Absolutely perfect! We stayed in a Jr suite with an amazing full ocean view. The room was spotless and the front office staff was super friendly. This was our first trip to Catalina and we did a lot of research to find the best hotel. We found it! While bumming around the town, we looked at other hotels for next time. Nothing else came close to the experience offered here. The rooftop jacuzzi was intimate and had a spectacular view of everything. When we came back to the hotel after riding a golf cart around the island, there was champagne waiting for us at our room door. Absolutely charming hotel and the shopping/Game Center downstairs has great stores and dining options. It was a perfect stay.... EXCEPT we had to leave the day before the Catalina f'ing Wine Mixer!!! read more

The place is simply put perfectly located and very clean! I've stayed all over this island and hotel metropolitan is by far the best I've stayed at! The staff- workers and everyone were fantastic! We will be staying here from now on after 40 years of coming to the island I'll be going nowhere else but here! We got in our room 3 hr early ???? We 80% of the time bring the yacht? But now? I think I'll save 3,000 bucks and do the flyer and hotel metropolitan! Big rooms with two queens and newly renovated bathrooms so nice to see this! We will head to my favorite Steve's steak house and have another fantastic weekend on the island! You gotta stay here if you're coming to Avalon! read more

One may be a bit harsh - really 1 1/2 to 2 would be my honest review for our specific experience and here's why: 1) Right off the bat, when talking to the front desk associate on the phone, she was not overly pleasant with me when I inquired about an upgrade. I asked a couple of questions and she just had that impatient/annoyed tone to her voice. When I asked if they could do anything special for my husband's 40th bday (it was on the day they arrived to the hotel) she said they could have champagne waiting for us. Awesome! Was it there when we got to the room? NO. They admittedly forgot. 2) Even though they weren't near capacity, we got a late check in and an early check out. 3) The entire flooring near the bathroom and pretty much throughout the room was water damaged and uneven. It desperately needed replacing- I've attached photos. The manager's response was something along the lines of - we just haven't gotten around to it yet. Also, the bathtubs need refinishing - they are awful. 4) The jacuzzi doesn't have a lock for guests to use so locals/people not staying there are free to use it as well which is what happened when we were there. Grimy and dirty . HORRIBLE CUSTOMER service and hospitality. The "manager" aka front desk receptionist, Asia has NO CLUE what actual hotel service offers to guests and just rambles off meaningless words like a robot. Bugs all over the hotel and an inch of dust under the bed. Scared to bring home bed bugs. I would NEVER stay at this hotel again....makes sense that it was the ONLY hotel with rooms available on the island. Hotel has a COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE front desk staff with unintelligible explanations from robots quoting "PROTOCOL" which is an oxymoron coming from hospitality. Vanessa at the front desk is absolutely horrible. I don't know why she's working in customer service. She said she couldn't hold my bags even though I'm a booked guest. Then when I was checking in she said no room changes are allowed even if we pay for it. Which is a complete lie. The rooms are okay at best, very old and dated. No views. Very small. Lovely Hotel! We came here for our honeymoon. Got the honeymoon package. Great options included in the package to great restaurants and attractions. We also got the custom robes and in-room continental breakfast, 2 trays of fresh food and snacks delivered to our room promptly on time every day! We loved the decor of our room, very modern and comfy. Comfy beds. Great view from the balcony. We didn't hear the neighboring rooms, however the jacuzzi tube was a little loud.. The quality of service was great and they helped us very quickly. We cancelled another hotel for the night prior to our stay here due to mold exposure and poor service and this hotel was very understanding to the urgency to our situation that they allowed us early check in and sanitized the room as a precautionary measure. Buyer beware if you are booking reservations. Just called the hotel to nook two rooms snd the woman who answered could give me availability and asked i give exact dates over a 6 week period. Pretty cumbersome so I went back to the website snd booked one room at a cost of $1400.00 for 2 nights. When i could not find the second room with the same views i called the hotel and the same unhelpful woman answered and told me she cannot give me a second room with the view. I asked her to cancel the first room since I cannot get a second. This was all within 5 mins of booking the first room online. I WAS CHARGED $$150 to cancel the room when 1) they would not help me book anything on the phone and 2) i could not book 2 rooms at the sane time. Super disappointing service and policies for a higher end hotel. Customer service should not be associated with this hotel. read more

We stayed at Hotel Metropole for about 5 days. We had the medium suite oceanfront with jacuzzi tub and fireplace. We absolutely loved it. Was awesome to dive each morning and come back to such a nice room. The view of the boardwalk and ocean was super quaint and allowed us to enjoy just hanging on the balcony and relaxing rather than staying out. A few small shops downstairs make it easy for morning coffee and access to the town. We will be back! read more

Unfortunately our experience was sub par; 25th wedding anniversary and I decided after a lot of research to book the VIP room for two nights, I called to ask for champagne service every day (did not receive anything), room bed was horrible (frame was broken or just worn out, we had to prop up one side so our head wasn't lower than our feet), no utensils for coffee, really noisy A/C which means coupled with the loud street activities at night make for a super fantastic experience. Long story short, for the price we paid (~$700 per night) one would think we'd have received 5 star service. I'm so disappointed by the experience that we will probably never visit Catalina again, God that's sad but I'm back on mainlandand irritated when I wrote this so be warned. read more

Stayed here just recently for 3 nights for my wedding. I had the full suite. It was beautiful with a king sized bed, a large pull out couch, a couple upholstered chairs, large ottoman and a spacious balcony facing the ocean. There was a keurig machine, mini fridge, hair dryer, jacuzzi tub and general toiletries you'd see at any hotel (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion). Even though housekeeping was suspended due to covid, we had no problem getting what we needed. This place is a 15-20 min walk from the port, not super tiring and luckily no hill to walk up. This hotel has its own courtyard with shops, a beauty salon and restaurants (Cafe Metropole, M restaurant to name a couple). I had the best time! It was a perfect stay. read more

Very cute cottage like hotel. Modern decor. Super clean. Loved the location. It's right in the middle of Avalon where all the fun stores & attractions are. Guest service are nice, liked the continental breakfast, really cool that they offer that. However with all the nice stuff this hotel has there were a few things that weren't so nice. For starters it's very nosiey. There r hard wood floors and the ceilings are high so there's a lot of echo. Also, u can hear everything going on outside. People coming back to their rooms super late and loud. U can hear their entire conversations as u try to sleep. Sure the beds r comfy but what good is the when u have a giant port hole that lets all the sun light in. No sleeping in that's for sure. Idk about u, but when I go on vacay or even a quick weekend getaway I look forward to sleeping in & taking my time to get up. read more

Booked the VIP Ocean View Suite for a few days and the room was spectacular. Perfect for 4 with lots of leg room and privacy for the master bedroom. Hotel Metrepole also has lots of history and was close to EVERYTHING on Catalina. Pros: OCEAN VIEWS? Yes. 1.5 Baths with His & Her sinks Robes 1 King 1 Pullout Couch 3 Balconies 1 Mini fridge Private breakfast for Suites Cons: Terrible WiFi Loud noises echoed from the streets. My husband and daughter (named after Catalina!) were attempting to bring my parents and unfortunately our 4 month old very got sick - turned into a little bit of a cluster. Originally we had booked through booking.com (postpartum brain fart) and will never use them again. LUCKILY I was able to finally call the hotel myself and speak with a Lovely gentleman, Cody. He was professional and kind and very understanding and accommodating. Just the interaction on the phone call alone will prompt me to only stay here when on island moving forward!! read more

I rarely give bad reviews but this was just one thing after another. Not thrilled with my experience here. Started with an hour late check-in after we had been told that day it would definitely be ready. We were promised robes, slippers and champagne in our room on arrival (it was part of what we paid for)...didn't happen either. And took 2 hours to finally get to us after being told it would be 5 minutes (3 times). Finally got to our room and the person on the balcony beside us was smoking. Filling our room with smoke. We chose this hotel because it's a smoke-free property including the balcony, and we were assured this would not be an issue. Cigarette smoke triggers my migraines hence why we check on smoke-free and call ahead...we did our part. They continued to smoke the whole time we were there, even leaving a coffee top ash try on balcony full of butts, even after we informed management several times and they said they would handle it. Not to mention these guests were very rude and blatantly breaking the rules. Did I mention we try to leave our room and the door is so stuck we can't get out. HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. They come to "fix" it and we still can't get out without pulling the handle down hard twice and then pulling so hard to open it that it hurt my shoulder. BE WARNED...which I wish I had been...very loud street noise, golf carts all hours and drunk, loud people screaming into the late hours of the night. I mean you hear every unintelligent word they are saying! Staying off the Main Street next time. Did I mention the spotlight of a light from the restaurant across the street, right into our view and room. Oh and the screen door on the balcony was broken. Geez...enough is enough. And the endless ants EVERYWHERE. And we didn't even leave any food or drinks out. We tried to be understanding but wish we would have known the many kinks at this place. I gave it two stars because of the nice ladies at the front desk. Won't stay here again. Some of these are simple fixes but they need to get to work and actually fix them and enforce their own rules and provide what they promise!!! P.S. Just realized the money they promised to reimburse us as a token for all of the trouble, was put on someone else's card. Now we know why we hadn't seen the reimbursement. Geez! We understand to a point. They were understaffed and the COVID issues...but then they should not have fully booked their hotel. They also should not charge and present as a certain kind of upscale hotel if that is not what they intend to give. We were coming for the experience they advertised not what we got. Luckily we were in the ocean snorkeling most of the time so we still love Catalina and are grateful for the island. Will probably Airbnb next time. read more

Upon check-in: Bathroom had 4 dead bugs on ceiling. 3 black hairs on toilet (even though it had a sanitary paper banner on the lid). A harsh vinegar smell that took about 2 hours to aerate with window and door open. Requested someone to address that smell and the urine smell near door. They did not. So they offered me a bottle of Febreeze, did it myself. Toilet flusher didn't work and took worker 2 trips to fix and it still didn't work right. Alarm batteries were failing (in lobby and our room; had that one replaced) We were a party of 4 but were only offered 2 beach towels. Quality of service was very poor. Rates were high considering the WiFi in the room was too weak to use, spa was closed and breakfast was not being served (COVID) but no one advised on these factors prior to arrival. Front desk agent advised they clean with vinegar. Vinegar does not kill viruses, especially coronavirus; so I'm concerned they are not doing their best for cleaning in these time. Front desk agent would not switch our room at check in as they were sold out, yet had many arrivals the next day. I asked to speak to a manager 2 times and no one every reached out. Disappointed for our first trip to Avalon. read more

Check-in/Lobby: We walked from the Catalina Express pier with our luggage & it was approximately a 10min easy walk. They will store your luggage for you, if needed. However, it is a short uphill walk to the hotel, once you turn on Whitely Rd. We got there an hour early & our rooms were ready, Score!! Checkin was a breeze, since I was already charged for the room. The continental breakfast is served in a tiny area off of the lobby, it's an outside alcove type area that's covered. Rooms: the rooms are very nice & have a aesthetic/clean fill to it. The room was a king sized bed & a super small balcony with partial water views & hardwood floors. It had two chairs & a table on it. I wished the sliding door had a screen on it, to keep it open over night for the cool breeze. The room had one of the biggest bathtubs I've ever seen in a hotel & not being a jacuzzi. Due to the height of the tub it's not handicap friendly; or if you have mobility issues & aren't able raise your leg over the ~2ft ledge. We were in room 407, next to the elevator & around the corner from the roof top hot tub; which was used nightly. It's a super small one, just FYI. However, it's pretty neat since the evenings we were there they played music in the courtyard, behind the hotel. Perfect. Breakfast: This consisted of: coffee, tea (kureg & thermos), prepackaged cereal/oatmeal, fruit (bananas, strawberries, grapes), OJ, pastries & yogurt. No water though, strange. If I could give this a minus star, I would. Catalina is not St Tropez or the Madlives, my standards and expectations were already adjusted and accounted for and lowered to minimum. But this was rock bottom. The hotel has zero service, and it was a bait and switch making everything about the stay just horrific. Apart from the central location, nothing is worth the stay here. Beds are uncomfortable, the heater wall unit goes off and on loudly all night, there is construction material all over in the hallways worse than a third world war site, and the worst part: there is NO breakfast. Unless you call styrofoam cups, cold coffee, set up on plastic tables bunch of Costco bagels and fruit put in the foyer (not even the lobby) and you have to come stand in the lobby precariously balancing a cafeteria tray with horrible food on your hand a reasonable way to start your day. They say breakfast is included: what breakfast???? Where do you sit? No tables, nothing. If you are including a breakfast: include it, don't present this half ass nonsense. The hotel hasn't responded to our feedback: clearly a historically winning combination of reciprocity, care, and outstanding service! If you need to change your ferry tickets, sorry, hard out of luck trying to get any help from the front desk which helped you book it in the first place. Do not stay here. There are other properties that had it together, and provide hospitality at the level of the money you are paying. read more

This is a very nice hotel located in the heart of Avalon, I was very happy with where it is located at because of all the places I wanted to go to was all walking distances. I was between delicious food and work. I was here for a work conference training thing and I bought my bf, he was the hotel bae while I learned/worked. Even tho the hotel is very nice and modern, very clean, has a lot of friendly staff, there is just one major issue: the noisy at night. No no, I am not talking about some kind of horror flick kind of thing, its just noise that their staff makes at night, the walking, shuffling and random microwaving. YES, microwaving, my room is #214, its literally NEXT to registration, right in front of the sink and microwave. And it wasn't just microwaving from the staffs, but from other guests as well. Alright, I am guilt of it too, I used the microwave a few times. But I mean, having access to a microwave is awesome, is where they placed it, IN FRONT OF ANOTHER GUEST'S ROOM, that's what pains me. Room: My room was spacious, but it felt like it was missing another table in the room, the placement was a bit off, maybe it was just me. Our room was very tidy and clean. Our bathroom was awesome, it has a heater built in, it was perfect for you step out the shower. You would feel like a rotisserie chicken stepping into a halogen oven. Timer set at 15 mins, max! Complimentary Continental Breakfast: Every morning they would have a nice spread set up for their hotel guests to enjoy, not going to lie, I enjoyed it way too much. I would take extra trips for coffee and oatmeal, I love them both dearly. The set up is also very clean and neat as well, their staff would come back to clean up any messes that was made. Price: Reasonable for what they charged my work, LOL. My stay was discounted due to my work function, but with its normal rate I would stay here as well. I am actually looking to come back in the Spring or Summer of this year. Staff: They were all around very nice and friendly, super helpful. Checking in and out both were super easy. Whenver we needed something, they were available to help right away Overall, my experiences here is wonderful minus the midnight microwave. I'm super late with this review, but I surprised my wife with a romantic getaway trip back in April 2018, to Catalina Island. We first flew with IEX helicopters, which was amazing the way and affordable. We then took a shuttle van to our hotel. The staff was truly amazing. We arrived, the room was perfect and with a view of the city below us and THE OCEAN!!!! We also scheduled massages with them as well. They were informative on places to eat, transportation, excursions, and provided their own personal preferences to enhance our experience on the island. GOOD BUT NEEDS AN UPDATE We stayed here on a previous visit to Catalina several years ago, so we tried it again. It's conveniently located at the far end of the waterfront strip of hotels and restaurants, within easy walking distance of everything in Avalon. We were a little disappointed that this time the place seemed a bit dated, with signs of deferred maintenance (like wallpaper beginning to peel in places and bathroom fans that clattered). Also, it seemed odd that, with COVID mask mandates having been lifted, the hotel still was not providing maid service or resuming their continental breakfasts. But the staff were very nice, the bed was comfortable, and the price was reasonable. Note for disabled visitors: The hotel''s one accessible room is a bit noisy, located directly off the main entrance and loading area, and with some kind of mechanical sound going on much of the time. read more

To celebrate our anniversary my wife and I decided to stay a night at Catalina Island. I presume like others we hunted the various websites and travel sites for a good hotel. My wife picked Hotel Metropole. This hotel was easy to get to, attractive, and clean. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our room was nice and we had a balcony view. The continental breakfast was nice and for me breakfast coffee is a necessity, and their coffee was perfect. But I would like to make a few suggestions to hotel management. I suggest they have an easy chair to sit and watch TV in, and a desk to put our electronics on. Not deal breakers and we would stay there again. read more

Just had a very sweet and romantic getaway to Catalina Island and of course we had to stay at our favorite hotel, the Metropole! Even during these times, the hotel and staff went above and beyond to make it a memorable stay. From the extra cleaning procedures to the friendliness and accessibility of the staff, the trip was one for the record books. Update: see hotel owners response below. This app isn't blocked anywhere else - I've used it in many places. What they call "industry standard" is unfortunately not true. --- The short story: This hotel blocks LGBTQ dating apps on its wifi. It does not block other dating apps like Tinder. When confronted with this bigotry, the hotel management did nothing and shifted responsibility to their IT person. No apology or recognition of this bigotry was made to me, a hotel guest last week. If you support LGBTQ rights you should avoid this hotel. --- The longer story: I stayed at the hotel last week with a group and checked my dating app but saw the IP was blocked by the hotel's wifi for "explicit/mature content." I politely told the front desk about this and said my app isn't explicit. The front desk person was very nice but did not know the reason why it would be blocked. This dating app is commonly used in the gay community. The front desk staffer said that apps like Tinder work. I asked the front desk staffer if they understood how blocking lgbtq content would make me feel unsafe at the hotel and not welcome and asked if they could pass this along to the management. Seems like the front desk staffer didn't know this was a thing until I brought it up. On our way out to dinner, I asked the staffer if he had heard back from management (who was off the island until Monday). They had and said that the manager said it was the IT person's decision to block these websites. The hotel's manager didn't call or email me to discuss this. I didn't ask to be contacted outright, but this is pretty blatant bigotry, and if the hotel understood their actions they would have contacted me or otherwise work to make me feel comfortable. Violence against lgbtq people is not unheard of in the US and violence can start with small acts like this, of restricting information. It's reasonable for any LGBTQ person to experience something like this and then feel unsafe. I'm glad I was there with a group of people. Aside from safety concerns, I was polite but stern during this interaction with the front desk staffer. I wasn't screaming or very emotional but I made it clear that this upset me. Any professional in the hospitality business would want to make this better for their guest. The hotel did nothing. In conclusion, the front desk staffer did their best. It was their first time dealing with something like this. Who should take responsibility is the hotel management. They approved this internet policy and did nothing to make me feel welcome after the fact. If you support LGBTQ rights do not stay at this hotel. read more
