I'm surprised to see how many people had a bad experience at Hotel Vegas. I had a great time! I saw Mobley play a show and the sound was fine. The place was packed and the bar tenders were keeping up with no issues. Despite the large crowd they didn't try to rush my order or get annoyed with my indecisiveness. The patio was what you could expect at most east side bars. It had plenty of tables and was a nice escape from the crowd inside. The only criticism I have is about the layout of the place. The door you would assume to be the front door is locked, and the correct door is next to the stage and looks like a band entrance. That probably confuses a lot of people. Between the main part of the bar and the patio there is a weird second room. I think there was an arcade game or 2 in there but it was kind of empty undefined. I think if they added some seating it would make more sense to customers. read more

I feel like Hotel Vegas took over from Emo's in the small venue/punk show department. I really like this bar. No frills, small stages, and they host great bands. I came here for the Burger Records/Hardly Art show and a few others and it's always been a good time. Cheap drinks, fun crowd. It does get packed, though. read more

Hotel Vegas is a good dive spot, and they're awesome for the bands they put on. The huge patio in the back is definitely a plus, and the food truck in back is pretty bomb and cheap. The downside is the fact that it can get super crowded in the back patio on a weekend night, doesn't seem like there's a capacity limit. 2 fights broke out last time I was there and there wasn't much staff or security to control it. Overall, great for seeing small bands play for a cheap cover, decent priced drinks that won't break the bank. 3.5 stars overall. read more

Cool place to catch a concert on East Sixth! This is an old-school Lone Star swillin' redneck meets Vegas type of dive. This is not some glamorous place, like the Bellagio in Vegas, more like Freemont Street. It's dirty here- I enjoy checking out the many stains on the ceiling wondering how the hell whatever that is up there, how it got up there. It doesn't look like most of the place has been cleaned well since Vegas was run by the mafia. One of the cool things about this place is the bands that they get- they're always doing something with live music. You are in the Live Music Capitol of the World, after all. There's often two stages- one inside with an intimate feel to it, where you're greeted with cheap beers and a wall of sound. It's loud in there. The restrooms are fairly clean, but often get crowded quickly. Outside, they have a back stage that's nice when it's going on. They often do SXSW stuff back there, and have an outside bar to help with the drink situations. Came here because The Brixton, the bar next door, was closed (Despite having open hours advertised for Sundays). We didn't want to give up on our "Less main stream side of 6th St." Adventure, so when we heard live music and saw the huge crowd at Hotel Vegas, we thought we'd go check it out. Cover is $5, unless you can produce a Texas ID, in which case you get in for free! The back is essentially a dirt lot with easy ups galore, wooden benches and seats, a pop up bar counter and a pop up merch stand, with a stage as the focal point. String lights are hung about and I also noticed a few puppies with their owners, dog friendly is always a plus! I get this is more of a dive bar, so I shouldn't expect anything upscale or super pristine, and I don't expect that. I've been to plenty of awesome dive bars. The one thing I do expect from ANY bar is at least a decently cleaned bathroom. This was not present here. The bathroom was soooooooo gnarly. I wish I would have snapped a picture just so I can properly convey just how effed this bathroom was. Super small, two stalls, one sink, really REALLY dirty feeling. Paper towels all over the ground, graffiti all over the stalls and walls, and the toilet itself, ICKK! The smell didn't help and there was no soap. C'mon guys, can we at least get some soap in here?! Also, we wanted to order a drink in the back before the next Band came on, but there were no menus or drink boards and the bartenders weren't helpful or welcoming. We didn't even know what kind of beer they had because it wasn't posted anywhere. Ended up not getting a drink here after all. On the plus side, the band playing was Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, a local east Austin band that plays about 95% Selena covers. We really enjoyed their music and energy!! So much fun doing a little dancing to Selena. Besides the music, Hotel Vegas was a let down. They failed to capture our attention or make us want to stay. Next time we are in Austin, I think we'll pass. read more

Look, I get it. When there are 100 people at your bar, clamoring for your attention and you're hungover or tired or the famous austin allergies have made it past your moustache, being friendly is oh so tough. But when the streets deserted and tumbleweeds are a-blowin, you can take a second to be helpful. I purchased three tickets to T bird & the breaks. Two of us showed together, one was straggling. My solution to the missing party? "I've got one more friend coming -- why don't we just mark this 3 to 1 and she can tell you she's that extra ticket?" Also, I could have asked them to drop and give me 50 because the looks I received were blank and vaguely hostile. So instead, I lurked around the front of the bar for 30 minutes, waiting to make sure she could get in. Likewise, when the band was 46 minutes late coming on, I asked that same accommodating gentlemen when he thought the band might start. "Why dont you go find the band and ask them?" Yeah. Why don't I? After I punch you in the kidney for being an ass. I'm not prone to violence so we avoided that particular brand of confrontation but give me a break. Even if you don't know when the band is coming on, just say you dont know. No need to drop in a snarky comment. The bartenders were quick and though the drinks were small, it's nothing out of the ordinary. What stuck with me long after the event was the fact that the door guy felt the need to go out of his way to be so unhelpful and condescending. read more

My first time here was last weekend, I went with a group of friends to see a popular Austin band. Even though we were early for the show, the teeny inside space of the club was already at capacity. Fine that's cool we will wait, I understand. Upon entering we notice that oh yeah this place is so crowded that you have to fight your way to the bar. Once we get to the bar, the bartender, a guy who could care less that the place was insanely packed, asked me to repeat my order three times, and then proceeded to take twenty minutes to finally get it to me. With all of the people I really couldn't tell what the place looked like inside its very dark. I never got to a bathroom because of the sea of bodies, thank god there is a port o potty outside. The outside was the only place that had enough space to hold people, it would have made sense to have a show out there instead. The only reason I am not giving this place one star is that there was one bartender, a very nice lady who actually seem to care about customers and tried to get people their drinks as soon as she could. All in all it was a bad experience and I don't think I will be going back. This bar obviously overestimated the amount of people it could comfortably take on, this notion combined with poor service gave a bad impression. Maybe Hotel Vegas will learn one day. read more

All the worst things about a hipster dive in one suffocating package. (And I usually dig dives, the dingier the better, but this one was just no fun.) A night in mid-November that was nice and chilly (temperatures in the 60s) had me struggling to breathe the sticky, hot air or shove an elbow between sweaty people to reach the bar. $3 Lone Star tallboys when we did make it, but getting the bartender's attention was a real struggle. The show onstage was horrifying -- when I could see it at all (no decent sight lines whatsoever unless you were a taller than 6 feet or within 3 feet of the stage. Some kind of gross stripper competition thing involved various women dancing to horrible music while changing from one awful outfit to another. The low point was someone wearing an old lady outfit that turned into a dog costume as she swayed to "How Much Is That Doggy in the Window?" Supposedly bands came on later in the day, but I couldn't stick around more than an hour, even to hear friends play. The backyard has several tables and all were packed, so getting fresh air was an exercise in standing next to stinky trash cans on rocky ground. Not exactly inviting. Gross bathrooms and a cocky doorman are the divey cherries on top. read more

This place is great! And they have been steadily making improvements literally every week. Things I love about Hotel Vegas: 1) Easiest load-in, considering it's on E6th. 2) The patio is nice and spacious and there are now beautiful plants all around. 3) The bathrooms are FINE! There are two stalls, they both have doors, and I have only been here once when there was no toilet paper. Upon exiting, I saw the owner carrying in armfuls of it. 4) ALL THE SHOWS ARE GREAT AND OFTEN FREE! or REALLY CHEAP! 5) The sound is great, the SOUND GUYS are great and really helpful. 6) Everyone who works here plays here. That builds a great community and if you aren't interested in this, oh well. There are other things I like and I could go on, but I am in a hurry. I am trying to boost up their yelp rep. In my opinion, there's no better value than a freshly painted dive. You get most of the cost savings of a dive (Coors Light was $2.50), with none of the long term costs of exposure to an unclean environment (psychological trauma, expensive micro-extermination procedures on cooties real and imagined). The male bartender emerged from the women's room wheezing like had the swine flu, but he was cordial enough, and in the week since my visit I have not come down with any illness. The colors are actually kinda pretty for a dive- black ceiling, purple plaster walls, gecko green vents. They missed a few spots in the renovation- the side shelf looked on the verge of collapse, the 80s television hadn't been washed since the 80s, and my weak male nose intuited that the walls may have been submerged in urine during a prior decade- but all the woman who make it out here are scantily clad, holding a beer, and smile with steady eye contact the way respectful poster girls are known to do. Despite the low key vibe of the ranchero regulars, the owner keeps the atmosphere festive by feeding the juke, which alternated club music with the lively "oom-pah" tuba of modern ranchero. There is nothing to like about this venue, in my opinion. It is a tiny venue, packed far beyond capacity. This place is a tragedy waiting to happen. Every square foot was covered with feet. There wasn't room to get to a door. About half the crowd was smoking indoors. There were plenty of people being over-served and drunk off their asses. There were beers and drinks being thrown over the crowd. There seemed to be absolutely no management supervision, just bartenders looking to dispense as many drinks as possible. read more

Cool venue on the east side - indoor dance room (with bars) and lots of outside patio seating - chill vibe. Drinks are reasonably priced $5-$8 for most drinks and the staff are friendly. The DJ was killing it when I was there last week, but have been there with some meh DJs as well. Warning - the music in the dance room is insanely loud - like painfully loud based on the acoustics of the room. There was a bartender that was rude there and basically demanded a tip after we paid. There are a few pains greater than that interminable wait at the bar, lines 5 deep, trying to make eye contact with the bartender, and to arrive at the front of the queue--gleeful and optimistic--and then the bartender summons a few of his buddies from the back row to cut in line in front of you, makes complicated drinks, and have 10 minutes in chitchat. On December 29th, 2015, I reach the front of the queue, and the bartender--long hair, scruffy beard, white male early 30s--summoned his buddies to the front. I'm sorry. That's not how a meritocracy works. That's not even how lines fuckin work. Go back to bartending in your friend's basement. I'm sure you're capable of scratching someone's name on a Solo cup with a Sharpie. But you're not a professional and you do not comport yourself as a professional. Way to be handsome though. You'll probably keep a job. But you don't deserve this one. PS: Hotel Vegas is actually a fun night spot. I'm going up the star rating from the one star I gave them when I was irritated. A group of friends and I popped in here last Saturday night.. Um, yikes. Getting into the bar is ridiculous since there's a large crowd at the bar. The dance floor seems reasonable and the DJs that were playing were not bad, but not quite dancey. Trying to get the back seating area was a hassle, trying to shove through drunken people at the bar. Once reaching the back, we realized there were some armchairs and a couch.. but no bathroom. Their one bathroom is a port-a-potty.... that is outside. Really? It's also so loud in here that you have to scream to your friends to hear each other, but this is common for all bars, so I can't fault them for this. Really unimpressed. read more

This was a pretty decent spot to set up for some free shows at SXSW, right across from the Spotify showcase stage. Plus, the always amazing Beverly was randomly playing an indoor show here. If you're from Dallas and looking for a comparison, Hotel Vegas is like the Doublewide if the Doublewide's stage was outdoors. However, where Hotel Vegas succeeds is its indoor spot as well. I can't speak towards indoors service, but I'll tell you that the beer lines outside were almost non-existent at south by this year. Perfect for that 85 degree afternoon drinking to a 3 piece jam band. Also, it is very walkable from the West side, so you might not even have to Uber or hitchhike here. Like Kassie said. As far as dive bars go I loved the vibe (I was here for a queer event) but it's hot as hell inside and the beers are pretty pricey for basic ass Miller lites. It's super close to my house so I'll probably be back but not without pre gaming first. Also as a trans person I always make note of the bathroom situation. Like many bars the men's bathroom has no stall doors which could pose a problem for some transmasculine people. read more

This is definitely one of my top favorite places to see live music in, well, the live music capital of the world. So that's saying a lot. There are multiple stages indoors as well as a large outdoor stage. There are ample places to sit with a good view and ample places to buy alcohol. The vibe is very laid back and come one, come all here, which I love so much. It's very divey, but they really know how to pick 'em. My favorite thing about this place is that I usually come to see one band I know and leave having just discovered a new band I like even better. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. Me and my husband came down from Houston to check out this place for NYE. Although the venue isn't visually appealing, the live music makes up for the lack of visual beauty. All the bands were great! The inside was nothing short of disappointing and the restrooms were NOT good at all. The women's bathroom in one room only had one stall and it was flooding with water half the night. Not one staff member even noticed the water coming from the door. I would have hated to see someone slip and fall. If you want cheap strong drinks and good music I suggest giving this place a try though. I just won't be back for NYE lol read more

I went to Hotel Vegas about two weeks ago. My first impression was a fun, care-free, dive bar like several others around the area. The drinks were great at the outside bar, however, when I went inside to order a drink I received terrible service. A friend and I ordered a tequila shot for each of us, but when we asked for salt with the drink the bartender (with long blonde hair) clearly looked unhappy. He did give us salt but it was reluctant and he poured the salt ALL over the bar in order to give it to us. It was incredibly disrespectful and we were taken aback by this. Typically I would never write a review, but I actually made this account just to tell this story because it truly was the worst service I have EVER received. Aside from this part of the night, Hotel Vegas was fun. My friends and I had a good time with each other and met some really cool people. I definitely recommend going here, just try not to order drinks inside and maybe stay away from the employee that was disrespectful towards my friend and I. ALSO - I read previous reviews where one said the staff is "clicky and rude" which I can not stress enough. I hope that the owner of this joint trains the staff to become more respectful towards their customers. read more

This place is ok, nothing really memorable about the place except the sign outside. We went here for New Years 2013 and they had some punk cover bands in conjunction with shows at the Volstead Lounge and Pine Street Station. Although we only stayed for the Black Flag band the sound quality was good, the service was quick, and the beer was cold. I have walked past this place in the past and the music always sounds good, I guess if you are in the area it may be worth a visit but I cannot say I would go out of my way to visit Hotel Vegas. read more

What I actually mean to say is that if you like to sweat it out and dance like nobody is watching, this is the place to spend your Friday evenings. Whether you're drunk, sober, or barely conscious, you ain't livin' until you've grooved to the tunes here. The first time I entered the venue, I was on a date with my current flame. This flame is not fond of dancing, but I am. They were nice enough to take me, and quietly stood in the corner while watching the sweat roll off my pores. The music was incredible. Everybody looked like they were dressed from 1997, but not old enough to remember Hanson. (For the record, I am old enough to remember what I wore in 1997 and the music of Hanson). For that reason, I felt out of place. But the music and the alcohol that I had imbibed made me remember that we are all human, one and the same, born from the same very zygote, and that life is truly beautiful. No, I was not on drugs, and nor do I condone the sort. Hotel Vegas just has that vibe - the vibe that makes you remember how beautiful life is. read more

Be careful when going to this establishment, they're door guy(s) will charge you different amounts at the door from $5-$20, they just pick what amount they want to charge you. Walked into a performance of "Moist Virginity" which was a girl moaning into a microphone in a tune that was charming to a background melody that was so effing eerie it was enchanting. When doors open at 9pm on a weeknight and the opening band who is scheduled to play at 10 pm isn't even starting at 11pm you are really poorly mismanaged and our city is sad.
