My favorite budget place to stay in NYC! Great location and far enough way from the tourist HQ of Times Square. It's located in Gramercy Park, very close to Union Square and its Subway stop. A short cab ride, walkable too, from my favorite bars in the Lower East Side. The rooms aren't decorated in the latest modern chic look of luxury hotels. No closet, no ironing board. In my room was a coat rack, dresser, night stand, TV, and 2 beds. Bathrooms are down the hall-very ala Europe. They are surprisingly clean for a public restroom. Plenty of hot water, decent water pressure. They do provide towels, but they are little and not Downy soft. If that bothers you, bring your own. For added convenience, a sink is in each room. For $99 bucks a night, you can't go wrong with this hotel. read more

Clean and simple. Excellent location. Easy to find. Quiet street. Bathrooms are shared but always available and very clean. My twin bed room was tiny and sorta stuck in the 70s, but it was clean and that's all that matters (no bed bugs or roaches; sheets and towels were fine)! Nice front desk staff. Easy check-in and check-out. Perfect price for a room you don't plan to stay in for more than slumber. Free Wi-Fi. You can't do better for the Union Square area if you're on a budget! I'll be staying here again for sure. The only downside was that the walls are rather thin, and you can hear doors shutting throughout the hall. If you're sensitive to sound, this can be assuaged if you play a noisemaker on your phone all night. read more

Just stayed four nights here while my son and I toured the city. Very impressed! So clean, close to everything (5 min walk to subway), staff was super nice, maid service was everyday and great. This hotel is exactly what I expected based on the website and other reviews. I would recommend this to anyone on a budget who prioritizes safety, cleanliness, and location. My boyfriend and I (mid twenties midwestern couple) went for a fun weekend trip to NYC. It is in an excellent location - close to the subway, very safe, in a local neighborhood. The staff is great - check in people were friendly and gave us great recommendations on restaurants. The place is super clean and the maid service is on point. The only downside is the shared bathrooms (4 per floor, atleast on ours) - but this is advertised, so I expected it. You have towels, sink, and mirror in your room, so you only have to go to the bathroom for showering and toilet. I never had to wait for a bathroom, and they were cleaned regularly. Just good ole mom and pop style place. I give this place an A+, i would stay here again. read more

I was in one that was barely bigger than the bed, and another was big enough to house 6 beds (no joke), with incredibly high ceilings. Also, the staff was gruff in a way only New Yorkers can be, and you'll have to decide if that's a pro or a con. Hence, 4 not 5. I stayed here for two nights on a trip to NYC in late August. For just over $100 per night this is a real bargain. Hotel was clean and comfortable; and the location close to Union Square is amazing. I stayed on the 5th floor, with a quiet room in the back. The view from the room was fantastic. First off, you get what you pay for. Hotel 17 is a good opportunity for tourists on a budget in the city. It's no secret that the bathrooms are shared, the rooms are tiny, and everything is a bit run down. That's to be expected, and it has its charms. But when things don't work under conditions like that... oh boy... Here are three things that ruined my impression of the place - The toilet was constantly clogged, leading to some truly disgusting meetings with other people's leftovers. Someone on my floor also repeatedly urinated everywhere but the toilet bowl. - The wifi didn't reach my fourth floor room. The staff didn't act the least bit surprised, but claimed that "someone had been called". It never worked while I was there. - The keycard didn't work half the time. Had to go to the lobby almost every day to get a replacement. These things should not happen. Apart from that the hotel is centrally located in Manhattan, and everyone is really nice, so that could have amounted to a three or four star review... could. read more

The solid four-star rating is based on a Manhattan curve, which simply means that I'm okay paying $200/night for this in Manhattan, but I would be all "WTF?! $200?!" elsewhere. Let's start with the not-so-great parts of staying at Hotel 17 and then move onto the great parts, shall we? BAD: -The elevator takes FOREVER. I timed it and I suppose that, depending on how many peopel are in it, it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to nearly a minute to travel from one floor to the next. You can get around this by only using the elevator when you have luggage or when you need to go upstairs. -When traveling downstairs, you'd be better off walking down all the tiny, spiraling flights of stairs instead of using the elevator. This means you'll be practically dizzy when you get to the ground floor. MEH: -The lukewarm customer service from a guy who looks like he was forced into his dapper Hotel 17 employee uniform. The service is good enough and not rude but I'd love it if he could refrain from taking calls about reservations when I'm standing right in front of him, trying to check in so I can start my day in Manhattan! -The fact that there's only 2 bathrooms per floor, shared by something like 10 rooms. The longest that either myself or my dad had to wait for a bathroom was 5 minutes, so it wasn't something to have a cow about...but still. Take your showers at off-hours (like in the evenings) and you'll be set! -There isn't soap or paper towels or a hand dryer in the bathroom (although there is a plentiful supply of towels and a hair dryer in your own room!). -Logistically, I'm fine with sharing bathrooms with strangers. Practically, I sometimes wonder if some inconsiderate soul peed in the shower. Bring disposable flip-flops! GOOD: -No bed bugs! -Comfy beds (I like my beds on the firm side; I actually dislike the super fluffy, plush beds in some hotels.) -We had a triple room, equipped with a dresser and a mirror, a chair, a nightstand, two full beds, and a sink. Plus plenty of space to throw our luggage/stuff everywhere and navigate the room. -Didn't hear anything from other rooms. -Three blocks or so from Union Square Station. On our last day, we wandered around before gathering our things and boarding the plane in the morning and had the good fortune to run into a rather expansive farmer's market! Overall, I liked it! I was afraid it would be too hostel-like but it's really more like an actual hotel with shared bathrooms. Go forth and book at Hotel 17...just don't forget your flip-flops!!! read more

This hotel is in a great area, close to Union Square, so access to public transit is great, and there are a million excellent businesses for food and drink nearby (I recommend Ess-A-Bagel and Joe Jr. for great, inexpensive and authentic breakfast, and Pete's Tavern for a good cocktail) James, at the front desk was excellent, we had a small room for a few nights and when the temperature dropped drastically one night, the radiator knocked loudly for hours on end, the next morning, we informed James and he had us in a bigger, quieter room in minutes! The shared bathrooms are always available and always clean. It's a beautiful building, and it offers and excellent New York experience for a great price! I highly recommend this place and I will definitely stay here again for future trips to NYC! read more

This is a fairly decent spot for NYC when you don't want to stay in a hostel and you don't want to deck out close to $200 for a room. The staff is very funny and flamboyant. Upon checking in, my friend and I walked into a less than holy conversation about the fellow front desk man's religious beliefs. I think he was praying and the other guy was making fun of him. Oh well we joined in on the conversation and had a good laugh. We arrived early and were allowed to check in. Thank God. Nothing worse that having to trudge back to the hotel when you wanna be out in the city and are on a roll. The rooms are small, dark and have no closet or private bathroom. But they do come with 2 twin beds, a working tv, AC/Heater, a sink, closet bar, and a hair dryer! The toilets and showers are down the hall. I was a little apprehensive about the situation but it turned out to be totally fine. We never saw any other guests or had to wait in line for a WC. The bathrooms were cleaner than a public restroom but they had no soap or anything to dry your hands so bring your soap every time you go and maybe even a hand towel. The place seemed pretty safe. After a certain hour, they ask you what room you are going to and extra guests are frowned upon. The best thing about this place was that there were NO ROACHES and it's in a quiet residential area. yay! This place is a deal for any budget traveler. $99/night. Hell yea! That means I can spend more money on partying and shopping. read more

HOTEL 17! where do i begin, well i first stayed here in 2001,before the refurbsee woody allen film)it was cheap back then,and it still is now,so much ive been staying here once every 9 years now,the hotel is "euro" style,me being from here im used to sharing a bathroom,which are clean,and no lines,the rooms are basic,bed window(lucky if you have a street view,but can be noisy,due to traffic early)sink,hairdryer,soap,towels,radio clock alarm,basic cable tv,good for late night mnn cable shows!! firm beds,no bed bugs,clean,ice bucket?? well you have $$ left after the cheap rates! quirky elevator,even tho i got stuck in it once at 3am(blame the east village bars)clean hallways,friendly staff,there used to be some resident on the upper floors,one had a lovely small dog who would greet you,in the hallway,nice dude,the location is great,close to the"L" subway 2 stops to brooklyn,union squre is 5 mins walk away,styvesant square is a lovely small park,mumbles on the corner,nice eatery,local bars,great nightlife in the east village,the l.e.s is a short walk away too,deli shops have everything you need,i stay in the low season,january,$63 a night!! a steal,all i can say is,hotel seventeen is one of the cheapest budget hotels in new york,in a charming street,great neighbourhood,safe,and thats why i recomennd to friends around the world,and keeps me comming back year after year!! just booked for january 2011, enjoy! read more

This was my girlfriend and my first trip to the big apple together and we were a bit nervous about this hotel but we were pleasantly surprised! It is very cute inside with a very historic feeling to it and just very homey. The employees up front were very nice and informative with things to do and how to get places. There is only one elevator but you never have to wait long for it just don't be surprised when you get here if you feel a little crammed because its a bit small, but like I said, it's an old hotel. Each floor is split into too wings, which is nice because there aren't too many people in one area. There are two bathrooms on each Wing, my girlfriend only had to wait once for one, but other than that no problems with it, oh, and they are very clean! Speaking of clean, the room was the cleanest room we had ever stayed in, you can instantly smell the cleanliness. The room was smaller then we are used to with other hotels but it was still the perfect amount of space. We were even able to do a few workouts while we were here! While in the room you can't here any of your neighbors, the only time you could was while in the hall way, but who really cares about that. We were here during the winter and the rooms were pretty hot to start out with, but the room came with an air conditioning unit with a remote which ended up being perfect for while we slept. The little sink in the room was very nice and convenient for our normal bathroom needs without the toilet. The only thing I have to maybe complain about would be the ice machine, there is only one in the hotel and it was on the first floor and we stayed on the seventh, but really wasn't that inconvenient. I loved the location. It was only a few blocks from a subway station which could take you anywhere you wanted to go and there were great restaurants and grocery stores within a few blocks in either direction. All in all we were very very pleased with our stay here and would very much recommend it if you were ever looking for a nice inexpensive way to stay in the city! read more

My brother and I stayed two days, one night here and were impressed with the lodgings, the location, and the price. The hotel is very clean, there are no bugs, and the staff are responsive. For anyone familar with European hostels, this hotel has shared bathroom facilities (all of which were clean and had hot water). It felt like a place where you stayed a short time and then took off, and anyone who has backpacked won't mind it in the slightest. Anyone looking for fancy might want to look elsewhere. The weekend we were there, it was pretty quiet, but the people staying were all young people ages 18-23 and two couples were backpackers from Germany. The location was ideal for us because we spent two days at Irving Plaza, but it will do for anyone who will be situated in East Village. It feels safe, even at night. Our room comfortably fit two people, but definitely no more than that. I look forward to returning this Christmas! read more

I read reviews and was prepared for this vintage hotel for my 2 1/2-week stay. The staff was kind. The cleaning crew was great. The location is great as there are pharmacies, bus lines, and affordable eating places within a block, and the subways are three and a half blocks away. The room is tiny, the elevator is an old model, the cable TV was at least half Chinese and Spanish (which are useless to me), and I was not able to control the heat (but there is an air conditioner). The room had a sink, but toilets and showers are shared. I give credit to the staff for keeping the bathrooms clean, and I cannot blame them that some fellow guests leave the bathroom a swampy mess after using it. The cellphone reception was choppy (maybe because my phone plan is from out-of-state??--well, I'm not sure why), so I used my cellphone outside somewhere. I had no bugs! Overall, for Manhattan this hotel is very affordable, thus it deserves four or five stars relative to New York budget hotels. The cost is still high for my budget lifestyle (especially after adding New York City taxes), and I don't like small rooms with shared restrooms, but you cannot find a better bargain in Manhattan. read more
