Good coffee, but could be great. They used to serve siphon coffee, which was superior, but they no longer do. I fell in love with siphon coffee at Blue Bottle Coffee in San Francisco and I was psyched when I discovered Houndstooth served it! I've heard good things about Houndstooth and finally made it in last Sunday morning. There was a long line which seemed promising. I checked out the menu and spotted a machiatto. I know what a machiatto is and how it's made. It's espresso with a little bit of foamy milk. I realize that asking for ice is...perhaps asking too much but I'm willing to pay for the inconvenience to the barista. Sarcasm? Yes. I ordered the machiatto and for some crazy reason, I wanted it on ice. Oh, I DID NOT ask for a venti/grande iced caramel machiatto. I asked for a machiatto over ice and I was promptly told by the barista that Houndstooth Coffee is a very very coffee centric shop and I should go to Starbucks for what I was asking. THE BARISTA LITERALLY TOLD ME TO GO TO STARBUCKS FOR ICE IN MY COFFEE. I'm telling everyone that I got Portandia'd at Houndstooth over ice in my coffee. Oh yeah. Been to Houndstooth a couple of times. The last time, I came with a friend. We ordered two regular coffees and a vegan donut. My friend paid. The total was $12. I mentioned to my friend that this seemed a little steep for what we ordered, so he asked the barista if this was correct. Rather than break down the pricing, the barista responded with a short speech to the effect that they like to think of coffee as an experience like wine, where price wasn't really the important thing. blah blah blah. . . we were questioniing your ability to push a button, not your philosophy, dude. The fedora-and-tie pseudo-uniform that the staff wear bugs me too. Seems like the ultimate in valuing style over practicality. They have good coffee, but there are lots of places near here to get good coffee that aren't nearly as precious about it, so I'm probably never coming back here. read more

These guys really pay attention to what they offer and want their customers to appreciate a good drink. If you want a non-fat iced pumpkin latte you're in the wrong place. The Rosedale neighborhood --and Austin in general-- needs a coffeeshop like Houndstooth. Here are my thoughts from initial visits: the baristas were making themselves drinks; only slightly awkward due to the open nature of the bar in the small, intimate space of the shop. A flat screen floated in the corner above the bar. What is this trend of TVs in coffeshops? (See: Teo on 38th) There are no closed captions so all the TV contributes to the space is busy images; impossible to glean information or follow the plot of the soap. The owner needs to hire an artist-scribe for their menu -- the juvenile handwriting doesn't match the otherwise sophisticated vibe. Detailing is otherwise impressive -- good dishes and beautiful machines. Rich hardwood benches reminiscent of Stumptown's frame the space nicely and are the only source of warmth ("positive space"). Espresso is clearly the forte here; a chai I ordered was first made with the wrong milk, then, upon second delivery, was lukewarm and covered in unseemly bubbles. Not the velvety foam I'd expected. The pastries were deliciously buttery, though the shop needs more savory options for the afternoon-dwellers averse to adjacent Tacodeli. The bathroom door needs signage and the walls/floor more outlets; I saw but two electronic sources. Surprising for a shop so suited to laptop-toting, creative-type productivity machines like myself. Conversation echoes throughout, a problem endemic to the trendy minimal-utilitarian aesthetic of such shops. A hall floor mat leading to the cashier would both facilitate flow ("Do I order here?") and dampen noise. Art on the walls would give the space more of a soiree feel -- as is, it's hard for me to see myself enjoying a beer here as the space is rather austere. The music was too loud and raucous on my first visit; the second time David Gray and James Taylor more appropriately filled the airwaves, and at a decibel level more conducive to reading. This shop has a lot of potential and will surely be quite popular with the Hyde Park crowd. However, I'm not sure current seating will accommodate the populace; tall stools at the back of the bar would help, though could make the intimate space over-cramped like Bennu (=crawling over tables and chairs). In sum, Houndstooth reflects the best parts of Medici and Thunderbird, the crucibles where the owner was forged. I am optimistic for the shop's future and hope it does create a "pattern" of customers I see again and again. read more

You want good coffee and snacks? Here you go. Comfortable room with modern but not inaccessible style. Friendly, helpful staff. The coffee itself is the real deal. It's brewed properly, too - not just from a big canister of stuff that's been sitting around for a while. I stuck with the house blend most days, and it didn't disappoint. Pleasant, medium roast. Smooth. Tasty. I'm unsure where they source their chocolate chip scones, but let me say that they were the best scones I've had outside of Lazy Jane's Cafe up in Madison, Wisconsin. That's an impressive feat. Oh, and the wifi is free and fast. All told, this was the only coffee I cared about in Austin. Super good. I'll go back the next time I'm in town. read more

This place can seat a whopping 15 people inside tops. The coffee is pretty good so I guess it could be a good place to get a drink to go but I wouldn't come here expecting a nice study spot. Chances are there won't any tables available and even if there are, the wifi is pretty slow (my SQL server kept disconnecting). The coffee is smooth, but the art inside the cup, well, how do you describe it....the pattern today looked like a gorgeous apple (in the foam - I'm sure you coffee experts know what I mean). I went in, looking for a place to loiter for a bit, and was easily convinced to order the summer time special: coffee julep. Its (I think) a shot of espresso, sparkling water, simple syrup, and mint poured over ice. I don't think I'd order it again because it was kind of expensive for such a small amount of liquid, but it was much better than I anticipated. Its in a great location, has a lot of seating, and they even have some pastries in case you're hungry. Definitely a fan, and will probably go back. read more

Perhaps if you have also bought into wearing overalls, fedoras, handlebar mustaches, and all the other things that make up the Austin Hipster, you'll love to coo and bathe in your own smugness while over paying for such inexpensive coffee. Not only is the coffee bad, the chairs are horribly uncomfortable, there is literally, and i do mean literally, only one outlet plug in the entire store. So if you would like to enjoy yourself and perhaps use a laptop like a civilized human being, don't expect to do it here. If you'd like to smoke cloves, roll your own ciggs, and talk about how cool you are, houndstooth is the place to do it! A lot of my friends LOVE this place, and I must admit that their french press coffee is very good. But I can make french press coffee at home...without being sighed at. It also feels very cold in here, and I'm not talking about the A/C. I know they're going for a mod look, but the problem with mod is that if you overdo it your space looks uninviting. I went to Houndstooth for the 1st - and last - time yesterday. This coffee shop is the epitome of American GREED when they charge $6.27 for a 16 oz. iced mocha! And to add insult to injury, it didn't even taste good. It tasted like an iced coffee, not an iced mocha. I seriously don't know how the owners there can sleep at night knowing how much they're gouging each and every one of their patrons. Super uncomfortable chairs, barely any outlets to plug your computer in, and expensive drinks. An iced tea is 2.50, which, would be acceptable if there were free refills--or even if the refill was a reasonable 50 cents--but there aren't. A refill is a dollar. The only perk is that it's next to tacodeli that has delicious (and cheap) agua fresca. read more

This place is great, consistent coffee. The coffee shop itself isn't too big and can get really busy at some points. They take heir coffee seriously--so seriously that it is one of the more expensive shops around but I think for the quality, it's worth it. The service is always fast and it is always consistent. Amazing. Great atmosphere, great coffee. The guy who helped us took the time to chat us up about the different coffee offerings. One VERY unique thing about this cafe is that they do not use a traditional drip coffee machine, they brew all coffee by hand either via french press or syphon method. The pastries are from Bakerman's which I like, although I would recommend them picking up Rockstar bagels. We can't wait to go back and try some espresso! read more

Houndstooth has made me rethink what I look for in a great coffee place. So many coffee shops in town feature "fancy" espresso drinks with their flavored syrups, organic sweeteners, nutmeg , cinnamon and foaming milk. It's easy to lose sight that at the core of any great espresso drink the most important factor is the espresso beans: their quality, taste and flavor. Houndstooth offers a seasonal variety of espresso beans with different flavor profiles; you select your beans and then your drink. This place is ok. The espresso is fairly good, though you will have to wade through a sea of upscale hipsters to get your drink. I wouldn't go out of my way to get a drink here, but its worth trying if your close. They seem a little too uppity, and a little into being trendy. They really didn't wow me with a really fabulous crema, or great pull... espresso is one drink to obsess about and be particular, though they totally look the part they miss the boat. I love Houndstooth and would give it a higher rating were it not for the milk they use for cappuccinos and lattes. The coffee beans are very good and it's a shame the owner doesn't place any emphasis on the milk. Seriously, I don't understand why they use Bordens- a factory-dairy hormone imbued milk, instead of one from a grass-fed roaming home-farm cow as it really does taste better. Oh we'll, I guess I'm accustomed to the quality coffee shops on the east coast that use organic milk for their lattes and cappuccinos. It's great Houndstooth will be opening a downtown location next month, but I'll stick to Caffe Medici as they have the good sense to offer Promise Land milk if Bordens is not your thing. read more
