Villa Convento will always hold a special place in my heart. On my very first trip to New Orleans I stayed at this charming, boutique hotel and returned a few times over the years. Rumored to be the original House of the Rising Sun, the hotel is haunted by spirits from the days when it operated as a bordello. This Creole Townhouse is adorned with Greek Revival accents and features 25 guest rooms. (Jimmy Buffet frequently stayed in room 305.) The walls are thin, the amenities aren't top notch, but the antique furniture adds to the charm. There's a small bar behind the front desk with snacks, soft drinks, & wine for purchase. During my visits, the staff were always friendly and welcoming. When I stayed here, they served a complimentary continental breakfast with croissants from Croissant D'Or, which is across the street. The croissants were so bomb; I had to ask where they came from. They told me they were from the café across the street. Now, I make it a point to walk to the café to get some when I'm in town and bring them home. They taste as good as the first time I had them during my stay at Villa Convento. read more

We had a pleasant stay at Villa Convento, felt it was a good price for a French Quarter location. The place is old, elevator is super slow but that was expected and I was glad to climb stairs to our room instead especially after all the great meals we had in NOLA. It was clean, room (#408) had everything we need (bigger shelf in shower would've been helped), it was quiet, we had two balconies and plenty of room. We were right in the middle of things, super convenient location especially if you plan to stay put in the French Quarter. Heard a rumor that renovations are to begin soon but didn't confirm with hotel staff. We'll definitely stay here again. Oh and the place across the street is great for breakfast--Croissant D'or. We had breakfast two of the mornings we were there. Great food and coffee. read more

Great coffee, but no hot water for three days The staff, especially the front desk, is wonderfully warm and friendly. My husband and l enjoyed having freshly brewed (strong) coffee available every morning right downstairs. However, we were there for three days, and other than one late afternoon, we were never able to have a hot (or even warm) shower. Even after bringing it up to the manager, nothing was changed. It seemed once housekeeping arrived, and started laundry, little hot water was left for the guests. Maybe we just had a bad room, but it made for a very uncomfortable trip considering NOLA was also experiencing record cold temps in the 30-40°F. read more

Great location within the quarter and interesting back story, history. This place needs a good scrubbing and some TLC. For what they're charging and based on the pictures on their website I did expect better. I would give this hotel a 3/10 in cleanliness lots of cobwebs/dust in the room on the AC unit and fans. There's a lot of charm here and the staff is amazing. My only issue is that while there-my room smelled like mildew and urine. The only other room available smelled like sewage. This was back in September 2024, so the issue may have been fixed but this was a very difficult thing to get past. The towels smelled fine and the room was as clean as a room in the FQ could be. I'm not sure where it came from but for that reason I wouldn't stay here again. The other rooms must be fine because they have good reviews-but mine was not. Again the staff was as kind as could be and very helpful. It's right within walking distance of great bars and restaurants too so that's in its favor. read more

This is a very moderately priced hotel within walking distance of the entire Quarter, both the French and Frenchman sides. Tons of bars and great food options, as well as proximity to the many historic museums. The accommodations are not great, but hold historic value. I did have a number of weird ghostly experiences in my room. Something would hide an item of mine at night after I'm in, then reappear in the morning before anyone entering my room, can't explain it, but it did happen and I was by myself. I loved staying here. We stayed for 4 nights. Couldn't ask for a better location. The guy at the front desk was awesome and check in was easy. The elevator made us chuckle every time. The room was clean and was thankful to have a refrigerator. As for haunted, I would say yes. We had some unexplainable and strange incidents. We do some amateur ghost hunting and have a few gadgets. We got some EVP's, lots of orbs and strange noises IN THE room that actually woke me several times. We got lucky with parking. Had parking right on Chartres St. Loved having the little breakfast spot across the street from the hotel. We come to New Orleans often and so far this is my favorite place to stay. Not fancy. Very home feeling. Will definitely stay here again. read more

Here's the deal, this place needs some help. It needs to be cleaned better in the hallways and it needs some major updates. However, the staff was great. The location is phenomneal. Also, the room was bigger than we thought. the views and patio are nice. the price was even better. also, we always felt safe. we got the room on the 4th floor that was 1 bedroom with a queen and a full bed. for 3 people and a 3 night stay, this was great. the patio is not connected to our room, but you walk into the hallway and head outside. the downstairs patio area is nice also, plenty of seats, greenery and plants to admire. the eleveator works, but is super sketchy. where the place sucked was the water pressure and the water temp. it was weak and not super hot. we also were greeted in our bathroom by a gift. someone had left a douche in a box here for us. it was on the top shelf behind the toilet. pretty nasty that the staff left it there. our room was clean, we had a fridge that worked fine. also we had a fan and an AC - both worked very well. would i stay here again? yes. our room was clean, had space, comfy bed, good staff, and great location. read more

We have been coming to this hotel probably 1997. It is our happy place. The room is beautiful with antique furniture, and beautiful bedding. The bed was so comfortable in fact that I felt like I was at home sleeping on my sleep number bed. The only thing missing was my big dog. The employees here are all so accommodating and helpful. Being in a wheelchair I really appreciate the fact that there is a handicapped accessible room. This hotel was built in the 1800s and you have done good job making the room as accessible as possible. If the door had opened outwards would be the only thing that would improve the situation. So many people helped us. I wish I could remember all their names from the time I made the reservation six months ago up until the minute we left. Everything was perfect. Thank you for once again making our honeymoon get away. Perfect in every way. read more

On my third visit to New Orleans, I knew I wanted to stay in a place that had history. Hotel Villa Convento met my expectations. It may be be too simple for people that like extra provisions and find the rooms too old. I would recommend getting a room with a balcony. Wonderful gem in the French Quarter!! This is not "luxury" per se, just a comfortable, safe, affordable place to enjoy in New Orleans. The location could not be better--- just 3-5 minutes away from dozens of enjoyable bars and restaurants on Bourbon and Royal streets. Far away enough from the center of action so you don't have to hear everything in your room all night. I stayed in Room 205 and had absolutely no problems with water pressure, temperature, nor wifi, they were all perfect. The fridge/ freezer were wonderful assets and kept my goodies well chilled. Sadly, unlike other reviewers, I had no apparitions. Oh well. I would recommend bringing ear plugs if you're there for a festival or special occasion. It's an older building, and noise carries. It wasn't a problem this week, but could imagine how drunk people laughing and fighting could be annoying if it was a busy weekend. Extra credit and acknowledgement must be given where it is due -- the staff is exceptional. They are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, kind. Dewayne especially is a WEALTH of information and can tell you almost anything about anything in New Orleans (and probably nearly any other subject if you ask). [Pro Tip: The breakfast cafe right across the street -- Croissant D'Or is amazing!] I would stay here again. As a matter of fact, I've already made my reservation for next year. I rarely ever do that, but don't want to lose out once everyone figures out how great this place is. 4.5 stars! read more

The only reason to stay here is due to the location. For over $200 a night, the dirt and condition of this hotel was not worth it. Only amenities are coffee, ice and vending machines. The place looks charming at first glance, but once you spend some time and look around that quickly changes. We only slept here, so it worked out great for us, but be aware that you can pay the same thing for a chain hotel just on canal street. There was dirt, dust, signs of mold and the cracked tile in the courtyard is a tripping/safety hazard. The only thing that would bring us back here is the location and Darren who was a super great guy and gave us some great suggestions. read more

I had the opportunity to spend 5 days at this hotel while visiting New Orleans. This is an incredible place to stay. It is a boutique hotel that had opportunity for friends/family to be in a relaxed atmosphere. The courtyard was a perfect place for visiting. We had a number of the rooms booked. The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating at the front desk. The house keeping staff were efficient and very hospitable. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable. This is an old building. The room was a good size. The bathroom didn't have a lot of counter space, but had everything else you would need. The towels were thin and small. The water took a little while to get hot, but we never ran out. The beds were not especially comfortable. There is a coffee bar in the lobby and it was well stocked with coffee/tea/creamer. The parking garage is a good walk away. It was awesome that there was a safe place to park your vehicle. read more

I just booked a second stay at The Hotel Villa Convento for my upcoming vacation in February 2018. This boutique accommodation is just the right fit for me with it's budget friendly rates, cool quirky charm and its warm and hospitable staff. Their location on a quiet residential street is an easy 10 minute walk to all the main places that myself or anyone else would want to go. From there you can easily head over to the party on Bourbon Street, the shopping on Royal Street, the food at Café du Monde and The French Market and the history of Jackson Square. If that's not enough, there's even a cute little patisserie just across the street for your morning coffee and pastry. Now the Hotel Villa Convento is not for everyone and frankly it's not meant to be. If you're looking for posh and pampered luxury, keep looking as this is not your place. It's appeal comes from the fact that this unique 25 room hotel is a little rustic with cracks in the stone steps, chipped paint and some worn carpet here and there. I'm cool with that. It's just a part of staying in a structure that was built in 1833. It's a unique French Quarter experience for anyone looking for a little shabby charm, a clean comfy bed, a little quirkiness and some really friendly people. This agreeable old world style hotel might just be your place to try on your next visit. It worked for me the last time. I trust it will again. Very cool little place. Positives- Darren at the front desk gets 5 stars! He was awesome. The place is creepy cool. Not the Marriott...so don't book if that's what you are looking for. It's rustic with awesome charm. The bed- super comfy. Room was spacious enough for two. Little fridge for snacks and water. The air conditioner worked perfect- and we like it cold!! Bathroom shower had good water pressure (we were on the 1st floor). The little outdoor patio area was very nice and had a vending machine with everything $1 as opposed to regular insane high vending machine costs. Coffee (was great) and front check-in area was also very nice and comfortable. Location was AMAZING- close to some great things and we felt safe even walking back late at night. Just obviously be aware. Negatives- our room was in desperate need of a paint job. The walls were filthy. And if I'm being picky, things were just mismatched. Burgundy curtains, with teal comforter brown chair and weird dirty blue walls...just a more cohesive design would make it visually much better. The perfect little place for a quick weekend in NOLA. Look, you're not at a typical big box hotel so throw those expectations out of the window. But if you are looking for a clean, safe spot to plop down for a weekend, look no further! It all started at check in where Dwayne was so kind to set me up right before he clocked out at 12am. The room itself was clean and quiet, everything I needed. It is very barebones, but extremely affordable as a solo traveler. And the location - couldn't be more perfect! Darren at the front desk was great and helped add to our great experience. Location is great. Verti Marte, the LaLaurie Mansion, and the Ursuline Convent are about a block or less away. The French Market is a 5-minute walk. I highly recommend this property if you are looking for peace and quiet. ***Do not read the below if you are afraid of the paranormal*** We stayed in room 208 and during the course of 2 nights my daughter woke up to see apparitions. The first night she saw an older lady in a gown sitting in the corner chair just staring/observing me while I slept. I booked online through their website direct for a 3 night birthday trip and unfortunately my flight got canceled last minute due to the weather and they would not refund me my $224 deposit! The history of the building is what drew me to getting a room there. Great location near Bourbon and Frenchway. It's quiet and safe. We stayed in 401 which was a large suite with 2 balconies that have views of the city but not the street, which was fine because the skyline view was amazing. No bugs and the room was clean, but very dated, which should not be a surprise. It has an AC window Unit and a ceiling fan over bed. The negatives? TV only had a few channels and the WiFi was awful. Friendly front desk except one guy (with glasses and tall slender dude) was not the friendliest, but I'm not an overly sensitive type I guy so who cares. The elevator kind of freaked us out because it's slow, but quickly got used to it. All in all we liked the place! It's old world New Orleans in an 1833 built brothel. read more

We stayed in one of the two rooms on the top floor, Room 401. It is my understanding there are only 25 or so rooms to the entire hotel. I would love to give this place a bad review so that it isn't booked when I want to try and get a room but I simply don't have the heart to lie. I was extremely apprehensive booking when I read so many terrible reviews. People said it was filthy, wet, etc. Listen, unless you live in a crystal palace and won't drink anything except Dom Perignon, this place should not offend you. It is reflective of all of New Orleans. It's old and yes, the entire town is held together by centuries of paint, but it had the kind of charm I would want coming to this town. My room was clean, the AC ran cold and there wasn't hair or anything nasty in places that command cleanliness like the bathroom, fridge and linens. Yeah, the elevator "complains a lot" as the concierge forewarned (though the lack of air moment was my biggest issue there), but knowing that isn't a defect, it's simply how the old elevator sounds, we had no concerns or issues. And we were on the fourth floor and honestly, the steps weren't too terrible to take. Speaking of, the fourth floor was lovely. To clarify a question I had, each of the two rooms available up top have their own private balcony and one shared but don't be concerned. The door from your room to the shared balcony can be locked and has heavy drapery. For 401, the door was located in the side room with the daybed and not the main sleeping area off which the access was to the private balcony. My husband was shocked but admitted I was right- the location is quiet yet still conveniently located within short walking distance of the attractions. We did not bring a car as the taxis from the airport to hotel are a flat rate $36- and when you see the car and foot traffic in town, you'll know it was WELL worth the $36! The ONLY reason I gave a 1 star is because of the balcony. This place is HORRIBLE and DISGUSTING! The shower had a little dribble of pressure, NO hot water, homeless sleeping right in front of the door across the street absolutely NO security. I stayed with my young daughter and we were too scared to go to sleep. The bald man at the front desk was horribly rude! We had to park 6 blocks away and paid 30 a day, 60 total. The "garage" they have is a completely dangerous place and again, no security. First time in New Orleans and my last due to this place, it ruined it for me. BEWARE, the pictures and website are deceiving. Go down the street to a cleaner more secured motel. read more

Parking is an old warehouse off Frenchman street. Only 6 spots available and snug. Suggestion get a balcony with an overhang if you plan to spend anytime on it. Rain is almost always in NOLA. Street view is nice with the Mule Carriages, Since this is the Hotel of the "Rising Sun" they come by. I read other reviews about the homeless, towels having to be brought to lobby, etc. Price very reasonable for a French Quarter hotel. There were homeless in doorways across the street, but they were gone early in the morning. Sadly, NOLA has a homeless problem. Elevator was slow and noisy but we took the stairs. We did have to exchange towels daily. This hotel does not have the extra's of corporate chain hotels. Staff was friendly, but did not go out of the Lobby area - You had to engage them. First things first: Lane, from the front desk, was the best! He was extraordinarily kind, gave us awesome suggestions, and really made our stay an all around great experience; so much so that we ended staying an extra day at the hotel in NOLA. This was the first hotel of several on our vacation with several stops, but by the end of the stay even with the extra day, I was not ready to leave at all. This place is for reals walking distance from pretty much anything in the Quarter, and it's stumbling distance from Lafitte's Blacksmith, which has the BEST Hurricane I have ever had. This place is old-school New Orleans charm. It's seemingly unchanged from it's days as the House of the Rising Sun, and staying here was like stepping back in time. This is not The Hilton or The Ritz, but this is the basis of it's appeal. Do you REALLY want to go to New Orleans and stay somewhere with no soul? I didn't think so. My husband and I disagree about the authenticity of our paranormal encounter; he thinks it was gravity, and I am convinced there was something other-worldly about the way the blinds opened. Coming to NOLA for most of my life with my parents, we always stayed at one particular hotel. Now that I am off starting my own family, it seems fitting that I start creating some traditions of my own. I will be staying here any time I am in New Orleans and would recommend it to anyone heading in to The Big Easy. read more

Quiet, clean, and a fantastic location given the hotel's moderate price. The staff was also super helpful, whether it was recommending places for me to go running in the morning or arranging a veritable fleet of airport taxis for all of the people in my party. In fact, I wish I could give this place another star based on the staff alone! Unfortunately, this hotel is quite run down. Large swatches of paint missing from the wall, light bulbs missing from lamps, carpet falling off of stairs, musty smells, and a shower that scalds you every time someone in a nearby room flushes a toilet. Now normally that stuff wouldn't have bothered me, and this rating would be up another star. (I'm no prima donna, and I get that when you're paying an affordable price for a fantastic location, there are going to be some trade offs.) But I happened to stay in one of the loft rooms, and while the king bed on the first floor was perfectly comfortable, the twin loft mattress that I wound up sleeping on was *awful*. After four nights on that thing my back was seriously unhappy, so minus a star for the bed. Other things to note are that while some would refer to this place as a B&B it actually does not serve breakfast, although there is an adorable bakery across the street. Also, the parking garage is kind of a pain in the ass--the front desk keeps one key attached to a giant block of wood (think gas station bathroom) and the garage is a couple of blocks away, so the process of parking can take a while if the key is out when you need it. In conclusion: A+ staff, A+ location, D- bed. read more

This hotel was absolutely perfect for us. The accommodations are not what you could call modern, but it has a charm that matches the city. If you want the true New Orleans experience, I highly recommend this location. Firstly, the staff here is fantastic. We mostly spoke to and made arrangements with Lane at the front desk who was absolutely delightful. He had fantastic recommendations as to where to eat, what to do, and was able to handle all of our requests. We were initially placed in room 302, which has a queen bed with a balcony. One wall is exposed brick and the ceiling is very high. We stayed here for our first two nights, and then we decided to extend our stay because we were having such a good time in NOLA and we really liked the hotel. Room 302 was already booked for the next night, but Lane was able to accommodate us in room 304 for our final night. This room is larger, but has no balcony. It also was a queen but had a day bed as well. Both rooms were fantastic for us. A previous yelper stated that the window AC units were inadequate, but I have to say that in both of our rooms...in June... were more than adequate to cool our entire rooms, and there was also overhead fans in both. We had no trouble keeping cool. This place is extremely conveniently located. Our first night, on Lane's recommendation, we went out for late night po-boys at NOLA Po-boys, less than 2 blocks away, and they were a highlight of our trip. Directly across the street was an amazing patisserie where on our first morning we got quiches, chocolate croissants, and cafe au lait with chickoree coffee, all of which were the best we had on our trip. 2 blocks from Bourbon Street, and yet still in a quiet enough area that you can sleep when you want. The best hurricanes in NOLA are about 3 blocks away at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop (using real juice and a shot of 151 on top!) so don't waste your time with Pat O'brians. Although, if you still insist, Pat's is only about 3 blocks too. They say this place is haunted. My wife and I disagree on whether we had an encounter. She says that we did, I say it was gravity, but the debate which ensued was all part of the fun for us. The parking garage is kinda far, and its first come first served with only about 8 spots. So I recommend sorting this out with the front desk upon arrival. You may have to street park the first night, but no biggie. All together, we had an amazing time in NOLA and this hotel was a large contributing factor to it. The wife and I have stated openly that upon our return to NOLA, that this will be the place we stay going forward. A huge thanks goes out to the staff here and mostly Lane for making our stay so special and wonderful. read more

A solid 3 stars. It's not your Hilton or Marriott, but that's also why we decided to stay here. The staff was great. The room was clean. However, there was a certain odor to the room that reminded me of a not-so-clean family vacation spot we do every year. History of that aside, I'd most likely stay here again. The ease and location close to everything is beyond convenient. Besides, you're not visiting the hotel... You're visiting New Orleans. Our room was 101, just next to the very cute courtyard. Thank goodness for our AC unit which helped with the humidity. We always had fresh towels and the bed was always made. The bed was a bit stiff, but not horrible. My parents' room (205) had a leak coming from the window/AC unit. They had a floor unit, but it didn't produce any cold air. Unfortunately, the hotel was fully booked during our stay so they were unable to relocate my parents or even fix the leak. As I said, I'm not visiting the hotel. I'm visiting the city. As long as I have a place to sleep and wash up, I'm good to go. read more

This was a very nice old style hotel in New Orleans' French Quarter. The woman at the front desk was EXTREMELY nice and helpful. It's clear that she knows the area very well and had great suggestions on how to do what we wanted to do, and places to go. The hotel was an adorable brick building with the classic French quarter iron fencing/balconies. There was an outdoor enclosed courtyard and a balcony at the top with a view of downtown. My only qualm was that some things were not repaired, such as peeling wall paper, which in my opinion is not a big deal. Highly recommend. read more

The good: the staff was nice. The front desk is closed overnight, but everyone I interacted with was pleasant. The decor is hilarious (a skeleton at the piano in the parlor). The location is pretty ideal. The bad: 1) The A/C didn't work. We notified the front desk at check in and he "fixed" it while we were out that day. When we returned that night, it was still not working and the front desk was closed. When I notified the front desk the next morning, she immediately inspected it and advised it would be that afternoon before they could fix it. 2) The A/C worked. Sometimes, having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. They "fixed the A/C", and for the remainder of the trip, it sounded like a pebble being sucked up into a vacuum cleaner. There was no way to adjust the temperature either. 3) The bathroom had a small leak (I think a pipe in the wall). The tub was ancient, rusty, and surrounded by black mold. When we arrived, the used soap left behind by a previous resident adorned the shelf, and it was never removed. 4) The mattress was horribly uncomfortable. It had to be well over 10 years old and I believe it is broken in some places. I don't even know how that happens. 5) Everything is very dated. The common areas with carpet look like they have never been cleaned. And I'm fairly certain it's the original 1800s era carpet. It's pretty clear they aren't investing any money into the place. The ugly: Earlier I mentioned the mattress was uncomfortable. My friend and I decided to bet on how old it was. I was thinking roughly 15 years, he thought at least 20. We stripped the sheets off the bed to check the mattress tag, and in the process, I lost a measure of faith in humanity that I can never get back. The mattress cover (this is the removable, washable layer that is under the sheets) had clearly not been washed, bleached, (properly incinerated) in years. Interesting place, can walk everywhere. stayed 5 nights each night in a different room. "Budget room" was pretty good. Balcony rooms cool too but if you have loud neighbors you hear everything they do. Each room had good and bad parts but you're more there for the ambiance and location and free parking. I'd stay again. Off the main drag but close enough. Nice french bakery right across the street. Bug repellent a must for balcony rooms cause you want to leave the doors open but the blood sucking evil scum will stab you day and night. read more
