If you're looking for an affordable, older, no-frills hotel in the downtown area, Hotel Vertigo is a perfect candidate. If you're under the impression that this place has anything to do with the iconic SF Hitchcock film, you'll be disappointed. As someone who has spent many a night in many a hotel in the heart of the city, I've developed a checklist of the basic amenities that make a stay worth it, or that justify the sometime exorbitant prices for even the shadiest of the bunch. Hotel Vertigo fell somewhere in the middle. First, the good: The bed was comfy, the water pressure great. The service was exceptional, from the sweet front desk gal who walked me through everything about the place and offered to take my bags in the back while I explored the city, to the manager who personally came up to make sure the TV was working in my room. Now the bad: Electrical outlets were almost impossible to find or buried behind the bed. There didn't seem to be any sort of heating/cooling unit, just an old grate in the wall that loudly blew air. I used this to cover up the noise from neighboring rooms, which leads me to another criticism - thin walls. Most annoying was some sort of motion sensor light in the doorway which was just close enough to my bed so as to come on at random throughout the night. And back to that Vertigo theme - Besides them playing the movie on loop at a TV behind the front counter and a stairwell that kind of sort of resembles the stairwell from the movie (which was actually in a church tower in a different town, not a hotel), I didn't see much. I give them props for at least repping and honoring the film that helped make this town famous. Overall, Hotel Vertigo is a good budget hotel that's particularly pleasing to those who are budget travelers. They won't have everything you're looking for, but in San Francisco, everything you're looking for costs way too much.

I really enjoyed the stay here at Hotel Vertigo! It was very nice, clean and had all we needed. Perfectly located in between late night pizza spots, stop shops, breakfast/pastry and coffee joints literally every corner. However I do not like the fact the assigned parking lot was full. But we did get lucky to find parking else where for $30 overnight. Staff was very polite! Price was also right! We've payed up to $200 a night at other hotels that weren't any better than here! Check out Priceline for great deals :)

We booked a stay for 3 nights at Hotel Vertigo and could not have been happier with the price and room. We prepaid on Expedia with a great price and $25 off coupon. Check-in is at 3 pm but we checked in around noon without issue since they had a room available for us on the 4th floor. I asked for a room away from the elevator and they gave us one that was around the corner with windows facing the inner courtyard. I'm glad we weren't facing the street because street noise in SF can be loud. Our hotel was far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Union Square but close enough to walk to. My only gripe is walking through the Tenderloin from the Civic Center BART station. It can be sketchy but for the most part, people leave you alone. I may consider taking the bus next time for that short walk uphill. Our room consisted of a queen sized bed, desk, refrigerator, flat screen TV, 2 phones, free wifi, iPod clock dock (30 pin connector), horse head lamps, ceiling fan, safe, iron & ironing board, hair dryer, walk-in closet, 2 fluffy robes, and Bathé toiletries. For the most part our side of the hotel was quiet. You can hear the doors slam at random hours but we didn't hear anyone next door or above us. We did hear the water running in the pipes but that's normal for old hotels like this one. The windows don't have screens but we didn't have any issues with flying insects. There is no air conditioning and it is cold here most of the year so they don't usually need it. Cool fact: Hitchcock's Vertigo was partially filmed here. The movie can be seen on constant loop behind the reception desk. This hotel was built in the early 1900s and survived the Great SF Quake of 1906. They offer complimentary coffee and tea in the morning before 9:30 am and complimentary wine from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The bottled water in the rooms are NOT complimentary. We just walked to a nearby grocery store and bought a gallon of water to use in refillable bottles instead. They also offer a small selection of snacks and drinks in the room for sale. We didn't bother to partake in those. They also offer an airport shuttle for $15/person. We opted to take the BART back for $8.65/person instead. They were kind enough to securely store our luggage until it was time to leave for our flight.

The hotel is now a homeless shelter. People gather in front of the building with no mask, no social distancing. Human waste, trash, and homeless encampment pop up all around the block. The whole street is ruined

Happened to take a day trip to San Fran and was too tired to head back south. Was accommodated by the Vertigo hotel for a last minute reservation. The receptionist was very friendly and gave great customer service. The room had a window view that I really appreciated for that authentic San Francisco experience. After parking my car for the night, I was concerned about dinner but found the pizza shop a few doors down and a bodega across the street at the corner. The room was clean which is my biggest concern when staying in hotels. Although an older property, I didn't not feel like I was suffering with a lack of cleanliness. The beds were oh so comfortable and quiet. I slept like a baby.

If you are a fan of Hitchcock's movies...You have heard of this Hotel. The guest room contains one nod to Hitchcock's masterpiece - wall art that is a contemporary play off the 'swirl' symbol in the Vertigo movie. I was feeling the modern & playful decor of the warm tangerine orange and white. I didn't even mind the tilted horse head lamps. I had little to complain about and enjoy my stay here. I love the Tree coffee tables and the sofas in the Lobby. The staff was very helpful and so friendly. PROS: -Modern Rooms -Centrally located and easy walking distance to all of SF's attraction. -Entirely Non-Smoking -Pet-Friendly ($25 non-refundable cleaning fee, pets under 50 lbs) -One time IN-OUT Valet parking $35 / Oversize $40 -Daily Newspaper in the lobby -Complimentary Wi-Fi & access to the computer in the Lobby -Eco Practices & Comfy BED -Access to Nearby High-End Fitness Club ($15 passes available) -Flat Screen TVs -Dual Cordless Phones -iPod Speaker Docks -Signature Robes -Refrigerator -Free Maps -Green Tea Body wash & Soap CONS: -check in starts 3pm -Elevator is little slow -7 Floors & only 100 rooms. -Bathroom & Sink is little small -The heater/ air conditioning is little loud. Found out about this place from my fellow yelper friend who is a meat eater maybe that is the reason she loves the horse lamps? Anyways...I was surprise how inexpensive my two rooms I booked ( Executive King and Doube Double Bed). If you want a bigger room...go get the Double Double. I enjoyed taking showers with the rain fall shower head. Grocery store next to the hotel if you want some booze! Highly Recommended. I would stay here again in a heart beat.

I'm obsessed like Scotty was in the movie. The exterior of the Hotel Vertigo, formally The Empire Hotel; located at 940 Sutter Street, was used in Vertigo as location of hotel where Judy Barton lives. The studio version of her hotel room was modelled on room 401, due to their proximity to the Empire's neon sign. We stayed in a double queen room 405 down the hall from 401. They stream the film, Vertigo, on a loop, 24/7 in the lobby. It can be a bit dizzying when one is trying to concentrate. The room we had was facing the street side and didn't seem loud to us as others suggested, and I'm not a heavy sleeper either. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was cleaned to my satisfaction. Snacks and beverages provided in the room are not complimentary. We partook of these goodies after a night of inbibing. The candy came in handy. I loved the orange and cream color palette. The elevator can get busy with wait times, so we took the stairs mostly. The front desk was cordial and efficient. We didn't drive a car, so we didn't need the valet that they provide for a fee. We walked everywhere, the location can't be beat. It's just below Nob Hill, and within walking distance to downtown, Chinatown, and the Ferry Building to name. We took cabs, or Uber to further destinations. The clientele was a nice mix of young and mature travelers. I look forward to another stay in the future. We stayed April 2014

Old New York Hotel renovated to the new Hotel Vertigo... still an old hotel to me. Old elevator, old hallways, old paper thin walls that I can hear next door guests coughing and snoring throughout the night. Cons: -Not so friendly/customer oriented hotel staff, -Cable was out, and they didn't even tell me when I checked in. Found out the hard way when I got to my room. You should announce these things when I first get there! -No vending machines, no bottled water. WTH! and it was in the middle of the night when I felt parched. Front desk told me to drink the tap water... yuck -$40 for valet parking! You could just go one block down (840 Sutter St) and pay $21 instead -Those white horse heads for lamps are kinda scary when you look over at them in the middle of the night -As mentioned earlier - the paper thin walls -My room was in the back corner of the hotel, that side was darker and it made the look & feel of the room depressing Pros: -New modern furniture -Mini-fridge -iHome speaker system, handy if you forgot your iPhone charger -Two wireless phones... but why would I need two wireless phones if I'm in the same room? O_0 -Close-by pizzeria, gelato/coffee shop, liquor store Bottom line - I wouldn't stay here again. But if these pros and cons aren't too shabby for your hotel standards, then go for it. I'd rather pay a little more (cost me $93 for a Sat nite) and stay at a nicer place, which is what I should have done.

Hotel Vertigo is a great place to stay. Pricing, location, and amenities are what makes this hotel a good choice. All staff I encountered were friendly, including the manager, front desk staff, and housekeeping staff. I arrived at 1pm, and although check-in is not until 3pm, they had a room available for me to check in early. After checking in, I was provided with a map showimg where the hotel is located and it's surrounding areas. Great way to find your way around. The room is clean, comfortable, and pretty modern. There was a nice desk with a chair I could sit at to look out the window and plan my day. There was a fridge with space so I was able to place leftover food or pastries there. There is complimentary tea and coffee 7-10am in the lobby. The fitness center is small, but adequate; it has a treadmill, bike, and elliptical for cardio, mats to stretch or exercise on, exercise balls, weights, a water dispenser, and towels. There's also a TV. The lobby is spacious with plenty of seating; it was perfect for me to hang out there while waiting to meet friends. I never had a problem with wifi. I just had to reconnect each time I left and returned to the hotel, but besides that, it worked perfectly. The hotel is literally in the center of Haight/Ashbury, Castro, Mission, Tenderloin, Union Square, FiDi, North Beach, Chinatown - basically most of the areas in SF. Going down will lead directly into Tenderloin, while going up will lead to Nob Hill and Russian hill, two different vibes. There is Bite, a small restaurant, outside the hotel if you want late night munchies or are hungry. Hotel Vertigo is sandwiched between 2 grocery stores/markets. There are multiple bars on Sutter by the hotel. It is about a 10-15min walk to Union Square. You can go down Sutter either way to avoid the Tenderloin if you want to feel safe. You can take the BART to either Civic Center or Powell to get to the hotel. I used Powell to avoid the Tenderloin area, and both Civic Center and Powell are about the same distance from the hotel so it doesn't matter which you choose. I explored Chinatown and North Beach area, Financial District and the Ferry Building, South of Market, Union Square, and Nob Hill and Russian Hill, all via walking. It was so easy to figure out and get around. Exploring alone at times, I felt safe inside and outside the hotel. Possible negatives: -Elevator is very slow; walking the stairs is faster. -Every single time I left the hotel and came back, my room key did not work. I tried separating it from my credit cards, but it still did not work. Sometimes my friend was in the room so she opened the door for me and other times, I had to walk down 5 flights of stairs to get new keys. One time, I had to go twice because the new key was accidentally registered to a different room #. -I could hear footsteps above me. Realizing that, I tried to step lightly to not bother the people in the room below me. -I had no hot water in the shower during the day, but I got some hot shower water at 11pm. -No air conditioner or heater, but there is a fan. -TV channels were interrupted at times. Who goes to SF to lay and watch TV? My friend does. -I put the "keep it down" sign on the door, but the room was made anyway. The sign is flimsy, so it could have flipped when we closed the door after leaving. I usually pack everything away if housekeeping is coming, but didn't get to this time due to the mix-up. Luckily, all my stuff was left as is and nothing was missing. Everything was refilled in the bathroom. Overall, these possible negatives did not bother me much. The location, safety, and the condition of the hotel outweighed the minor setbacks above. Just keep in mind and be prepared if any of the above will bother you.

I am the type of person who relies more on pictures than the actual reviews of people. If the room looks nice, then it must be nice. It's not the best way to looks for a good room, but I didn't have a single problem at Hotel Vertigo. My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend because he got me tickets to Wicked and he's never been to SF before. I missed my chance at a room at the Westin because the price went up, so I looked for smaller hotels like this one. When I came across Hotel Vertigo, I couldn't get over how cheap the room was for the weekend and how nice the room looked in the pictures. I was a little scared to book it because a lot of people said how thin the walls were and how hard it was for them the sleep because of it. I took a chance anyway and let me tell you, I am a relatively light sleeper and I had no problems with noise. I had an easy sleep both nights and no outside noise (from the hallway or the streets) bothered me. Now, some people say the staff wasn't so nice, they were rude, and weren't very helpful. I don't know who was working there at the time, but the people I dealt with were as nice and helpful as it gets. The check-in lady was very kind and quick with everything so we could get situated in our room. After we got ready to watch Wicked, we went downstairs and another man was at the check-in desk. We told him we needed to get to the Orpheum Theater and he actually called us a cab. We had 15 minutes to get there and the cab was taking a little too long. He told us it was only a 10 minute walk down Hyde St. and since we're from LA, its not different from the DTLA area. It was a little sketchy, but I never felt unsafe and he was right. It wasn't that much different. Overall, I liked this place and if I planned on visiting the SF area again, I was plan to stay here. Good price, nice room, and very close to Union Square and trolly stops.

There are so many terrific boutique hotels in San Francisco that you could probably sleep somewhere different every day of the year and have a lovely time. Everywhere else that would make you a common whore, but in San Francisco you'd be known as a "connoisseur." No wait, that's what they'd call you in Paris. I think in San Francisco the word for that is "Elite Yelper." Designing a hotel based on Hitchcock's classic San Francisco film Vertigo is a fantastic idea. The central staircase, the film in the lobby on an endless loop (which must NOT be so lovely for the people working the front desk after a week or two), the room's themselves that have a sort of late 50s aesthetic. A sign in the lobby announces "Equilibrium is overrated." Yeah, I agree, so why no bar in the lobby? Apparently, they're working on that, so in the meantime I had to make frequent visits to Cantina across the street. Like most boutique hotels in San Francisco, the rooms are small but stylish. The bed was super, super comfortable. And yes, you naughty minx, I did actually sleep in it. For at least a couple hours. Helpful, friendly staff who didn't judge me when I staggered in at 4 in the morning. God I love this city. read more

Beautiful and sleek room decor, modern and unique bathrooms. Very comfortable place to stay in a neighborhood that offers a lot of conveniences, namely food options. You definitely know you're in San Francisco when you step out the front door. Depending on how many nights you stay, you can get an even better bargain on the rate. I think my cost was less than $90 a night because I was there for 4 nights or so. In San Fran? That's simply amazing! It is a long uphill walk from the BART. Don't make the same mistake as me and drag your luggage when you check in - hail a cab instead! Without the luggage, it's a nice walk. read more

Absolute worst customer service ever. Management like this disgusts me. We booked through Hotwire as a "Top Secret Hotel". When we called the hotel to make sure we were getting a room with 2 beds, they told us it would be an extra $50. What?! I've never checked in to a hotel that didn't have 2-bed rooms as the standard. If anything, I've always had to fight for a room that has only one bed. Fine, whatever. We agree to pay the extra $50 for an "upgrade" to 2 beds. The hotel rep all of a sudden tells us the rate just went up to $100. Excuse me? Yes, she said her manager just told her that as she was talking to us. Are you kidding me? You just told us it was $50 and now that we have agreed to pay it, you jack the price up to $100? We asked to talk to the manager and she put us on hold. After 30 minutes of being put on hold, we finally decided to hang up and just talk to her in person when we got there to check in. When we got there, we asked how much it would be just to add a rollaway bed. She answered $15. When we agreed to pay the $15 for a rollaway bed (which was a twin size)--surprise! the price just went up to $20. Whatever, we agreed to pay that too. When we got to the room, it was very small and there was barely even any room for a rollaway. The rollaway itself...I wouldn't even let my dog sleep on that thing. It was nothing but springs and a small amount of cotton. So we had to pay the extra $100 for a room with 2 beds, which actually ended up being an additional $115 after taxes. The hotel and rooms itself are OK by old SF boutique hotel standards. The lamp was broken in the room and the beds were the smallest full-size beds I've ever seen. But I've never had a place try so hard and shamelessly to gauge customers any way they can. They were completely unapologetic and are just trying to pull a fast one and gyp their customers every chance they get. It's completely unprofessional for a place to raise their prices on the spot, after you've already agreed to pay their first obscene price. Places and people like this disgust me. read more

Selected the Hotel Vertigo based on all of the positive reviews and the neighborhood, and we weren't disappointed. We stayed 8 nights and thoroughly enjoyed all of them! Pros: -Good sized rooms -Comfortable beds & high quality bedding & towels -Very clean rooms and modern, clean bathroom -Conveniences nearby include market, laundry, small bar -Convenient location with easy access to the Powell Street BART station, cable cars, and very walkable to Nob Hill, Russian HIll and the wharf -Better neighborhood than some of the other options in this price range - didn't see bad elements in the neighborhood during our 8 night stay Cons: There was only one less than positive experience, and it was with the front desk on the day we checked out. We had arranged for a late checkout the evening before with the front desk, and were surprised by a visit from someone from the hotel staff at our door while we were getting ready to leave. We were rather curtly informed that we would need to be out by 1:00 or pay for an extra half day (we were told we had until 1:30 before). We had to rush out of the hotel, I didn't even have time to completely get ready which left things on a less than positive note. I would have appreciated some understanding and a few minutes leeway from the front desk, and yet that wasn't the case. I would definitely recommend the hotel, and I'd stay there again. read more

I really thought this was a pleasant hotel to stay at in the middle of downtown SF and it was nice having everything so close to our stay. I really appreciated the staff and how friendly they were and the hotel neatness and clean environment. This hotel was really nice inside and it offer a lot of nice services like a nice complimentary pastry and coffee and leaving your bags after you checkout. I thought that was really cool to feature since it would've of sucked to carry my bag since I had a flight at 7 and checkout was 12. Overall I really glad I stayed here. !cheers¡ read more

Hotel Vertigo will be an amazing hotel once it's finished later this year. I just stayed there over the weekend and the finishing touches were still being put on the lobby and lower floors. The staff was friendly and professional for our entire stay...I don't have any points for improvement. They serve free coffee and tea in the lobby every morning, but there are plenty of places to eat in the surrounding area. Hotel Vertigo will be opening Bar Florence in April of 09"...Chef Tyler Florence's first restaurant. Expect rates to go up, and room availability to go down once this happens. Our room was simple and beautiful, loots of white with orange accents on the bedding and furniture. Technology is a bonus here...there's an ipod dock/clock in every room, along with a nice 32" flatscreen television for that lazy morning movie (they have premium movie channels). The bathroom is small but functional...bright and clean with an interesting alligator tile throughout. Once you're done showering, make sure to give their custom Vertigo robes a try...they are extremely soft and comfortable (makes you want to steal them). My only issue with the room was the tiny wall heater, it was slightly noisy but managed to warm the room up with surprising success. You may also notice that you can hear a lot movement from the other rooms...but that was expected from such an old building. Try to avoid the Valet parking at a ridiculous $40...there's a parking garage one block away that does overnight parking for $21. Queen size bed = $79 a night read more

Overpriced. Photos on the website make the hotel look ultra modern, crisp and clean but this hotel boasts dingy furniture and rugs. The curtains in the penthouse were torn and the penthouse view was obstructed by a wall that surrounds the roof below. Room was not made up on day one because "the do not disturb sign was on". It was and clearly displayed the side that said "make it up". A knock would have resolved it. Don't book this place. read more

We booked a room with double beds at Hotel Vertigo during a holiday weekend and paid $100 less for it than any other room in the area. The hotel is small but the rooms are very cute and comfortable. The hotel is 6 blocks away from union square where you find plenty of restaurants and upscale shopping The area also offers good restaurants and coffee shops. The hotel itself has very nice smelling toiletries and free coffee/tea downstairs. We parked on the street (which was pure luck) and paid nothing for parking. There is a lot a block away that charges $21 per night. read more

I'm a fan of staying at modern hotels but I opted to stay here for the weekend just because I wanted to keep it low key for the weekend. The front desk agents were all friendly and it literally took 10MIN. to check in and get situated in our room. I liked the quirky decor, super clean rooms, and the bathroom (especially the awesome shower head). Parking kinda sucks so we had to park in a garage one night and valet the other night ): but everything went smoothly. My boyfriend had a headache int he morning and they were nice enough to run down to the local store to grab us some medicine since they didn't have anymore in the first aid kits! I thought that was so nice of them! I recommend this place to anyone looking for a cheap and fun place to stay. read more

In the process of becoming what will be a lovely modern respite in San Francisco, Hotel Vertigo made our stay comfortable, luxurious and for the most part very pleasant. Utterly transformed from the old look you might recognize from the movie of the same name, Vertigo has a hip color palette of cool grey, white, orange and brown carried throughout the entire space. The look is one hundred percent unique. What you see in their photos truly is what you will get and frankly they probably should have altered the model a tad for smaller rooms such as ours to make everything fit better. But the amenities were great such as the beautiful sink and very handy to have iPod dock alarm clock (sans instructions on how to set the alarm). Still it was very nice to be able to listen to our music while getting ready to hit the town. The H2O Spa products in the bathroom were a pleasant surprise and you'll have trouble walking away without the incredibly soft bathrobes (you can of course buy them). I found the orange glow that seeps out of the rooms when a door is open intriguing. It has such a Noir sense about it that I just have to mention it here. Hotel Veritgo is under construction but this lets you stay in a beautiful new room at a fraction of the cost. You will have to deal with construction but knowing that going into it was fine for us. However they need to find a better balance on how to do the construction in the Lobby when a guest is there trying to check in or get help. The couple of times we needed to stop at the desk we could barely hear for the work being done right next to us. Also, no continental breakfast? I'm not sure. I thought we were told there was, but never saw it. Not a problem since there was a great little dinner at the end of the block as well as a few cafes nearby. The staff was very helpful, arranging airport service at the end of our stay, providing new linens when asked and we were able to extend our stay for a reasonable cost which really helped us out. For those who have Zip Car, a big plus is there are a number of locations right by the hotel, as close as a block away even. I really enjoyed this hotel and hope to stay here again if we don't try out one of the other Personality Hotels. read more

When doing research for my next trip to my favorite town of San Francisco, the Hotel Vertigo (formerly York Hotel) had always caught my eye. I knew I wanted to try it out one day. So for my big 3-0 I booked 4 nights and I was not disappointed. I love the way it is modernly decorated. They play cool music in the lobby and show the film Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock on the screen there as well, of course. The lobby looks awesome and there is plenty of seating. They have great bell and concierge service. Everyone was really friendly. The hotel has a small gym you can access while you stay. The room is clean and modern as well. Walking to shops and eateries was great. I got a lot of exercise and walked the stairs a few times to and from the 7th floor. There is free WiFi. The hotel also tries to be eco-friendly (along with the whole city of SF.) I absolutely loved my stay at the Hotel Vertigo! Now onto the few (and truly trivial) minuses of the place: The parking in San Francisco always stinks so the $35 + tax a day valet service fee shouldn't surprise you. Aside from the parking, they do not offer a full breakfast but do have coffee, tea, and snacks in the lobby as well as a computer and printer for internet use. There is not ONE microwave to use in the building. According to the front desk, "people do stupid things." LOL... So that was a bummer. No leftovers in the room :( The rooms in the windows have NO screens. I was on the 7th floor and that was very scary. The windows are old and hard to open, which is okay. But when the room got stuffy, I liked having it open. I was just hoping I wouldn't forget while the sheers were closed and go falling out :/ Definitely something they should consider fixing!! Not to mention the bug bites I got with the window open were not fun. Some of the finishes didn't match in the room and bathroom. The bathroom door opened out into the room's hall instead of into the bathroom which created a cramped situation with the closet and main door all opening in as well. The bathroom had a lot of wasted space and no counter space. The shelf in the shower corner was useless as it was not level and EVERYTHING slid off. The shower itself was amazing though. The mirror was crooked and the vanity cabinet was awkwardly installed. I don't know if these quirks were in keeping with the vertigo theme, but it's no excuse for sloppy work. There is no central AC or AC unit but there is a wall heater for the winter. There was a weird refrigerator safe in the room. Yes, refrigerator safe. That was a first. As I mentioned before, these are merely trivial observations and should not prevent you from staying here!! The location is great and I walked to a lot of eateries and shops. The bed and bedding was amazingly comfortable! I slept like a baby. The walk in closet with dresser and safe was awesome and great for long stays! It's definitely worth the price. You won't regret it. It's a great place to start and end your adventure in beautiful SF. read more

As soon as we entered the lobby we noticed how clean & beautiful it was! Not to mention the wonderful staff , and quick check in! We got a room on the 7th floor , room was spacious, clean & ok view! It's not noisy at all either. On this very block they have two breakfast restaurants that are very good! Only 1 min walk away. My family really loved this hotel, the location was a big plus. read more

Everything about this place was nice, but in a "cool" way. The TV behind the front desk plays a loop of Hitchcock's "Vertigo", a nice touch. Bathroom amenities were a tad nicer than usual, and the towels were quite luxurious. They offer free WIFI. The staff was also great in suggesting local places to go, which was nice. Apparently they do some kind of coffee/breakfast thing in the morning, but I never bothered with it. I'm deducting a star because: 1. $35 a day for parking is ridiculous. I don't care if it's valet, I can park it down the street for half that price. 2. After housekeeping cleaned every day, they would turn the heat off. Thanks for bringing in the Artctic cold front while I was gone, jerks. But seriously, they could have just turned it DOWN-off was overdoing it. Tip: I streamed video just fine on their "Basic WIFI". Don't pay for the enhanced service. read more

This was the place to crash on New Years eve. I have to be honest, my first impression as i walked in the lobby was " oh shit," lol, BUT once we checked in and got my stuff to my room my reaction changed to " oh shit, this is actually nice" lol Great room, recently remodeled, comfy bed, the bathroom had all you could ever need and overall nice room ( it had and ipod/iphone deck-sound system which was perfect) . This is a new kind of hotel that will definitely be popular when its completely redone ( hence the initial impression ) Definitely not for Parents with kids or Grandma and Grandpa's little getaway trip. if i had to resume and describe this hotel to someone it would be, A W Hotel in the making. I'm planning on coming back so please guys don't disappoint me. read more

Quirky, down to the movie showing behind the checkin desk and the old world feel. Rooms are clean, seemingly renovated in the last 10 years, nicely attired. i personally enjoyed the creaky stairs but some may find that a black mark. the pix of the rooms are very accurate. and yes, there is no a/c. not a problem for my stay but maybe others will have an issue with it in a hotter month. Staff was great; friendly and helpful. Everything you'd want them to be. Beds were pretty nice, especially for a hotel and I liked the bathrooms a lot. FREE Wifi! FINALLY a hotel that gets it (ARE YOU LISTENING HILTON AND EMBASSY SUITES??) I WILL be back there. read more

Not sure where to start. The reception staff are rude and indifferent. The front desk looks like a garage sale wi plastic tubs and food wrappers all over. The rooms are seemingly clean - but that's where it goes downhill. threadbare towels (they were so bad one ripped after the shower) there is no air conditioning. (my room had no climate control or cooling option), the television had 3 channels (not even free to air). Location less than 2 blocks from a very sketchy part of tenderloin. Avoid this place. read more

Of the hotels we've stayed at in the city this has been my favorite. We stayed in a renovated queen room. Pros: Decor is nice kind of a Kelly Werstler-esk design ascetic with molding and qurky porcelain headed lighting fixtures. The bed and the linens were nice. I liked the robes they were a nice touch. The cons: The hotel staff were completely cold. You may as well hire robots. Once in the 4 night stay did they say hello. The elevator is very slow. The tolletre are generic crapola, bring your own soap. A vending machine selling water would be nice. Finally they start banging around and cleaning at 9am so if you party hard at any of the great bars near by you'll be in for a rood awakinig. My Conclusion, Because of the price and attractive decor it ends up being a good place to stay. read more

Loved my stay in the vertigo. King bed. Price was unbeatable for the long Valentines weekend. No AC REALLY sucked because it got sort of hot in there on a cold SF day IYKWIM ;) The shower holder thing was broken on there too which was a huge drag but no biggie. Never heard any noise, the bed was impossibly fluffy and easy to fall asleep in, and our room was so cute and modern. A romantic and adorable home away from home on our vacation :) P.S. the wifi here is really bad so don't expect that to be good. Bring a hotspot. read more

We had a great stay here. Pros: great price Good size room Free WI-fi Nice remodel Good sleep-fairly quiet (it was a Tuesday night though!) modern remodel while still keeping unique character of an older hotel. Dropped off our bags early and they held our bags all day after we checked out-very helpful. Cons: gruff clerk upon check-in Ice machine only in lobby Not a lot right near hotel (cafes,bars...etc) 1 small elevator Not many cable channels (1/2 are infomercial channels). Overall we were really pleased. Great value for the price. I guess some rooms have not been remodeled? Ours was and was a generous size with nice modern style furnishings. We liked that the hotel still had an unique older character to it. Some people may not like the lack of modern amenities though: no vending or ice machines on each floor, smallish hallways, one small elevator, some areas a little worn looking. We liked the old boutique feeling and the fact it did not feel pretentious or stuffy at all. Oh, nice lobby design too! read more

Nice hotel in the city. We stayed awhile back and only paid about $100 for the room. The lobby was super nice and everything looked new. When you go up to the rooms you can tell the age of the building but our room was decent. Nothing really complain about but nothing to boast about either. read more

Based on previous reviews I was a little worried. This place is amazing, super cute, clean and roomy. Bathroom was big and looked remodeled. Our view was out to the main street and the fire escape access was really cool, you're able to open the window, climb out and sit on the fire escape, not sure if you're allowed though. The staff was very friendly and they have free coffee every morning. Close to anything you could need from markets, Walgreen, bars, restaurants, etc. Will definitely stay again. read more

I looked at a lot of different hotels while planning my trip to San Francisco. There are so many to choose from that it was a little overwhelming. I eventually stumbled upon Hotel Vertigo during my search and knew right away that it was where I wanted to stay.The location and price appealed to me and I liked the way the rooms are decorated. I am also a movie geek so the Hitchcock connection was a huge plus as well. Now that I have returned home I have to say that Vertigo lived up to all my expectations. The staff were very friendly. The gentleman who checked me in was particularly nice. The room was clean and looked like it does in the pictures. It is in a nice location with Union Square and the Powell St. BART station within walking distance. As someone else on here mentioned the walk back from BART is uphill. It is not too steep and I had no problems with it but it is steep enough that those with physical limitations may have some difficulties. Although, honestly, you are going to have hills to climb pretty much anywhere you stay in San Francisco. And, I have to say, the stairs Hitchcock used for Vertigo really are something to see. We went up to the top floor and looked down. I thought I was prepared for whatever but it still made my head spin and I cried out loud enough that I believe I startled a maid standing nearby. Sorry about that Ms. Maid. My trip to San Francisco was a great experience and Hotel Vertigo was a big part of it. Thanks to everyone for being so nice and helpful. read more

Crashed here with friend's after celebrating a friend's b-day out in SF. Nice and modern and really comfortable beds! Central to Union Square if needed and some late night food options and convenience stores several store fronts down. Had some issues getting a taxi but the front desk guy was helpful to suggest we go down a couple of streets to catch one. read more

Chic decor, clean rooms, spacious bathrooms & nice bath products, and helpful staff. This was a great choice for our quick overnight stay in SF without breaking the bank. The only minor complaint that I had is that there is one small, slow elevator that is also used by housekeeping so it can take some time during peak times. read more

Stayed here for an event at the Regency Center this past weekend. Good location with lots of neighboring cafes, diners and liquor/convienence store. The hotel itself is nicely renovated, modern chic, clean and very welcoming. From what I experienced, the staff were helpful and very nice. What won me over was how ridiculously comfortable the beds were! The comforter/sheets were seriously a million thread count or something, I felt like I was sleeping in clouds! Extremely impressed. Everything from the entire hotel down to the room was very pleasing to the eyes. However, I docked off 1 star for the paper thin walls and doors. It wasn't pleasant to have loud talking guests at 6AM. Would come back if in the area! read more

This is a nice boutique hotel. The decor is nice, the beds are comfy, and the customer service was excellent! Its also a few blocks away from the shops of Union Square. I would say a 5-10 minute walk, so the location is great. They were in the midst of renovations during my stay (looks like theyre adding a restaurant), so this place will only get better! My only complaint is that the elevator runs a little slow. A note of concern is that the rooms dont seem to have air conditioning (they do have a powerful ceiling fan though). I stayed in the early spring so heat was not an issue. I dont know if that would be the case if I were to stay during the hot summer months. All and all, this place is a gem and I would definitely stay here again! read more

My 2nd time to Hotel Vertigo! This time, I stayed in Petite Queen Room. After I made the reservation, I kinda worried with Petite size room since the Deluxe Queen was very roomy and the room was fabulous. I guess I worried for nothing :) When I walked in, it felt like the room is little small, but it was just right size for us and the room had everything what we wanted (fridge, comfortable bed, desk, coffee makers, big flat tv, heater, free wifi and etc) just like the deluxe queen room. The main thing I really appreciate/thank to Vertigo is that they really read/listen to your comments. While I was booking, I jot down concerns/several comments of specific things (ex: room location of one of them) and they took care of everything (Thank you Hotel Vertigo!!) Price: ($89-$99 Petite Queen / $99-$116 Deluxe Queen). Love the price for what you get from this hotel. Room: Petite Queen-it is fine for 2 people!!! but if you want more spaces to move around and do things, recommend you to get deluxe queen.It can get little cold at night since the building is old, but the heater is in the room and it warms up the room pretty quickly. Can be little noisy but it didn't really bothered me :) Restroom: Nice and clean. Just one thing it bothered me was the tub; It needed a little patch up & old but no problem to take shower. ETC: Love the fridge, free WIFI, coffee maker, TV, comfortable bed, ceiling fan, outside view over the window (window opens! Love the fresh Air!!), Easy access to Union Square: 3-4 blocks away from Powell St. (Union Square! and 8 blocks away from Japan Town) I believe they serve you bread and coffee in the lobby during certain hours, but never had chance to get them since I was sleeping till late lol! Vertigo Front Desk: Very friendly and helpful :) Smiling all the time! :D Overall: Hotel Vertigo is an old building, but renovated the rooms beautifully. Vertigo does not have bar or restaurants, but it is a such a great and comfortable hotel. There are plenty of restaurants and bars around the hotel. There is a small mart just couple buildings down to get anything you need, pizza restaurant, sandwich place and a delicious Mexican restaurant plus bakery across the building. I love this hotel! Stayed here Dec 30th-Jan 2. The hotel itself is cool for a boutique hotel. Definitely not a wow factor as you enter the lobby area but still nice. I felt the location is really good and close to almost everything. The rooms were nice and the beds were super comfy. It doesn't have central heat or ac but it does have a wall heater/fan thing that heats up the room pretty quick along with a ceiling fan for when the weather is warm. The decor of the room was modern and chic. It had a large LCD tv and fridge in the room which was really nice. Pretty big closet and newer safes. Free Wi-Fi and a computer you can use in the lobby. There's also some pretty good free coffee in the lobby area too. The stairwell in the hotel is a super cool pick to take. The only complaints I really have is the parking company they use, housekeeping forgot to give us towels and wash clothes on our last day there (even though we tipped everyday we stayed and are not messy people at all), and the Asian lady at the front desk who works the morning shift isn't really friendly and seems like she doesn't wanna be bothered. They only offer valet parking which cost $35/day and takes 20-30 mins on average for them to bring you your vehicle. Then on New Years Eve, they raised the price to $45 and there was no in and out privileges after 7pm that night. Like I said, it also takes about 20-30 mins for your car to be brought around which sometimes would take longer. Not to mention there's and extra $5 parking tax that the hotel doesn't tell you about. We learned that when we got our bill and checked out. I wondered why the valet guys never waited around for a tip. It's because they get the extra $5 a day for every car parked as their tips. When I went down to ask for towels, the Asian lady at the front desk didn't even say Sorry for the inconvenience, or even really care. She was just like what's the room #? and went back to whatever she was doing. Then, on our last day she forgot to call us when our car arrived and we were waiting in the room for like 45 mins till we went downstairs to print our boarding passes and noticed our car out front. She could really use some customer service classes. My girlfriend and I both work in the hospitality industry and felt the same way about her service. All in All though I would stay here again because of the location, price, the free Wi-Fi, and the comfy beds. I won't however use their valet service again and will def look for another parking structure close by to park in. read more

We came here for our honeymoon in late March, and booked through booking.com--it seemed to have the best rate. We booked about a week or so in advance--maybe if you book earlier you'd get a better deal? However we stayed in March, we looked at rates for the summer and they were a bit more. We chose a Deluxe Queen room. This was a nice and unique place at an affordable rate for being in the city. We were so glad we went with them--it was worth it to pay a little more and be in a better area and have nice amenities--you could pay a little less and be farther from the action, and have a not-so-nice room. The hotel is based around the Hitchcock film Vertigo--the decor has a 60's mid-century vibe. The staircase is reminiscent of the stair scene in the film (they also have an elevator so fear not). The room was fun and unique and not over-the-top. It was clean and well kept. The (large) bed was soft and comfortable and there was ample blanketry (a down blanket also). They gave us shampoo, conditioner, lotion and body wash everyday, and it was nice quality. A hair dryer was included. There was a shower (no tub) with 2 heads and a fold down seat. The room had a space heater (which we did not have need to use), and a ceiling fan. Being from a very hot Southern state, we were worried about the lack of AC, but apparently a lot of SF doesn't have central air and heat, and we soon realized we were fine without it. Just open the window if you feel a little warm. Overall a great deal--the rooms were clean and comfortable, we were close to some nice restaurants (the sandwich shop next door, Bite, was AWESOME!), and not too far a walk from fun things to do. read more

Love everything about this hotel. EVERYTHING. The lobby, the renovated guest rooms, the friendliness of the employee's and the great deal they will try to give you when you call to book a room versus booking through an online travel website. I saved 30% each night I was there. Rooms are normally $109 a night but I got it for $76 a night. Sweet! The Alfred Hitchcock classic 'Vertigo' was filmed here too! There is a little market right next door where you can get snacks to keep in your room fridge...plus there is an awesome Mexican spot across the street that's very affordable and delicious! Only downfall: their Accounting Manager is AWFUL! She's rude, snide and not at all helpful. God forbid you have to deal with her because of problems with them holding onto a deposit charge too long. She was the most obnoxious person I have ever dealt with.In my line of work I deal with clients all day long. Customer Service is incredibly important. I would stay there again....I just think it's very unfortunate that such a great hotel has such a tacky and rude woman running their accounts and dealing with my money. read more

We paid around $115/night- and it was worth it, but we'll probably try somewhere else next time. -Walking distance to everything you would need -Super friendly staff, clean rooms -Very cool history, renovated very nicely and looks just like the web photos -Nice Tazo tea selection downstairs at the coffee bar -Smelled good and right across the street from a cute coffee shop- Jin's Cafe Mostly all good, but here are the downfalls: -Bed and pillows were really hard and we were tossing and turning -The doors slam when you close them and it echos in the hall. Okay room for a budget stay between area and money neighborhood: nice cafe (Farm-table) couple blocks away. some nice restaurants, other than that, nothing much around though. We got a room overlooking neighbor's nice green backyard garden (thank you, front desk). However, the window can not be opened to let air in, so the room at times smells musty and humid (especially the bathroom). The room itself only has cosmetic looks, it's not a bad look except you can tell it's using old materials to re-fitting the room. The server forgot to clean the bathroom hence left no new towels. After we told the front desk, they efficiently changed it though. Overall, the staffs were nice and it's a young, hip looking hotel. Only if the air is fresher... My take: If you are not as picky as I am for a boutique vacation hotel (I want it to be a true designy space, after all, I paid big bucks for the design, the sheet count and the feeling of waking up to feel so refreshed as you are on vacation), then I suppose it's okay to stay for a few nights. If you are as picky as me when it comes to boutique hotels, then I suggest you look for something else. read more

Stayed here on our honeymoon for five nights and were very pleased. The hotel has a fun atmosphere and is not that expensive for the cleanliness and upscale design you get. Rooms were very clean and well designed, and the building has lots of character. Maid service every day if you want it and they keep the place tidy. Free WiFi for guests which is a huge plus, and basic cable in rooms with a nice TV. Overall the hotel has a very simple feel that doesn't try to hard. The front desk staff were mostly always helpful, upon check out there was a new lady there and she was very short with us, but otherwise no complaints. Easy to grab a taxi from here and head anywhere in the city. No room service but you can order out ( we did pizza several times) or walk across the street to Jin's Cafe. read more

The proximity to the ballpark is second to none. We previously stayed at the Hotel Via, which is also close to the ballpark, but the AC at Hotel Via did not work and the room was very tight, and the elevator was overimpacted with guests trying to get to the rooftop bar. That was not an issue at the Luma Hotel, as they have a dedicated elevator to the rooftop bar/restaurant, and the inside elevators are for guests use only. Moreover, the AC worked great. Best of all, the staff at Luma Hotel went above and beyond for us to ensure my entire family, my wife and our two kids, had an amazing stay. I cannot say enough good things about Eddy Prieto, who on several occassions made sure we had everything we needed, from providing water bottles, explaining how to get around, where the ice machine was located, how to use the ice machine (which took some skills) how to get on the wifi, to helping us plan our next trip to San Francisco Eddie really made us feel welcome and taken care. Any questions we had, Eddie made sure and gave us friendly and reliable advice. Kevin, the desk manager, also assisted in making sure my Electric Vehicle was fully charged by the time we checked out. Finally, Mazzin, the valet supervisor, assisted loading and unloading my truck which made things that much simpler in getting settled in and packing up. I am looking forward to my next trip to the Luma Hotel which will be coming up soon. I am attaching a few pictures from our stay. What a great view! Thank you again for an amazing stay.

The bathroom has a blue sensor light when you walk in which was perfect for the middle of the night. There is a full length mirror in the bathroom with LED lights around it which I also loved. The hotel is on the pricey side but I would stay here again. Definitely worth it.

The hotel has two restaurants, one for breakfast and one for bar and dinner. But there are so many good restaurants nearby as well. Convenient. I checked in late in the evening during a holiday weekend, and it was busy. The front lobby had two people checking in guests. When it was my turn at the counter, we were checked in pretty quickly and given a run down of the layout and weekend activities. Fresh water is provided right by the elevators so you can fill water bottles before heading to your rooms. And in the morning, hot coffee is provided right before you head out for the day. Pretty thoughtful. My stay was two nights, and the first night the street music and sounds came thru loud and clear. But the second night, it was quiet outside. So it's unpredictable if my stay would be relaxing or nerve racking. The room for 3 was a good size with a large bathroom, large windows of street view, and sizable writing desk, and arm chair. I got to use the gym once and it had all the general equipment and fairly large room. Upon check out, we received the kid welcome gift which was supposed to be at check in, but check in was chaotic so it was better late than never. And the staff were all very nice and friendly during our stay. We would come back to this location if we get the chance again.

Unfortunately, my dog had to have an emergency surgery that prevented me from being able to use my room. I called the hotel then Priceline then the hotel then Priceline. Back and forth trying to see if I could simply reschedule for a couple weeks out while paying the additional amount. The Omni refused. No reschedule. No refund. The ~$200, when I called well in advance of check in, was worth more to them than the customer. I've spoken to them employees at the hotel who expressed dissatisfaction with the management; I can see why. In a moment of distress for my family, the GM personally declined the refund. I learned a valuable lesson about booking non-refundable and will be looking for a new hotel.

They are always so friendly and accommodating. And It has been the same staff over the 3 years. I see the same friendly, familiar faces when I arrive and they greet me by name. They always remember that I love to have a tea kettle for my evening hot tea, So they have it sent to my room as soon as I arrive. I always get a king room and I've stayed on so many floors, The rooms are consistently clean and well maintained. I've never had a bad room experience in all of my stays. That has a lot to do with the amazing housekeeping crew. They come in daily to refresh and reset the room, So when I come in, the bed is made, the bathroom is refreshed everything is in place and reset. Not once have I ever had to ask for anything to be sent up to my room. It's all already taken care of. And let's talk about the breakfast setup! Because this is one of the best hotel breakfast I've ever had in my life. There's a hot bar with bacon, sausage and potatoes and eggs and it rotates daily. There's a yogurt bar with fresh fruit and even hard boiled eggs, there's always oatmeal with toppings. There's a center island filled with all of the carbs you can think of even tortillas. The bananas are always just ripe and that's rare. And there are two coffee stations one by the breakfast area and one by the front entry. I love the coffee! I really like the walkability of this hotel too! It's only a block from my office and very close to Oracle stadium as well as being close to the embarcadero walkway. I cannot say enough great things about this hotel and the crew. I love staying here and will always highly recommend this location. Tell them that I sent you! I want to say kudos to the leadership team because whatever you're doing, It's working and it should be duplicated in other hotels. See y'all next month!

Rooms can't go below 75 degrees, and if you ask them to fix it they'll twiddle with the buttons and tell you to check back in 30 minutes and it will still be 75 degrees. After hours of struggling in my extremely hot room (which cost $850, btw), I booked another hotel and requested a refund and the manager refused. (the rest of the staff was very nice, fwiw) This place is very low integrity. They don't care about the quality of the rooms or service, just how much they can exploit you for on the way out. Do not stay here under any circumstances.

I don't think they have AC. I did not need it, we had a fan, but I would ask about it in the summer months. It has everything you need and the staff is wonderful. They will guide you to where ever you want to go. There is so much to do right around there. The prices are fair. I loved the little seating area we had with great Victorian chairs.

However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. I was given no check in information, and there was no front desk. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. A horribly dingy hotel that can't even get its most basic sh*t together. Stay at this incompetently run hotel at your own risk or better yet find much better options.

We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to the Astor Suite, and the butler service made the stay feel even more special. Robson Boscarioli welcomed us to the suite, gave us a thoughtful introduction to its features, and arranged complimentary pressing. Later that evening, butler Arjun Saud surprised us with macarons, fresh fruit, and a personalized birthday message waiting in our room. One of our favorite touches was returning from dinner to find the room beautifully prepared for the evening. The turndown service, relaxing music, and pillow spray created such a welcoming atmosphere. I'd also like to thank Chief Concierge Daniel Rey, whose communication before our arrival helped make the celebration feel special from the very beginning. The hotel is beautiful, but what really stood out was the hospitality. Every interaction, from the concierge team and butlers to the front desk staff, felt warm, genuine, and attentive. Thank you to everyone at The St. Regis San Francisco for helping make my birthday celebration so memorable. We truly appreciated all of the thoughtful touches and look forward to returning.

Same for breakfast the next two days...20 minute wait to be seated, 15 minute wait to get order taken, and a 20 minute wait for food to be served. It gets boring quick having to wait so long. I was considering lowering my rating to 3 starts because of this. Other than that, the facilities are nice and the rooms are modern. The location is also convenient and walkable to most things on Market Street.

The building was sold in January and the business status is murky. All I know is, Marty and Connie were the beating heart and soul of this establishment. Unfortunately, people do age and eventually pass. I don't think that either of them has passed, but from what I heard, there was a sudden medical issue and they're not coming back. I hope that the new ownership can get it together and bring back this amazing place to continue as a gem of a place to stay in SF, but... not holding my breath. :-(

The hotel used to be quite a few other properties, so while they may have decorated it, it's not the luxurious experience we've had at other hotels. The views are to die for, we had a room that spanned windows from Golden Gate to Bay Bridge, it was amazing being on the 45th floor and seeing the night sky and morning sunrise. The property doesn't really have a real lobby, spa, and the restaurant is average, as in the quality of the food was just not top notch, and they have access to the best ingredients. They only have two elevators and are quite slow, at a busy time this can be quite annoying. The room itself was small, no real furniture, would have been nice to have a sofa and table with two chairs. There was no dresser. The bathroom was great for one, but small for two. The shower didn't have a bench, no his or her's sinks. The bed when we got into it was super soft and not supportive, when we called they did something really odd and put a board on the mattress and then a topper. I guess they have a guest that asks for this. Why didn't the service people know they have a firm version of the mattress topper they could have switched for us. We didn't have the best sleep. Again, usually the Four Seasons beds are amazing. While this property doesn't charge regular Four Seasons prices, it also doesn't deliver the experience and it would be a shame if the brand started doing this.

For those used to staying at JW Marriotts or similar level of luxury or higher, this property will…read morelikely feel underwhelming to you. Those that a hotel of this level is an infrequent splurge, or stay here with tempered expectations, may find it satisfying depending on the rate/perks you got. We paid a little over $300 a night including all fees/taxes but as AMEX Platinum members got extra credit and perks so our total credits/perks were worth about $300 total for the two nights including an $80/day breakfast credit. So it was about like staying for $150/night with no credits/perks. Given location/amenities, I think up to around $200/night would be a fair discount rate (as of Summer 2026) Location: is good for tourists and the area in general feels safe and clean as the city has cleaned this area up a bit from previous years. Parking: $94 a day for valet (no self park.) Yep, welcome to Downtown San Francisco. You could valet park in the small garage across the street for $32 but no in/out privileges. Lobby/Check-in: It's an atrium style hotel with lobby on the 3rd floor. Check-in was easy. Lobby is nice with a bar and lots of seating with a whole other seating area to the side and behind the bar. They have their climate control too cold though in the Lobby. Dining: There's only one restaurant at lobby level with just a view of the building next door. Prices are very high but short of outrageous considering you are in a JW in the middle of San Francisco. We thought it would be hard for 2 people to use the $80 credit for breakfast. Not so when average breakfast entrees are in the $33-$38 range. We also ate dinner in the restaurant. The food for both breakfast and dinner was excellent. Not Michelin Star level of course, and overpriced, but actually pretty quite good for a hotel restaurant. Note there is a setup for a Buffet Breakfast (were told it is $52/person when open) but they didn't run it on Saturday or Sunday so there was a bit of a wait to get a seat in the restaurant for breakfast. Rooms: Rooms are decent size and well-furnished in good condition but although they don't feel outdated, they feel a little 'tired around the edges' so to speak. If you want that freshly renovated feel, you won't get it here. Bathroom size is going to vary as our large corner room with a sitting area with table had a very small bathroom and our neighbors had a smaller room but with a decent size bathroom. Street noise was minimal on the 12th floor but if you are sensitive to the noise, I wouldn't go any lower than floor 10. Views will vary but likely will be of the side of another building through what I call 'prison windows' which is a smaller than average window opening inset within a concrete looking surround. Bed was comfortable, mattress was good but felt slightly stiff/tired as though it was probably getting near then end of its lifespan but still quite comfortable. Linens very good. So overall good beds but nothing to write home about. I had read the reviews and although I typically stay in this level of a hotel I had tempered my expectations and so the stay was satisfying and served its purpose with no unpleasant surprises. If you want to be less prone to having an overcharged feeling: a) Use valet across the street or SpotHero app to find cheaper in/out parking nearby (if you have a car) and b) don't bother eating/drinking in the hotel -- go elsewhere to non-hotel restaurants to eat and drink.

Makeup and Hair Design What a beautiful couple. The deco of the hotel was so beautifully decorated with art. So relaxing in the waiting area too. Expecially me being there so early at 5.30am. Inside my client room had such an amazing view too. A must stay hotel.

Oh wow. What a dump. Sorry for being so blunt about it. Let's start from construction onsite. Not a single word about it on their website or on Orbitz, or on Facebook. I wrote email to manager one day prior asking about upgrading (yes, you have to ask nowdays), he said NO unless i want to pay extra and once again never even mentioned remodeling. So the orange interior was great, all 5 feet of it. Then I had to deal with Christine, frontdesk representative. She was zero help and pretty rude. Rolling eyes and being smart ass about not having an Ice Machine. No apologies about remodeling, no explanation, no trying to make us feel welcomed. Room was pretty miserable. Size of my closet. Dark and stinky. No Ice Machine was just last drop. Oh and of course no gym, no room service. But once i asked Christine about it she gave me double of an attitude. I strongly suggest to not rent their rooms. Its horrid. Do yourself a favor and pay $50 extra per night and get a normal room. Vertigo is NO GO read more

This hotel is nice and retro. Stayed here a weekend with a bunch of my friends. It was clean and smelled nice. The room we got was a very nice and big for a room with two beds. The staff was very welcoming and nice, helped me out with all of my questions and made me feel comfortable. Next door they have a really cute place on the corner to have breakfast lunch or brunch, so yummy and convenient location wise. The hotel was located in a decent area of the city and there were restaurants and local stores all around making it convenient for us as guests. The venue we were going to was only about 10 mins walking distance and union square was that close too. Anyway over all good experience, great location, friendly staff, clean room, reasonable price, will be staying here again! read more

So it's absolutely sickening that a nice hotel like the vertigo has been turned into a homeless encampment where the owners get money from the city and these clowns are destroying the rooms and the neighborhood. For weeks the city has just thrown millions of dollars of taxpayer money into what? Housing drug addicts and prostitutes? People should be outraged. read more

2 rooms for $434 with taxes and fees for 3 nights. Good value. Decent location. Priceline rated it a 3.5 star property. Maybe a 3 if the cafe re opens and they give you thermostat control in your room. It has character - the staff helped make the experience enjoyable. read more
