I love hot dogs and polish sausage and this place had both. Young lady was friendly and helpful so no complaints. You have to realize this is a hot dog place in a hallway. They have vegan hot dogs! What more can you ask for if you're a vegan. An actual hot dog stand that you can eat at with buns that are vegan and enough condiments to make it worthwhile. My kids love it as well. It is just your regular packaged vegan Italian type dogs, but when there is an option to eat quick and easy vegan without searching all over town, that is awesome. read more

The thing was so cracken hot that there was not another flavor recognized. Andouille is spicy yes (and I love Andouille normally) but that was just ridiculously hot and nasty for no reason. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of this place. I tried one of the spicy sausage dogs and it was decent. There was nothing special about it except the mild spiciness. It didn't help that we came minutes before closing but c'mon, at least heat up the dog so that it's at a decent temperature besides lukewarm. Yes, I just used that adjective. My friend and I also expected sauteed onions and condiments but everything was raw and plain. Not to mention that the cream cheese from the tiny packages. This is basically a hot dog stand in the lobby of a building. Slightly overpriced but the dogs are good. I am guessing rent can't be cheap in this building. The guy running the stand is a bit grumpy but everyone can have a bad day. My boyfriend and I frequent this place A lot. And I mean A LOT. Living in federal way, it's about a fifteen minute drive to get to the place not including finding parking. But i think it's worth it, especially during a relaxing weekend. But i enjoy getting their Beef Kosher dogs, with cream cheese, and sauerkraut. Oh gosh. Inexpensive and quick. Great place to go when you are in a hurry. After getting our order the line grew quickly, but it moved pretty fast as well. Tried a polish and a hotdog. I ordered the Polish dog, the hot dog itself was pretty mediocre, I'm sure it would've been better if it was actually hot and not warmish. The owner was pretty friendly but the service was slow and the overall quality of the food is rather sub-par, definitely does not justify its steep pricing. A friend and I stopped by the Tacoma Avenue location today for lunch. Nothing too fancy. A small place decorated in a car theme. I had the mozzarella sausage. The sausage was excellent but the bun was too soggy for my liking. My only other gripe would be the condiment bar. I know it's weird to some people but I've always hated using self serve food items. I'd much rather have them ask what I want on my dog and have it made up behind the counter. I'm sure I'll go back. I'll just go light on the condiments. read more

Decent dog. Overpriced. The $1.50 dog that Costco sells is nearly as good, but I'm sure Hot Rod Dog has a better-quality product.... Right? It's honestly hard to tell. My mozzarella brat was tasty but smaller than I'd hoped for the $4 I dished out. If you're downtown/on UW Tacoma campus, this is your only option for a dog. It does the job. Nothing special, nothing terrible. Do NOT order the pastrami sandwich. It was served on very lame, slightly soggy white bread. Tiny, unsatisfying excuse for a sandwich. For $7, I was expecting a sub.... or at least something larger and more meaty that I could sink my teeth into. Instead, I got a few disappointing slices of meat (which admittedly was the best part of the sandwich), and some icky romaine hearts. Do NOT serve me lettuce hearts on a sandwich! I've eaten here a handful of times and have never been too impressed with the food itself, but it is (somewhat) reasonably priced and better than most options on the UWT campus. After my last two interactions with the guy who mans the stand, however, I will not be going back; he is ornery and unpleasant. The first couple of times I went in I dismissed his bad attitude because he was clearly busy, but have since realized he just isn't very friendly. I am always nice when I go in and I always leave a tip -- what gives? I'm all about supporting local and giving people the benefit of the doubt, but this guy is consistently rude and I'm just not interested in handing over my hard earned money to someone who treats me like an inconvenience. I had a 45 minute break in between my classes and was feeling hungry! I didn't really have time to stop by the many sit down eateries around campus and I didn't really want chips or a Starbucks pastry. So what was I to do? Well I stumbled upon Hot Rod Dog. I was able to get a all beef Kosher dog with an array of topping at my disposal (although Im a ketchup & mustart kinda guy). My hot dog with a bottle water came at four dollars and some change. This was a quick fix that definitely hit the spot. Ohhh and the girl working the stand was super nice and down to earth! I'd recommend this place to all the students @ UWT! read more

It had a very good "snap" meaning the outer layer was a little crispy while the inside was nice and juicy. The bun tasted like the bun you can get at Costco. The entire thing costed me $5.52 including a bag of chips... Quite expensive if you ask me. You can get a polish dog at Costco with a drink for just $1.50. I used to work at Hod Rod Dog and I still buy food here. You think I would be sick of hot dogs, but I never could be. The sausages are local from Puyallup, a company called Blue Max, and they are amazing. The spices and ingredients used to make them are top notch. The buns are steamed so they can get stuck in your teeth, but I enjoy the soft bread over a tough bun. Onions are chopped fresh multiple times daily and the chili is also new each day. There are an overwhelming selection of condiments, which means you can try something new each time. Be sure to ask your server for cream cheese because they keep that in the back. This is a great local business owned by the most delightful couple, Tom and Joanna. Prices are completely reasonable and service is quick. There are tables for seating and they usually don't fill up. There's soda in cans, Snapple teas, water, vitamin water, and a selection of chips as well. Be sure to go to Hello, Cupcake right next door for dessert! read more
