Both conversations consisted of complaining about the weather because that's all we like to talk about in Chicago this time of year. Our waiter also brought his A game. Food: Fantastic - one of the tastiest meals I've had in the area. My dining companions were nice enough to share their kale and burrata salads with me. I'd have a difficult time choosing between them next time! The tuna tartare app was also quite good. For my entree I went with the salmon and ate every last bite. My wife and I had an awesome 35th bday dinner for myself here a couple weeks ago!!! Hats off to Jen Eisen and her staff!!! The service was very attentive and the food was OUTSTANDING!!!! We enjoyed the shrimp and lobster fritters for starters, followed by the Brussels sprout salad. I went with the special steak that was a 16 oz sliced ribeye steak over polenta and mushrooms. The sauce was to die for and my medium rare steak was cooked to perfection. My wife had the halibut and thoroughly enjoyed her dish as well. House 406 is a great addition to an otherwise absent fine dining scene in downtown Northbrook. Oh, and it's not an Italian restaurant either, since we have Francesca's, Marcellos and Oliveris as really the only other "finer" dining experiences in town.....all Italian cuisine. Hubby and I went to an elite event here. We had a great time and the food and drinks were very good (see other review on the event). We made an opentable res for 6pm. We arrived a little early and asked if we could eat at the bar. No problem-o! It's a cozy dark restaurant. Perfect for a cold winter night. Josh and Tim were great bartenders. They explained a lot about the drinks and took time and care making them. The drinks are complex, and when it gets busier, they don't have much time to talk. Hubby got their manhattan, and I got two other drinks. See pics. We shared a lamb short rib pasta app. Both of us thought it was great. The spices on the lamb had just enough zing to make it interesting. Hubby isn't a lamb eater... but he raved. For entrees I had the lamb chops and hubby had a special horseradish encrusted ribeye. I took off half a star because his meal came out with out the crust. Not sure why, and no one noticed until we said, isn't this supposed to have horseradish crust? They took it back. I ate mine while he waited. Seems like an obvious miss for a small, not too busy place, that talks about the attention they pay to farm to table etc. But "YAY! I'm a fan" means just that. My lamb was very tasty and so was his steak. I had some leftovers the next day, and it was just as good. Mine came with a tomato couscous. I took off the other half star for our dessert. We had churro bread pudding with a spicy ice cream. Now all of these things are in my wheel-house. I would order each one individually... but all together? Sounds like a dream come true! Not so much. I guess I like the crispy crust of the churro, but it gets lost and mushy in a bread pudding. The spicy ice cream was good, but I would have liked it better as a simple scoop with a nice crisp butter cookie on the side. You guys might like the dessert, but I'll try a different one next time. We dropped in late on a Friday evening. Pricey I'd say. Good I'd say. Details on the good? I ordered a Tagliatelle which featured a puree of fresh, local(?) greenery. Quite good, not overwhelming, spare and tasty. My partner ordered a pork ribeye--medium. (The ribeye was good if somewhat dry). Based upon the glass of white wine I ordered, a Pinot Grigio, and looking at the list, a good selection of wines I'd say. Mini (not major) sticker shock when the bill was delivered. read more

This terrific restaurant is tucked away in a shopping mall in Northbrook that belies how good the food here is. My wife and I had a fantastic meal and experience here. We sat inside, and the interior has a dark, romantic atmosphere with a nice bar and comfortable chair/booth seating. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. We started with the superb Lobster Crostini. The lobster was very fresh and plump, while the sauce had a nice spicy kick. We could have eaten two orders, it was so good. My wife ordered the NY Strip Flatbread, tender steak on a very thin crust with arugula and a delicious cream sauce drizzled on it. Delicious and also a good portion, not oversized. All the flavors really came together. I had a filet special with a mushroom crust on it. Normally I don't like to tart up a steak, but the crust was a great complement to a tender and perfectly cooked filet. Very good and just what I want from a filet. The house old fashioned was also excellent and a reasonable $12 considering the quality. Lots of great wine selections and whisky flights as well. The only negative was that our desserts were good, not great (creme brulee and peach cobbler). We wish we had skipped and doubled on the lobster crostini. The best way I can justify 5 stars is that we both agreed we would be very happy to come back the next day and have the same meal again. A group of friends who tend to know their stuff oohed and aahed over House 406 and how fabulous, funky, and hot it is, so my wife and I made a reservation for the next night. It's fine, but it's not fabulous, funky, or hot (in terms of vibe or temperature ... see below). Overall: Service was quite good. Room is interesting and a creative use of a storefront in a strip center. Food was fine ... but for "fine" was about 50% too expensive given the nature of the prep and presentation. I guess it's a step up for Northbrook, but nothing to rush into the way we did based on friends' exhortations. More specifically: As you'll read in other reviews, the room is a creatively converted storefront. They use curtains to divide the space and block the cold. It doesn't work. We were seated in the front window near the door and froze. Chicago winters, I guess. We had no issues getting seated on time. Went right to our table at a prime time on a Friday night. Server was prompt and attentive and friendly and at times even playful (in a good way) without being intrusive. The food was good, but not "all that" as everyone seemed suggest. We started with the kale salad and caesar salad, both of which were ok, but had no interesting presentation which I'd have expected given reviews and pricing. My kale was overdressed. They were also pretty big for appetizer salads...but that's not a deal breaker. Wife's horseradish crusted whitefish and my short rib gnocchi (the latter recommended to me by my friends) were similarly perfectly edible, but not breathtaking or life changing. The obligatory brussels sprouts with pancetta side was undercooked (but I like them that way). Portions were more than adequate (we both brought some home), and presentation uninspired but fine. The chocolate lava cake with peanut butter ice cream dessert rocked, though. Please don't misunderstand -- there's nothing wrong with the restaurant and we had a perfectly delightful meal ... but there wasn't anything that would cause me to hurry back or tell my friends to rush in. NB: for those who suggest it's like being in the West Loop in the late 1990s or early 2000s...it's not. It's more like a middle age suburban revisionist memory of what that was like. Overall: Great food, great people, and great surrounding. - - - My family went there last night to check it out. When we got there the outside seating was full and lively with chatter and laughter. When inside we saw that it was a great interior and such a hidden gem. We were seated in the back and as soon I sat it felt like I was sinking into my seat (10/10 for the chairs!). So-So Well I am a little disappointed in House 406. I was expecting so much more but let down. My husband and I live nearby. We are one of those people who like to wait for a new place to work out their kinks so we give it sometime. This was our first time and might be our last.... We ordered the short ribs which were very good. However my husband ordered the NY Strip and it had NO flavor. The side dishes we OK and I mean just OK! Truffle fries which I love - these barely had truffle flavor. And cream spinach with fresh spinach - has an odd texture :( The place itself is trendy and cool. Great location right in downtown Northbrook. The service is excellent! From the hostess to the waiter... But for a nice dinner out I would expect better flavor in food. It should spot on! This is something they can fix - if they are reading the Yelp reviews. I also noticed I'm not the only one not impressed with food. Hope they get their act together. Organized a team dinner at House 406 recently for a group of 9 people. It was a very chilly Tuesday night and arrived to the restaurant. They had some curtains around the door to keep the air from coming into the restaurant and so I didn't get a good look into the space until I walked in. What a really cozy and cute restaurant. Would be a great restaurant for a date night if I lived in the area! We were seated at the back of the room. Our server was Eugenio and he promptly came over to get our drink orders. He was incredibly attentive the entire evening and made sure we were well taken care of. I ordered a House Old Fashioned which was on their specialty cocktail menu and it was good, but was really on the lighter side. I'm used to bourbon kicking my teeth in and making off with the gold in my molars and this drink was definitely more mellow. Not to say that it wasn't delicious but it felt a little watered down to me (it was made with Old Forester which I have at home). I had the caprese burrata salad which was AMAZING. For the entree I struggled since almost all the items sounded amazing, and ultimately settled on the seared scallops which was served with butternut squash risotto. I wasn't sure how the risotto would taste but I'm glad I went with it. Very delicious and did have some chunks of squash in it. I unfortunately could not finish my meal since I had eaten the salad (but hell yes I ate the scallops). Other colleagues had the whitefish, pork chops and crab cakes. everyone was super happy with their meal and were also a big fan of the restaurant. So the one thing that I have to nitpick about, was the restaurant was like the inside of an oven. I generally am ALWAYS cold and for me to take off a sweater and still be sweltering means I've reached the 6th ring of hell. I can appreciate them wanting to keep it warm to offset the bitter cold outside, but it was extreme. Other than that, food was great, service was great, restaurant was great. We had a bone-in steak that was cooked perfectly, a mezze maniche (basically an elote tasting pasta), the crispiest onion rings and really good cocktails. You have to try the raspberry margarita! Had dinner there tonight, 9/10. Despite COVID and bad weather, our party of 4 sat under the tent in front of the restaurant. With a heat lamp near by, it was actually comfortable, despite the temperature around 60. The server was masked and a bottle of hand sanitizer was placed on the table. The server was attentive. We started with 2 appetizers. The fritter was outstanding. We also had the lobster cristini. This was a special. It was more like an amuse bush. While I don't remember the price ($28), it was drastically over priced. Way to much! The entrees we had included a burger and clams with pasta. Two of us had the special. Pan seared scallops over mushroom risotto. Upon ordering the waiter described them as "fried." This was inaccurate and later clarified. The risotto was good, needed salt and had very few mushrooms. The biggest problem was the dish had only 3 relatively small scallops. Had these been sea scallops, it would have been better. Based on the price and size of scallops, there should have been 5 of them, not just 3. Good craft beer selection. The place is over-priced. read more

My visits here never disappoint. A perfect evening I had dining al fresco with my girlfriend playing catch up on their outside patio. And bonus we were the only two people outside with a heater all to ourselves. This place is one of my absolute favorites for many reasons. First off the food is delicious. Secondly Jennifer Eisen a local Northbrook Native is so hospitable. As I've come to know her over frequent visits House 406 is named after the address of their family vacation home. For Tonight's dinner I ordered the Caesar Salad which was perfectly dressed. For my entree I ordered the sea scallops with Risotto and peas. After committing to the Whole 30 diet since January and being Italian I was more than ready to jump on board with the Risotto. One of my favorites. (Twist my arm). Although not a perfect pairing with my seafood dish I was craving a red wine and went with the Hahn Pinot Noir. Which was perfect (not too heavy) given tonight's cooler temps, but really I'm just a red wine girl. My girlfriend had the Salmon which was excellent. And we shared the Onion Rings...OMG I'm in love. Crispy, crunchy and had grated Parmesan cheese. I mean really. I hope others take the opportunity to try this place out. Places like these in Northbrook are few and far between! read more

Went here with another couple and thought the food was excellent! They have a good size gluten free menu with plenty of options. We had the chopped and Brussel sprouts salad to start and then I had the Chilean sea-bass which was cooked to perfection. Delicious! I had the asparagus on the side which was not necessary because the portions are good size but they were delicious. It was nice to see a high end local restaurant in the suburbs instead of another chain. Overall it was very good and we will return again. I will start this review by saying that the food and service were impeccable. I was quite surprised by such an eclectic restaurant in the Northbrook area, but a very much welcomed surprise. Now let's dive into the strangeness of the evening. First of all, this is placed in the middle of a suburban strip mall. The décor included rustic modern wall hangings, target outdoor patio furniture and a large painting of a sexy cowgirl. My brain still doesn't quite understand. We arrived a little before 6pm which I guessed would be fine in regards to reservations, but they were actually booked until 9 (as deserved). We were able to sit in the lounge area which was perfectly fine, although a bit cramped. We started with the kale and shallot vegetable side, which was light and delicious. We followed with the spicy corn soup with jicama, my personal favorite of the evening. We followed this was the burrata plate with fresh tomatoes and peaches in a balsamic vinaigrette. We ended our evening with the blue cheese burger and truffle fries. All of the food was delicious and similar to downtown Chicago opposed to chain restaurants of the north suburbs. My partner had Prosecco and I had a delicious spiced pear cocktail. Our waiter was as attentive as he could be with the growing crowd, which had actually completely filled the place by 7pm. The star of the evening, which should have been the food, was actually the group of cougar wannabe ladies seated next to us. I once saw an episode of the Real Housewives of somewhere completely overpriced and thought to myself, this is clearly a staged form of reality. Last night, I came to the painful conclusion that this does, in fact, exist and is in the suburbs of Chicago. At one point, an actual conversation I heard went like this.. "I hired this woman to paint my initials on my purse in pink. Isn't it just fab?" Just a few minutes later it was discussed why t-shirts were inappropriate to wear at any point but added expensive waist length pearls to the outfit could recover any fashion mistake. All 3 other woman concurred. By the time my partner and I got to our burger, I had almost completely lost my appetite. The bright red-haired woman to my right wielding a "very expensive bracelet" (in her words) that looked like a cross between something from the clearance rack at Claire's and a gemstoned weapon smelled as if she had bathed in lilacs, old lady perfume and the rotting of my soul. As the front door opened, I rejoiced with the opportunity for fresh air but the draft actually made her stench so strong that I contemplated either pouring my water on her or diving out of the window directly in front of me. As soon as our food was finished, which was in seconds, my partner and I cleared out just as the table had next to us. Props to this establishment for taking the money of these overly rich, spoiled women. Also, apologies if I offended anyone but I seriously cannot get over the vapid nature of these woman and the constant bragging of their wealth. I am still sneezing out old lady perfume the next morning. Overall, the restaurant is fantastic! But get ready for the clientele that is most definitely not expected compared to downtown dining. read more

I've been wanting to try House 406 for some time - hoping that an upscale option in downtown Northbrook would actually deliver a dining experience on par with our favorites in Chicago. Unfortunately, I could not have been more disappointed. The ambitious menu had promise, but all of the dishes our party of six ordered fell short on presentation and flavor. To make matters worse, the service was absolutely atrocious. We were left waiting for nearly an hour in between appetizer and main course. We were then left to sit with dirty dishes and empty drink glasses for 10 minutes - no one on staff as much as checked in on us until we called over Owner Jennifer Eizen - who could not have been ruder and seemed not to care about our experience in her restaurant. My husband needs to have low fat diet, they have been really patient and very accommodating, always produces delicious and healthy food. Trying hard to be something it's not. Food was okay. It's hard to believe this is a farm to table restaurant because the amount of salt and sauce used was WAY too much and overpowered the meals we ordered. I wanted to taste the 'farm' in my meal and didn't. An hour after our dinner and two full glasses of water gone, we were left very unsatisfied. Shrimp/lobster poppers were good but once again, overloaded with unnecessary sauce. The quinoa cake was delicious, however it came with pasta sauce which didn't fit the dish. Not a great combo. My husbands gnocchi and braised ribs were pure salt! First few bites were intense with flavor however by the end, it was unpleasant to eat. Also all dishes from the appetizers to the $6 pressed coffee were WAY WAY overpriced. You're not a Michelin Restaurant... Meh. It was okay. First we were told that we couldn't get a reservation for 5:30, only for 5 because they were "booked." Fine. But when we were sitting there at 6:45 and barely half the restaurant was occupied, we were a bit skeptical. The appetizer was good - the eggplant on pretzel and the drinks were okay too. However, the entree - the filet was DOUSED in what we though was A-1 sauce. What was the chef trying to hide??? The fries were okay...not crispy at all with some flakes of parmesan to add...flavor? Decoration? Who knows. The server was on top of it. In every way. She wouldn't STOP asking us when we were ready to order and made sure to get us the check as SOON as we ordered dessert. Rushed, much? Speaking of dessert...apparently the chocolate dessert with peanut butter and a puppy chow crust is amazing. But, can you tell me more about it? Not really. It's just a mess of these ingredients that leads to a pretty low quality dessert. Meh. Not impressed. Would I go back? Probably not. Nice, trendy place but with one huge flaw: NO ONE WANTS TO WAIT OVER AN HOUR FOR THEIR MAIN COURSE. My wife ordered soup. More than half an hour (approaching 40 minutes now) we still don't have our meals. They have pretzel rolls they were handing out to other tables, we had to ask for ours to avoid starving while waiting. This waiting game is a recent but huge problem with restaurants lately. This place needs to figure out how to get food made within a reasonable time. So now they brought our meal to a different table, and after a few minutes there, brought it back to the kitchen. And the waiter reeked of smoke when he first greeted us. That's it, we are paying for the soup and leaving. As we are walking out, the food finally arrived. Incredible, unique food and unmatched service. We absolutely loved their carrots, which was the unexpected star of the night-- spicy and sweet and delicious. OK, I'm giving House 406 4 stars only because I did not try a dessert. I'll update the rating once I return and try one of the sweet treats! House 406 is a wonderful addition to the suburbs! It reminds me of a restaurant I would go to in the city. It has wonderful ambiance and is perfect for a date night or a girls' night! The food is delicious! The sweet potato gnocchi w/ braised short rib is one of my absolute favorites!!! So yummy! The mahi-mahi w/ sweet peas and other deliciousness is AMAZING as well. I can still taste both items! :) They also have a variety of unique cocktails! Something to definitely please all palettes! I had the pleasure of meeting Jen Eisen (owner) and the executive chef. They both are very warm and passionate about their concept. I love that they make farm to table a priority and only use the best of ingredients! I highly recommend you trying House 406! Had the special, its was lobster and filet for $39 -- sounds like a deal right? Lobster tail was basically like eating my shoe. Filet was so small (4 oz) it barely could be called a filet instead of being a beef tip. My filet was way, way over cooked too. Appetizer - lobster and shrimp poppers -- something like that. That wasn't any good either. I should have know when you walk into a coat closet as you enter the place its not going to be that good. Over priced, poor layout, service was less than decent... We found the menu to be somewhat limited and not a good value for what was delivered. A $58 strip steak was tough and thinly sliced. The filet and lobster was a huge disappointment. It was a two-bite piece of overcooked lobster, not 4 ounces of meat. It felt like it missed the mark with almost every dish and in every area. What a fun place to have in Northbrook. This place is a gem within a strip mall. I got a chance to meet the owner, who seems committed to making this not only a great environment for those who eat here but also a great environment for the people who work here. I'm OK with spending a little extra here and there when I know a business is particular of where they get their food. The mushroom soup was lovely. The tuna appetizer was light and delicious. What really blew my socks off were the cocktails. I tried something that tasted like a spiked hot chocolate. Delicious! What a great ambiance here! It was like being in the city in the comforts of Northbrook. A great romantic feel to the space, or even a fun girls night dinner. The food is absolutely delicious! I was able to try a few of the dishes, my favorite was the lamb chop. And I don't even like lamb! It was cooked to perfection- amazing. Also another stand out was the duck egg roll- and I also don't like duck! It had a great sauce. Not a fan of the sweet potato dish but I know its typically a big hit. DESSERT! I love this place. Food is good, sometimes great, though some argue a bit overpriced. Environment is surprisingly sophisticated for a Northbrook minimal location. Whiskey list is the most extensive in the area and beats most downtown lists - and significantly cheaper too. I like seeing the owner and her family working together on this nice business. Reserved based on restaurant's claim of being organic, modern American. Did not see any organic choices and our server struggled to point to any either. The atmosphere is not modern, rather typical traditional. After the server advertised that one of their cocktails uses Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal in its preparation, I questioned the reasoning for utilization of an inferior ingredient for a supposedly organically oriented establishment. I have never posted a review before, but after the disappointment of my family and I, I felt as though I had to. My family and I had never been to this place before, but picked it for Mother's Day specifically because we all live in Northbrook and it was a great sounding place that also was serving mimosas for brunch (which was our mother's only request). When we arrived, we were seated immediately. My sister made the reservations and informed us that it was a brunch buffet. The interior was very nice and the seating was comfortable. After that, the desserts and 2 available salads were good, but otherwise, I was only disappointed. Before I explain, it is important to note that this is what was posted ahead of time online about the meal for Mother's Day brunch: "Message about reservations on this day Sunday, May 13, 2018 we will be hosting a Brunch Buffet with Mimosa Specials sure to please every member of your family! Dinner? We will be serving our normal dinner menu along with some fantastic specials! Brunch Buffet from 10:30am - 2pm. Our traditional menu will be served for dinner 5pm-9pm." Overall, it was very expensive and definitely not nearly worth the amount we paid per person. We had 6 people and our bill was over $300 for a small buffet and only one small Bloody Mary ordered. This was also with gratuity already included. It was a bit upsetting about the gratuity included since we were only really approached to give us coffee, water, and to take our plates away, so there wasn't much of what any of us would call "service" otherwise, especially since it was a buffet. Additionally, alcohol was not included in the buffet at all, which was not expected based on what was written online. Based on a conversation my mother had prior to my arrival with a waiter/waitress, she was under the impression there weren't any mimosas at all, so she ordered a Bloody Mary. Unfortunately, I am not sure what the content of that conversation was, so I do not know all the facts regarding the mimosas. Regardless, we were a bit upset about this, since the only thing my mom wanted for her brunch was a mimosa or two. The most upsetting part was that the food was average at best and very small for a buffet (bagels, lox, a fruit/veggie spread, two small salads, small desserts, some french toast "casserole" where the pieces were all stuck together to the point where attempting to grab one would make it all crumble into mush, short rib, some potatoes, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, basic sausage and bacon, decent veggie frittata, and a few other basic food items I cannot currently remember). The food options in this buffet would never make us think that this would end up being $50 a person! There wasn't one thing fancy or expensive about this buffet. Most importantly, nowhere did it mention that the meal would be about $50 per person! It didn't say it on any sign or come out of any staff member's lips while we were in the restaurant. It also did not say the price online either. We collectively feel a bit cheated and misled and will not be recommending this place to anyone in the future. read more

I don't know why it took me this long to visit this restaurant (it's in the neighborhood) but so glad we finally did! The food was amazing (scallops and risotto) drinks were great, service was fabulous and the hubby was so excited to bring back a bottle of whiskey! read more
