We stayed in Suite 306 in the top corner of the building, it was really romantic and fun. We had a great view of the plaza, a nice clawfoot tub, with super warm old beautiful radiators. Right in downtown Arcata, its walking distance to lots of shops, restaurants and bars. The Hotel was of course old and very charming. We will be coming back for sure. read more

Finding a reasonably priced hotel in Arcata is HARD. So I knew going into the experience that I should keep my expectations reasonable. For what we needed though, this was perfect. Location wise it was perfect, especially with Tomo Sushi downstairs. It's easy to bar hop and stumble home. Personally, didn't have too much of an issue with noise, but we were on the side opposite the square. The only downside was being there during construction. It's an old hotel with no window screens, so aside from bugs, it's not noise-proof. However, you go into the experience knowing this. It has a cool, old school vibe, which is fun. The soap in the shower was lousy and sheets were meh, but everything was clean which I appreciated. Parking wasn't an issue. Only thing was I had a TERRIBLE flea problem after I left. I can't necessarily attribute this to the hotel itself, but I had seen other issues about it in the past. read more

The Hotel Arcata is lovely! Comfortable rooms, great location, friendly and helpful staff. Also, the hotel is in a great location downtown - very close to restaurants, shops, the wine bar, etc. The rooms facing the square get a lot of noise at night, as the bar patrons below sit outside and talk while they smoke. That said, bring earplugs or request a room that doesn't face the square. read more

The Hotel Arcata is a fabulous older hotel. We've stayed there twice in the past week and our experience was wonderful both times. The rooms are simple and clean, the clawfoot tub and shower are great as well and really keep the cool retro vibe going. IF you like hygienically sterile motels like Best Western, you might not find the Hotel Arcata to your liking, but if you like older well loved buildings with cool old pictures showing Arcata back in the day, this is the place for you. Parking is a bit finicky but the noise from the bars down below is not an issue if you don't have a room facing the plaza. All in all a great place to stay, and walking distance to lots of great places to eat. read more

Went here looking for a room the day of, and the staff was very nice and accommodating. We got our two bedroom suite within an hour of booking on the spot. This was a great last minute find as we found ourselves in Arcata on our road trip. The only other options I found were your standard motels that were cheap, but per the pictures made those places look absolutely disgusting. On the other end of the spectrum, nicer places that you paid for. Hotel Arcata was just right and the staff was very friendly. It was built in 1915, so there's definitely wear and tear. The walls are also a bit thin as we heard our neighbors in a full out argument with screams and tears at 5am. Granted, the way they were going at it, I don't know if the thickest walls would have muffled their volume. Overall, I was very pleased with our stay. read more

This was a very cute hotel right in the middle of Arcata. It was very easy to get to Humboldt University, where my daughter is studying, and the town is very quaint with a lot of interesting shops. The hotel gave me earplugs at check in due to possible street noise, which surprised me, but I didn't need them. Free parking is actually street parking, so make sure to check and read the street parking signs. The bed and pillows were ok but i was happy to see there were multiple outlets and usb phone chargers next to the bed. Would i stay here again? A strong Maybe. I write this while I lay in my hotel room that reminds me of subpar hostels in Thailand. I really didn't expect this hotel to be so bad. My boyfriend and I actually purchased two hotel rooms, one for us and one for his son, and I really wish we had just went elsewhere. You almost get your hopes up seeing that they put effort in the hallways before you realize no effort was put in the rooms themselves. I will edit this post tomorrow with pictures but I had to reiterate what others have previously said in regards to the condition of the place. Check in was supposed to be 3 pm but we still had to wait. The rooms smelled like they were DOUSED in Lysol right before we arrived. We are seriously wearing our shoes on the hotel carpet instead of going barefoot, we put the 100 year old comforters on the floor because they're so old, stained, and falling apart. I got excited when I pulled the comforter back to see what looked like clean sheets until I noticed a blood stain on one of the beds along with random hair and residue all over the sheets. The bathroom is in horrible shape. It is so easy to get the stains and limescale off the shower head and handles... why not just do it? This being an old building is no excuse for the bad shape of literally anything useful to a customer. Yes, the noise really is THAT bad and you will need earbuds to get any sleep. It's almost 12 am and I'm exhausted but can hear every conversation, "woo-hoo", and passerby talking to themselves. It's currently 60 degrees and 12:00 am and somehow muggy and miserable in our room. The man at the front desk apologized and said earlier today it was oddly warm out @ 75 degrees but will cool off in the rooms later. It hasn't. My boyfriend just got back with a fan he purchased at cvs so we can sleep with a little comfort. I've stayed in historical hotels in San Francisco and in San Diego and they put this place to shame. The hotel is very historical. Great photos and history on the walls. It is right on the plaza, which makes it wonderful for walking around town. The bathtub (claw foot) was very comfortable. The water was as hot as you like. The staff are friendly and helpful. However, the noise level outside made it hard to sleep. We stayed on a Tuesday night in September. Between the large transient population, bar hoppers and delivery trucks at 4:30 am, I did not get a very good night sleep. Earplugs helped some. The noise level is the reason for the 3 stars. All in all I would consider staying here again, but request a room on the opposite side to the plaza. read more

Okay. Well, the location of this place is good if you want to be close to the town plaza but that's about it. It sits above a couple bars and is a hot spot for the town transients which didn't really bother my boyfriend and I, but it's a little sketchy when it comes to parking your car. Supposedly, the hotel offers parking passes but we didn't receive one on our stay and to be honest, I was pretty anxiety ridden because of the parking situation. It's basically you park your car a block or two away or risk it getting towed over night. Now, as far as the room goes, it's a no frills hotel room. No microwave, no fridge, and just a ceiling fan. I get it though it's an older,historical hotel which I wasn't expecting it to be modern but I was at least expecting it to be clean. Oh and back to the fact that it's above a bar. I already currently live in a college town so I didn't think it would be a big deal but it was. We could sleep through music, people talking, but not people screaming outside of the hotel room. Like blood curdling screams just for fun. All in all, I wouldn't stay here again. I'm a little bummed because this was my first stay in Arcata and I don't think I'll be back. read more

Super Dope if you really like the smell of spicy mayonnaise throughout an entire building. Be sure not to miss the very loud recycling outside your room in the early mornings. Don't forget anything super important like keys, because you will have to call repeatedly to get them. Over several days. And have the staff lie to you about it- they will eventually send it back- but at cost to you- because as the manager said- it's how hotels "do" it. Never Again. My major problem is the total disrespect given by hotel staff when we reported leaving jewelry in our room when we checked out. I had to call 3 times to follow up, and more than 18 hours passed before we heard back. Of course, by that time it was gone either taken by the next guest, or more likely the hotel staff. It seems like they've rehearsed this routine. Guest calls to notify that something was left, followed by hours and hours of not responding, then - oops - nothing's there, next guest must have taken it. I have zero trust in this place, and consider it to be totally rude to not to immediately check the room when notified, or return my calls over the 18 hour period that followed. Room was very musty smelling, too. Smelled like asbestos or mold. The sushi restaurant was ok. read more

This hotel has nothing to recommend it. It's nice enough looking but is on top of a bunch of dive bars. On a Thursday it didn't get quiet enough to sleep until past 2 am. And we were way up on the third floor. Several fights broke out around closing time on the street and a couple drunk ladies had to be escorted out of the hotel by the cops. You don't get individual temperature control so the only way to cool down is to open the window. Which makes the screaming and yelling of the drunks louder. If you want your kids to hear about 50 f-bombs from drunks before they go to sleep then this is the place for you. People say it's "conveniently" located next to the plaza. Well I guess it's convenient to be close to the plaza if you like dirty homeless people, unwashed Hacky-sackers and street kids. Too bad because Arcata is a great town. But this hotel is awful. BEWARE... They made a mistake on our reservation and refused to refund our money. We showed up and they had given our room to someone else and tried to make us pay for a more expensive room. We left and had to pay for another hotel and they still have not refunded our money even though we didn't stay there. They definitely did not care about pleasing their guests. When you stay at the Hotel Arcata- don't expect luxury- you wont find it. However, you will find a hotel that is true to the past- its a historical landmark and the owners have done a good job in keeping it feeling historic. That being said- I give this hotel 4 stars- but not in the traditional sence. Because its historic, you'll have real keys to your room (instead of electronic ones) a real radiator, a claw food tub and very simple accommodations. Its clean- but its worn. My bed was comfy but the comforter and carpet was in need of replacing. The hotel is in the perfect location- right on the Arcata square. That being said- the walls are thin (I could hear my neighbors getting hot and heavy in the next room) and the loud nightlife from the streets will keep you up if you are a light sleeper. Be sure to cruise the halls and look at all of the photos on the walls....so amazing the lives that people in Arcata lived back in the day. I appreciated all the Hotel Arcata offers-I really enjoyed my stay and will return! read more

The best thing about this hotel is its location. It's right on The Plaza so if you choose to stay here you're walking distance to wonderful restaurants, just steps from the Saturday Farmers Market, seasonal festivals and little shops in town. That's really it. I've stayed at this hotel several times just because of its location... and that's the only reason. The beds are old and should be replaced - squeaky with springs that you can feel by just touching the mattress. The the linens are fine, but the bedspreads are similar to what you'd find at an old motel in the 80s. The sheets and blankets are all marked with black sharpie to indicate what size bed they belong on -for example: "Q" for queen. This is something that I would expect to find at a cheap motel...not a charming historic hotel that charges $100+/night. During my most recent stay there, the staff seemed generally helpful and quite friendly, except for my encounter with Zach at the front desk. He was extremely rude and condescending. Surprising that his job is in hospitality...doesn't seem to want to be helpful or friendly. Not sure why he is there, but honestly by the way Zach treated me, I won't stay there again. I'm more than happy to spend my money somewhere that cares about the happiness off its guests. read more

They had 4 cops kick me and my two friends out onto the street at 2:30am on the 4th of July. Sure, we weren't being angels, but they should have complained to me directly. Instead they opted with force by using Arcata's finest. The night manager said she was so disappointed to be "pulled from bed" to tell us to be quiet. Wait a second, isn't it your job as a night manager to mange your guests at night? For Christ's sakes, how could you kick us on the cold street on July 4th all in the name of celebrating the birth of our country. This is a very old historic hotel with few modern amenities. Beds were really old and definitely needed nicer bedding. Homeless people were outside the front of the hotel. Staff was nice and very helpful. The hotel was not quite for us and we ended up going to another hotel. read more

Besides that, I have tried the other options in this town, and unless you like depressing, dingy motel rooms off the side of the highway, this is the place to be. Um, it was ok. Very loud during "quiet hours" The noise from the bars next door wasn't a big issue, but people seemed to like yelling under the windows of the rooms facing G Street. The showeads try to remove your skin, I understand it's an old building, but holy crap, showering is a painful experience. ALSO, on the night of my last stay, something tried to eat me alive, I woke up in the middle of the night itching my legs like crazy, to the point the bite marks were raw. I am sitting in my room right now at 11pm. My room smells of sushi & is vibrating with club music from below & yet also everywhere around. Some guys just walked past my door saying it "stinks of bong water".. nope it pretty much smells like fish to me. The lightbulb over my shower is burnt out which makes the maybe charming vintage tub seem super creepy. Good location though... clean & historic. This hotel gets an 'A' for location, right on the town square near lots of fun shops, restaurants, bars, and the food co-op. We had a mini-suite room that was very spacious, but smelled like some strange cleaner when we arrived. I think the room was clean, but spare. The bed was definitely dated and not comfortable. This hotel does not have A/C but you can open the windows and it has ceiling fans as well. Overall, a great location but I probably would not stay here again. read more

Such a cute hotel, we pass through Arcata every year on our motorcycle ride to Oregon. Unfortunately it is just so loud. Its such an old hotel, the walls and stairs are clearly wood, no cement. Everyone walking down all the halls, echos throughout the hotel. We had kids playing for the second year in a row. We didn't sleep well this trip or the last. I'm afraid we'll have to stay up by the airport next year so we can still make it to the Best Japanese Restaurant in the world, Tomo! read more

This place needs help. It looks cute from the outside, but that's about it. The rooms are dated and dark, and not at all insulated against the noise of "downtown" Arcata. On top of that, my room was never serviced. Finally, the person at the front desk when I checked out - not at all apologetic, and very reluctant to give me a $10 discount for the fact that no one cleaned my room. In addition, when I asked about the discount upon not seeing it on the bill, was met with a raised voice and an utter lack of customer service. Cheap, rustic accommodation in the heart of crunchy Arcata. A historic hotel with all the creaks, squeaks and smells associated with one. By all means, try to snag a room away from the street. Trucks slowly rolling by into the latest of late night hours kept me from sleeping soundly. But overall, I liked this place. I really liked the Hotel Arcata. Yes, it is old. Yes, it is on a main drag and can get a little loud outside at night. BUT...it's unique, has character and is well kept. I enjoyed my two night stay with them, my room was on the back corner so the street noise was fairly loud but I also had my windows open for the nice breeze. There is no AC, but you don't need one. Great big windows that let plenty of light in during the day. I loved the bathroom and the claw foot tub. I felt very at ease and comfortable in my room, sometimes in the newer chain hotels it's really sterile and boring. I kept wondering if my room was haunted (it wasn't). The front desk folks were really nice and very helpful. My window curtain rod fell down on one side when I opened one morning and they fixed it quickly. Very conveniently located being on the plaza within walking distance to many restaurants and shops. I liked the photographs a lot that decorated my floor (the 2nd) and enjoyed the stories that accompanied them. They have a decent continental breakfast with big delicious muffins, fruit and oj. The coffee they served, I thought, was fantastic. The only downside is the creepy, dirty, stinky pan handlers (and hippies) that frequent the square and the bars next door but I just chalked it up to Arcata's unique population and went with it. I do like that it is owned by a local Tribe. Overall, I enjoyed it and would definitely stay again. read more

I stayed here Friday and Saturday night. The location is great. It is next to the plaza in the middle of downtown Arcata. If you are looking to do any shopping, dining, or bar crawling, this is prime location. Surprisingly, we never had an issue parking. The furthest away we had to park was about a block. I would recommend staying her if you are looking for something a little different than Super 8 or Motel 6. You might pay a little more here, but the hotel, like most of the denizens of the town, has a distinctive personality. On Friday night there was some noise coming up from the street, but closing the windows reduced to a low hum. read more
