I returned after a 45-year absence and my best girl and I have undertaken a search for the best burger in Tacoma. I of course went to Frisko Freeze, the burger bar of my childhood. Shake Shake Shake was the fifth local burger bar we tried thus far and it is hands down the best so far. I ordered a double cheeseburger, she-who-must-be-obeyed a cheeseburger. The patties were nicely prepared and cooked, and, most important protruded beyond the bun. Oh, the malts. My best girl ordered a chocolate malt. The lovely staff gladly and with no fuss navigated my adding chocolate and malt to their coconut and banana shake. We both vowed to return just for the malts so delicious were they. French fries were nicely prepared although I expected a bit larger portion for a basket. Next visit we'll order regular fries just to experience portion size. Ambiance? Shake Shake Shake is a 50's style diner with a Jetson's twist. Yep, until we discover better, Shake Shake Shake will be our go-to burger and shake destination. read more

I was disappointed by my experience because the temperature inside the restaurant was extremely hot. While I completely understand that it's been unusually warm outside and that weather can make it difficult to keep a building cool, the conditions inside felt excessive. What concerned me most wasn't my own comfort it was the staff. The kitchen employees looked visibly overheated and exhausted, and I genuinely worried about their health and safety. No one should have to work in conditions that appear unsafe due to extreme heat. What made it even more concerning was that, from where I was sitting, the person who appeared to be the manager spent much of the time sitting on a phone and computer while the kitchen staff struggled in the heat. I understand there may have been responsibilities I couldn't see, but it was difficult to watch employees who looked overwhelmed without seeing any visible support. I hope management takes this seriously. If the restaurant cannot maintain a safe working environment for both employees and guests, it should consider temporarily closing until the issue is resolved. We were recommended this place while we were at Mary Bridge for my son. We always try to find places we don't have in our area (aka fast food chains) and this place is quite the gem. The service was great. We got there right after they opened and it wasn't super busy. We were helped and we sat down. The vibes is very burger shack. It's not fancy or anything but it's definitely fun. I love the bar type seating round the center of the room. The shakes are delicious and you get a lot. Our food came out pretty quickly and it was, so dang good. The burgers were perfect diner/burger shack burgers. They had flavor and were so delicious. I used to work for this place for about 2 months. The place was always disgusting and they never gave a shit about cross contamination. No leadership. Always just the employees opening, running, and closing the restaurant. Don't eat here unless you have medical insurance and ok with contracting some sort of food poisoning. God forbid you use a cordless vacuum to vacuum the rugs instead of the 20 year old POS corded vacuum they tell you that you must use. I was fresh out of the military and was told that I couldn't be trusted with a brand new vacuum. This is a really cool place aesthetically but boy does the service suffer. When I visited, there was only one other person in the restaurant and I'm certain that he'd already ordered. There was one employee, and she was stocking thing or making place settings or something when I entered. I was not greeted nor given any instruction. I found the area where you order food, and I stood there for quite some time before the employee came over and asked if I would like to order. I ordered a Jumbo Smitty and a side of BBQ Bacon Cheesy fries. It took longer than I expected for my food to be prepared but I knew it was ready because the cook hit the bell to signal the other employee that my order was ready. She had just been helping some other customers and didn't hear the 'DING' and so my food sat there. It sat there for so long that by the time she realized that it was up there and finally brought it out to me, it was cold. The 1/4 lb patties must weigh 1/4 lb before they are cooked but as you can see in my photos, that does not look anything like 1/2 lb of beef and for $14.79, I was sorely unimpressed by the burger. Since everything here is ala cart, the fries cost me $11.49 and there were so many that I couldn't eat them all, but I wasn't very impressed with them either. They did have more bacon on them than I had expected so overall, that was probably the best part of my visit. I can't blame the restaurant for it but while I was there, two women came in with a toddler and they were being very rude and crazy loud. I had to get up and move to the back of the restaurant to get away from it. Then a huge crowd of people came in for what looked like a student government meeting of sorts. I overheard one woman asking if their order would be ready soon as they were on a time schedule. She informed the employee that they had placed their order online and set the visit time for their arrival and the employee said that they had never received the order. So, they had about 25 hungry people who had already placed their orders and limited time but no food. I don't know who's mistake that was but if that's the way this place is run, I don't see them being very successful in the future. A cool vintage interior and very loud 50's music can only carry this restaurant so far. They really need to work on training the employees in customer service and attentiveness. As for the food, it wasn't good enough for me to become a repeat customer but if you haven't been here, don't let my review stop you. Looking for a local burger spot and we found an amazing retro hole in the wall. This place is a gem. We each had the Smitty which is a 1/2 burger on a French roll. The roll was so fresh as were all of the ingredients, we shared a basket of fries, they were piping hot and crispy to perfection. We topped off with hot fudge milk shakes that were the best the each of us had ever had. The music is an eclectic mix of 80's and 90's. The service as quick and very pleasant. Garlic Mayo, and Truffle Aioli Their burgers come with a brioche bun, which is very soft. I loved the Mushroom Swiss Burger. It was LOADED with mushrooms. The sauce in the burger was also very flavorful! The only thing I would suggest is making it a double with the patty to balance out the mushroom-to-patty ratio. Their patties are pretty thin. My husband had the Single Classic and it reminded him of a Big Mac. The fries came out very crispy and fresh. And the sauces were made with love. I would highly recommend the Garlic Mayo if you are a fan of garlic. I enjoyed that the most. Service was good. Sunny Sunday Afternoon and we were craving "summer food". I told my husband to pull up to shake shake shake and if there was parking and it didn't look too busy, we'll get our burgers from there. We found street parking immediately so it was meant to be. There was one family in line ahead of us when we walked in. They are currently closed for indoor seating but the patio is open. You order first, then take a seat/wait. We ordered 2 burgers, an onion ring and a fountain drink. Yes, to share. $29 + tip. Dips are extra. Sides like fries are a la carte. I think it's a little pricy. We took a seat at a picnic table out back and we're told 15-20 minutes wait. Again, there was nobody waiting inside and there were about 6 tables outside. We waited and waited, 35-40 mins. Ugh. So hungry! The employees would come out every 5-10 mins with one tables meal. We would cross our fingers Finally our food arrived and it was DELICIOUS. Got off work it took over an hr to get after ordering with door dash and when using them I don't expect my food to come super hot but dang cold, soggy and tasteless. No thanks order two double double cheeseburgers only one had cheese. The so called box of fries and onion rings. Continuing the age old search for a good go to burger led us here after a movie at the Grand. I had the single classic without secret sauce and my husband had the mushroom Swiss burger. We split a large fry and jumbo hot fudge milkshake and our daughter had the kids chicken strips. My burger was really good! It was cooked well, the veggies were crisp and the bun soft. I am glad I only got the single and shared a fry because I was stuffed when I was done. My husband really liked his burger too and his only comment was that it had a bit too much mayo. Our daughter, predictably, barely touched hers but that is more about her being a toddler. We all really liked the shake as well. Went here many years ago and it was great but a lot has changed. You almost feel like a burden to the staff when walking in. No smiles, no welcome, nothing. Should have walked out at this point as it sets the tone. Burgers were made way too quick and they are thin meat patties and flavorless with too much thick dry potato bun. My 8 year old even said it was too much bread and not good...I could make a way better burger at home as it felt slopped together and very cheap. Now, the shakes - which were made by a staff member who looked as though they didn't want to be there...the shakes used to come in glass with the side metal carafe but now they are just in plastic and overloaded with whip cream and very messy. I ordered chocolate banana and there was absolutely no banana in the shake. I could also complain about the fries and onion rings...for lack of better words - I won't be back. We haven't been in here for ages, and decided to stop by after my daughter had a pretty intrusive doctor appointment. What better way to cheer up a kid than a milkshake? She had vanilla, which had sprinkles, and that made the shake all the better! Her dad had an Oreo cookie shake. I tried both of them and they were delicious. We have been in here before and enjoy their veggie burgers, hamburgers, and kids grilled cheese. The ambience is cool and diner like. They have a little patio out back for outdoor seating. My only complaint is that the menu can be a little confusing and the area you go up to order at is kind of in the middle of the walkway.
