We had Dr. Amy (Cottrile) perform end of life care for our dog Cinnamon yesterday. She has such a compassionate and understanding approach to providing this service, due to her years of experience with ailing pets, and their families. She helped make the journey across the "Rainbow Bridge" for our 16+ year old Miniature Poodle/Pomeranian, who was blind, unstable and suffering from advanced cognitive decline, more of a relief, than a reason for grief and despair. This might not be the case for everyone who is facing this difficult decision, as some pets might have more rapidly progressing illnesses that make this decision more "pressing", but in our case, watching Cinnamon decline on nearly a weekly basis over her final two years, it was the "right decision" for our family. Amy is an angel! Our 12 year old lab started declining rapidly, and our normal vets euthanize policy due to Covid was not something we wanted to do. I contacted Amy through email, she was prompt and so gentle. She even called me in rhe late evening to talk to me about our decision, our labs healthy and her professional vet opinion. Through the night out girl got worse and Amy came out the same evening. She is so gentle, kind, and let us take all the time we needed with Cocoa, she even took her paw print for us. We recently had to say goodbye to our little (cat) girl, and after so much struggling with the decision (which was the right one, but difficult for us to accept), we called in Dr. Amy to help us say goodbye. We coordinated a date and time through e-mail (especially important, since we didn't feel like talking to anyone), and she arrived on time (not a moment early, in which we still wanted to hug our girl, and not a moment too late, in which the agony of waiting would have been too much to bear). She took a look at our girl, and very kindly and respectfully illustrated that now was the time, and that we were making the right decision for our little one. She administered the first medication to put our baby into a deep sleep. Our baby girl was then in our arms until the process was over. It was very painful, but Dr. Amy explained everything as the process continued. She was a gentle voice to help us understand what was going on. When it was done, our girl was taken in a basket (like a kitty bassinet). The whole process was very respectful and took into account our feelings and emotional attachment. Dr. Amy showed compassion and empathy, and put our minds at ease. We miss our baby very much, but we are comforted by the fact that she spent her last moments on earth in our laps in our living room, not in a cage in cold, scary vet's office. read more

We had a cat that was in decline after a long progressing illness. Though Amy wasn't our cat's primary vet, I contacted her when it was clear our pet was suffering and I just couldn't bring him to a vet for euthanasia. Her initial phone consultation was thorough and compassionate as she patiently gathered all the information. We decided on a time and met the next day. For this difficult and painful process, Dr. Amy was prompt, sensitive and extremely efficient in her assessments or our cat and conversations with us. During the whole process she answered any questions we had (sometimes in our grief, we asked twice) and what stood out the most was her directness. Its always frustrating when medical practitioners are vague when it comes to helping the patient make decisions. After examining our cat, she was truthful about, given her veterinary experience, was going on. (this was after multiple tests run by our primary vet, not just a shot in the dark). Telling us what she was and was not certain about but nevertheless giving us likely outcomes. Dr. Amy helped us through the end of life process in a professional, sensitive and extremely calm way. When you're the grieving pet owner you end up questioning your decision and if you "missed" anything. etc. She was competent and respectful. Above all, a GREAT listener. We never felt rushed in this process or questioned for our decision. I'm confident that if there was something we overlooked, she would have let us know. I know she has a thriving practice and I can only speak to this sad part of pet ownership and care in my experience with Dr. Amy, but I am compelled to write a review on this so others know that she is just wonderful if and when that sad time comes for others. read more

Today was a very hard day for my wife and I. We had decided it was time to put our 11 year old female boxer down because of degenerative myalgia. This is a terrible disease and is similar to ALS in humans. As with all pet owners, we love our pets and letting them go is so difficult. I reached out to Dr. Cottrille and she helped us through this difficult process. Dr. Cottrille took the time to put us and our dog at ease. She gave our dog the petting and treats she loves. Amy is one of the most compassionate and understanding Veterinarians and Individuals that we have ever met. We were referred to her when we decided it was time to let our 19-year-old Lab mix finally rest. Although mobile and eating normally, there were definite signs of confusion mixed with the loss of bodily function likely brought on by Canine Dementia. She took the time to verify the symptoms and alerted us to an additional possible condition that would further complicate what she was already presenting. She's meticulous in her information gathering and consulting and reassured us that our decision was the correct one, especially given her age. Her feedback based on behaviors she had witnessed personally in addition to her diagnostics reassured us that our decision was the correct one. I feel that a pet's home environment is a far better place to observe their behavior when an end-of-life decision is being contemplated. Dr. Amy Cottrille is a wonderful veterinarian! Having a housecall vet is the best, especially because I have several cats. Taking them to the vet for routine checkups and bloodwork is very challenging. But being able to have Dr. Amy come over and check everyone at once is a Godsend. My cats don't love it but they are happier than when I pack them in the car and drive them to the vet. Having Dr. Amy come to the house keeps the stress to a minimum. She can do many things at the house that can be done in an office. Dr. Amy is very bright and knowledgeable, and when she comes up against something that is a mystery she will spend hours trying to figure it out. I have also used Dr. Amy's services for in-home euthanasia and it was the best choice I could possibly make for my pet. Rather than have to pack a sick pet into the carrier and make the trek to a vet and have those last moments in a strange room, I was able to let my pet go in his own bed, in a room where he was truly comfortable. Dr. Amy was very nice and caring with Jack but we had the worst experience with his end of life procedure. It was very difficult for to get the IV in to Jack's leg, and Jack was totally traumatized. In hindsight, it would have been much better to have given him an oral sedative prior to the IV to calm him down. Seems like that should be a standard procedure to help dogs relax during this process. read more

The time had come for us to say goodbye to our wonderful lab and we contacted Dr. Amy Cottrille. The experience is never easy, but she made bad experience as pleasant as possible. When it was determined there was nothing that could be done to prolong or improve the life of our dog she handled the situation with care and compassion. She came prepared with treats to distract our dog and comforted her right to the every end. The home experience was 1000 times better than dragging a dying dog into a vets office. If I could give Dr. Amy more than 5 stars I would. She came to our home last night, after hours, to help us with our 17 year old cat Buster who has been in declining health. Late yesterday we scheduled our normal vet to come today to euthanize Buster but, after they closed, it became apparent that he might not even make it through the night. We called many vets and Dr. Amy was the only one who was able and willing to come to our home to euthanize Buster on short notice. She was kind, caring and extremely compassionate during the little over an hour that she was here. She listened extremely well, asked us a lot of questions (some to help her understand what was going on with Buster & others just to get us talking about Buster's life), and never rushed the process. You can tell she cares deeply about the animals in her care and she gave Buster and our family a comfortable end to his life. Thank you Amy! read more

Dr. Amy Cottrille is fantastic! My 16 year old cat Louie does not tolerate going to the vet clinic. The last time he became so extremely anxious that he had to be put on oxygen. It was horrible. Dr. Amy does house calls, so it was just perfect for us. She was very calm and gentle with him, and helped him to feel safe and at ease; but also she got the necessary medical examination and procedures done. She was able to draw a blood sample from my sweet Louie just fine and I wasn't sure that could ever be done after his last visit. It is obvious how much she loves and cares for animals!
