And then the more I thought on it a sandwich sounded better. But what kind of sandwich? There's a place up on North Oak called The Hot Rocks Pizza Kitchen, and I hade been there right after it opened. During that trip I had noticed several interesting sandwiches, so I thought that it would be a good time to return. So off I go and when I get there I marched right up to the bar and ordered a frosty glass of iced brown barley soup and a menu. After some serious study I decided on a The Meatball Grinder. I placed the order and sat back and relaxed, sipping on a delicious cold beer. And in just a short time they brought me out a basket full of heaven! They take a lovely roll of bread, split it down the middle, load that with four monster meatballs, add some pepperoni, Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms, and top it with red sauce a pizza cheese, and then toasted the whole kit and caboodle! When you bite into this beast you are biting into a meat lovers paradise! First, they are open on Sunday. Yelp says closed. I came with my 6 year old Grandbaby girl. We came to eat pizza but an 8" cheese was $11 and there isn't any pizza on the kids menu. I instead had a Pesto Turkey Bacon sandwich and it was average at best. They brought my granddaughter's Kid's Menu Penne Alfredo in a extremely hot bowl. Like Mexican restaurant wearing oven mitt hot!!! I didn't like that much. Why would you give a 6 year old a hot bowl to burn herself on? Server did great with what he was given though. Really wanted to give it 3 stars because of my first experience. (8 days ago) They had good customer service, the person answering the phone was knowledgeable of the menu & surprisingly timely, and the online information was accurate. This afternoon at about 2 o'clock I had ordered a personal cheese pizza ( an 8' ) and an order of nachos over the phone. When I arrived at the restaurant I wanted to add six cans of pop to my order but unfortunately the register system forced two separate transactions. I'm displeased with the look of the cheese pizza. -from the person who was going to eat it "where is the cheese and it does not look good." The first time I had ordered jalapeños or banana peppers, I did not mind the seeds left in the slices I figured simple mistake. Hey, so I'm a fan. I wasn't too sure after seeing the mixed reviews on here, but I was pleasantly surprised. And I'm super excited to have more casual pizza options in this part of the Northland. My favorite part was the sauce. Tons of flavor without being too sweet or too tangy. What you need to know about the crust is that it's thin, but still chewy. So you're not going to get that crispy cracker-type crust but neither is it a doughy-fluffy hand-tossed style. (I like both those types of crust; this isn't to say their crust is superior to those, merely to explain what it's like). Personally, I find it comparable to similar pizza places like Minskys, Sarpinos, and Stone Canyon. No, it's not gourmet pizza, but a good old classic pizza pie sometimes just hits the spot perfectly. read more

There's a weird mix of chicken thighs diced up fairly small and a fried breast also diced up really small. Potentially a reheated dish of pasta for carry out but I'm not sure. Garlic bread is WAY over seasoned with Italian seasoning. Got garlic cheese bread also. I don't think it was heated properly, cheese was just to the melting point but the garlic butter underneath still hadn't melted. I'm really hungry and debating if it's worth a roll of the dice risking food poisoning. My little man has already tapped out and is looking for bologna. Pretty sure a microwave is the head chef. There were people there to take my money and bring out a sack of food. Seemed under staffed but plenty of time for phones. Nobody was rude. The restaurant appeared to have a decent crowd of patrons. One of the best pizzas I've had in quite some time and a welcome addition to the northland where good quality pizza isn't an easy thing to come by. The crust was thin and crispy. The cheese was of good quality and had nice flavor. And the meat and sauce was also good. The customer service I received was also excellent. The only criticism I can come up with really is that the chairs absolutely suck. They're extremely uncomfortable. So you probably wouldn't want to visit for the purpose of sitting there for hours watching football games. Other than that I loved the place and will be looking forward to visiting again sometime soon! read more

My workplace has a monthly meeting for all staff and we ALLWAYS have pizza. In the last 8 years that I have been there we have alternated between Minsky's one month, then another place for the following month. My unofficial count tallies about 16 different pizza places we have ordered from in the northland. Today we did carry out from Hot Rocks with 8 large specialty pizzas for 20 people. We ordered 7 different styles and I sampled the breakfast pizza and the Hawaiian. I was excited to try the breakfast pizza and pushed for it to be included. My 2 biggest take-away's was that the toppings were not "piled high" as described on their menu and that the crust was a big disappointment - thin and cardboardish. I left my crust rim on the plate and noticed that a majority of the 20 staff had done the same. The consensus from all was a glowing "meh". Actually I did hear a couple of co-workers proclaim; "it's pretty good" but an equal number compared its overall taste and appearance to "gas station pizza" with better toppings. I would say that this pizza was really good. I like a simple thin crust pizza that is crisp on the bottom and crust, good cheese/topping ratio and I'd say they delivered. I do not like chain pizza, and this is definitely not chain pizza. I would absolutely eat it again. I also tried the wings. It's more of a lollipop style going on. I thought it was alright. I'll try them again and ask for them well done which is my preference. That being said I'd still recommend them. This is a cute place and fun find in the Northland. They have an arcade with a wide variety of games including skeeball and a basketball game. The pizza was large and delicious. My cousin said the sandwich was really good. I was less interested in the cheesy bread but only because there was cream cheese on it and I'm not a fan of it. However, my husband liked it. Okay, so I have some issues here. We ordered Buffalo hot wings, The Italian Pizza, and Cheese Bread to go. My first issue is when we called to place an order, no one could answer my questions. How many wings come in an order? What's the Go-Jam BBQ? What's on your cheese bread? No one knew. The pickup was easy, and we didn't have any issues. Now on to the food. The wings were really good. 4/5. I like my wings saucier, these were kind of dry, but I added my own Buffalo and they were delicious. I've never had the French style and really liked them! The pizza was ... okay. It was supposed to have fresh basil, which it didn't. That was disappointing. The crust is good, but there was so much sauce that the cheese and toppings fell off the slice instantly. Also, I had an end piece of a pepperoncini with a stem on it which was gross. Lastly, the cheese bread. No one knew what was on it, and the menu doesn't specify, so we ordered it. It has goat cheese on it. Fine for some, but goat cheese is so gag-inducing to me, and I never would have ordered it it I knew. I asked, and never thought it would be on there, so that's probably on me. Overall, not sure I would go back. I was very disappointed in the pizza and the cheese bread was inedible for me. I'm frustrated that the employees had no answers to my questions. I understand that Covid can alter restaurants and service, but other than the employees being unknowledgeable, all my issues were food related. read more

First time trying this place. It wasn't super busy for a Friday afternoon. Our server went above and beyond for us! Very attentive. I had the turkey pesto. Pretty good size sandwich, my bread was a little more toasted than I like but still a good sandwich. My husband had the carnivore calzone, he said it was good but the crust was a little over done as well. The prices were pretty average for Kansas City area and with inflation prices have went up on many things.
