Cannot say enough about Hotel Frederick and its charm as an I renovated, but updated, hotel! What does that mean? As soon as you walk in the lobby of the Fredrick, you feel transferred back to and earlier, more classic but simple time. The decoration and old school/original design of the hotel really captured this clients' fascination. I am a sucker for classics! That said, the hotel DOES have all the amenities most other hotels have, including a restaurant, live music on the weekends and a coffee by day, alcohol bar by night! Okay, so many things to say about this place. I totally enjoyed myself, but openly admit that this place is not for everyone. If you want a hotel for just the sake of having somewhere to sleep, this might not be the place for you. It is very convenient to the Katy Trail and Main Street Boonville, but it's not a chain place, and it's a little more expensive. The place was built in 1905, and it must've been nice for a town this size then. Judging from the makeup of room 6, it looks like they combined two rooms to make the one and then added the bathrooms (rooms in older hotels were tiny by modern standards and often had shared bathrooms). I'm sure they did that to all the rooms. It must've been very pricy to renovate this place. There's little touches that give this place character. A mix of modern and antique which yes, if you're not in the right mindset, you might not like at all. Myself, I loved the old style wooden blinds, thought the bed was comfy, and enjoyed the very effective a/c in my room after a hot day. The main things to give people pause will be a slight mustiness (think old library), creaky wooden floors, small TVs, and inconsistent hot water. One night I just couldn't get it hot and the next, it was as hot as a modern house. Oh, and one bit of advice when picking the rooms. Think carefully about whether you want a shower or a bath, as it looks like the ones with the jacuzzi tubs do not have shower heads, so it's a bath or nothing. As for the staff, they were all pleasant enough, but they didn't give the kinda spiel about all the options that you get from a lot of places. What would probably be better (and this could be a Covid thing preventing it) would be a little pamphlet or plastic card detailing what is where, maybe a menu for the restaurant posted, just little things like that. I don't usually bother with hotel breakfasts, but detailing that would be a good thing to put on a pamphlet as well. You could even point out the little shops or restaurants around town there, which I'm sure would save the front desk some work as well. Regardless, if I come back this way, I will happily stay here again. You just don't see a lot of places like this anywhere. read more

We biked the Katy Trail and arrived here after 60 miles. Thank gawd for the bar:) cause it was glorious. This is a beautiful hotel and cares for the Katy Trail crowd. Dedicated rooms to store your bikes and super awesome people. The restaurant is a excellent. But the coolest part was the basement bar and live music. This and the nice selection of bourbon was the perfect end to a great day! read more

Disappointing visit. We were big fans of the Fred but this is our last visit. We discovered this morning that we didn't have hot water to take a shower with. When we were checking out the hotel clerk was seated on the couch in the lobby and didn't bother to get up. She stated you can go ahead and go then. I mentioned to her that we didn't have hot water, and she didn't apologize for this inconvenience. Instead, after a long pause, she said she thought she might have the housekeeper check it out later. After I left the building, I discovered I still had the room key in my pocket because she never asked me for the key back. The previous owners put a lot of TLC into designing this formerly amazing hotel but it clearly has had better days since their departure. read more

A beautiful hotel with all the original, historic details still shining bright. Despite the beauty and convenience along our Katy Trail bike tour, I've got to say the lack of quality service and hospitality here made this stay just OK. After riding 78 miles, we were a tad weary to say the least. We were eager to check in and get situated, but the crew working wasn't anywhere to be found. We waited and waited, and then finally had to start going around asking people if they worked there to check us in and they sort of rushed through it and seemed put out. They also have a system where you have to hand in your key before going outside which is fine, but a tad difficult because the staff was absentee or on the phone so much that there was no urgency. The room was nice with multiple beds, and an old shower with not much pressure (to be expected in a unique place like this). There were a few spiders here and there and my bed was slanted as if the mattress needed to be turned. Lastly, the bike storage situation... They told us they'd lock them in the basement and they weren't kidding. It's like our bikes were being kidnapped in an old cellar. No bike racks, no anything -- just an empty room and some drywall with no lights. They didn't have a system in place so technically anyone else with a bike could come in there and wheel out multiple bikes and be on their way. I suggest something similar to their key system where you get a card that they write, say, "blue and white bike" to match with what you bring in, then have you turn that in each time. Our Revival service was truly terrible as well (more on that in a separate review) and on the whole it felt like we were just in the way of everyone here, despite paying over $200 on a seemingly light weekend for them. They also didn't tell us about the continental breakfast until we asked and caught it as it would down. Side note, they put the "hard" in hard-boiled eggs there.. Not sure I'd rush to spend the money to come back here, but it certainly is a beautiful, historic place on the river. read more

We decided to stay here for one night while moving across the country, and it was such a unique experience! The hotel is full of character and charm but still comfortable for someone with a modern preference. It was between Hotel Frederick and Holiday Inn for us... Hotel Frederick was more interesting and more affordable on a Friday night! The bar even had an awesome all female band playing. Only bad part is we were only there for one evening. The staff was superb, they went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of - in both the hotel and the restaurant. Their prices are superb - in both the hotel and the restaurant. The food was fabulous! We had a hard time selecting what we wanted because everything sounded good. Good variety of food to pick from, and some unique selections. Was really looking forward to eating at the Fred it was our first time, and the food was terrible. They didn't seem that busy when we arrived at 6pm, but it took over an hour to get our food which would have been fine if our food was not cold when we received it. Two people at our table even got soup before our dinner and the soup was cold as well. Our waitress never came back to check to see if we need any more drinks. The only time we seen our waitress was to take our order, fill our water up once, and to give us our check. My dinner was suppose to come with Garlic bread I did not get that, and again our waiter never checked with us to see how everything was or if we need anything. I had to go find someone and ask to get my garlic bread. Had heard such great things, but after having poor service and cold food would not recommended going. read more

Great historical building to be able to stay in. The staff is one of the most friendliest staffs I've ever experienced while staying in a hotel. Nora and John are the absolute best! We ate in the restaurant and the hamburgers are AMAZING. They have a bar in the basement called Brickroom with live bands and a fun atmosphere. We booked this hotel for my daughters wedding for family and friends. The rehearsal dinner and wedding started at 4pm so we ask in advance if we could check in early and we were told yes. When I personally went to check in on the day of rehearsal the lady at the front desk was very rude. My mother even heard her talking about me very distastefully on the phone to someone later on during the day. Our room AC did not work well so we ask to possibly move rooms. The one sweet young girl that works there moved us with no problem. However the next morning the same woman from check in was heard again talking about my husband and I by our youngest son because the AC was not working well in the room we were moved to. She said if we asked to be moved again to be told that they were fully booked. The front desk staff other than the young girl that works at the hotel was absolutely rude and blamed us for their mistakes, and short comings. Very disappointing because it is absolutely beautiful. A lovely hotel built in 1906. Warmly greeted by reception after easily parking in front. Walk easily to river - bikes for rent in front of hotel. The hotel is loaded with antiques but has the comforts of a more modern hotel. Nice continental breakfast included - area safe- we accidentally left our car door with all our luggage and positions inside for a good 30 minutes or more. Thankfully all intact! read more

The Hotel Frederick building was built in 1905. It's a really nice change from your traditional hotel. We stayed here after the Mizzou Homecoming festivities. The rooms feel very solid. Our room #27 was spacious, clean, had brick walls, wood floors, a king size bed, a second twin sofa type bed (our 15 yr old used and was very comfortable). Our king bed was very comfy.... linens were fresh and bed was nicely made. The bathroom is spacious with lots of towels. They also give you slivers of the Zum Bar soaps to use. Just cute quaint touches. There is a continental breakfast and coffee. This is a restaurant and a gift shop. It was a good 35 min drive from Columbia, MO but I'm glad we came here. It's situated just off the Missouri River and right by the Katy Trail. Lots of bikers cone here to rest their bodies before heading out again on the trail. I truly enjoyed this hotel. read more

This boutique hotel did not disappoint. First, if you are riding the Katy Trail, this hotel is literally right off the trail, literally across the street. There isn't much to do (or anything open) I'm this quaint town. People are SUPER FRIENDLY. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant called THE FRED. There is not really anything to eat in town so we deferred to here. I am so happy we did because it was amazing. We had the fish tacos (the tortilla was buzzard it was fried) which I didn't love, but we also had a salad with shrimp and the pork chop. The wines were super reasonable at $8 and they were GOOD. It was our first trip to Boonville. From the moment we walked inside we were overwhelmed by the beauty and authenticity of the hotel. Zach and Holly showed much hospitality and friendliness. I chose Hotel Frederick because of Boonville's location on the 2017 eclipse center line and because the hotel reminds me of the wonderful old Trost & Trost hotels that dot West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. And sure enough...with it's beautiful tiled lobby, original fixtures, and turn-of-the century design (that would be the 19th to the 20th century), Hotel Frederick makes for a charming place to spend a few nights. The staff is helpful, and the rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. Not so great is the fact that the recently renovated north wing lacks air conditioning in the hallways, and that our room was oppressively musty. We thought that airing the room out by leaving the windows open overnight would help, but no such luck. The humidity and smell remained for the entirety of our stay. That said...if you're going to be in Boonville, a charming town by the way, Hotel Frederick is the place to stay. Just make a point of booking a room in the main building. read more

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for one night during a friend's wedding and were so impressed with the place we decided to return two weeks later for a full weekend. The hotel has a ton of charm. It's in an old, historic brick building and reminds me of a turn of the century boarding house. The hotel is situated next to the Missouri river and is right across the street from the Katy Trail (excellent for biking) which stretches across the entire state. The staff is very friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating. The restaurant is top notch- especially for the small town and the owner and chef are both very friendly adding a personal touch. The bar has a variety of drinks and specialty cocktails. The continental breakfast had a good variety of options including hard boiled eggs for some added protein! I loved this hotel for the hospitality and old-world charm mixed with the bougie treats such as the fancy restaurant and fancy drinks. I couldn't ask for a better combo. If you're looking for a modern hotel where everything is new- you'll be disappointed, but if you are actually looking for an experience- This is Your Place! read more

Beautiful hotel for a little getaway. The rooms were amazing. We loved our room and bathroom (Rm 15), although we did switch our room from one that was a little bit awkward seeing as how the bathroom walls are glass (Rm 12). Also..the walls are a little thin as our neighbors clearly demonstrated for us...just FYI for those going for the romantic get away thing. We went on an off season time for the town, but were perfectly happy spending most of our time relaxing in the room with a jet tub and cable. Everything from the down comforters to the prints on the wall, from the cool antique furniture to the beautiful rugs all made for a really cozy stay that was different from your typical overly contemporary hotel. Two things I hate to see a hotel cheap out on is soap and coffee. This place goes above and beyond carrying Indigo Wild Zum soap and Rosterie coffee, both local to Kansas City. The continental/ complementary breakfast was surprisingly good. Many options for food and drinks plus fresh Rosterie coffee. You can take things back up to your room, meet some of other people staying in the hotel, or wonder around to some of the other room filled with beautiful huge plants (someone on staff has a crazy green thumb) There are a few reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars. First, I was a little disappointed with the hotel restaurant. The type of food and the atmosphere led me to think I was getting really quality food and it just wasn't up to par for the prices. Not to mention they were "out" of several things we ordered on the menu. I also think an $18 brunch buffet is nuts no matter what kind of food you have sitting under those warmers. Not even the bar food was that good. Second, the staff at the front desk seemed a little bit unenthusiastic about being there, and that is the first person you encounter when you walk in. We also inquired about things to do around the town including antique shops and the dude seemed annoyed that he had to put down his smart phone to engage with us. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner tonight. The hotel is historic and beautiful but we had a terrible experience in the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine (that we have had many times) and when they brought it out to taste it tasted a little off. The bartender noticed and i said "it's probably fine". She poured us each a small glass but after i took another sip we told the waitress the wine tasted like it had gone bad. She talked to the manager and came back to say we could buy another bottle of wine full price but we would still have to pay half price for that bottle because it was half gone (which it wasn't) and we said no. She came back again and we told her she could clear the bottle and our glasses because it wasn't that we had changed our minds about the wine, but that it had gone bad and wasn't drinkable. She brought us our bill and they charged us full price for a bad bottle of wine that we did not drink. I would not eat here again based off of this experience and complete lack of customer service. Our steaks were just ok, they may have been better if we'd had some potable red wine to go with it. read more

Jeremiah, the bartender, mixes up a terrific Manhattan and our room was clean, comfortable and pretty. I am a big fan of local KC brands like Indigo Wild Zum products and Roasterie coffee and was pleased to see both of those represented here at the Hotel Frederick. The good: the restaurant downstairs and the lobby bar are both absolutely great. That's really the cause for my four stars; the service and the food were both top-notch and it reminded me of some of the better old hotels I stayed in when traveling in Europe. The bad: the beds are old, the wood floors are VERY creaky and I didn't sleep much or well because of that, anyone walks around in the room to either side of you and it's Hammer Horror level sound-effect creeeeaaaaak creeaeaaaaaeeek, the linens are really just OK but I wouldn't call them luxurious by any stretch, the decor in my room was an eyesore (amateur art at the level of "talented high schooler"), the whole hotel reeks of Zum soaps (a heavily oiled soap that make Lush soaps seem downright sophisticated by comparison - they're widely available in grocery stores so I'm not sure why the hotel makes such a big deal out of them, I'd much rather have had a regular shower gel that wouldn't leave me reeking of essential oils, I had to skip my perfume that day because it would have clashed badly with the soap fragrance). The shower had no curtain and the "rain shower" head was mounted at least three feet above me, so it was a long and shivering experience to shampoo and rinse. I imagine the water started out warm but by the time it reached me it sure wasn't. Hot water out of the shower is a non-starter, it had one of those self-heater things instead of coming from a water boiler. Tepid is about as good as you're going to get, and the hotter you try to get it, the lower the flow, which is already pretty sparse in a "rain shower" format. That's the room in a nutshell. Staff wise, there was a guy who was pretty good - a normal, pleasant, professional, competent, unobtrusive, helpful person. And then there was... Something out of a David Lynch movie. A heavily tattooed obese woman also worked at the front desk, only smiled when the guy was in the vicinity, scowled at everyone else like they were shit on her shoe, while wearing trashy low-cut outfits to show off her chest tattoo (which said "kiss me and you'll know why I'm so important" which made me feel like throwing up in my mouth because 1) omg seriously and 2) her face looked like a punched-in ball of bread dough that got a drag queen makeover by Mac and 3) each time my eyes involuntarily scanned the jussive "kiss me" on her massive prow the concept just made me feel ill). Despite the fact that she looked like a trailer park manager (at best) who feels superior to the lesser rednecks in her domain, she was super duper snotty and condescending and looked down her nose at guests while carrying on in some kind of superior lady of the manor routine - I suppose she thinks that's how fancy people behave. It was kind of fascinating to watch, though it's the antithesis of how the front desk at actual hotels behave. Much less luxury hotels, which would no more permit that sort of behavior from the front desk than slap incoming guests in the face with a fish. I knew when I saw her that the website of the hotel had likely put a polish on the hotel that wasn't going to be present in real life. I don't expect staff to be obsequious, but at least professional and neutral rather than "weirdly snobby redneck dressed like a hooker" would be great if you're going to charge upwards of $150 a night. I hate to focus so much on that chick but it was super weird and each time I had to interact with her coming or going it felt surreal because she was just so inexplicably unpleasant and hard on the eyes. I did kind of wish I'd just stayed anywhere else due to the noisy floors, not particularly comfortable room, and the hit I took to my mood every time I had to interact with the desk, but then I wouldn't have had the absolutely amazing dinner in the hotel restaurant. I had the seafood pasta and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The salad preceding it was amazing. The slice of cake for dessert was light and airy and rich at the same time. The service was top-notch; unobtrustive but attentive, friendly but not forced, and composed. It was a wonderful meal. I'd say that the restaurant is well-worth a drive in to Boonsville from Columbia, particularly since the drive via the countryside is very pretty. There are probably better options for lodging. I'd love to see the hotel thrive so the restaurant can survive - not ALL of the rooms have the terrible shower that mine did. Some of them probably have newer beds that aren't saggy and crunchy at the same time. You can bring your own toiletries if you'd rather not be heavily Zum'd. If you're a heavy sleeper who isn't easily awoken you'll be fine. And maybe you won't have to deal with the lemonpuss human billboard to her own inexplicable vanity at the front desk. read more

A very friendly young lady at reception kindly showed us some of the bedrooms. We ate shrimp and grits - delicious, Welsh rarebit - so-so. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. We were guests of a wedding on April 14, 2018 which was to be held at the Hotel Frederick. There were several issues which made the event unacceptable. First, the bride and groom had discussed with the management that they wanted the actual ceremony to be held on the front steps of the hotel. This was all the plan until two weeks before the wedding and at that time the management told them they could not have the wedding there because it was prom weekend and prom goers would be coming to have pictures made on the front steps during the scheduled time of the wedding. This made the bride and groom scramble to find another venue within two weeks of their wedding! The whole reason they booked the Hotel Frederick was to have everything all in one venue. Of course, this made an additional expense that they had not counted on. The second issue was the price of the rooms. Although the rooms had been renovated and part of the charm is a quaint, historic hotel, frankly, the rooms were very overpriced for what you got. In fairness, the rooms were clean and tastefully decorated. The biggest complaint was the entree for the reception meal. When the bride and groom had their sampling, all of the entrees were generous portions. At the meal itself, the portions were tiny! My plate had not even close to a half portion of the sea bass entree and others at my table could barely find any chicken in the tarragon chicken entree. Vegetables were to be served with the sea bass and, again, the portions were miserly at best. Some guests were served entrees which were only lukewarm. For the price per plate, this was unacceptable. I feel the presentation at the sampling was misleading at best and dishonest at worst. So, just beware if you choose to book the Hotel Frederick for your event. read more

We stayed at Hotel Frederick on a Friday night after a day riding on the Katy Trail. The location is super convenient if you're passing through on a bike - right off the trail at the end of the bridge into Boonville. The lady working at the front desk was very friendly and opened up the basement storage area for us to store our bikes. We were the only ones with bikes on that day, but I would have liked to have a little more security for our gear rather than just being locked in an open room in the basement, like maybe some sort of claim ticket system. Our room was small but comfortable. The bathroom was nicely appointed with a jetted tub. We looked at photos of the rooms before we booked to make sure we didn't get one with the glass wall bathrooms (too weird!!). The toiletries and handmade soaps were nice. We did not eat in the restaurant, but we did enjoy a few drinks in the bar downstairs. The prices were reasonable and the drinks were well made. We would stay here again if we are biking through Boonville. read more

We loved this historic hotel! It is quaint and lovely. After riding 42 miles on the Katy Trail that day, we easily biked to this hotel and were able to relax instantly. We stayed here on Memorial Day weekend for the Pedaler's Jamboree. I had been offered a choice of two rooms and chose the more expensive of the two because of the jet tub. After riding 30 miles from Columbia on a bike in the rain and mud I was sure glad that I had made that decision! My fiancé and I could not wait to hit that jet tub before dinner (we had made reservations at the restaurant there and were meeting some friends). When we go to the room, we tried to turn on the jet tub, but couldn't figure out how to get the water running. Why would that be? We are both intelligent people who have managed to stay alive into our 40's. Surely we could figure out how to get the water running! We stared at the mechanism every which way until we realized that the handle had been completely ripped out of the wall mechanism. We immediately called downstairs. Jeff came up and asked if we were sure that we hadn't seen a handle. We were quite sure that we hadn't. We probably would have remembered something like that. He left and came back with another handle that didn't fit the tub. He left again. We waited. Dinner reservations in the very near future. The clock ticking.... I called downstairs. Carol answered the phone. She didn't know what to do. Could I please hold on? Sure. Waiting.....waiting..... A man picks up. He is Jeff. He tells me that he can't do his job if he is on the phone with me. (I had never asked to speak to Jeff for the record). Eventually we give up and take a shower. I called down again and pointed out to Carol and subsequently Jeff that I had paid extra for the room with the jet tub. Silence. Crickets chirping. A strange whirring sound as I hear thoughts trying to form in their heads. But to no avail. They can not come up with the correct way to handle that very difficult dilemma. I also realize that although the staff there was incompetent, we really like the building. It is beautiful. We would like to stay there again next year for the same event. Surely there will be more competent employees next year. I point out that they never took our reservation for next year (like they had done for the folks in front of us in line to check in). They inform me that the hotel is already booked for next year. Upon checkout, a new employee. His name is Evan. I get excited. Maybe there will be some reason here! I explain all of the issues. He smirks. Yes. He smirks as I tell him that the only recourse I have is to post reviews. I ask to speak to the owner. He gives me the general manager's card. I again ask to speak to the owner and he refuses to give me contact info. Of note, later on I hear a story from another guest at the hotel regarding how Evan was doing nothing behind the desk and ignored them as they tried to get his attention allowing Carol to finish up with what she was doing and eventually get to their needs. After the trip, I eventually speak to Holly, the general manager. She seems to be reasonable. I relay my story and she apologizes. She gives us the room for free, and by that time I feel that this is very reasonable. I point out the confusion about getting us a room for next year. She informs me that a mistake was made and that we were not offered a room for next year as other guests were. She tells me that I will be on the waiting list. I ask her where we would be on the waiting list and she tells me toward the top. I ask what number on the list and this seems to be as if I asked her exactly how the universe was formed. She doesn't recognize my confusion. She says we are toward the top. I then start getting frustrated again. A list is a number of connected items or names written or printed consecutively, typically one below the other. That's not my definition. Look it up. A list is not an amorphous abstract concept! The whole experience borders on ridiculous. Again, I have no way of letting the owner know what is happening in his hotel. I told myself I would give this a couple of months and then write an open letter to the owner on Yelp and Trip Advisor and hope that he sees it or that one of his friends points it out to him. If I were the owner, I would want to know who was taking care of my hotel when I was away. read more
