The roof is one piece of the house where you typically don't see areas of damage on a routine basis. As for gutters, they need to be washed yearly but I've been negligent. Howard explained to me over the phone about the nuances of roof cleaning vs gutter cleaning and how many home insurance companies can deny coverage for overgrown moss on the roof. Guess they use drones with cameras across neighborhoods. Jeffrey was my main point person for repairs and cleaning. He did a great job in a number of areas: 1. I found out about HousePrep via a neighbor and we're so glad we went with their services! They do a phenomenal job and prices are very reasonable/fair for the quality of work that they do. We've had them come by to fix a roof leak (during a day where it was pouring--Howard got back to me via phone within half an hour and Jeffrey came by about an hour later + fixed the issue in another hour as well as some other things that would benefit from repair/maintenance so that we didn't end up with more damage from the storm!). They sent over a quote for the non-emergent repairs/gutter cleaning + set up a date for this. Jeffrey was punctual/professional and even came by with dog treats for Tofu (who was having a field day/way too excited about alerting me all morning that there was someone outside). In November we got our gutters cleaned and new gutter guards installed by HousePrep. We absolutely love this business. First, it's local which we love supporting local businesses. But also Howard and his team are extremely knowledgeable. They know everything about gutters but they also know a ton about roofing which in my opinion go hand in hand. We reached out to another company (a franchise who only works on gutters) and I found that HousePrep could diagnosis and solve problems way better, honestly. If we did not go with HousePrep I can tell you right now that we would still be encountering various problems. Jefferey literally goes up on the roof with a hose to mimic a heavy rainfall and can locate all issues. We had some parts where rain was not flowing properly into the gutter so it would fall off the roof and pool close to our foundation. We got that done in November and I'm writing now because we just had a ridiculous amount of rainfall and everything is flowing perfectly! There is no more pooling! I'm so happy. Now I can enjoy the rain instead of panicking that my foundation is going to flop. Aside from their work, the team is great. They're so nice, respectful and easy to talk to. I really enjoyed working with them. I think what's really important to remember is that they get really busy because they're are awesome. I know most issues don't pop up until the heavy rainfall comes but they can diagnosis issues without rain so try to snatch them up in the off season! You won't regret it! Guess Howard and his crew are so busy that they can waste people's time and then just ghost you. Had an appointment setup for an estimate to come out to do a roof cleaning in preparation for solar install, something Howard said they are experts at due to the amount they've done before. One of his employees came out, inspected the roof and said we'd need to let them know where the solar panels were being located and to contact Howard so we can email him the solar plans. What Howard didn't say, so I'm saying it here for his potential future inquires, is that he'll waste your time with a site visit, insuring someone has to be home, then once done, they don't call you, reach out or contact you in anyway. We had used house prep before on our old house. They did a wonderful job then and they did not disappoint us this time. We had built a new house but we now have a ton of leaves building up on the roof and blocking the cutter system. They were able to come out almost immediately assessed what needed to be done and did it. Well I love most about them is they know they're going to make a mess by blowing the leaves off the roof. So first they blow. Then they run water over to clean everything including the gutters and then they go down to the ground and they clean up the leaves. They've dropped down there. You don't have to worry about them making a mess in your back or your front yard. It keeps us from slipping on leaves and at our age that's very important. Let me tell you about these guys... Five stars is not enough. I called House Prep to clean out my gutters. I have a concrete tile roof and I'm terrified of sending anyone up there because the tiles are fragile. They said they could handle the job without breaking any tiles. I've had a leak in my bedroom for FOUR YEARS. I've had no less than three roofers up there, including some very highly respected roofers in the area. They keep telling me they fixed the leak. The last roofer told me to have the pool solar raised, which I did using another reputable pool solar company. Still, with all the recent storms, the leak got worse. It's was raining in my bedroom. I was depressed with nobody to turn to. The last roofer I spoke to told me to have the solar removed, as the leak was probably under there, but the pool solar company, the only game in town, refused to call me back. Jeff came out and did the gutter cleaning and told me they also fix leaks. He figured the leak was under the pool solar. He called a buddy to learn how to work on the pool solar. He got up there and removed it, and found a horrible patch job on a broken tile. Jeff fixed that, several tiles, cleared debris off the roof, and fixed the problem after I spent thousands of dollars on with three different roofers. Howard even changed his schedule around to get Jeff out here before the next storm. Every time I'd used a gutter cleaning service, they leave the leaves on the ground and my yard guy has to clean up. Not Jeff. He blew out the leaves himself. My issue is, nobody seems to care anymore. I cannot see the work they do on the roof. So they do a faulty, ugly patch job and figure by the time it rains, they'll be long gone. Howard and Jeff really care, and their professionalism and workmanship is unparalleled. I searched for quite a while to find someone to replace tiles broken by a previous contractor going on the roof, and recent storm damage. It turns out that our tiles are somewhat fragile, and secured to the roof by screws which made removal of the broken tiles complex and time consuming. When I received the quote for the tile work and for cleaning the gutters and valleys it was higher than I'd anticipated, but I had a good feeling about Howard and Jeffrey during my interactions with them so I went ahead with the project. It's really refreshing to find people like Howard and Jeffrey that are really good at what they do and are thoroughly nice guys. Jeffery was like a 'cat' navigating over our roof and did an incredible job with both the tile replacement and cleaning. He went above and beyond to help salvage damaged tiles as they are now obsolete. They provided before and after pictures so we could see what was done, and kept in constant dialogue about times they would arrive. If these guys say they can do the job, you can rest assured that they'll do great work. Amazingly efficient and professional. Started with hiring them to clean my (24) Solar Panels (which had not been cleaned since the installation in 2017). Going in I knew they were caked with soot (from the numerous fires) and moss. Once on the roof, Howard took pictures of the many broken panels and other roof issues. I had not addressed the roof since I moved in 20 years ago. Basically, because of the lack of rain, I hadn't had any issues with leaks. BUT there were BIG issues with moss and other debris. Howard estimated what I needed done and documented a VERY thorough estimate. He and his mate (Jay, I think) did the work, were extremely thorough in the cleanup and overall were extremely professional. Even in this heat, both gentlemen retained their positive attitude and were extremely cautious, thoughtful and professional. I got LOADS of photos of my roof at the end of the (3-day) project. Everything looks great, and I think I got great value for the price charged. They even wiped down my windows after the pressure washing; so I got my windows washed as a "bonus"! I am extremely happy with Howard and Jeff's work. There is a broken tile on my roof and it caused a water leak. I was cheated by some drive-by gutter clean guys in the past. I was worried that I could be overcharged again for a small replacement job. But when I met Howard, I could tell he is honest and could be fully trusted. The price for replacing the tile is very reasonable. He also inspected the whole roof and told me there are many titles shifted. The price he offers is well within my expectations. We learned our 20 year old two-story stucco house needed considerable roof work, when we had gutter guards installed. The guy who did the gutter guards (Mike Petteruti) did not do roof work, but he took pictures and told us what we needed. Our biggest problem was that we had pigeon poo under our solar panels which were installed in October 2010, that required HazMat removal and not very many roofers could do the entire job. I checked on Yelp and found the reviews for House Prep Home Services (Howard Bass), so we got a quote from both him and a roofer that Mike Petteruti found for us who did pigeon poo removal. For the bid, Howard got up on the roof and did a complete inspection and found a few other problems, but the other guy gave us a quote based on Mike's photos with a disclaimer on the bottom about "unforeseen problems." Since the other guy hadn't been on the roof, I thought that gave him an excuse to escalate his charges. We went with Howard Bass of House Prep Home Services (925 389-1203) and were extremely pleased. The first and most onerous chore was cleaning all the bird poop out from under the solar panels. Howard spoke to our neighbor adjacent to the solar panels and arranged to clean up any of the droppings that fell into the neighbor's yard as well as those that fell in our yard. Then he fitted custom made mesh guards under the panels so no birds or rodents can get under them in the future. The concrete tiles had shifted into the valleys and some were cracked. There were also cracks in the flashing. House Prep repaired those cracks. Two of the gutters have severe turns in the downspouts and had developed leaks. We had to wait until there was long stretch of dry weather before those repairs were done, but HousePrep fixed that. Howard noticed that the non-structural beams (for the Craftsman Style look) of the house did not have any paint on top. We had had all of the trim repainted in 2018. Howard thinks the tops were painted, but that the wood was not properly prepared, so in less than two years, all of the paint peeled off. When he redid the work, he prepped the wood about a week before painting it, so that the sealant was fully dry before it was painted. Throughout the job, Howard was very good with his communications and kept us informed on when he would do different parts of the job. We couldn't have been more pleased. It was just dumb luck that we wanted the gutters covered and found out about all of the incipient leaks before we noticed any of them. Since no trees overhang the two-story portion of our home, we had no idea that we had any issues except to do with the gutters on our separate one-story garage that is overhung by an oak tree. We knew those gutters were in dire need of cleaning, but thought the others were fine. read more
