This is the sign of a hearty meal!

Great new place downtown on Lafayette Street right across from the Hilton! This place has homestyle flair, and is open both for breakfast and lunch. They have a daily lunch board by the entrance that offers a choice of entrees and sides. One can do very well from these hot lunch choices, but there's also a menu if one might want a sandwich, salad, or basket. The food is all hearty and appealing. The clientele is diverse, and often includes police officers, office workers, retirees, and families. Everyone likes a good meal, served by friendly staff, at a good price!

Cute place!! Great service. We loved Heidi! The food was great! The cook even came out to check on how we liked it. We will definitely be back!

This place feels like home. Miss Rose is so welcoming. The food is solid and the prices fair. I wish I lived closer.

It's Simple as the name suggests…read more Nothing fancy or elaborate about this place. It's a small restaurant with a small open kitchen and a small dining room where you stand in line to place your order, get a number to put on your table, and servers bring the food to your table when it's ready. So, if you're looking for a large upscale, elegant restaurant with elaborate food presentations, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a simple, quick and delicious meal, Simple Joe Café is for you. The menu consists of a wide variety of breakfast favorites, but the menu is not intimidating and easy to read and order from. Simple enough. When my family and I arrived, the small dining room was packed with a few open tables and about six other customers in line waiting to place their order. On Saturday and Sunday, you cannot sit at the open tables or hold the tables until you have placed your order and given a tent number. At that point, the servers will help you find a table to accommodate your party. The employees do a very good job of clearing and turning over the tables to make sure everyone is seated and able to enjoy their meal in a timely manner. I am not a fan of breakfast food and normally don't eat breakfast, so I only had coffee while my family enjoyed their meal, so the food quality part of this review is based on what they described as they were eating. They each ordered Joe's Number One Breakfast Combos which came with two eggs, choice of meat and pancakes and they shared an order of hashbrown and a side of grits. The food came out quickly. They stated everything was fresh, prepared and cooked as requested, the food tasted very good and enjoyed every bite. Of course, the coffee was hot, and fresh and the service was fast and friendly. The relaxed ambience and decor add to the unique character of the restaurant. Date of Visit: Saturday 05-16-26 Simple Joe Café | 3057 Government St, Baton Rouge, LA

This place is awesome…read more I ended up here the other day not because I planned ahead. Instead, I was trying to meet a friend for lunch and he was so late that we couldn't get in where were trying to go. I saw the sign and off we went to Simple Joe Cafe. Simple, it is. Awesome food, it also is. This place is not fancy nor is it meant to be. This is a solidly Americana type menu and ordering at the counter, serving your own coffee, and picking your own table kind of place. AKA - the kind of place I love. I have been here a few times now and only had breakfast. Hint: they serve it all day. The two meat omelet is a great choice and has been my go-to. The other day some friends got burgers and a club sandwich and those looked great too. This will definitely be in the rotation for lunch.

Always going above and beyond and not only in customer service, but in the way she manages the restaurant when no one is looking. Very attentive to details down to labeling the correct items with proper dates without having to be constantly reminded or told. The bar is always clean with zero fruit flies anytime Nicole Brown is working as head bartender. When she's waitressing she's always accommodating to all guests/ children and pets . A joy to have at the Ruby Slipper. She should be managing the location in Baton Rouge and Corporate should give her a proper pay raise $$$ Way to go Nicole Brown, keep up the great work! Hope corporate reads the memo. Cheers!

We were able to be seated as walk-ins on Presidents Day morning, although the place was absolutely packed. The service here was warm and the food came out moderately quick. This place feels like one of those higher end casual spots, definitely a step above IHOP, but not quite First Watch. We ordered a bunch of things so we'll break it down one by one: Pancakes with bacon - a bit of a letdown. Pancakes had no real flavor and the bacon was good, not great. Beignets - pretty good. Better than some we've had for sure, a nice sweet and doughy treat. French toast bites - very delicious. Came with a nice, sweet dipping sauce that really brought it home. Fried catfish & grits - hit and a miss. The catfish was delicious and lightly battered, the grits were very heavy and buttery which didn't go well with the catfish. It does also come with a biscuit that was light and buttery. Creamy vanilla iced coffee - good. Nothing too special, definitely better than a chain like Starbucks, that's for sure. It had a nice sweetness to it. Altogether, Ruby Slipper is a decent breakfast spot. Nothing we ate really hit it out of the park, but we were satisfied with our meal. It really seems like a local favorite spot and one that feels convenient to hit coming and going from NOLA. If you're looking for quick, convenient, and moderately cheap, this is the spot you're searching for.

The sandwiches were fresh and packed with flavor, the pot pies were rich, creamy, and pure comfort food, and the appetizers were the perfect start to the meal. The whipped Parmesan mashed potatoes deserve their own standing ovation. They were unbelievably creamy, cheesy, and easily some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. And don't even get me started on the sweet pies... BOMB! They were the perfect ending to an already amazing meal. To top it all off, our waitress, Sophie C, was an absolute gem! (Visiting from out of town). Expected a wait, 20 minutes, no problem! Another 15 to place our order, and another 25 to receive our food. We were there over an hour before we got any food. Ooffff... it's fine. We're laid back and can roll with the punches-they're busy and staff was friendly-it'll all be worth it when the food rocks our socks. Sadly...no. Both grilled cheeses (entrees) were room temp and the cheese was already hardening. It felt as if they had forgotten to deliver the food. Waitress was so kind and took the one off our check. It was appreciated. Boudin balls were great!! Bedford and remoulade sauces were okay. Parmesan potatoes were good!! Brussel sprouts and fries were fine-would have been better if served hot, I think. We did the pie flight and they were all good. Not mind blowing, but good. I always give out second chances-public service and food service is tough and sometimes you just have off days. Worth checking out if you live in town!! But if you're just passing through, maybe just get some pie to go.
