WARNING: I ordered the Tom Yum broth and it had mussels and squid at the bottom when it arrived. If you're allergic to seafood, please be wary of this place. Major contamination issues here. Overall, we had a below average experience but couldn't really find a broth that we really liked. The service wasn't very welcoming, and didn't take any time to explain how anything worked. I remember when it first opened a few years ago and coming back here after another business trip makes this place like a second home. We went for the AYCE hotpot and loved that the ordering is done thru the IPAD and the service was super attentive that we got all the foods and broth in less than 4-5 minutes. Now that's really something !!! The meat quality is so filling that I had to order two more platters and load up more on the different veggie/seafood sides. The cleanliness is immaculate and definitely like the open space to eat the hotpot. There was no heavy stench whenever eating hotpot so thank goodness my jacket still smell normal. Note; they don't have the regular ponzu or yuzu sauce so got to make do with black vinegar instead. Plus their dessert jello is so delicious it reminds me of back home that I went for more. We had been to a place further down Route 40 that gets rave reviews and we were NOT impressed with them! You can find that review in my Yelp if you are interested. Because of that, I was very apprehensive about trying Hot Pot Hero. Turns out we probably should have come here first rather than going to the other place. We were shown very quickly to a table. This restaurant has a very cool vibe which we were definitely feeling! We were handed a iPad to order what we wanted. While the prices are a little higher on the all you can eat, we got a nice amount upon ordering, where in comparison, the place we had went to previously on 40 gave us a third of what we got at Hot Pot Hero for four people!! We ordered two of the spicier broths....when we go again, it will be one hot and one mild, if for no other reason, a break for the tastebuds! :) Even if you like hot, these are SPICY, so just know that going in. We ordered beef, chicken and pork belly along with an array of veggies to include King Trumpet Mushrooms. We got a lovely amount on the first round and when we ordered a few more things on the second, it was just as nice! Unfortunately, the next morning my husband discovered his credit card had been used to purchase $10,000 in Taylor Swift tickets. Yes, ten thousand dollars. We're all for "All Too Well," but not at that price. We're not saying it was definitely connected to the restaurant, but it was the only place he used the card that day. There are so many hotpot restaurants in the DMV area, it can be difficult to choose when comes to which one is good and where to go. For us, there are certain criteria we look for when come to a hot pot restaurant. And here is why hot pot hero is one of our favorites. Meat: the most important. Beef and Lamb mainly. Thin, fresh, flavorful in a way you can eat it right after cook it even without any dipping sauce. Seafood: fresh, with decent variety. Veggies and others : they have to have the signature vegetables, mushrooms, variety of fish, and meatballs, corn, taro, quilt eggs, tribe, etc. Service: they don't need to be super attentive in a hotpot restaurant, because most the time when people go to a hot pot restaurant, they want to communicate and have a good time with the people they went with. It's completely different than if you go to a steakhouse. So the best is to leave these customers alone and only comes around when they need something. Cleanliness: eating hot pot can be messy, with sauce drizzled all over the table and seats, splatters come from the pots. Therefore a thorough cleaning after each customer is essential to keep a hot pot restaurant clean so the next customer can enjoy. My friend and I came here for dinner and chose the AYCE. We chose to share the Yin Yang pot and got the House Herbal Pot and Assorted Mushroom Pot. They have a tablet for you to order everything from which is super convenient as your order gets sent directly to the kitchen to get the items ready to be brought out. It took some time getting used to cooking everything in the pots and making sure to get them out in time and still eat. A lot of multi tasking going on but so worth it as everything was so tasty. There's a sauce station which you can mix different sauce flavors to dip your food in. The staff was attentive at taking away the empty dishes and bringing out new ones as we ordered. Our soup base was herbal and spicy broths. It took just a few minutes for them to start boiling so started putting pork bellies, brisket slices, shrimp, clams and all kinds of veggies in. My favorites are the pork bellies, glass noodles, bokchoy, pumpkin and mushrooms. Delicious. It is a buffet price but was a bit pricey I thought. As an Urban HotPot stan, I had to diversify my AYCE hotpot experiences in the area, so this was next on my list! Visited on a weekend around lunchtime and got seated right away. The decorations are very nice and give a modern Chinese vibe that makes it feel fancier. The vibe here felt more chill than urban hot pot for some reason. For two people, we got a Yin and Yang pot with mushroom and tomato soup bases. You get one big pot, so they're not individualized. They have a sauce bar that included some types of sauces I don't see at other places (and sesame oil comes in a cute little can!) You place your order on an iPad and the order comes out relatively quickly. The meat portions are pretty good but not excessive. I got the mushroom broth because I like trying vegan options and it was pretty good. My partner got the tomato broth and I was initially weary since I don't love tomato based soups but it was surprisingly savory and flavorful (and makes it more visually appealing too!) They are pretty good at clearing up your finished plates and refilling water. There's also disposable chopsticks at your disposal (lol) so you don't need to ask someone if you drop yours or need more for meats vs veggies. For dessert, they have a station where you can build your own. It included things like lychee jelly, grapes, lychee, brown sugar, and aiyu jelly. It doesn't quite hit the same as a coconut sago, but it was a refreshing ending to hotpot. read more

There was a large bowl with two sections over a burner for the broth, so two flavors could be ordered. There were less protein choices, but more veggie choices, and the food was very fresh. The service was very good. I didn't check out the buffet, but the family did bring fruit for dessert. The decorations were fun to look at, abstract paintings of superheroes. There were also a lot of TVs, and we were seated in front of one playing a cartoon series that appealed to my granddaughter. I would come here again when I'm in the area. read more

After some hiccups and explaining that no one was cooking for themselves, the night was "the best night this family has had in a long time" as my sister said. All you can eat hot pot, with a make your own sauce station! You order via tablet and I think you get about 90 minutes to eat and order as much as you want. We came here for dinner on a weekday around 8pm and there was no line. I think it is about $36/person? But don't quote me on that, either way it was a good deal. We had a toddler with us and they did not count him on our tab. Despite what the tablet says, you cannot pay on it, you just have to wave an employee down. The only thing is, I wish they would hire more employees because there were only two waitresses for the entire restaurant that night! read more

Me and my food buddy went here yesterday, it was a nice quiet Sunday afternoon. Just how i like it. It wasn't too crazy busy since thats the afternoon lull. To me, it's more like 3.5 stars. This place has nice hot pot and service. We went for Sunday lunch, with a group of five, and got different small pots: spicy, mushrooms, tomatoe soups. All the soups are flavorful ingredients are fresh; we got a bit of everything: beef, pork, pork kidneys, duck blood, tofu, shrimp paste, quail eggs, vegetables, and noodles. Everything tasted good. We liked the sauce bar, and the service was nice. However for the price including tip is about $55 a person. This is pricey and not a good value compared to other hot pot places in the area. I think they should either lower the price, or offer more items included in the price, such as fried chicken wings, appetizers, and dessert. Since there are other places with lower price points in the area, some even with hot pot and BBQ combos and included dessert; I'm unlikely to return to this restaurant. read more

They serve all portions in small so we had to order double of everything. We ordered rice three times but never received it. Staff was friendly but the food/value /quality was lacking. The quality is always amazing here. I've come quite a few times and have brought many of my friends, most saying it's the best hot pot in Maryland. I'm originally from LA where there are a plethora of hot pot restaurants, and I would say this is on par with some of my go to places back home. The broth is soooo hearty and delicious! While I and most of my friends prefer either of the spicy broths, I also enjoy the tomato broth a lot. Everything always looks and tastes fresh. Service is always fast. You don't wait for anything for too long here (except maybe to get seated during busy times). You can ask for a table with an individual or shared pot. There are limited tables with individual pots, but you can split a shared pot two or three ways and treat it as an individual pot. Decent workaround for allergies. Casual atmosphere, great for a small-medium sized hangout. Parking is easy in a big shared lot. Would absolutely recommend anybody come here! read more

Hit this spot on a Saturday, it was a 40 min wait. Faster than the Urban hot pot tonight so we stopped by. It was packed! Smelled really good. We sat in the car and waited to be called. Once we did we sat down and were given the menus. There wasn't really any explanation etc how of everything works. We didn't even know our waitresses name. We ordered the yin yang pot of pork and mushroom broth. The sauce choices and extras are less than other places. Lots of things to choose from though to out in your pot. The broth was okay. Eating the broths with the noodles after everything had been cooked in it (and adding some magic from the sauce bar) was a real treat! This was my first experience of hotpot, and it will not be my last. Would highly recommend the spicy Hero Pot broth (spicy) and the House Tomato broth (not spicy). Tomato broth has tomatoes and celery that will cook into a very tasty soup as you eat the hotpot, and every bite will be so juicy with tomato soup! My favourite sauce dish recipe: 5 parts sesame paste, 1 part chilli pepper oil, a dash of garlic, and garnish of cilantro They also have a sauce bar with recipes and many options to create your own flavouring sauce for your food: soy sauce, red chilli sauce, garlic, scallions, hoisin sauce, ginger, sesame oil and many more. It all depends on what you like. Pro Tip: Hot pot is known to be a wee bit messy and it does leave some smell on your hair [those with long hair ] - you're basically sitting in front of a very flavorful boiling soup for one hour so it's bound to get on you. So don't wear your best expensive outfit, wear a hat (or prepare a hair mist/body mist) if that bothers you, and even plan for a shower after. COVID-19 precautions: limited seating, body temperature check before admittance, staff wearing gloves and masks at all times, witnessed sanitation of tables and chairs between customers. Service was quite friendly and attentive. Food was amazing overall and portion size was generous for the price. There were some minor issues though. First one round of meat was not thawed properly so it came in a big chunk of frozen slices of beef. After a while it was alright. Second, the condiments stand was still openly self-served, which might be a bit worrysome for sanitation purposes. They offer seafood boils as well. My mom came into town from CA and she fell in love with this place also. You have the choice of doing individual pots or sharing a large one and splitting it into two. We usually order the mushroom soup base (medium spice) and the seafood soup base. We order all types of meats, seafood, veggies, and frequent the sauce bar towards the back. Be sure to look at the premium meats section which is included in price. We like this specific hot pot place because everything is delicious. Plus they serve alcohol like beer and soju. My husband and I come here about once every other week.
