Extremely poor customer service. Based on this experience, I would be very hesitant to trust Hotel Baker with any important event or family celebration. Very disappointing experience with Hotel Baker. We canceled our Easter Brunch reservation in advance, and I called again on Friday to confirm that we would not be charged. Drew told me he did not see my name anywhere and specifically said I would not be charged. Despite that, Hotel Baker still processed a $360 charge to my credit card. I have now contacted the hotel multiple times, and Drew acknowledged that he remembers telling me that. However, I am now being told that no one can process the refund until the manager, Trina Ledger, returns on Thursday. In other words, they know the charge was wrong, but are still not correcting it immediately. read more

When I booked our room I had to make my reservation over the phone rather than online, the website had apparently been down for quite some time. This was a bit of an inconvenience but not a deal breaker. Upon arrival, I was hoping for charm and character and instead was greeted with a hotel in a state of disrepair. Layers of paint covering all surfaces and just seemingly in desperate need of a deep cleaning. The tongs for the ice cubes had a layer of filth on them that came off when rubbed, the ice bucket did not come with a bag and had a hole in the bottom that leaked. We were also notified when checking in that outside alcohol was not permitted inside the building (at a hotel?!?). They didn't provide soap/shampoo/conditioner in the shower (may have been available by asking the front desk). The rest of the room felt more like a Motel 6 type establishment. The free breakfast consisted of bacon, scrambled eggs, bread, cereal and fruit. While there were some neat old touches (mail slot, elevators) and street parking was convenient, the cleanliness/datedness left a lot to be desired. read more

I recently attended a wedding here. There were pros and cons, as there are with any venue, but some of the cons are quite baffling especially given the cost of this location. There are no designated rooms for the wedding party to get ready in prior to the wedding. You would essentially have to book two of their hotel rooms for two nights to have a place for the bride/bridesmaids and groom/groomsmen to get ready prior to the wedding. There is no where to put the wedding party's items - no closet or little room where you can store things for the wedding day (makeup, shoes, boutonnière pins, etc.). Everything has to go back into your car and there is no parking on site. Most of the available parking is a good 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. This may seem minor to many of you, but it represents the hotel's lack of attention to details. The tablecloths were all either wrinkled or creased. Why are they not steaming the tablecloths? This is a fairly expensive venue and you do not steam your tablecloths? There were chips in some of the dishes they served to guests at dinner and one guest even had a squished bug on the back of her fork. When guests were entering the main entrance to attend the wedding, there was no clear direction or signage for where to go for the wedding. One employee was instructing people to gather in the main area, but there was clearly a group gathering for something completely unrelated to the wedding causing confusion. The location is beautiful. The food was pretty good. Most of the staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. This place needs some refining and updating to better accommodate their guests and those hosting events at their establishment. read more

Gorgeous hotel. I was here for a wedding so saw different aspects than during a usual stay. My guest room was smartly designed and very well maintained. It felt so clean that I ran a Kleenex across the picture frame and lamp shades - there was zero dust. I loved the outdoor garden and the main dining room in the round. It was very unique and fun. All of the staff were very friendly. I really liked St Charles and will definitely be back and staying at Hotel Baker. read more

This review is based off a wedding, I did not stay here as an overnight guest. This place is stunning - the views inside and out are absolutely gorgeous. My friend got married here and the building is over a 100 years old, it has so much character and charm. There are multiple rooms for large gatherings which we used throughout the night. The service was great - there is a coat check in as soon as you walk in so you don't have to have your stuff hanging from your chair the whole night. The courses were timed out great. Staff was friendly and funny! Bartenders were awesome and alcohol was top shelf. Food was good! Better than your typical 'whatever it's wedding food' food. From the salad, bread and main course everything was delicious. The chicken was a little dry but nothing terrible. Very disappointed in the Brunch with Santa. Knowing that we were going to the Hotel Baker, I was expecting too at least have a carving station instead it was frozen potato cakes, cubed potatoes which they called cheezie potatoes with shredded cheese on top, no omlette station just your typical scrambled eggs, no belgium waffle station just quarter pieces of waffles that were probably frozen and cut up and then the desserts I would expect to be rather top shelf for the Hotel Baker were just terrible! For spending almost $50 a ticket for that brunch I could have gone elsewhere and gotten a lot better. To top it off, you had to pay for the picture with Santa! Never again! read more

Easter Brunch food and service was wonderful but was disappointed that "celebratory cocktails" as mentioned on Easter Brunch flyer from website were not included in the $98 cost. Flyer explicitly calls out brunch "Complemented by an array of delicious deserts and celebratory cocktails". When I asked about this, waitress told me brunch was "complemented" (available for purchase) by cocktails although "complemented delicious deserts" were indeed included in the $98 brunch price. This explanation made no sense and flyer was very misleading if not downright deceitful. The Hotel Baker mishandled my reservations for my high school reunion. I wanted to stay at the Hotel Baker because I used to stay with my grandmother there in the late 60's, my brother got married at the Baker, and we had our senior prom party there, too. In January, I made reservations for the nights of September 26 and 27. Then, I wrote/called to add the night of the 25th. As I was preparing to fly to Chicago for my stay--I checked my invoice, only to find that they added the 25th, but subtracted the 27th! When I called to tell them of their mistake I was told "that the GM" couldn't help. What kind of hospitality business are they running? When I told my Hotel Baker experience to my friends, at the reunion, they all had other stories like "there website doesn't work. "No one answers the phone. " I've written to them a few times. No one writes back. The staff are sweet at the hotel but the management is AWOL. I spent a lot of money to stay at The Baker, the two nights I stayed, then paid more at the Herrington in Geneva for the 27th. Bad business. read more

First to start I never was one to write a review whether it be a good or bad experience regarding a Hotel or a restaurant,but unfortunatley the service we received or I should say lack of was so bad I could not forgive myself if I did not warn other people of how bad this place really is especially with the money they charged to dine there.First when we arrived they fumbled around for 15 minutes in the computer looking for our reservation,after they finally found it they led us to a table upstairs I believe we were table #20,when we were seated we waited over 30 minutes for a server,we finally flaged down a bus girl who spoke no english at all,lucky for me my girlfriend speaks Spanish,she asked for our server and came back on her own with a small glass of diet coke with no ice in it,we finally got ahold of our server that was assigned to us were she proceeded to toss a can of diet coke to me and told my girlfriend coffee will be coming shortly,as you can imagine she never showed up again so we took it upon ourselves to go to another server and ask for coffee,the carving station where the prime rib was stood empty for over 15 minutes,after, growing tired of waiting for someone to arrive we asked the cook making the the eggs if someone was going to show up soon,he replied and I quote,"I dont know,he went to go look for a knife," After finally showing up he cut a decent size piece of prime rib,unfortunately the heating lamp must not have been working because it was ice cold,after finally having enough of the absent service and the mediocre food we called for our check where at this point a Spanish gentleman witch turned out to be our server that we never seen up until now showed up with our check,I never complain about a business if I don't like it I usually tip accordingly and don't go back,but after spending$252.00 I decided to call back to speak to a manager where at that point I got some kid on the other line that sounded like she was 14 years old telling me the manager was busy and that she would relay the message,I called back twice with no call back,,the rest of the staff seemed decent only problem with that was that there was a definite language barrier because of the fact that 60% of the people we encountered for help didn't speak a word of English!!! Look guys for the money your going to spend here there are plenty of places in St Charels to go to were you will be treated the way you should for a fine dining experience,and allthough this is a beautiful historic Hotel this place unfortunately isn't that place,Hopefully the Hotel changes hands in the future and gets owners that know how to treat their guests. read more

We recently stayed at Hotel Baker and it reminded me that just because something is historic AND expensive, it doesn't mean it's going to be great. Pros: Bedding was clean and the location is nice. There was also a heating light in the bathroom which was great but it did turn off after a short period of time. Cons: The room we stayed in was not clean, as it had some chunks of long hair stuck to the side of the shower, dead bugs lying around, blood stain on a towel and what appears to be a bad paint job over some mold in the bathroom. The vents are beyond filthy and caked with dirt and dust on the inside. Also, it is not the most accessible hotel. If you plan to have an event in the garden area, prepare to have your guests with wheelchairs, walkers, etc go to a further entrance than the main one that everyone else will be using. The main entrance to the back area of the hotel has steps in multiple locations. Parking isn't fun and there is no valet. You need to park a block or so away and this can be hard to do if you forget items, have multiple people staying and riding with you, etc. Some may say this is a pro, yet our beds were so soft that if someone was lying next to me, I rolled toward them. There was no way two people could sleep comfortably unless smooshed together. Room service is minimal and some items are only available Thursday-Saturday. The menu is primarily for dinner service. Overall, the cons outweighed the pros for me. The cleanliness, if addressed, would increase the value of the stay. However, I just can't imagine paying the amount we did to stay there again - and we won't. read more

For such an expensive boutique hotel, the staff seemed poorly trained on customer service. it seemed like they were all kids - which isn't bad in itself - but they were kids with no appreciation of how to look after travellers spending a lot of money. This is management's fault ultimately. My wife and I drive 10 hours to stay here for a Ricky Skaggs concert at the Arcada Theater. We were not advised at time of booking that we would be in adjoining suite with a bridal party. If we knew this we would have requested another room or not stayed at Hotel Baker. Not the bridal party's fault and I hope they had a wonderful wedding. Very minimal sleep for us. The food, drinks and staff at the bar were excellent! Unfortunately the hours of the bar / restaurant are awful. They are leaving a ton of money on the table and inconveniencing guests by making them go elsewhere for food and drinks at times outside of their limited schedule. We spent $200 at the bar and texted pictures to the bar/restaurant manager of the food for her to use in updating their website. After getting back home I emailed reservations about my dismay about the lack of communication in our room being attached to a bridal party - requesting a refund of some type or a discounted future stay as we are back for another concert in December. I got a quick response on Monday August 5th that the Guest Services Manager Rachel has been advised of my concerns and will get back to me promptly when she is back to work on the 7th. 2 further follow up emails later - no response as of August 10th. For around $600 Canadian equivalent per night, we are not impressed. With proper management and some money spent on updating and fixing the broken elevator (one of two), the right team could bring this place back to the glory it supposedly once enjoyed. Something always went wrong, and they just talk shit instead of learning what to do next time. The owners are never there. Rowena does NOT care about her employee's well-being, period. Hotel Baker made my son and his new wife's dreams come true! From the beautiful views overlooking the Fox river where they got married on the garden terrace to the best coffee I've ever had! Hors d'oeuvres we're excellent- drinks also top notch! They choose chicken , salmon and vegetarian ravioli for their meals and each one got rave reviews. They celebrated in the Rainbow room. Which just added a touch of fun to an evening of dancing! I would recommend Hotel Baker to anyone looking for a special place to celebrate any special occasion! Very disappointed in HOTEL Baker! I called up to set a Saturday night romantic evening and asked if they had a standard hotel room with military discount and they said they had one left for June 3. He tried to have my credit card run twice, but had some problems put me on hold and they came back and said that he couldn't give me that price on the standard room. I asked to speak to his manager Josh, and Josh said that he couldn't honor that discount because the person who took my phone call John was new and didn't know what he was doing. I said that's not cool that you should really honor that because I had already given them the credit card number and was processing the payment. Josh said that that was unfortunate and he was sorry, but couldn't do it. I asked to speak to the general manager or owner, and they said that she was not in that they would leave a message for her and she would call me back. It's been two days and no call back so I am understanding that they have really bad customer service skills. It's a shame because I used to work there in the 90s and is a really nice place, it's too bad they don't have, a business sense to honor their price given. I LOVE Hotel Baker. We had our rehearsal, ceremony, and wedding there. We also stayed two nights for these events. The rooms we saw were so adorable. The bathrooms were modern and offered very nice products. We stayed in the penthouse and the balcony was so so cool. They have free (good) breakfast in the morning. Now onto the actual wedding- I am so happy I choose hotel baker. The planning, staff, day of was absolutely perfect. Everyone who attended said it was a magical night and asked if we could get married again- and we totally would do the night over again just to celebrate at Hotel Baker. VERY cool, boutique hotel in picturesque St. Charles, IL. I am a frequent business traveler, so it was really nice to stay in a unique, historical hotel rather than my usual venue... some random, uninteresting chain hotel like a Fairfield or Holiday Inn. The Baker is filled with wonderful architectural details and comforting design features. As I often do with hotels, I'll list the pros and cons: PROS: - Beautiful, historical detail. - Wonderful, picturesque views of the Fox River. - Free garage parking across the street (also, plenty of close street parking). - Well-appointed rooms with antique furniture. - Renovated, modern bathrooms with luxury amenities. - Upgraded television service. - Tastefully renovated bar area... live music on weekends. - Delicious continental breakfast (FANTASTIC bacon) - Fast internet. CONS: - Very small gym... basically in a large closet in the basement. - Mattresses are too soft and obviously old... hopefully replaced soon. I recently attended a wedding in October and had the worst experience. The poor bride and groom were left to set up and take down their own tables and chairs for their guest because they were poorly staffed. There were spills all over the dance floor and down the stairs from the balcony which was hazardous for all the guests. The overall set up was odd too it seemed like there was no planning involved and everything was poorly managed. The food was the only thing that was ok. The drinks were watered down and selection was poor. I truly feel bad for my friends who had their wedding tainted by this venue. read more

My company has sent me here for a few company events on 2 or 3 occasions and to visit offices. This is a pretty hotel, with no substance. after 35 years of food & beverage and the hotel industry, I know. 1. the beds and pillows are hard as concrete, with no ability to get a softer pillow. Brick pavers for patios would be softer than the pillows here, and when asked if I could get one that might be a bit pliable, I was told we don't have extra pillows. 2. the restaurant never seems to be open. 3. the bathroom is small and has a pedestal sink, which has no room to put anything like soap make-up or more than a toothbrush. 4. the shower has no lip on the shower pan, and the curtain is approximately 5 inches off the floor, so the water from the shower just runs right onto the bathroom floor., which needs to be mopped up with 1 of the 2 towels they give you, or get electrocuted when drying your hair. 6. the antique atmosphere is nice for weddings, but the rooms are dark and certainly not made for working in. the desk is small and the desk chair is a dinning room table chair which is way to low, good time to use the rock hard pillows. I will now have my company book me farther away, and travel the extra miles so i don't ever have to stay here again. As I am sure many of my co-workers will, as many complained also about their rooms and stay this trip. read more

It's a lovely old hotel, (I like old stuff), and St. Charles is cool (except for the noise on Main Street)--but the first room they gave us was a joke. It was TINY, had a view of a wall and garbage cans, a huge ugly stain on the ancient carpet, and no internet. None. And the hotel was practically empty--why were we put there?! After two nights of enduring creepy room 211, we got moved to the 4th floor, a larger, nicer room with internet and no stains. Just very noisy guests--the walls are like paper--and a scary nut job bartender at the Rox downstairs who wanted to argue with us about politics. We had half a drink and said goodnight. I'm glad we experienced it. Now we know. Next time, just have a drink on the great patio, and stay somewhere else. read more

Beautiful old hotel! Room was so comfortable and the staff was super nice. The view from my suite was breathtaking - I enjoyed looking at the running water. I made reservations for two suites as part of a wedding party for last weekend. The reservations were made a couple of months prior. I called the hotel the morning of my stay to inquire about possibly checking in prior to 4pm, and was told that my reservations were cancelled and only one room with two double beds was available. I never cancelled these reservations, apparently was an error on their part. The manager I spoke with, Jennifer, did not apologize, but rather just repeatedly tried to convince me to take their available room. I told her that was a ridiculous idea to accommodate my parents, my girlfriend and I in a room with two doubles. Ultimately stayed at the Fairfield in St Charles with a last minute reservation and had friendly service there. I also heard from my cousin (mother of the groom) that the front desk staff was rude to her. Lastly parking appears to be a pain at this hotel. I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Due to our family and friends working extra hard, our wedding was beautiful, but it was constantly on the verge of disaster because of the unprofessionalism of Hotel Baker's management. I have given Hotel Baker three weeks to contact me regarding the events that unfolded and have received no such solace. After numerous emails and calls to the hotel, it's time for our story to be shared in hopes that no other couple has to go through this experience. It is unfortunate enough to have to be a Covid wedding couple. When trying to reschedule our event the contact didn't answer us for weeks. It took getting in contact with a different person (who no longer works for Hotel Baker) to even get dates for rescheduling. At that time I asked the owner/manager to switch contacts for our event. We were not granted that opportunity. Two years of email communication between the event contact and ourselves during this planning was less than satisfactory. Every email required multiple follow up emails to get an answer. She was basically unreachable by phone, as we only had one conversation on the telephone prior to the event. At the rehearsal, our event contact didn't come to help show us how weddings at the venue are usually run. We ran the rehearsal ourselves without knowing the room or understanding the system Hotel Baker has in place. On the wedding day our event contact didn't show up and never reached out to us. No one from Hotel Baker came until nearly 6 hours after the time our coordinator said they would. The general manager arrived to help. The Hotel owner showed up at some point only to give us excuses, no apologies, and no attempts to help. All event details were prepared into a document that Hotel Baker had. We spent countless hours finalizing these details, getting the important information to the contact, and ensuring everything was accounted for in order for our day to run smoothly. We had folders, print outs, day sheets, and somehow no one knew what was happening the day of our event. My mother, my siblings, and even my husband were constantly asked what was supposed to be happening by the event staff. At the end of the night we were told the bar in the lobby would be open until 2am after our event ended at midnight. This was not the case. The bar was closed before our wedding was even over. There was no prior information communicated about retrieval of items. Within hours of leaving the Hotel, my mother noticed that we did not have my bouquet. She called Hotel Baker to let them know and was told she would receive a call back. She did not get a call so 3 day later she called again. She was told at this point that anything unretrieved after 48 hours is thrown away. Apparently even when you call to inquire on an item left, it is still thrown away without notice. Additionally, raw chicken was served to a guest resulting in food poisoning. I attached a photo to my email chain for reference but apparently that doesn't need to be addressed either. This venue runs a restaurant and bar daily. We are fully aware that this place is an old hote and we loved it being a backdrop to our wedding. The garden and all the areas of the wedding were beautiful but for how much our guests paid for their rooms it was unacceptable how dirty the rooms were from multiple cob webs, and broken windows. At this point, we have been reaching out to Hotel Baker to try to resolve these issues. Apparently we are not owed an explanation to the events or any resolution. I would have love to give this hotel 5 stars, in fact that was the expectation when my friend and I booked a $250+ (they charge extra for the bathtub which we clearly wanted to enjoy) that a friend of ours have recommended. We are both women, mothers of small children and have been together with our families during quarantine so logically we thought it was save for us to stay at a small hotel. For the price of the room we expected to have a larger room or at least to have the bathroom door of the room shut (everyone wants privacy when going to the bathroom) The hotel looks like is from another era and not in a cute quaint way but in a run down not well maintained way. We had to call the front desk because our hot tub wasn't turning on, to which the response was a sarcastic laugh from the receptionist saying "she didn't know why, it has never happened before" she didn't offer to send anyone to check either. The next morning right before check out another receptionist this time a less nicer one, called the room to accused us of smoking in our room because supposedly other rooms had complained about it, after I explained to her that it was impossible since my friend (a cancer survivor) and I did not smoke cigarettes, she continue to accused us of it and threaten us with a $500 find. We requested for anyone at the hotel to come and inspect the room before we left to make sure they wouldn't have just charged us for something we didn't do. We waited and waited and no one came up. We finally called her back, this time the woman was apologetic and said there was no need for them to come up and we were free to go. Clearly this harassment was coming from an establishment in which their employees have not been properly trained nor informed of laws against discrimination. We felt we were discriminated in the assumption that two women checking at a old town hotel must have been lesbians doing bad things in their rooms thus the harassment and lack of professional customer service. Businesses like these can't survive on assumptions nor poor treatment of their clients and also having broken bathroom doors ! We would never go back there! You can keep your insulting staff and your joke of a hotel. read more
