I'm EXTREMELY picky when it comes to my Chinese food...so when I had moved to Patchogue in 2001 after living in Islip Terrace/East Islip my whole life I was on the search for a really good place. Not that they were really any fantastic ones by where I grew up since a lot of them have closed over the years. A woman I taught with who lived in Bluepoint told me that's who she used... and since I was teaching East of Patchogue it was perfect to use that restaurant... convenient to pick up food on the way home from work or would even just drive out there to get it if it wasn't a work day and over the summer. Everything about the food was delicious. They could actually understand what you were saying without having to repeat your order 27 times. Honored all of your requests and made everything properly if I said no bean sprouts or white onion it was never in my food. Whether you're ordering for 1 or 20 people the orders always come out correct & fresh. They have a dining room section that you can sit in and eat & be waited on I've only done that once. Otherwise I normally would just go and place my order & wait. I moved out of the area & state near end of 2013 BUT I still come to Long Island every month for 7-10 days at a clip & when I CRAVE Chinese food this is where I go. Even though I'm normally in bed Islip Terrace / East Islip area I will drive all the way out there order it and get it to go it's worth driving out there and getting it that's how good it is well worth it. read more

Being a vegetarian limits your dining out experiences. I've found How May to be excellent at altering dishes to my needs. the food is always fresh and it's always ready to pick up. Deep fried tofu with garlic sauce and vegetables is my staple. They prepare brown rice with vegetables for me as well- and it's always great. Friends who order more traditional fare are always satisfied. This place has been here for like 30 years and I can understand why- it's good. Nope!!! Never again. Found a dead fly AND a roach in my food (this was in the dining section) and there were roaches running around on the table while we were sitting there and on the floor under our table. The food was soso at best but after the bug episode it wouldn't have mattered if it was the best I ever had, will never go back or order from there again. Horrible experience. read more

Was a usual customer here and am actually revising my previous good review. Stopping coming here at least for a little while. Would order from here almost twice a week and about 1 out of 5 times the chicken will be very tough and chewy and taste like it's gone a little bad or sat too long or maybe they're buying cheap chicken sometimes? Not too sure but all I know is when that happens it's like the worst Chinese I've ever tasted though most of the time it's decent I don't feel like chancing it anymore and am just bringing my business down the street to Best Meal Chinese. Never disappoints! 30 years I have been a fan, and 30 years satisfied! Is it Michelin, and Zagat standards? Probably not, but as far as Chinese take out goes, it is always Delish! As far as dine-in standards go, I'd have to say above average, as most Chinese places these days have dumpy tables set up by the take-out counter, and here, they have a separate dining room. We were fans until my husband was totally ignored. He went in for a take out order. The lady behind the counter threw the menu at him then totally ignored him as did the rest of the staff. Other people walked in and the lady filled out their order form and took the order. My husband asked did he offend her in any way being the gentleman he is and he was still ignored. My family has been using How May since the third day they were in business. I have been eating here since I am old enough for solid food, so that's over 30 years! Let me begin by saying that there has NEVER been a roach or cleanliness issue at How May Kitchen EVER. In 30+ years, with 1-2 visits per WEEK, I would know. The staff is a hard working, likable, friendly family that I have grown fond of seeing. They have THE best wonton hands down; nobody else comes even close! Their fried rice still sets the bar, and it used to be even better! The food is usually delicious, and consistent. Sounds fantastic, right? So why only 3 stars? Well, at one time, it would have been five stars. It still COULD be. However, they have taken some cost cutting measures that take away from the quality. The noodles that come with the soup used to be exponentially better than the ones they serve now. They are using more oil in dishes than they used to. If I can TASTE oil, or it leaves a coat on my tongue, it's too much, period. The fried rice USED to have scallion, bean sprout, and scrambled egg in it, sadly it no longer does. I'm saddened that the very things that made How May stand head and shoulders above the crowd are the very things that they are changing. I have actually been going to a different place the last month, and it feels like I am having an affair. I hope How May sees this, and understands that this is coming from a life long, loyal customer who is unhappy with the new direction they are taking. Second time in the past 2 months that they screwed up my order. You circle items on menu but they STILL place the wrong item containers in bag. BE CAREFUL!!! While the food is good it is an EXTREMELY long wait even with a phone order due to NOT being overcrowded but being DISORGANIZED!!! read more

my family and i order from this resturant quit often and have given them much business today i called in an order lady said it would take about 15 mins i get there in 25mins as i pay for the order older woman wished me a happy new year same to her i replied didnt bother chk order my mistake but i immediatly called bk to let them know that my dinner was missing not only did i hv to drive back up to the resturant no parking had to wait for my dinner to be made same lady says oh im gonna give this to u because there was no extra meals up there basically sayin to me that what im tryin to steal a meal i got better manners then that i swore to her i would never ever order from there again. If you like "chunkier" pork in your rice as some here of mentioned then this is the place for you. Patchogue has the crappiest Chinese food restaurants and take out on Long Island. I've lived/worked locally for over 25 yrs, and ALL the people I work with avoid this place like the plague. It's the same owner and nasty women at the counter. Not a smile on anyone's face here except the owner. The chicken (I DARE YOU TO ORDER IT) soup, or chicken anything dishes tastes like thin rubber.....it's SO chewy, processed, and fatty. YEARS ago this place was the best around. The economy has swallowed this place up and they've gone the route of buying crappy food rather than raising their prices and continuing with quality food. They use a TON of MSG and you'll be very sleepy if you choose this dump. It's not the cleanest place either but neither is most Chinese places. Over priced for below average food. The people who give this place a good/great review are clueless! read more
