Out of impulse, decided to try out one of their omakase offerings. I really appreciate that they offer more "affordable" options compared to other omakase places. They had a number of options to pick from around the mid 50s price range. It took about 15-20 minutes to put together and everything was beautifully presented and tasty. I can't speak on how it compares to other omakase experiences because this was my first time trying, but the price point for me was the biggest draw in trying it out and was very content. read more

Visited Umi Sushi on a Saturday night around 8:00 PM -- full house and no reservation, but thankfully we only had about a 10-minute wait. The back patio is definitely where you want to be on a warm evening. The overhead string lights created a great atmosphere, and the staff were both pleasant and efficient throughout the night. We had an unexpected guest join us mid-meal, and our waitress immediately accommodated us with a table change without missing a beat. It's impressive how quickly they're able to turn tables while still keeping service smooth. The sushi presentation was very nice, and they offer a great selection of rolls. While everything we ordered was good, several of the rolls ended up tasting fairly similar - all specials I believe. If possible, request seating toward the very back of the patio -- it's closest to the Patapsco River and makes for a really relaxing setting. read more

Dined here recently for a family birthday dinner. What a delicious sushi experience in historic Ellicott City! The sushi was fresh and delicious. The presentation went above and beyond, with a colorful feast for the eyes and small touches like flakes of real wasabi root on the sashimi. The place is a hidden gem in Old Town Ellicott City. The staff was very nice and GORGEOUS. The ambiance was perfect as they offered inside and outside seating. The sushi was amazing and fresh. The steam bun was delicious but was not fully heated as the middle was still cold. They had ice cold beers and were very attentive after the entrees were served. I've been here a couple times and am NEVER disappointed. If you want fresh sushi at an affordable price, this is the place to come! I've both eaten in the restaurant and picked up food and both are great. Inside is pretty small but very cozy. Parking isn't great, which is pretty normal for Old Ellicott City, but when I picked up food, I had to park about a quarter mile away and walk up the street to Umi. This time, I ordered their real crabmeat rangoons, spicy salmon crunch roll, and the honeymoon special roll. Everything was fresh and delicious, but my favorite was the honeymoon roll! Here for lunch with my grown daughter and son. Never been here or this part of the city for that matter. It's on Main Street which is the older part of town, small but nice decor. They have a monster sushi menu. You will find it's hard to decide what to start with. I picked the Crab Rangoon the boss got the pork buns. Rangoon was small but tasty, not 10 bucks tasty but good raggoon. The pork buns were huge with a nice ground pork. Service was excellent. Parking was iffy but it was Easter so that may have had an impact one way or another. I had a good little walk to my car. read more

I am really picky about sushi, and this place has never once triggered any "ick." I have been several times. The fish is always of immaculate quality and very fresh. The presentation is good. I got their sushi boat for my birthday, and I don't remember which one I picked, but they have a bunch of boat options and they are all LARGE. Extensive menu of sushi rolls. Pretty solid selection of other things like sashimi/nigiri. They also have fun cocktails. The servers are always polite and reliable. Never had any issues with food taking forever or receiving the wrong dish. My only complaint is that this place gets BUSY!!!! Which isn't even a knock against the restaurant, so they still get 5 stars. But absolutely make a reservation and don't just show up. There is typically a 30+ minute wait on any night they're open, especially warmer days when people like to walk around OEC. read more

This restaurant is AWESOME! I'm not a huge sushi person but my boyfriend is and he loved the sushi. The vibe here gives you a little bit of everything. You can have an intimate dinner for two, you can bring all the girls for a night out, or you can chill at the bar solo and do your thing. Our waitress was on point. She walked us through the menu which helped with making our final dinner selection. My noodle dish was so good! I had plenty to take home for the next day. We stopped by for lunch and were immediately impressed by the welcoming vibe and the surprisingly large variety of vegan and vegetarian options. The Food: 4/5 Overall, the food was great. We started with the vegetable gyoza, which was perfectly light with an excellent dipping sauce, alongside an amazing appetizer salad topped with a vibrant, flavorful ginger dressing. The edamame (served in a cute little bamboo basket!) could have used a bit more salt, and the Garlic Chili Tofu was just okay as the flavors could have been a little more balanced. However, the mains completely delivered! The vegetarian Udon Yakisoba was absolutely delicious. It featured thick, satisfying noodles with a mild but perfectly balanced seasoning that went incredibly well with the fresh mushrooms, bok choy, onions, carrots, and broccoli. The real standout, though, was the chef's special "Secret Garden" sushi roll. It was beautifully presented and it was my first time having a sushi roll wrapped in a pink tofu paper instead of seaweed--such a unique and tasty touch! (Note: We came for lunch, so we skipped the drinks this time around!) The Setting: 4/5 The interior is beautifully decorated with great Japan-themed pieces, including a lovely wall display featuring katanas and traditional vases. I visited for the first time about a week ago and had a very pleasant experience! All of the fish that we had tasted very fresh I had a salmon poke bowl and my partner had gotten a specialty roll. It was our first time and they gave us free, miso soup and salad as aside for our entrées and offered free cheesecake at the end of the meal. Service was quick and we didn't have a wait at all on a Saturday afternoon. Ambience is casual and definitely good for a friend outings or family gatherings. Our friends that came with us got fried rice and it was literally the biggest plate of fried rice I've seen in a very long time! Was here for a private event and they really delivered on the food and drinks! We had their hot and cold sake, both of which tasted like high quality sake. Our table ordered the Snow White and the Purple Rain cocktails, and they were well received. The cocktails were just a nice balance of sweet and strong, but not overpoweringly so. I've been here 3 times and every time the food and service are great! The restaurant is clean with lots of seating, we were seated right away on a Friday night around 7 pm. This time we ordered the Japanese madai appetizer, 2 salmon avocado handrolls, 2 sweet shrimp sushi, and the UMI A La Carte Tray/boat. We asked for no scallop, uni, or tamago and they were able to accommodate. The fish tasted fresh and the presentation was very nice. I didn't realize the boat would come with dry ice smoke so that was a cool surprise - the server asked if I wanted to take a video before. This was a good amount of food for 2 hungry people. Some FRESH sushi. I haven't had such clean tasting uni ever, it was so smooth and sweet. My fiance and I stopped by today(Sunday), and it was not super busy. Also in the sashimi bowl was real wasabi and it was very good. Everything on the platter was super fresh, my favorites were the fatty tuna and the uni. I had the rainbow sushi (crabmeat, avocado, salmon, tuna, yellow tail and white tuna); my husband had one with eel, shrimp, egg, crabmeat, etc., (called the Captain). This was a super cute and cozy spot on Main Street in ellicott city with friendly and attentive staff that i enjoyed for date night, cocktails with my girlfriends, and takeout on different occasions. They aren't super spacious inside so they may not be best ideal for large groups or children but they are clean inside with fresh and creative sushi rolls. I love the avocado bomb, Baltimore roll, holiday roll and their Naruto. They're reasonably priced with pretty good cocktails too. This was in historic Ellicott City and it was so pretty inside and in the warmer months they have a patio for you to sit enjoy. I think they also have bands then too. The service was great and the food came fairly quickly. The miso soup and salad was a great starter and the sushi only got better from there. The sushi was delicious, flavorful and super filling. Tucked away in Old Ellicott City, this Main Street spot is serving up an impressive variety of inventive bites. Ordering takeout was a breeze and my order was ready as scheduled. The staff was warm and welcoming, and even sent me home with a thoughtful holiday gift, tucked into my takeout bag. I was truly spoiled for choices when it came to vegetarian roll options. I always appreciate when there are more creative options beyond the usual avocado roll, etc. for vegetarians. Great service, Great selections , Great Sushi. Hubby and I went on an impromptu date night. I was craving sushi so we found this beautiful gem in downtown Ellicott City. A cozy place with dim lighting kind of romantic if you ask me . My husband and I ordered the same roll and honestly we could have shared one. It was the Scallops Dynamite Roll and it was amazing. Decent sushi spot in Ellicott City. I really loved the presentation of the various Sushi dishes (granted I got the Hibachi salmon) but you could tell that thought and creativity went into their food. Took a friend here for their birthday and their enjoyed the Chef's sushi option, stating the fish tasted very fresh and delicious. The Hibachi salmon was delicious and generous in side but the fried rice left a bit to be desired. There was even a birthday dessert that was brought out and the entire restaurant sang, prompted by our waiter. I wouldn't compare it to any serious omakase restaurants but Umi still offers a high quality sushi at a reasonable price at around $50 a person. Umi has a wide range of food from typical rolls to high quality fish from Japan. I order mainly one thing from the menu, the omakase for two which ends up being around $100 after tax and tip. There aren't any decent sushi restaurants in Maryland that serve this quality fish. The staff is actually friendly. The inside of the restaurant is actually quite large with the new expansion. I highly recommend that you go dine at the patio when it's nice out. The patio area is pretty awesome with the adjacent trees and creek. I am just glad there is at least one good sushi place in Ellicott City. This is the best sushi spot no doubt. read more
