11/3/21 Haven't been here in awhile. My husband and I ordered the wonton soup, egg rolls, chicken lo mein, and General Tso's Chicken. The food was more delicious than I remember and they give generous portions. The prices are cheaper than other local Chinese restaurants, but I think that's because they only do carryout, no dine-in. Only feedback I had is that the General Tso's Chicken was on the sweeter side and it wasn't spicy throughout as it generally is supposed to be without eating the pepper. I like sweet and don't like spicy so it worked out perfectly for me. Although I accidentally ate a pepper so I had to put the fire out in my mouth by drinking a glass of milk. Lol They are currently disinfecting their pens by separating them with used and unused containers which I appreciate. Gift cards are available. Service was friendly and my food was ready upon arrival. We had enough leftovers to make a second meal for lunch. We will definitely add them to our rotation for Chinese cuisine. read more

Food is good but order online with caution. I showed up to pick up an order placed and paid for online which apparently never made it to the restaurant. Despite having the confirmation, the restaurant would not honor the order. I had to pay yet again and they called their vendor to ask for a refund. Before I left I was told if I had no refund within a week they would refund me themselves. Over a week later and still no refund. When I returned they pushed me off to deal with their vendor rather than honoring their commitment to me. Their vendor should not be the customer's problem. read more

We decided to get carryout from this place. Our first time even though apparently this shop has been around for years! My guy liked his Shrimp and broccoli which we ordered spicy but not so much. I got the double cooked pork which was very good but could had been hot-spicier. Maybe when we go back they can adjust the heat. OK so this isn't the first time we have seen this place be really dirty. We have caught them handling food with bare hands after coughing and touching other things in the restaurant. My family stopped going here for exactly that reason. Well today I had to run into the store next door and decided to try to grab a quick lunch for my husband.ONCE AGAIN, the cook behind the counter was touching everything and then sticking his hands in raw food. I really wish the health department would check on this place a little more often. This is the last time I'll be ordering from here. I was pleasantly surprised with the food I got from here. I ordered in advance (take out) and when I pulled in, I was immediately skeptical of the place. Large windows looked into... well, not the most appealing looking chinese place. Faded menus hung above a rather bare bones counter. Stepping inside however, I noticed that, despite being older, everything was really clean. The guy who grabbed my order (possibly a co-owner?) was really friendly. I recognized the company on his polo shirt (his day job) and was chatted about tech stuff for a minute while my card was processed. On the way out, I was told to have a nice day. It wasn't til I got home it processed how cheap the meal was. Two main dishes (one with shrimp) and two appetizers for 20-something bucks. While this wasn't life changing chinese food, it was a solid offering that keeps up with almost anything else in town. So, if you're looking for cheap take out chinese... but don't want "Cheap" chinese food, this is worth a try. Eat in is not an option. read more

Hunan Express is perhaps the most exemplary display of unfulfilled culinary potential, as a result it never fails to disappoint me. As a critic I always rate an establishment on the grounds of what it has to offer and the experience their service provided me. Hunan Express though it has the tools to succeed in either prospects utters fails at both. To being let's start with what it has to offer: The food here is one-dimensional, often offering nothing more than a single flavour profile. This problem is made even more apparent when considering the menu selection: it's almost entirely comprised of either overly salty or sweet dishes. This is most disappointing considering the distinct umami depictions many of these dishes are famous for particularly the Szechuan. The problems continue, I noted while looking at the menu the many of the dishes are outdone by other Chinese restaurants in the region, like Great Wall or Chopstixx. Unfortunately, with the lackluster food that means the place must rely solely on its convenience or value to justify itself, and it falls flat yet again. The food is not particularly cheap and it's not ready particularly fast. To the point where I would even recommend those living in the Rockburn/Lyndwood area to wait the extra minutes for Great Wall or Chopstixx delivery. While the establishment doesn't have much to offer to consumers, that doesn't necessarily make it bad just yet, it must be rated on customer experience as well. A restaurant with lackluster food can still get by with excellent service and considerate staff. Unfortunately for Hunan Express it has neither of those. The staff here is rude and condescending. They care little about the customer's perpective and treat them more like dollar signs that people. In my only two experiences here the cashier interrupted my phone calls, showed disdain for requesting chopsticks, pushed me to hurry up my order, and shoved the food across the counter. Spending any time here whatsoever makes It clear that from the owner perpective this establishment is more for serving them than it is for serving us. In conclusion, this establishment is a bumbling dumpster fire of untapped potential. The food is boring and exaggerated, almost like licking a heap of granulated salt or sugar; the presentation is akin to microwave meals being served in a humid 1970s motel room; the staff are insolent and bitter geriatrics brimming with preconceived opinions of you; and the entire place is monolithically outclassed by similar Chinese restaurants in the area. You'd think this place has a lot of the typical dishes you'd expect from a Chinese place but what really makes this place stand out is HOW they make their food. Many Chinese restaurants would usually get a bunch of prepackaged, pre-made foods from other states or sometimes even from different countries. Not this place. One time I came in to pick up some Spare Ribs and I saw them in the back marinading some of their meats and dipping other meats into batter. And I'm talking about real, raw meat being marinaded in their mystery sauce. I'm not saying that their battered meat dishes are exceptional, I'm just making it clear that they don't order pre-made, frozen dishes. Okay maybe they do but I'm positive they at least make their own meat dishes. If you buy General Tso Chicken, you can taste a slight difference in the dish compared to the typical Chinese carry out. As in, you'll taste and feel the fat in your mouth as you consume each piece. Now, it's all about preference and personally, I'm loving it. They have an extensive menu plus more options if you go inside. As you order and wait, you can actually see them cooking your food and putting in the spices, seasonings and other things as they move the wok like clockwork, slowly cooking your food as if they were cooking it themselves. Some of the dishes here DO taste like the usual, however, others taste pretty damn good. Like what you may ask? Pad Thai dishes are pretty good, not as much as the kind you get at a Thai restaurant but it's worth it. Some of their appetizers are on point too like their Chicken Wings and Spare Ribs. Mind you, the spare ribs are fatty. Their Mongolian beef, General Tso Chicken, Crispy beef and Moo Shu beef are all pretty good. Their Fried Rice and Lo Mein dishes are pretty greasy but that's what I like. I personally don't go here often so I don't know how good their dishes are now. We get takeout from here at least once every 2 weeks. They have big woks in the back where they cook the food, it's all made fresh and fast. We have never had a bad experience with the food or the service. It's usually ready within 15 minutes. We eaten food there for years and had a variety of food, cho cho beef, egg rolls, wonton soup, chicken chow mein, rainbow chicken (spicy), lemon chicken, chicken cashew...etc, etc...they have a huge menu. First time trying Hunan Express. I ordered hot and sour soup, wonton soup, cream cheese wontons, and honey sesame chicken. This is the only casual Chinese carry out I've ever to that did not have dinner combination platters. Both soups were almost inedible. The wonton broth was dark brown instead of the traditional yellow color and was very salty. The hot and sour was really just hot and no flavor. The cream cheese wontons were too much bread and overall dull. Not enough cherry sauce in the world to save em. The honey sesame chicken had mediocre flavor and the chicken was tough and stringy. The only positive of the night was that it was cheap and fast. I am hoping that I either ordered the wrong things or it was just an off night. I'll give Hunan Express one more shot before they get shunned. I'm hopeful they will rebound so I will not be missing China House in Canton, MD. read more

So its Christmas day and there are not .any choices. We yelped near our hotel and this Chinese place came up. It had 3.5 stars so beggars cant be choosers. If you have a choice keep going. Pork fried rice minus the pork, pork egg foo young minus the pork and lastly pork lo mein without...you guessed it pork. Noodles and a few veggies counted three strips of little pork. Sad. Add insult to injury it was tasteless. We had to drown it in soy sauce. The sweet and sour chicken was a massive doughy ball with a small tiny piece of chicken. That folks is a talent. We put in a large order and the lady asked ,how many plates? I said 8. She said astonished eight? Um there are eight of us? Would you like us to share plates so you can save a few pennies? Ordered general tso and veg lo mein. The general tso was 75% batter/fluff and 25% chicken. Terrible. Ordered white meat more expensive thinking it would be better quality. Sadly we threw out half of it. Some of the pieces weren't cooked properly as ypu could see pink in the meat once it separated from the batter. The veg lo mein was nothing to write home about.
