The server waited for us to move to get the manager and when we didn't, we asked if he could get the manager, he reluctantly walked to the manager, asked our question then came back and said "she said no". Give this place a chance!! Our go to AYCE hot pot joint is shabu zone but they've recently raised their prices.. I heard about Hot Pot City on Instagram and instantly came to check it out. Staff is super friendly and we got seated right away. They are new only from 1-2 months since opening so perhaps not a lot of people know about this place yet because there wasn't a lot of people. But that was great for us because that meant no wait time and I could go get my food quickly. It's very clean, the stations are clean, and the raw meats/vegetables are fresh. The shrimp is HUGE! They also have a dessert station along with a cooked meats section- The wings were very good! The only thing I didn't like as much was the hotpot is shared. It's not individual hot pots. You share with the table. But they do they split hot pot bowls where you can get two different soups. I'm going to tell all my friends about this place! It's $20pp here for lunch. Found this gem that met everything I was looking for in All you can eat place. They have all you can eat made to order bbq skewers, fried wings that were crispy and juicy, and hot pot dishes with many varieties. Did I say the price also included the fountain drink that tasted normal! Not weird soapy taste nor water down. I'm especially impressed by their service. We came with two toddlers, they offered additional hotpot for the kids to share without charging us. We were so full and still could not pass on their delicious ice creams! Highly recommend! Ate here for a birthday party and the food was alright. The all you can eat style dining was nice, the noodles were good, lots of greens, and good seafood. However, when it came to ordering meat, the meat looked oxidized like it had been sitting for a while and overall felt poor quality. The meat has little to no marbling but was edible. If you are big on meat I would not recommend coming here but if you like seafood this is the place for you. The waiters were nice, they were always walking around cleaning up our table throughout our dining experience. The restaurant was nice, I liked their decoration and how spacious everything else. Hot Pot City is located right at the beginning of the plaza containing Viet Hoa International Foods, which is how we found out about it. We were grocery shopping one time and thought, "We should try that place some day!" Houston's hot pot scene eclectic in the sense that each restaurant has something different or unique about it. I think Hot Pot City's style fits the mold for some customers. For us, it's not as ideal. One, the concept is not all-you-can-eat ... which is fine if you don't want to feel pressured to stuff yourself so full until you're about to explode. However, our bill for two people ended up being more than if we went to an AYCE place. But what's nice is that it leaves you the option to take food home if you don't finish. Two, I wasn't too impressed with the taste of meats. I got the Beef Ribeye Steak and my bf opted for the Assorted Meat Platter (a good choice if you want to try a variety). We both thought it was okay -- not terrible, but nothing that blew our minds out of this world. I will say their thin Canadian Egg Noodles were delicious. As far as broths, our server explained that the Thai Suki and Vietnamese are best if you are big into seafood. The Mongolian is more of a beef-based broth (Very tasty and a good choice, if you're going the non-seafood route). The Japanese Shabu and Healthy Chinese Herbal are on the lighter side. With sauces, I was hoping there would be a soy sauce or shoyu-based option for our meats. But there wasn't. We did sesame sauce for vegetables and ordered one of each for the rest of the sauces. They're only $0.50 each, so it was worth a try. Thai Chili is sweet, Garlic Sesame Oil is exactly what it sounds like, Sha Cha is pasty, and Sa Te is your chili oil sauce. Our server, Tran Hong Anh (the name on our receipt) was super helpful in explaining their menu and concept to us. She was very attentive and patient during our first experience here. My only complaint is the staff didn't bring two items that we marked down on our order sheet. But we didn't say anything, because we ended up with enough food anyways to get us full. Would I come back here? Sure, if a friend wanted to try it. Would I go out of my way to seek it out again? Probably not. read more

We came in for dinner during the weekday. We were seated immediately and our server, Ethan was extremely polite and helpful to us. He explained exactly how to order and what was included in each option thoroughly. There was no surprises or extra charges later. The place itself was spacious, clean, and beautiful. The layout of the tables and booths were well thought out. Our family had enough space for the five of us in our booth with two burners ready on the table, albeit we only needed one. We are two adults and three children, ages 12, 7, and 4 so we ordered the Surf & Turf. This option was great because it included cuts like ribeye, lamb, chicken, and seafood. Really, it was a great way to have everything you need. The only thing we added was beef tendon and an extra noodle add on. Vegetables such as Napa cabbage, bok choy, pumpkin, and daikon are our favorites so they were great compliments. Our choice of broth was Thai Suki and Japanese Shabu. We loved having the choice of something spicy for ourselves and something mild for our younger ones. Both soups were delicious and flavored perfectly. I loved being able to head to a hot pot and not worry about having to add soy sauce or fish sauce to my broth while I'm eating. If I wanted to do that, I'd just stay home and cook myself. Being able to just add the protein and vegetables as I eat saved a lot of time that I used to enjoy myself. Service was amazing, not just from our own server but from all the staff. Me and a friend decided we wanted to eat Chinese so we decided to come back to this place because it used to be open before but it looks like it's ran by some new folks and it looks really great and interesting. We got excited by the advertisement that someone else posted for $19 a person for lunch, but as we went in, the ladies that greeted us told us oh no that picture that's on there is too old. I understand that they also have a posting for $30 a person but $19 seem to be about the right price for lunchtime. We understand it's the weekend but come on. We just thought $30 Bucs A person was too steep even for dinner. Can't believe I haven't reviewed Hot Pot city yet, considering how frequently I eat here. During this visit, we ordered half/half of Mongolian and Thai broths. The Thai broth was amazing as usual, being sour and spicy, whereas the Mongolian was a little bland. The meats and vegetables were fresh as always. And we always have oranges for dessert! For a party of 3, we picked 2 sides of veggies, 1 portion of scallops, 1 mixed fish balls, 1 portion of beef, 1 lamb, and 1 Canadian egg noodles. The portions are generous so we didn't even finish the hotpot. Another plus is that they provide to-go containers for your leftovers. The chicken wings and beef skewers are quite tasty as well. With Houston's warm weather nearly all year round, and hotpot being a tradition for cold, winter season, there is definitely a lack of hotpot restaurants in the city. You can say the hotpot scene in H-town is pretty much dominated by Little Sheep Mongolian Hotpot. And if you compare the two side by side, Hot Pot City doesn't fare so well in my opinion. The only positive feature I found in Hot Pot City was that they had more than two flavors of soup to choose from. However, it was a bummer that the soup lacked the authentic flavors. Although they had a decent, but not large, selection of veggies and meats, the freshness and quality of these items were just not up to par. The meats were not very fatty and could be sliced thinner. The cabbage was flimsy and looked a bit withered. The seafood was far from what you call fresh. For less than half the price, I could probably get much better ingredients and throw my own grand hotpot meal at home. #190 read more

If it is your first time going, ask a lot about the flavor of the broth. Don't go there with less than 3 people. I went with just my husband and me and there was a lot of food leftover because we couldn't finish it all. Overall the place wasn't bad, but average. The service was pretty absent, the waitress came to take our sheet, give us our cups of water, then that was it. They didn't come back to the table at all besides giving us the food. No refills. For the menus, it was pretty self explanatory, just wish there was pictures so I could see the portion sizes. And for the broths it doesn't explain the flavor at all. Just the names. Not like "beef" or "chicken", just "Mongolian" or "Vietnamese" or "Thai". I ordered the Mongolian and it had a ton of chili, green onion, cloves, ginger, and garlic in it that I had to spoon out before I tried it. Also, they were playing a horror movie on the TV's with a lot of blood(a demon possessed girl licked a box cutter knife in the movie) and gore on the SYFY channel. Hot Pot City is a great value and perfect for groups! When you're seated, you get a paper menu and peanuts and sweet pickled vegetables to snack on. For one hotpot, you choose a type first. The type is what protein you want. They have seafood, meat lovers, surf and turf (combo of meat and seafood), tofu and mushroom, and a few others. Then you get to choose up to two broth flavors. There's Mongolian, Thai, Japanese shabu, Chinese herbal, and Vietnamese lau. My family loves the Mongolian and I love the Thai base. You can request a vegetarian broth as well. Then you choose a level of spiciness. All hot pots come with veggies and a little bit of bean thread noodles. Add ons: always order the thin Canadian noodles, this is a staple for most tables! Appetizers/others: they offer wings, beer, and crawfish, etc. Tip: ask for scissors to cut up the veggies!!! All of the employees were wearing masks and there is plenty of space and tables. This is a great place to eat a healthy and hearty meal full of fresh nutritious vegetables! i'm usually a shabu shabu person, so i'm used to having more of that flavor profile for the sauces. there aren't really any sweet soy sauce kind of options here, which makes me sad. we ordered the ribeye, shrimp, tofu, fried fish cakes, and more seafood options they let you order half portions for any of these. we liked their egg noodles the most. their udon noodles were meh: wings were also meh. it wasn't that busy when we went but it was difficult getting their attention again after our initial order. the ambiance was very calming compared to the ayce options like shabu zone. read more

Here is my review after coming here twice. I've tried their Mongolian & Shabu broths. Both are good. Shabu is more plain. I selected it so my younger kids can eat it. There is a lot of variety of foods here, which is good. My kids love the Cajun Fries (although pricey). We liked the meats the first time we came. We did not like it the second time. The second time the meats were cut thicker, seemed lower quality and overall just didn't taste as good. I liked their vegetables platter. The vegetables were fresh and had a good assortment. I did not like that they charge for sauces that are typically included with meals at other restaurants, such as fish sauce, Thai chili peppers and chili sate sauce. Also, they don't have the yellow ramen noodles as an option. Overall, it's an OK place for hot pot but not the best. read more
