Found water dripping onto my basement floor and called Howald. Lucky for me my favorite guy Sam Byrd was on call this Saturday and was there within the hour! He quickly found the issue and got to work. Not an easy task working with galvanized 100 year old water lines but he managed to replace the cracked leaking pipe in no time. He is super friendly and quite competent having resolved other plumbing issues for me in the past that others told me I would have to tear out the plaster walls and replace the pipes!! Please don't use this plumbing service unless you enjoy spending unnecessary money. We were out of the country when we kept getting texts that our backup sump and battery fuse were malfunctioning. Since Howald installed it 4-5 years ago, our house sitter called them. Andrew came out and said that the backup sump and battery was bad and needed replacing immediately to the tune of $1600.00. According to the house sitter he was very unprofessional and sarcastic because she didn't consent to replacing it. I called another plumbing company (Steve Morin Plumbing) who came out the next day. They tested the backup and main sump pumps and battery backup and said all were working properly. Don't trust Howald! read more

My last two experiences with Howald have been very disappointing. We are on their scheduled maintenance plan and have been a customer for six years. Shortly after their last maintenance visit in the spring we noticed water all over our basement floor. Turns out the condensate drain was blocked, as it obviously wasn't cleaned as part of the scheduled maintenance. They sent a tech out to fix it (can't do the job right but always have time to do the job over) at no charge and we were left to clean up the mess. Today they were supposed to come out again for a maintenance check. They called yesterday to confirm the appointment but DIDN'T SHOW. I called their office and received a call back stating they had a tech out sick and had to reschedule their appointments. Too bad they didn't call me on the number I gave them to reach me, even though the person I spoke to stated their CSR log showed a note with the correct number and it also showed they called a different one. I guess poor service, cutting corners and failure to follow directions is simply becoming the "new normal" these days... 12/8/22 UPDATE: Howald rescheduled, sent a tech on time, and David did a great job answering my questions and giving our furnace a thorough inspection. Plumber was friendly, professional and prompt. But pricing is what I'd have to call "gouging." $321 to replace a leaking toilet shutoff valve. Ouch. And they charge $95 just to show up, so when the plumber quoted me $321, if I had turned it down I would have been stuck paying $95 for nothing. No-win situation. When making the appointment I explained exactly what was needed, later the plumber told me they had flat pricing. I wish they would've told me that over the phone, instead I had to pay $95 to find out. It was a 10 minute job to install a $10 part, I just have no idea how they justify that pricing. read more

I knew my 18-year-old air conditioner was probably beyond repair when it was not cooling the house this summer. I called Howald for service anyway, just in case. Their technician gave me the option of repair and laid out a repair plan, but I wasn't shocked at all when his best recommendation was a system replacement, especially since the AC was paired with an electric furnace and was the most inefficient method of heating and cooling I could have. After consulting with Don from sales, who was a former technician himself, they were able to provide a heat pump/electric furnace system that I could afford and will save me money in operating costs. The install team worked very fast and the new system was operating in much less time than I had imagined it would take. My experience with them mirrors my neighbors' for the most part; I like this place because they were fast to come to my home (they fixed my AC unit the same day). Our air conditioner wasn't working to peak performance, so we called Howald. The technician said it was just a dirty filter that he'd clean but would have to charge us $100 for an emergency repair. Total of about $186. He told us the hardware was fine and there was no coolant problem. The system still wasn't working correctly, so we called in another company. They diagnosed a broken coolant coil and that we'd lost several pounds of coolant. We're in the process of building a master bedroom with en suite bath in our attic along with piping HVAC to parts of our house that weren't set up with heating or cooling. It's an old, quirky little house in SoBro. Before calling Howald we had three companies to our home in order to get estimates for the work we needed done. I would give Howald 6 stars if I could! I signed on for a service contract on my rental last year and I just renewed. In the last year and a half, they've serviced my heating and air, and even installed a sump pump, at a really reasonable price! They also came out recently to investigate a mystery leak in the bathroom and again fixed it at a very reasonable price. I had to make a service call today when my tenants told me the heat was out, and Howald came out same-day, fixed it, and changed the filter and did the maintenance call at the same time. Should have called them first. Tim explained everything in detail and in a way I could understand. He has over 24 years experience and was willing to work with me on price. Their bid was $300 less than all others and he was the only guy that actually listened to me and didn't try to up-sell me or push something I didn't want. Set up install 2 days later and their Installers (Jason and Chris) actually showed up 20 minutes early. They have been working together for over ten years and one knows what the other needs or is thinking without asking asking. They work in perfect tandem and knocked out the job in less than 5 hours. They displayed a thorough mastery of knowledge on every question I had during the install and left my house cleaner than it was before they showed up.
