This review is solely based on walking around the resort . We were attending a Penelope Bourbon Tasting so we did not stay at The Herrington. This small boutique hotel is located along the Fox River in Geneva Illinois. It has a European charm with riverfront views and beautiful gardens. Only 60 rooms in size, rooms come with a fireplace and either a patio or balcony. Their spa and restaurant (Atwaters) are both award winning offering 5 star service. We visited because we saw a social media ad that they were having a Penelope bourbon tasting in the courtyard. Penelope bourbon was created to celebrate the birth of the founder's daughter. It was such a beautiful setting on the Fox River. We did the tasting and then ordered cocktails and an appetizer to linger over since it was such a beautiful evening. The hotel is very charming and Atwater's restaurant looks to be a real gem. Such a wonderful, historic spot in Geneva. Oh and the Toasted was my favorite. read more

Made a staycation while attending a conference at nearby Fermi Lab. Very cute, charming inn located in one of Geneva's oldest buildings. Built of local sand stone, the inn had an old world charm. The room was quite large and featured a walk in shower and jacuzzi tub. A fireplace and small patio overlooking a well manicured courtyard added to the many nice touches. The staff were very pleasant and made us feel welcome. Super comfortable beds and plush towels/robes made our stay even more enjoyable. The only drawback was the lack of an in room refrigerator (they charged $20/ night to rent) and an in house fitness room. They did offer free passes to the local park district facility which compromised, but it is approx. 2 miles away. Would stay here again and recommend to others. Their location sling the Fox River and charming banquet facilities also make this a wonderful choice for weddings or other special occasions. Oh and the nightly fresh baked cookies left in the room were a nice touch. read more

Amazing stay at the Herrington! We only did a 1 night stay visiting in the area but well worth it. We booked a suite balcony room and the rooms are quaint and cozy. Beautiful tubs and large bathrooms. Walking distance to third Street where all the restaurants and stores are. We did not take advantage of the spa amenities this time, but the cocktail lounge was nice. Beautifully decorated during Christmas as well. We plan on doing another getaway and will keep this place in mind for the future. read more

I've been to Lake Geneva, WI several times, but never knew a Geneva, IL existed... until this past weekend. I was invited to relax and unwind at this quaint inn located on the scenic Fox River. Although this establishment is decorated like a set from The Golden Girls, that's all a part of its charm. Heavy on dark wood, florals and tapestry. We were greeted by friendly front desk who checked us in quickly. The best part of it all, is that my lil precious pooch, Tikki, was welcome at the Herrington for a nominal fee. We checked into our beautifully appointed and spacious suite and began to settle in, when shortly thereafter, delicious chocolate chip cookies and milk were delivered to our room. Very nice touch. We took my dog for a long walk on the trail along the Fix River, ordered pizza from a nearby pizzeria, stuffed ourselves and went to sleep. The next morning I had an appointment for a microdermabrasion facial and it was just what the doctor ordered. Shania was very hospitable, asked pertinent questions before delivering an exceptional experience. Facials can sometimes be just a tad bit uncomfortable, but she was so gentle I actually dozed off (sorry for the snoring, Shania)! The hand massage put me in a further state of relaxation that I floated out of the treatment room into the waiting area and caught a quick nap. That evening we had dinner reservation at Atwater's, the in-house fine dining restaurant. The experience from beginning to end was nothing short of exceptional. Our server was welcoming, had tons of personality and made sure we were well taken care of. From the amuse bouche, to starters our entree and dessert, every course was top notch. Honestly, because I'm a chef and food snob, I didn't think a suburban restaurant could produce the presentation and flavors of city restaurants, but I was wrong. The shrimp and grits app and duck breast entree were some of the best I've ever had. The Herrington Inn and Spa, just an hour away from the city, is the perfect getaway for those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of weekend city life, but can still deliver on culinary excellence. This space was perfectly accommodating, with a great view from their outdoor space just outside the dining area. In addition to the great atmosphere, the food served was delicious all around as well. Our daughter got married across the street from this hotel, but we all stayed at the Herrington, it was so amazing! The staff alone was so kind, accommodating and fun! The restaurant there is amazing! The food is spectacular, super cozy restaurant, romantic! Rooms are so very plush! Beautiful bathroom with large tub and extremely Comfortable bed. House keeping on top of everything if you want them to be. We didn't need our room cleaned daily but we could have. It's a touch of old Europe charm with modern day convenience and. Beautiful restored hotel, big rooms with Tall ceilings and nicely appointed furnishings. My one frustration was virtually no ability to cool the room below 75 degrees. Staff rudely assured us after the first nite that nothing was wrong with our air conditioning and given a card taped to the thermostat that made no sense at all(see photo)....give me a functioning air conditioner and I would go back in a heartbeat.....until then I would only stay in the dead of winter. read more

Spent a few days here for New Year's. Second year in a row. I haven't tried the restaurant yet, but did have some snacks in the bar area which were very tasty. Bartenders are always very friendly. Our room was very comfortable. Love the heated bathroom floors. Close enough to walk to everything downtown. Just far enough away to make you feel like you're on a vacation, even if you're only 45 minutes from home. read more

DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE. If I could give this resort zero stars I would. We loved the resort. Have stayed here at least 15 times since late 2022 and have used the spa services multiple times and ate at the restaurant numerous times as well including special occassions and holidays. Recently, new employees and management have taken over. Peter at the front desk iS very rude and disrespectful. It is so sad to see this happen to what was Geneva's hidden gem. read more

After being on the road we stopped at Herrington Inn for a glass of wine and a little rest. Stayed longer than expected and enjoyed the house riesling and charcuterie board. Staff were really accommodating. Everyone very polite and eager to make our stop as comfortable as possible. We have been coming to the Herrington for 20 years to celebrate our anniversary and to get away, even though we are from Geneva (local). We have now moved, and I have stayed here 3 times this year when here on business and for a High School graduation ceremony. Oh, how the Once Great is now, at best, fair. Rooms are worn out, bedding old, towels tiny and spent, and the rooms are so cold they could double as a meat locker. The HVAC doesn't work, so we turned on the heat, and it's 88 Degrees outside. The refrigerator doesn't work, and I was told that it is meant to keep food at "Room Temperature", and is not meant to keep things cold..... Huh? Now they just called and they screwed up my reservation. Hot mess at the front desk. Local chains are cheaper, cleaner, and better run. Glad we moved, and this was a bad swan song for us here at the once great Herrington. read more

When I tell you, we was been stared at like we was from another planet, it was so unpleasant. We had to whisper at nifhr after coming back from dinner. I did not like that at all. I would probably come back with nust me and one other person. I did enjoy the massage, everyone from my group enjoyed they massage as well. My balcony room was really nice too. Deeply disappointed. Stopped for Sunday's brunch as we have at other times. It's a bit of a treat. We were shocked at how awe full the food was. It's bad diner food at a premium price. The eggs were cooked in that synthetic type of butter that left our mouths feeling oily and tasting bad. My wives took two bites and then stopped eating. The harsh browns were cold and uncooked. The fresh fruit was waxy and definitely not fresh particularly the strawberries. We are deeply disappoints and not sure what happened since the last time we were there. Will it be back for a while. The bathroom shower floor and ceiling had black mold. It was reported to management, but not treated. The stripping on the shower door was peeling off. Part of the toilet seat fixture was missing. The bed was BIZARRELY high, requiring a step stool. (Not good for someone who recently had surgery.) The mattress has a topper more suitable for a pet's bed. MSNBC was listed as a channel, but was not available. OF course, FOX NEWS was. There appears to be no housekeeping service on the weekends. (That is clearly stated in the room.) read more

Wow. I don't even know how to adequately describe this jewel of an Inn. We were here for one night for a work meeting... but I could have easily moved In. The staff was absolutely flawless in customer service, every employee I encountered. The common areas are beautifully adorned and you feel like you have stepped back in time. I was in room 221... and was beyond impressed. With a four post king bed and rich wood furniture my room was gorgeous with a balcony directly overlooking the river. The bathroom was gorgeous with a big whirlpool sunken tub. They have a 'bath menu' and I indulged in a basket being delivered to my room that included salts, oil, scrub, etc. Comfy robes and slippers in the closet... a full mini bar and local snacks were nice extras. The best part was having cold milk and a chocolate chip cookie in my room delivered during turn down service. I absolutely loved this 24 hour experience in Geneva and at the Herrington! read more

My partner and I have been wanting to come here for awhile, we've probably been planning this stay either last year or the year before but never got around to actually doing it. We decided to come here for a night to see what the hype is all about. This was an extremely last minute plan -- I literally book this on Friday afternoon, and it was for Saturday 4pm check in to Sunday 12 pm check out. They say go big or go home, and that's what I did -- I went with their 1 bedroom River suite where you get a jacuzzi, a balcony that you can step out and overlooks the Fox River which is stunningly beautiful. I decided to add on an enhancement that included chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of sparkling wine because why not. My only con so far is that the entrance to the Herrington Inn is not the easiest to figure out, we somehow found ourselves in their fine dining area which looked really pretty and for wedding type events, and their staff was really sweet and understanding, she showed me where the hotel entrance was (oops!). When we made it to our room, the enhancement was already waiting for us, which I can appreciate. They also have a restaurant inside the hotel by the reception area called Atwater's. At the end of the evening each day, they have a turndown service where they serve you homemade cookies and milk. The back of the cookie had a sticker explaining their tradition, it's because this location is rooted in history as Geneva's first dairy. The chocolate chip cookies were so fresh and soft, and it being paired with the ice cold milk was perfect. They also provide transportation from here to the Metra train station. I'd recommend Herrington Inn & Spa to anyone in the area looking for an experience / getaway with beautiful views of the Fox River. We're already thinking about making this an annual thing. read more

For our anniversary my wife and I booked a room and stayed at the Herrington. This Inn sits right along the Fox River with relaxing views. Our room was clean, well maintained and very charming. I wanted to treat my mother (73) and my disabled Aunt (74) for a birthday/Mothers day gift and purchased a large gift card due to the pricey rooms to the Herrington as they only get to see each other once every several years (my Aunt lives in Nevada). Reservations were made for adjoining rooms which are necessary and I confirmed just prior to them getting packed and in route to the hotel (no small feat) when they arrived to find out their rooms that were reserved for them were no longer available. They were very upset to say the least, once again they are elderly and not used to the poor business practices we see more often today. I called to speak to the manager Jesse who did not call back, I called several hours later and was passed on to another manager who told me redemption of the gift card for money obviously was not guaranteed. Why would we want to use it after what took place? Shame on you Herrington, That is not how you treat patrons, let alone the elderly and disabled, would you do the same to your Mom and Aunt? Not immediately refunding the gift card is the least worst thing they have done. Find another hotel or an Airbnb (probably alot cheaper) you will NOT be treated well at the Herrington. read more

It was nice but my room wasn't ready at check-in and then I accidentally left my favorite nightgown there (it was a gift from my husband and one of the expensive cotton comfy ones. sleeveless even. it was everything I need in a nightgown. But this isn't a nightgown review I guess.) and contacted them literally the day after I left to see if I could pay to get it shipped to me and they didn't even respond. This happened in like 2012 and I know leaving a review now is salty and petty but I just saw a picture of that nightgown again and I'm mourning so there you have it. read more

We have always loved the Herrington Inn and even had our wedding reception at its venue years ago , This weekend was even more memorable. We got to know the fabulous Kate who runs the bar. Not only was her service exceptional, she is a very knowledgeable barista and takes pride in her work..... plus she moved outside of her bar to help me with my broken puffy jacket zipper by using her "repair with a fork" tip. So kind! She draws a crowd of local followers in the bar and we can see why ! All other service from front desk to housekeeping to Atwater's dining was excellent Well done Herrington Inn! The hotel was outstanding in decor and services. The rooms were well decorated with comfortable beds, well appointed bathrooms and gorgeous grounds. We ate lunch in the restaurant - were pleasantly surprised to find foie gras on the menu - it was delicious. The continental breakfast in the lobby was a nice touch. The hotel driver drove us to and from dinner at night and church in the morning - all included - what a treat! We spent an excellent weekend here and will definitely come back. read more

We fell in love with this Inn as soon as we arrived! Private walkway and stairs so you didn't have to walk thru the lobby! The restaurant / bar continues to take up prices frequently and quantities are diminishing. For example, all of their cocktails are $15 or above and most of them are $17! The pour is definitely smaller than it used to be too. They charge an astronomical $67 for a 12 oz prime steak!! We used to frequent the restaurant weekly but not anymore. I took my 88 year old mother for a mother daughter get away break. I asked for a room to accommodate her needs. They said that,"Any room can be turned into a handicapped accessible room". My mother worked for years at Chicago Rehab Institute. She is extremely easy to please...as the doctors and therapists would agree. Did not expect such treatment from an establishment that prides itself on customer service. We were given a room where the suctioncup handles fell off in the shower. Instead of of support bars around the toilet, she was provided a flimsy shower seat in which to pull herself. As I reserved the room months in advanced, I asked the front desk staff to assist. The manager TOLD me that if I Couldn't be patient, go back to the room. I HAVE NEVER complained about a room in all of my senior years. It was classless and insulting... read more
