Truly a hidden gem. Don't be dissuaded by the strip mall location. Once you're inside, you'll think you're in the city. I'm not usually a fan of old fashioneds, but I absolutely loved the banana bread old fashioned to start. Arugula salad with parmesan and polenta croutons was simple but delicious, with an excellent balsamic vinaigrette. Filet was perfectly done to medium rare plus, with a richly flavored demiglaze, mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. Lobster was buttery and so tender. My other half enjoyed his horseradish crusted whitefish. Amazing Brussels and fries too. We dined with another couple and shared three desserts. The winner was the cinnamon roll bread pudding. It's one of the best desserts I've ever had anywhere. Service was spectacular. Our waiter was entertaining and helpful, always there when we needed something. We will be back. read more

Met a colleague here for dinner while I was in town. Although this place is in a strip mall, give it a chance. It feels small but that's what makes it great. The staff was so helpful. Everyone wanted to get drinks, bring bread, take your order. Our waiter was fabulous. He helped me make my decision on the halibut. It was SO GOOD! Normally I wouldn't go to the Midwest to get fish since I live in San Diego but I have to say this dish was done perfectly. My salad was a large portion. The fish was flakey and the Brussel sprouts terrific. This place is a hidden gem. read more

Great food but service could be better. We came for lunch with a group of 8ish and although the restaurant space is lovely it was empty inside with a few two tops outside. Our meal took forever and unfortunately we had to eat fast to make it back to work on time for meetings. That was not too fun and didn't allow us to fully enjoy the quality and taste of the food which was great but rushed. I had the short rib brisket burger which was large and came on pretzel roll with avocado and bacon slices as well as provolone cheese. It came with an arugula salad side and that was tasty and a perfect sized portion. I also had a few of the parmesan truffle fries and they were delish and thick steak style fries not the usual skinny minis. Again just wish we didn't sit at the table for so long waiting and instead had more time for eating. Especially when it was slow! read more

This gem is a diamond tucked away in a little strip mall in Northbrook. Not big, but perfect for a date, romantic evening or just a great meal with the right setting for conversation. Food was excellent. Service was superb. Menu choices and wine list abundant for my tastes and everything was more than fairly priced for all we enjoyed. I'd love to keep this to myself as my new favorite restaurant, but it is owner operated and these are good people, thus deserves to be shouted from the mountain tops. Highly recommended. read more

This place is a great find in the suburbs. They try to bring the feel of the downtown city out to Northbrook and do a good job of it. Food was pretty on point. I started with the shaved brussel sprout salad. The apples and lemon dressing combo were very tasty. Main course was a 10 Oz bone in Filet. I ordered it medium and it was a touch over cooked. I blame myself for screwing up a perfectly good steak by ordering medium...not sure what I was thinking. One of the most impressive things about this place was the bourbon selection! It was pretty extensive for such a small out of the way location. The folks there really seemed to know the ins and outs of drinking it. It wasn't just a ploy to get you to drink an $18 glass of whiskey, they were very interested in the taste of it all. I'd recommend it if you're in the area! read more

We recently went back for an early dinner; sat outside on a rare nice evening, interrupted only by the sounds of cars and a screaming child a few tables away. We had a series of three courses, two apps, two salads and two entrees. The apps were tasty if a little pricey; the salads were less convincing; the entrees, a pasta with Kale and a fish with a fruit salsa missed the mark; the pasta was just not tasty and the fish was surprisingly drab. Our favorite entree from the prior menu was gone as were the desserts we liked, part of their ever changing menu plan. Good bread, but that doesn't make uo for the deficiencies . Northbrook could use more upscale restaurants but I'm not siure this is one of them. read more

I loved it!! It felt like downtown Chicago, very city chic which is great for a small town without many restaurants that are not chains. It is true it was somewhat pricey but I think it's important to take into consideration that most places near here for a good meal are pricey and it was so worth it. I went for lunch around 1 a half an hour before closing so there were only 2 other people. The service was AMAZING so nice and the location was great! A great place to go for a lunch break from studying in the library all day! I was eating by myself reading and I thought the staff would be a little judgemental but they were so nice and didn't seem judgey at all! I got the Steak NY strip sandwich and it was the best meal I've had in a very long time. Come hungry because at the time it doesn't look like a lot of food but I was stuffed after The parmesan fries are the best also! read more

Excellent. Duck sliders had the perfect amount of truffle aoli. Short ribs fell off the bone. My Parmesan crusted whitefish was cooked perfectly. the cauliflower served with my entree was a favorite. We went in August so I was surprised how heavy the menu items were. It felt like a fall menu. I would have loved to have seen lighter items this time around and would have loved to come back in the fall to see what was new. The service was FAST. The space is small so tables are really close together. Only negative is that the space is extremely loud. read more

The food was great. Oysters we're as fresh if I was sitting at a side cafe in Boston and flavor was better then any I have ever had. Salad also perfect. Entrées were also prepared perfect. Finished with one of there homemade desserts made with puppy chow which was great and if that wasn't enough the Owner and Chef sent over a Tiramisu they make in a large glass bowl which was amazing. We started with the lobster and shrimp sliders and everyone enjoyed them. The strip steak was excellent however the vegetables that accompanied it were inedible. At first, I thought it was me but I noticed my friend did not eat any of his vegetables either. My wife enjoyed the airline chicken. Except for the vegetables that accompanied the strip steak, all of the food was excellent and beautifully presented. The biggest problem in this restaurant is noise. It is so noisy you cannot hear your table mate without their having to yell. I think some of the service problems mentioned by other reviewers is a result of the waitstaff not being able to hear the diner's request. I do not appreciate being constantly bumped and jostled during my meal and considered leaving before ordering due to the closeness of the tables. Once served, it became apparent that the tables are too small for a party of four. Too many plates and nowhere to put them. At these prices, I do not feel that I need to move my chair every time a waiter or busboy needs to service the table behind me. Party of four, 1 drink each, 1 appetizer, 4 entrees and 1 dessert = $300 including gratuity. I am sure I will be back but I will bring earplugs and learn sign language so we can have a conversation during our meal. read more

Ok place to dine as there are not many other options as for "neighborhood joints." But nothing to brag or trip out for. Food - Just ok food with main stream joint (mortons, wild fire, etc.) price. Rather default to those than here. Decor - I don't get those who liked the decor. It is a tiny place with lots of tables crammed. It looked it tried but missing that 2% to be called nice. They have to choose what this place is aspired to be or compete. House 406 used to be one of our favorite local restaurants in Northbrook. We have had many great meals here, and this used to be our "go to" Northbrook fine dining place. However, our most recent experience will likely take this place off our list for good. Many of the dishes were incredibly oily, and we actually had to send back the French onion soup and the Brussel sprouts due to their being so drenched in oil that they were entirely inedible. For our main courses we had the filet duo and the lamb chops. Both were ordered medium and the lamb was definitely medium well and the steak was cooled properly but nothing special and similar to something one could get at Wildfire. The cous cous that came with the lamb were so over cooked and oily that no other flavors were discernable over the grease. The main upside to our evening was the bar service which is always excellent as they have some nice wine and cocktail options. The service was okay, and although our waiter removed the returned items from our bill, we were surprised that he didn't send a manager to our table especially after we sent back a few dishes. As we departed no one inquired about our meal, and the hostess seemed apathetic. Overall a disappointment for a 200 dollar meal for two. read more

Was not impressed with the food here. My gf got the risotto and scallops which wasn't bad but pretty soupy and not really how risotto should be. I got the beef ribeye and it was probably the worse I've ever had. Very tough and virtually no fat/marbling that u would expect to have in a ribeye. Literally I can get a ribeye from jewel that tastes better than this did...and wow it came with fries! $59 for fries and rump roast :(. Service was good. Possibly the other menu items are good but I certainly don't recommend the ribeye! read more

I hate writing a poor review as I know restaurants have really taken it on the chin due to Covid. However, I just cannot let this one go. Came here on Mother's Day for their "brunch." It was horrible. First, we noticed that the menu was really lunch, with one egg dish (vegetable frittata) and one kids' breakfast (pancakes). That's hardy brunch. We politely asked if we could have the kitchen make us scrambled eggs and bacon or something other than what they had. NOPE. Just what's on the menu. So...we settled on the frittata and my daughter had the salmon salad. So....when the food came out, my daughter cut into her salmon and it was raw. Not rare, but raw. We sent it back. A few minutes later they placed the same salmon in front of her with a piece missing (the piece that she cut off initially to check if it was done). That was quite comical. Anyway, it still wasn't done. Sent it back. In the meantime, the hostess came over to inform us that they serve their salmon medium. Great! Give it to us medium! Just not raw. She brings us the dish back herself this time. We cut into it...still not done! At this point, my daughter has lost her appetite. We sent it back and she's done. Someone else comes over whom I'm assuming is the owner and apologizes for the whole thing. She offers to get us something else or send us home with something. That was nice but nope. We're done. She let us know that they won't charge us for the dish. Really? We didn't eat it so hope not. They should have gone further and done more like offer us something to return to show us they know what they are doing, but that's fine. I left off the part about how we had to ask multiple times for a straw, Tobasco sauce (which we never received), salt, pepper, etc. Poor service. On the plus side, the frittata was tasty (but super small!). Plenty of other places in the area so won't be back. read more

All my friends could do was rave about this place, so I decided to take my wife there for dinner. It was a Thursday night and I was concerned we would need a reservation, but we showed up nonetheless without one. Upon entering the place was clean, nicely furnished and the staff was welcoming. However, there were only 2 other couples besides us, and only 2 more showed up in the two hours we were there. The food was ok, the drinks were good and the desert was just ok. After the food was brought to our table, my wife instantly said, "We should have eaten at Mia Francesca's." That's where we will dine next time and unfortunately, we will not be dining at House 406 again. read more

House 406 provided a wonderful experience from the minute we walked through the door. It's an owner-operated, farm to table experience that serves unique dishes with super-fresh ingredients. We started with a banana-bread old fashioned (cocktail) and followed that up with the lobster crostini appetizer. Both of these were amazing and started the meal off right. The entrees were fresh, inventive, and served with personality and warmth. While we had no room for dessert, I'm sure it would have been great. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant atmosphere was very nice. My wife and I ordered a couple of their specialty cocktails and they were good and very unique. We both felt that our salads and main courses were just OK. My beef was dry and her pork chop was good but not great. However, the dessert was very good. One thing that we both found objectionable was the place smelled like cleanser. It was a little overpowering and distracted from our dinner. It might be worth a second chance as they may have had an off night however, I don't think we will return. read more

Very disappointing. Came here with a 10 person group and it was clearly more than the restaurant was capable of handling. Our waiter knew nothing about the menu and had no sense of pacing. Cocktails took about 20 minutes to show up and half of our entrees arrived cold. They also ruined two steaks in a row--the first was ordered medium rare but cooked medium well+. When they tried again, the steak was (mostly) medium rare but burned to charcoal on the outside. And the kitchen had the gall to send our waiter back out with the first steak to argue about whether it was cooked properly. I was astonished, especially as the waiter was waving an overcooked steak in my face and trying to tell me it was med-rare. read more

Our table for six was right there, and had to stand and wait 10 minutes because there was no other place to go. Finally got seated and had an attentive waiter. This restaurant was the noisiest restaurant I've ever been in! We had trouble talking across the table. People seemed to be screaming. Very unpleasant. We brought a bottle of my favorite $50.00 Cabernet, they said it would be a $30.00 corkage charge, we declined. Had a nice Malbec at $36.00. Food was bland. I had blackened whitefish, as did one of my friends. The two pieces of fish were nothing alike, even the color. Not much taste. I asked how they got the name, and was told it's the area code for Montana, where the owners have a summer home. Very nice, but didn't have any correlation at all. Why? Overall, I'd say skip this place, not many redeeming factors at all. read more

Came here for my 25th birthday and had a fantastic meal. The quality of this menu and wine selection could contend with many Chicago restaurants. First, and most important, we got a bottle of French Rosé (my personal favorite). We had the Lobster Crostinis which to die for. I made my parents leave the last one for me because I couldn't get enough. Then we shared the Burrata Salad which was fabulous as well. Not overdone with the burrata but still light. For our entrees we had organic King Salmon, walleye and short rib. Salmon was light, and the most average dish of the whole mean, yet still tasteful. The Walleye was great and fresh! And the Apple Cider Braised Short Rib, yeah the name says it all. Killer dish. Know when you come here it's going to be about $50-65 per person but it's so worth it! Highly recommend! read more

But we had the best meal, serves and beverages! Everything was amazing! I had a 6oz Filet w/Lobster for 40$! Matt has Lamb hops for $39! We came on a Saturday night with 3 couples. The service was perfect - never a water or wine glass half empty but not obtrusive. The server new the menu well and gave us great suggestions. All our dishes looked and tasted fantastic. We particularly liked the Brussels Sprouts they were great as an appetizer. The music play list was spot on. We just had a great dinner at House 406! The ambiance is sophisticated with dark walls and ceiling but with lighting that made it easy to read the menus. Service was just right. Our server, Scott, was knowledgeable about the restaurant, where and how the ingredients are sourced, and about the items on the menu themselves. He was perfectly attentive. We shared a kale Caesar salad. It was plenty for both of us - and delicious. There was just the right amount of dressing. My husband had the crab cakes but had to ask for some alteration to the accompaniments. No problem. I had the scallops. Both the crab cakes and scallops were wonderful. The presentation was nice as well. We will definitely return. read more

I was at House 406 for the third time last night. We were a party of 6 and the restaurant was half full at 7:45 P.M. The previous two time I was there the food was decent and the service was fair, so we decided to give it another shot. Although they have a limited menu, the food there is not bad, but at the same time it is really nothing special either. Last night will be my last visit to this place as our dinner for 6 took nearly 3 hours!! We waited crazy amounts of time between each course, and while the food was decent again, our water glasses sat empty and after we finished our main course, our dirty plates sat in front of us for a good 15 minutes until we had to ask them to be cleared. At that point, we asked to speak with a manager, and the owner, Jennifer, came over to our table. In a very nice way, we explained to her our experience and she could have cared less!! Rather than apologize for our bad experience, she got very defensive and said, "I didn't realize that you were in a rush." No, we were not in a rush, but no one wants to sit with empty water glasses and dirty plates in from of them for 3 hours!! She then walked away giving us all dirty looks and then when she realized that we were all so taken aback by her attitude, she returned to the table, threw 5 dessert menus on the table and told us that she would buy us dessert. Without even looking at the dessert menus, we all said no thank you at which time she picked up the menus and dropped our check on the table. Still completely stunned by her unprofessional attitude and reaction to our refusing her free desert, she came back to the table again, grabbed our check, went back to her podium, and proceeded to take 20% off of our bill. At this point, we could have cared less about the discount and just wanted to get out of that place. Through this whole encounter, she not once offered us an apology showing that clearly she did not care if we ever returned to her restaurant. Northbrook is in need of some good restaurants to go along with the many ice cream places that we already have and I will be surprised if House 406 is still here in a year from now. Their prices are not cheap and when you are going out for a nice dinner no one wants to be greeted with the kind of attitude that we experienced last night. read more

House 406 is marketed as an American steakhouse. That is why my wife and I decided to try this new place in Northbrook. We were very disappointed to see it's not a steakhouse. In fact it really should be marketed as a fish place. There are only 2 steaks on the menu. NY strip and a filet. There were at least 5 fish plates on the menu. Service was pretty good, but never knew our waiters name until I read it on the check. Both of our steaks were over cooked, but we didn't have time to send them back. The strip has better flavor the the filet. Thought it was a little pricy for what we got. Unless this so called steakhouse adds more meat choices, I doubt we will be back. Disappointed! read more

The food was really good the setting was perfect for group dinner, but I have to say it's not a big restaurant so be mindful if it's a popular night to dine out.
