Worst value for money. Would not recommend. Hotel is in a totally sketchy neighborhood, the hotel itself is extremely run down and tired. Upon check in and getting to our room we noticed that although the sheets had been changed and we had fresh towels, the room had not been cleaned more than a quick vacuum and wipe down of the bathroom. So many issues to list - walked into the room and noticed a dirty fork on the floor, the bathroom door was broken and never fixed properly (although we had a maintenance man in our room for about an hour), there was an unknown substance on light switches, walls and glass (chunky, brown, sticky) - no possible way cleaning crew didn't see it (assuming there was a cleaning crew). Cups for coffee maker not individually wrapped and were actually dirty, the shower (not tub/shower combo as described on website) was TINY - we had to turn off the water and open the shower door in order to wash, as you actually couldn't bend over or move around once the shower door was closed. The worst part about all of our is that they completely price-gauged during busy weekend (almost FIVE TIMES more than what is charged on any other weekend). When these issues were brought to the hotel's attention they just ignored us (other than sending the maintenance man to fix the door that he admitted needed to be removed and replaced - so never fixed). Overall horrible experience and will never visit again. read more

Terrible service experience staying at Hotel Shattuck Plaza. On first two days, no cleaning rooms until late evening after making 6-7 times requests throughout the day. No towels for all day. Zino food is good, but service is terrible. Staffs do not simply care. I think hotel management did not train their staffs on how to provide good service and how to become more customer centric. read more

I had stayed several many times during the pandemic, the hotel is always clean and staff is pleasant. It was always relatively quite, except for some street noise if my room was on the street. Nothing terrible. But I will never stay here again. The hotel hosted a very loud event this evening. And I mean very loud. I stayed on the 4th floor and it was unbearable. It's 9pm, and it might be a little early for some to go to sleep, but being that I'm from the east coast, it's actually late. Honestly, this hotel has no regard for hotel guests. I have never stayed at a hotel that's this loud! I called downstairs and they offered to bring me ear plugs. And said the party would be over at 10pm. Not that ear plugs would have worked, but they never brought them. They were probably too busy fielding noise complaints from their guests. Or if they did, I wasn't able to hear the door knock since the music is so loud. I mean, I booked a hotel room to sleep in. The hotel should respect their guests and allow them to sleep, and not book party events! read more

Front desk staff is hit or miss, but mostly miss. They are blatant with their selection of free upgrades as a result of their incompetence and failure to inform guests of massive remodeling and construction throughout the hotel. I stayed for 2 nights and woke up to hammering and shouting and thumping all around me from the upgrades and repairs being done during my stay. Nobody informed me of this and they did not offer to move me to another room. I didn't care to ask since I wasn't staying long but the lack of service is troubling for a hotel that charges what they do. The hotel itself is pleasant but cramped, and parking is in a structure across the street with no direct access to the lobby. This is not good in an area that is usually cold and wet, and the street you have to cross involves dodging insane drivers and trucks. Yeah there's a crosswalk but since the parking entrance/exit is across from the hotel, you'd think they'd apply for a crosswalk or something rather than making you either walk up and around or jaywalk. Yeah I sound like a fat lazy person but I'm not pointing this out to be lazy; it's more an observation since I saw several older patrons staying in addition to families with children, either of which I would encourage to cross without some sort of traffic control. Anywho, the rooms are fine and the beds are firm which is good for me. Showers are clean and the water pressure is decent. Amenities are lacking but I bring my own so it doesn't matter. Restaurant staff are oddly contemptible, but the bar staff are great. I ate at the bar more than in the restaurant. Check out was good since the person I spoke to addressed my points of concern and took care of my bill for me in a more than generous manner. I hope the hotel fixes their problems up front so that they don't need to comp so much over time which will ultimately cause further quality issues. I don't know if I'd stay here again purely because of the cost/benefit imbalance. Hopefully, I won't have to come to Oakland again at all. It's kind of an armpit. read more

Nice hotel in Berkeley. The rooms were very nice, but it was slightly noisy at night since it's in downtown. We felt like we could hear a whole conversation outside (3 floors down from our room). It was quite confusing trying to find our room since the hallways are like a maze going in every direction! We finally got used to it by the end of our trip. It was pretty nice how they have a restaurant and bar downstairs too. The only thing that I had a problem with was that when we were checking out, they said that we ordered a burger with room service, which we definitely did NOT do. They easily and quickly took it off of our bill without any questions. If we are to stay in Berkeley again, I would stay here. It was pretty pricey, but if you don't want a sketchy place to sleep in, Hotel Shattuck is the perfect place. read more

I was coming to Berkeley to visit my niece who just had a baby and needed to find somewhere to stay. I looked at several hotels and finally decided on this one. When I called, a gentleman answered and he did great! I told him where I was coming from (Northern Nevada) and why I was coming. He congratulated me on the addition to my family and proceeded to inform me of the payment options (which is what I was asking for initially). He was extremely personable and I appreciate his service. Coming from Nevada (although Napa born and raised) I didn't know the area. When I arrived a little before 1am, I pulled into the parking garage and was immediately taken back when I saw two drunk guys. One was peeing next to his car, he other was stumbling around. I called the hotel staff and the clerk told me that I could park on the street. Awesome! I ended up getting the only spot on the block that isn't metered. Lol! The check in was easy. The room- nice (not entirely sure it's worth 189+ dollars). I ended up on he 4th floor facing the Berkeley library. Just kind of sucks they won't let you alter your booking date. (From a third party at least). I don't want to cancel, I want to change it. With this storm coming, I'd rather keep a car and not get stranded in the storm, than try and make it out there. Gave them 2 stars because the woman on the phone proceeded to tell me my booking was NON REFUNDABLE about 5 or 6 times. I GOT IT THE FIRST TIME. Staff was nice, room was small and smelled weird. Our friend/co-worker's room had a sewage back up and fill the entire tub!! During a pandemic at that... they did change our friends room but was still charged over $500 for one night. They also places a $200 hold on my card that didn't fall off for nearly a month even after calling a week after our stay. This hotel was empty and the rooms we got were probably a city block away from the elevator! Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, maybe just annoying but this was a work trip for us which meant hauling lots of gear! I wouldn't stay here again unless it next to free and the only other option was sleeping in my car. Also the only parking was on the street as all of the garages in the area were closed. read more

Central location, but that's about it. No microwaves, no refrigerator and very cheap with the creamer/sugar. The bathroom door is on a track, slides open and closed but doesn't close all the way so whoever is using the bathroom has zero privacy. The bathroom is very small, no counter space. The room itself is small, too. Bed is alright, pretty firm. Pillows are comfy. Basic cable, no smart TV. AC can't be programmed lower than 67. Staff was pleasant. Great hotel in the heart of Berkeley, CA! The hotel was very upscale and nice. Loved that it was right around the corner from Jupiter's (check out my review on this place too)! My only complaint was that my room was pretty tiny and my view out the window left a lot to be desired. I was the only one in the room, so it really wasn't a big deal, but if I was traveling wife my wife it would have been more of a problem. My friend that I was traveling with said his room was bigger, so it might just be the luck of the draw. read more

We were in town to see a concert at the Greek, and last time we stayed further from downtown so I was excited to be able to explore the area and stay so close. Parking is across the street in a parking structure, which was fine and close--fees were not exorbitant as they can be sometimes, so that was appreciated. The hotel is located next to a drug store and is convenient to most everything. Overall had a great experience at the hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and our room was well appointed and clean. Nothing super huge or fancy, but met the needs of what we were looking for: a nice place to sleep in between checking out the area and going to a concert. I did love the design of the entry way and felt they had done a good job decorating the lobby to make it look sleek and elegant. Will definitely consider staying here again in the future. read more

This is an old hotel, which means wear and tear. It's beautiful on its own, but not worth the price. Security is alright. The staff is a hit or miss, some people will blow you away with their customer staff, others will ignore you, until you show you have money. Our room was small, clean from a far. With closer look you'll find random hair and fibers. We found a chip in our bed. Not a huge issue, but be warned. The biggest issue is the shower. It does not drain!! read more

truly the most incompetent team of staff i've ever come across...we signed a contract months in advance blocking off rooms for a cheaper rate per room. our guests get there & the hotel staff tells them they have no rooms available. for the next hour, our guests are literally camped outside the hotel lobby. it really doesn't end there. then, as our guests are leaving, they get charged a different price than what's stated in the contract and an additional $1000. to top it all off, the hotel staff is ill-mannered and unintelligent. they gaslit and berated all of our guests. how hard is it follow one contract...overall, a traumatic experience for my team and guests. i think you'd have a more accommodating and pleasant experience sleeping on the streets of berkeley. read more

The people who work here were amazing and so friendly. I can't say enough good things about how they treated us and how they welcomed our golden retriever. He felt like a star. And thanks to them, we had a great stay. The location was perfect. Kudos to Joey and Leu and the rest of the staff for their hospitality. On the challenging side is the elevator situation. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. They need to get it fixed so it doesn't detract from a great stay and the quality of the staff, who did everything possible to overcome it by helping with luggage. I just came to Hotel Shattuck to help my mother check in for the weekend and Serhat was the receptionist. My mom initially used her partners name during The check in process (and also gave her name) and Serhat was very rude and dismissive after being unable to locate the reservation. When my mom reminded him it could be under her name, he basically scolded her for having him search under the other name. When we asked him why he was being rude he was dismissive and sarcastic to use. Literally the worst check in process I have ever witnessed. Let me start with the positive, the doorman could not be more lovely and helpful. The manager helpful. However, the women that checked us in seems to think that no hotel has daily cleaning services anymore to support the idea that this hotel does not. I let her know that is part of what I pay for in a hotel and asked for the bed to be made and some clean towels at minimum. She made a note in the computer and nothing ever happened. The hotel is extremely understaffed. No bathmat. Alarms going off with notification. No A/C.... Rooms are fine, but there is a complete lack of a grown up in charge or any warmth or charm... with the exception of the doorman who could not have been better. Our suggestion. Such a disappointment. The food was sort of lunchroom quality-bland salad, uninteresting cheese selection,​ cold, institutional rolls, ok prime rib but no horseradish sauce. I didn't even try the turkey or stuffing they looked so unappetizing. The deserts we're like something you'd get from Costco. Worse than the mediocre food was the complete lack of ambiance or attention to detail in the presentation. The buffet looked like something in a VFW hall. Nothing festive or at all seasonal. I checked in with my boyfriend and checked out with my fiancé, so naturally, I'm quite pleased with our experience at HSP! Obviously, the hotel is quite historic but the rooms are fresh & modern. I highly recommend rooms on the 5th floor, as you'll have better views (corner room 552 specifically). The bathroom was lovely and spacious with boutique bath products worth taking home (I don't know why I'm so smitten with fancy hotel toiletries, but I am), the beds were comfy and there was no kitschy clutter. Oh yes, don't forget to use the spa robes! Service is well polished in the hotel, restaurant and bar. The hotel resto, FIVE, recently hired a new (French) chef and we were really blown away by the haute cuisine; gorgeously plated & intricately flavored dishes, worthy of their recent Bib Gourmand award. The cocktails are also interesting, and sitting at the posh, chandelier-shrouded bar can transform any day into a special occasion. In fact, when we told our waiter we had just gotten engaged in their lovely hotel moments before, he promptly brought us two flutes of champagne to toast. Perfection! If I had to pick any hotel this is the place. I lived in Berkeley for school and this is the hotel my family would always stay in. It was always spectacularly clean, fresh, beautifully modern with plush beds and pillows and wow their showers were amazing. Any time after I left school and wanted to visit? This was my number one place to stay. Room service was always great and because of its location it was always easily accessible with the parking lot or with downtown Bart. Plus, you're just a few steps from three theaters and some of the best restaurants in town. read more

Best hotel in Berkeley! Parking can be a hassle, but there's a structure right across the street. $5 after 6 pm. I believe it's $15 regular. Front desk is super friendly. They gave us a AAA discount even though we didn't have one. Decorations: bright and modern with black&white wallpaper. Rooms: Red walls, King sized bed=super comfy like I just died&went to heaven, Complimentary robes, Eco-friendly bath products, super clean, cable, and Free WIFI Going up the elevator was only accessible with your room key. That's great because it lowers the risks of random people coming in and messing around in the hotel. Super convenient area because it's located in Downtown Berkeley-- across from UCB, BART station, Starbucks, Walgreen's, movie theaters, bars, restaurants, and shopping stores. read more

Stayed here two nights while in the Bay for a work conference. Walls are thin. I was in a corner room on Kittredge and Shattuck and heard every conversation, car horn, police siren and street entertainer to pass that corner. Bathrooms are small and the counter is nonexistent which I'm sure is fine for men but terrible for women (make up & other toiletries). Didn't frequent the bar/restaurant and didn't have room service but Free in room wi-fi was nice. Gym was extremely small but freshly stocked with clean towels. read more

Parking was the first issue. I drove my husbands F-150 (a bit lowered) over my Lexus to avoid anyone hitting it in this crazy area. I was unable to utilize the parking garage across from the hotel as it had a very low clearance of 6'2. Instead I drove around for 40 mins looking for parking. I have a handicap placard and due to the busy location, was not able to utilize the metered street parking. Check-In was a breeze and the person who checked me in assisted me with my bags to my room. The room, although a bit tiny was nicely decorated. The room was stuffy so I tried to turn on the A/C but it was broken. I called the front desk and was told someone would be there to fix the prob (no one ever came). I headed to FIVE (hotel restaurant) for dinner and a drink. I sat at the bar and both bartenders were not so friendly. A Caucasian woman sat beside me and was greeted warmly, given a menu and placemat. I did not receive either. We both finished our dinners around the same time and both received our checks. She paid with her CC and I with cash. The taller bartender with glasses, closed our her tab, glanced at me and then walked away never assisting me with my bill. The only upside was the free WiFi and a third bartender (much shorter and bald if I remember correctly) was very talkative, easy going and made me feel welcome. I can honestly say I would have been much happier staying at a Best Western or similar because I wouldn't have as much expectation given the fancy photos or high ratings. read more

FINALLY. Somebody figured it out: Berkeley needed a hotel that was clean, great location, had a nice restaurant, is quiet, and at a reasonable price. The new management/owners of Hotel Shattuck Plaza did JUST that. Before the new management came in, this place was known as a 2 - 3 star hotel. Now, well, just look at my ratings. This place rocks. I really can't recommend this place enough. The service is outstanding. Kudos to all the employees here as well as the management. From the front desk (you are all so professional -- wow) to the servers at the 5 restaurant to the housekeepers -- it's all done impeccably. You all make staying away from home a special experience. (Not quite sure about some of the neg reviews -- is this the same hotel we're talking about?) Rooms: The rooms are appropriately appointed, perfect size, new everything. Great comfortable king size beds, flat screen HD TV, baseboard/crown moulding, beautiful bathrooms, walk-in closet, everything a business traveler or personal traveler could want or need. Location: Located on Shattuck Avenue, this hotel is 4 minute walk to the edge of the west side of Berkeley's campus. It's a great location for being close to various restaurants, campus, etc. I've stayed in B&B's in Berkeley, and although those are great locations, they tend to be in the hills, away from the center of Berkeley, and as such, require a car and/or bus ride. Parking: If you are familiar w/ the area, you know parking in Berkeley is a pretty bad. You can figure to pay about $15-$20 per day in a parking structure right across from the hotel. Welcome to the Bay Area! San Francisco is quite similar. Suggestion to avoid bringing a car, if possible, and since this is steps from the BART station, it is a very, very convenient location. Restaurant/Bar: Great bar with a beautiful lobby. This was featured in Budget Travel -- but the pictures do not give it justice. Absolute class and classy people. No riff-raff here, lots of people who look like they aren't exactly scrimping for change....Bar prices are your standard San Fran prices: $5-14 for a glass of wine. I went to the restaurant for breakfast: amazing. Spinach omellette w/ amazingly tasty potatoes. A real treat. I could go on, but the point is: this place has hit the spot. You get all of the above at a very, very reasonable price. I would hands down recommend this place....no, you MUST come here. Mark my word: this place IS the new hot spot in Berkeley and will do exceedingly well if they continue to do what they are doing. read more

Overall it was a "nice" hotel... but not "amazing." I walked past the place at first given the small sign and how the restaurant/bar gets more advertising than the hotel. Even once you walk in, you don't see much in the way of signage. I had to wait a little bit to check in, which was annoying. While there are two computers, there was only one employee. The wait was not horrible, but it was a little frustrating after seeing another staff member who was "not trained" to check people in. However, the guy who did eventually check me in was quite friendly. The upside is that it is a nice hotel and right next to the Downtown Berkeley Bart station. I was put up here for a conference at Berkeley so I have no idea what it cost. The rooms were very modern, and had a boutique hotel feel. The wi-fi was free, but other than that and the typical coffee in the room, don't expect much else. The bed was comfortable but not the best, and the flat screen TV was nice, but it was on the side of the room rather than the middle, so watching it from the bed required me to look to the left. My biggest complaint is that as an energy saving technique, you have to put your room card in a slot to keep the power on. Neat idea... but it meant that when I returned to my room my tablet didn't charge (because the power was off in the room). That was really annoying! read more

I stayed here for two nights for an event at UC Berkeley. The hotel is at a very convenient location right next to BART and Shattuck Avenue is full of restaurants and shops. The hotel is definitely old, but parts have been renovated with a modern look, so the result is a partial-vintage-partial-modern hotel. 1 star off: My room was really small. I stayed in a single and the room was about the size of the bed. There was barely any leg room or luggage room. 1 star off: The hotel is extremely noisy. The walls are paper-thin and I could hear every drunk person who stumbled into the hotel after midnight. The plumbing is loud, too. I got woken up every time the room above mine flushed the toilet or turned on the shower. A friend of mine had a room facing the street, so unfortunately, heard even more noise, including all the conversations on the street. I did stay at a hotel where the walls are so thin that I heard a couple next door going at it, but I did not hear anything like that here. I guess all things considered, Hotel Shattuck Plaza is A-OK then. read more

An excellent choice if you're flying into the area and taking the BART to the hotel. The people are friendly, the bar/restaurant looked pretty good (my friend liked it), the location is spectacular and the rooms were nice. The beds were beyond fantastic. When I have some money I may ask them what brand that mattress was. It was heaven. Parking kills it though. I had my car and I spent half of my trip negotiating where to park it when, so I wouldn't get towed or pay out the nose. That really made this place excellent... yet undesirable... for me anyway. read more

This review is dedicated to The C. and Natalie, who've made both my visits here highly memorable. Yes, I've only been here twice, but each time has been really great. In fact, they've been most enjoyable just talking with Natalie, the 'tender I've had both times, and watching her attempting to remember The C. each time. The second time she remembered me due to my unique name, as her mother bears the same, yet different spelling. I love making connections like that. It makes one's experience all the better, don't you think? Somehow more familiar and homey? I think you know what I'm talking about. I love this lobby! Mind you, on my own, I would never dream of treading into a fancy place such as this. Only with help was I able to step past the threshold into lushness. From the front entrance, to the bar, to the lighting, to the furniture, to the bathroom - I'm mesmerized every time I'm in there, and I doubt my fascination will ever get old on me. (Here, I should endeavour to disclaim that I've only ever visited the bar area. I have no idea what the rooms are like, nor the food) One day I'll take pics in there. I foresee stunning black & whites with people as the main features of my stills. Perhaps dressed in Victorian garb. Oh, I can hardly wait! Take a turn inside, mateys, should you ever be in the area. If you have the cash, this place is a nice splash. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a wedding, so we got a special rate, but honestly it's lovely enough to splurge regardless. Everyone who worked here was super friendly, the room was clean & a decent size, the lobby (with the bar and restaurant) is beautiful. My only knock is there's zero parking! How does a hotel have no parking? So to get my only issue out of the way first--yes, no parking. There's a lot across the street and you'd think it would make sense to have some sort of deal for hotel patrons with them but no. The lot did end up being less expensive than what the hotel quoted me when I asked about parking though. If you don't need a car, the BART is right on the next block, but the boyfriend and I had a day trip to see friends outside the city and the wedding was in Oakland so with my injured foot (broke it about 6-7 weeks earlier) a car was unfortunately needed. Oh and the printer in their business center was out of toner but they were kind enough to print my boarding passes for me when we left. The bar/restaurant-ZINO-is a plus to the whole experience. I will rate it separately here but it was nice (and dangerous!) to be able to charge stuff to the room. Our room was nice--I think we got a King Suite--with a couch and chair and desk and closet and end tables and lots of lights. The bathroom was pretty standard. The makeup removal wipes were a nice touch. We didn't get a do not disturb sign but when housekeeping came the first day she was nice enough to get us one. Overall a very nice experience and worth the big bucks. read more

We stayed here for 17 nights. Convenient location tops the list followed closely by the beautiful lobby and restaurant. We were in and out of the hotel a lot. I noticed upon return the noise level was very high. Apparently the acoustics in the lobby aren't that great, but certainly not a big deal. The staff was always courteous and attentive. We asked for extra pillows and hangers and they were delivered promptly. We reserved a room with a view and that's exactly what we got. Again, the location is phenomenal. I'm glad to report the hotel is pretty darn good, too. We will most definitely come back. read more

I had an event here back in September. This is a great central location for Berkeley. It is less than a block away from the downtown Berkeley BART and a great boutique hotel. The hotel is clean and refurbished and the staff is friendly. We had an event on the back patio the first night and the food, to the catering manager was superb. My only complaint was that it was bit cold, and they weren't prepared for the temperature change and told me that if i needed a heater, I wouldve had to order it in advance. I had a superior room on the 5th floor and the only difference between their standard room is the size of the bathroom. The bathroom is a little bigger. There is only restaurant in the hotel and it was great. I will review that separately. Overall, a great hotel in the Berkeley area. I would recommend if you like the boutique vibe. read more

This wonderful Hotel is a life saver. My daughter and I had a reservation at a nearby hotel and upon arriving did not feel safe for numerous reasons. At 10 pm we began calling around and the staff at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza were so cooperative and friendly. We immediately drove over and they gave us the web rate for the room ( which they did not have to do) and a room upgrade. We just love this place. We travel to Berkeley on a regular basis. Sometimes we stay with friends or relatives, sometimes in hotels. The rooms here are on the small side but so very nicely done. Since we are always out, size does not matter to us. The location is especially good if you are here without a car. BART is on the same block. When BART isn't convenient for a need, it is easy to get a cab. The best Berkeley restaurants (with just a few exceptions) are within walking distance though Chez Panisse and the rest of the Gourmet Ghetto are a "healthy" walk. I've suffered through "fancy" mega-chains and conference hotels too much lately. Shattuck Plaza's a great break from those. Honestly friendly and helpful staff, great decor, and comfortable rooms. The location is perfect for BART and AC Transit access. It was not too loud even in my Allston-facing room. The FIVE bar is a nice stop (separate review). The staff definitely makes the place. They seem genuinely glad to help out, even opening doors and arranging transportation when you mistakenly book a too-early Sunday flight. If you drive, they now offer valet parking. If you're a AAA member, check the much lower rates. If you're not a AAA member, the difference will pay for your membership. The WiFi can be flaky, but it's far better than other hotels I've used. Plus they provide wired access as well. And a full A/V panel for connecting to the TV? "Only in Berkeley..." Another nice touch is that the desk drawer has stationary and envelopes. For writing letters. For real. The "green" touches are great. I don't need new towels every single day, or new bottles of stuff or new soap all the time. I do wish they wouldn't try to play up the "green" aspect; all those touches save the *hotel* money. read more

Chose this location due to convenience, but never again! Noisy, noisy, noisy! For the price and considering their located on a busy stretch in Berkeley, once would assume they'd have some sound proofing on the windows. Literally heard every single noise coming from outside. Cars driving buy, people talking as they walked by, homeless screaming.. every noise possible. Worst night sleep ever! Room was small, but cute. I was expecting more room for the price. Beds were not very comfortable. I assumed parking would be validated since there weren't many options other than parking garages in the area, but I was mistaken. Parking hit me $40!! Insane!! The woman at the front desk was very sweet, that was the only plus to this place. Needless to say, I won't be back. read more

Location: Downtown Berkeley, right across the street from UC Berkeley Parking: Street or for overnight their is 2 parking garages within 2 blocks. Front Desk: Very helpful and fast. They were welcoming and courteous. Decor: Bright, vibrant, clean and modern Room: Vibrant red walls. King Bed was comfortable. Walk-in Closet with Robes. Bathroom was sleek and updated. Its convenient to the BART, Starbucks, UCB, restaurants, banks, and even a Walgreens. I stayed here for about 4 days and the room was always maintained. read more
