Where do I start? The service was amazing, the food incredible and the vibe just right. Visiting and new to town for a little anniversary getaway! We thought we would have to wait till we drove to Chicago for good food. This place is welcoming, charming and modern. I ordered the sea bass with vodka pasta and my husband the lamb lollipop with roasted potatos. Both were 10/10. We are very picky and self proclaimed foodies. For dessert we shared the tiramisu. It was good. 9/10 for small size and a tiny bit dry. The flavors were well balanced though. We sat on the Fiori side but had a choice of sitting on either side and can order from both menus. True gets mentioned in the local Facebook vegan groups a lot, and I was recently inspired to go there based on some of the new menu items that were mentioned. Their standard menu does not feature their vegan options, so we had to wait for the waitress to come back around again to ask for this. Unfortunately, the Vegan Chicken Breast was crossed off, so I'm not sure if that will be coming back. I went with the Vegan Reuben, a reliable standard, but it was terribly disappointing. It prompted me to pull up my photos from our previous dining experience there, and the sandwich looks so much more unappetizing. The current sandwich is wet, pale, and oddly sweet. My wife and I decided to visit this place in April for her birthday. The atmosphere was great, they had a band that Saturday we were there, the drinks were great food was great, So we decided to go for my birthday. The worst decision we could have made. My wife had the same pasta dish she had on her birthday. It was dry and had no flavor. She asked for some Parmesan but that didn't help the flavor. She asked for some salt but you couldn't get it out of the shaker. The salt was caked in the shaker and it had rust at the top of it when I unscrewed the top to see why it wouldn't come out. Came here on a Tuesday evening and it is a standalone building that split into two with the two different restaurants owned by this company. Luckily it also has its own parking lot and finding parking was easy. The menus you can order from both restaurants and have similarities, which is interesting such as the calamari, which is the appetizer we ordered. Interestingly, enough, the calamari is priced differently on both menus depending on which one you look at with a difference of three dollars. Overall, the food portions were very good. They also have some specials. The menu is very straightforward and luckily for us carnivores had a lot of choices. Service was very friendly and kind and the food came out very quickly. The bread service is a little bit off. They probably could actually serve you the olive oil with the cheese and the pepper so that you could actually dip it more for your bread. I do wish the calamari came with legs not just rings. The steak was perfectly cooked and the fries were delicious as well. The barbecue special that my friend ordered did not disappoint. We both absolutely cleaned up our plates and did not have room for dessert. This is definitely spot if you're in the area to check out great fun ambience. The food was pretty good. We sat and ordered from the Fiori menu, but you can sit on either side Fiori/ True eat and order from either menu. The environment was relaxing and well decorated. The staff was friendly, the head chef even came out and made her rounds with tables checking in! We started with the calamari which was good, I love that they give you a big ramekin of marinara, you'll never run out! Usually BBQ restaurants smell like, well, BBQ. This did not. We went at 5pm (we stayed at the hotel right behind) and it was a ghost town. Food wasn't bad. I had the mac and cheese with chicken, but there was almost zero chicken. To the point that my boss offered to give me some of his because he noticed there was nothing in there. Just a few small bits. Mac and cheese was good, but nothing mind blowing. The sauces had a weird taste we couldn't put our finger on. All three sort of tasted the same and had the same ingredient that just didn't go. I come to the area for work about once a month. This restaurant is hands-down, one of the most hidden gems in the region. It's very affordable compared to most restaurants of this caliber. The brisket, pulled pork, fish, are above average. The rueben is hands-down the best Reuben I have ever had. The chicken wings as the appetizer are amazing. The shrimp cocktail is also really good. Their cocktails are very good. The "Gettin Figgy With It" is my all time favorite drink. $12 a pop but worth $20!! We are starting to notice me when I go in this place and the staff are super friendly and super awesome. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed. They have tons of bourbon as well. Moderately priced. If you want to try a good bourbon, but don't want to lie an entire bottle that is hundreds of dollars, I would highly recommend giving this place a try. BBQ & Whiskey a Great Match!! I had the chance to try Tru BBQ & Whiskey Bar again when I was in the Munster area. I had eaten there before with a large group and always wanted to return to try more things. Tru has a great selection of drinks especially of course, Whiskey from around the world. Did you know that Tru also serves Vegan dishes? This means there is food that most people can enjoy. On this visit, I tried the homemade chips which had an excellent seasoning on them and they were also crispy and delicious. I also used them to try out the BBQ sauces. Nest up was the Fried Ribs, served with Alabama Sauce and Mild BBQ over Southwest Slaw. A very tasty and filling dish on its own. I was hungry that night and was able to finish those fall-off-the-bone ribs. For my main course, I had their Beef Brisket, slowly smoked for hours with a side of mashed potatoes and more slaw. I chose the slaw since although it's served with fried ribs, it tends to get covered in white sauce and Mild BBQ sauce. To wash this all down I chose a Rye Whiskey from Utah. The High West Double Rye was excellent and could give most Canadian Whiskeys a run for their money. This was an excellent meal and I left with a full belly. Tru BBQ & Whiskey has three locations in Northern Indiana and is a hot spot for BBQ and Whiskey lovers. I'll be sure to visit the other two locations when I'm in the area again. read more

I was excited to try the vegan Reuben but it was pretty unappetizing - the seitan looked and tasted like prepackaged seitan deli slices (which to me is ... not good). Finally got around to trying this place after the change from Tru. We sat at the bar and were served by Cindy who was great. Ordered the fig Old Fashioned and it was amazing. Definitely ordered a second one. For dinner I had a half rack of St. Louis ribs which were very good. On Mondays they have a whole slab for $16. They run out fast so don't bank on getting any unless you go early. The place is nicely decorated. They still have plenty of whiskeys. No draft beer and only one tv. We will be back. read more

We wanted to try True because of the Whiskey Flights and try a new Barbecue Spot.. They give A BIG portion of food and the food wasn't bad but I don't have to go back again. It's closing in a few weeks anyway so if you want to try it hurry up!! It's very pretty inside. The decor is really nice.. BUT they had a lot of bugs flying around which I absolutely did NOT like!! The special was all you can eat rib tips but they had run out by 7pm. I ordered a loaded baked potato and they had NO Butter or Sour Cream. WTF!! Instead of bread they give chips and pickles which was different.. I'm not into Kettle chips so I tried one and didn't eat them but the pickles were sweet I liked those.. my beef brisket was extremely tender but but much flavor.. the jumbo shrimp were good. The salad was a basic house salad. The pork ribs were tender but my date said they were not done enough for him too pink inside he likes his food well done.. the fries were good so the food I'll give a 3 out of 5. Two things wrong: One, I ordered for delivery with Door Dash. Not that the delivery was bad. I just don't think the food got a fair review because it wasn't presented fresh upon ordering it. Two, I ordered the brisket nachos. Starting with the nachos. They were really all over the place. I liked the pieces of burnt ends but the chips were mostly soggy and it turned out to be more like soup than nachos. I couldn't even tell what all the melted stuff was all together. Needless to say I did not finish them and will not get them again. The macaroni and cheese was okay. I'm not a big fan of Mac and cheese but always thought bbq joints had the best. This had zero flavor to me. It was creamy and cooked well but no flavor. The brisket was the stand out. So tender snd tasty. It lasted me two meals because of how large the portion was. However again it would have been better to eat this in the restaurant instead of delivery. A side of bread would have been a great touch. Maybe some pickles or onions. I'm used to that being served alongside brisket from Texas. The spicy sauce was good. Sweet and not as spicy as I thought. I may try this again but I think the prices looked decent enough. If you're looking forward to eating BBQ don't waste your time and money at this place. We should have considered it to be a warning when we couldn't find the restaurant because the sign was sooo small. True Eats is actually attached to an Italian restaurant offering 2 menus, one of them being BBQ. We ordered shrimp cocktail that was served warm...a bit rubbery to add to the flavor. I ordered Brisket, a typical BBQ food but it was soooo dry that I had to send it back. In exchange I received Pork Butt that was equally disappointing. My partner ordered BBQ spare ribs which were also luke warm at best and both meals appeared to be yesterday's left overs. Oh, I forget to tell you that we didn't get served our drinks until after the main course arrived. This is my second time here and I absolutely love the service and the food. The crowd levels were very small and adequately placed a part for social distancing. We were greeted at the front by a gentleman and I had asked if we could sit somewhere warm and it was honored with no hesitation. Our server recommended the Valentine's Day speciality drinks and of course we tried them. When I say the were out of this world that is a complete understatement!!! My 500th Yelp review and you would never guess what I am writing about as over 200 of my reviews are about BBQ! Most of the time, my BBQ trips are planned. Not this one though! I played Yelp Roulette to find True BBQ. And it was quite the find! First of all, you are brought BBQ chips and pickles when you are seated. The chips taste like they are made in-house and have True's special rub on them. The pickles are thick and are hamburger dill chips. They go really well with the BBQ. As I look at the menu, the prices stuck out to me. This isn't the most expensive BBQ joint I have been to but it is pricey. BBQ prices vary wildly from BBQ joint to BBQ joint. I have been to some that give you 2 meats and 2 sides for as low as $10 and now this...1 meat and 1 side is $20. Want another meat and another side? It's $5 more. All I had to say was this better be pretty epic BBQ. Thank goodness it was. I chose brisket and white cheddar mac and cheese. I didn't know brisket like this existed in Indiana because it tasted just like it was from Texas. It was marbled, tender, and the bark tasted similar to black pepper beef jerky. The mac and cheese was creamy and it had crumbles on top as well as the smooth, white cheddar flavor. There are 4 sauces - mild, hot, raspberry, and white. I have never had a raspberry BBQ sauce. It tasted like raspberry and surprisingly, it went extremely well with the brisket. The mild is a tangy, tomato-type with the hot having a little heat to it. Little being the key word. The white sauce I had to ask for and being from the proud state of Alabama, I should be an expert on Alabama white sauce. I would say this one had a stronger mayo flavor than any other I have had before so my guess is that other ingredients were added lightly compared to other white sauces I have had. It was still pretty good though. True BBQ will be a BBQ joint I revisit here again in the future as I live in Indiana. Wow!!! Visited this place two+ weeks ago and still talking about it today! As a vegetarian, I tend to have little to no options in terms of BBQ. However, True BBQ has a full section for veggies! I was so excited that the worst part was truly having to pick only one dish cuz we all know my eyes are bigger than my stomach. I got the jackfruit bbq sandwich and it was amazing!! Ordered the filet and potatoes. Requested medium rare, it came out overly well and almost charred. It took 30+ minutes to get the food so I was running a little short on time. Heard about this location from my brother. Dont normally go this far south for dinner. However, I was in the area and decided to go. Nice ambience, host/servers were pleasant and inviting. First thing they bring you are these homemade chips that have this rub that they cook with sprinkled on it. Couldn't stop eating them. The STL ribs I ordered were extremely tender. The asparagus was cooked nicely. The chicken smoked was tender. The sauces were great yo me, especially the hot. They had a raspberry sauce which I loved, my gurl thought it was ok. We only had time for 1 drink before we had to get dressed for a wedding, and you can't get much more convenient than a bar located across the parking lot from the hotel! We were very pleasantly surprised. Service from Delon was fabulous....he made some great bourbon suggestions for our drinks (and they were well made)....and he was on top of getting the snacks quickly from the kitchen, when we told him we were in a bit of a rush. Although on Yelp this restaurant appears as closed, it isnt. It is open under new management. The right sight of the business is still known as "True" and is more causual yet boasts an elegant atmosphere and gorgeous full bar. The left side of the establishment offers an Italian flare and is just now up and going. It is beautifully decorated and offers a nice quiet enviroment. I've visited True a couple of times with my dear favorite foodie and drink friend. We loved Cindy the lovely Thursday night bartender. She is great at her job and provides excellent service and has great menu and drink knowledge.Any questions? Just ask Cindy. If you like to try new and unique cocktails as I do be sure to try a few of theirs. Need a little drink altering? Cindy will make your drink just like you like it. Their new manager is excellent and 100% old school about customer service. Back to food....They have one of the best Rueben sandwiches I've ever tried and their side of brussel sprouts are bursting with flavor. Went here bc another place was closed. Wanted a flight but they were out of so many whiskey options we decided against it. We got cocktails that were really good though. The food was meh. Nothing great but definitely not bad. I had a brisket salad which was huge and tasty. The brisket was tender too. The fried rib app is not actually fried but it's still good and the slaw they serve with it is too. Overall, I'd go back to the bar but I don't have to have the food again. I wasn't thrilled by the menu online but it was close to our hotel and my coworker wanted to have some fancy whisky. I cannot explain how wrong I was. I really wanted a burger, and not barbecue, and had worried that the slim number of burger choices meant it wasn't the chef's forte'. The waiter was unquestionably knowledgeable and incredibly professional. He rattled off deep-level knowledge of both the fresh choices available that day and answered every question about any whisky on their long bar menu without Batting an eye. Guys, the burger I had was likely the best I have ever had and possibly the best I will ever have. I wasn't even hungry! I couldn't eat it all at the table, and took the last half with me back to the hotel. As soon as I wasnt uncomfortably full anymore, that last but was back on my palette. So juicy and perfectly cooked, with fresh bread and the absolute perfect proportions of toppings and sauce, This is the burger they serve in heaven. The fries it came with were curly wedges, which aren't my favorite, but the perfection of the crispness and favor of the batter was wonderful. We sat outside in wonderful August evening weather and while walking back through the building, I was glad we did. The inside is beautiful, but a totally different ambiance than the rustic-shiek outside. Overall I had low expectations and was completely surprised. We got the dry rub chicken wings, Mac and Cheese balls and the burnt tips for appetizers. The chicken wing was good especially paired with the raspberry bbq sauce and the burnt tips was flavorful and tender. I got the fried chicken and the batter was crispy and the meat was tender and juicy especially considering it's breast meat. I didn't care too much for the coleslaw but the roasted cauliflower paired really well with the chicken. I tried some of the cornbread with the honey butter and it tasted like cake! I would also really recommend the fries. They come in a thick half spiral that's crunchy on the outside and soft and creamy in the middle. Our server came by with the dessert cart and we ended up getting the cream puff, peanut butter pie and the chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are normally served with the milk shake but we opted out since we were already so full. The pie was okay but the cookies were definitely my favorite. My friend and I had dinner at True. Neither of us had ever been so I was looking forward to something new. Once we sat down we where given kettle chips and pickles. They looked like bbq chip but where just plain and the pickles were sweet. We order drinks and appetizers. Which came quickly. We had salmon hush puppies and chicken wings. Both had very nice flavor. Whatever the dry rub is on the wings is lovely and smoky. They gave us 3 bbq sauces for the wings. Hot, mild and raspberry. All of which tasted exactly the same. We order our main dishes ; my friend had ribs with mashed potatoes and I had the Bison burger with a beet/goat cheese salad. My burger meat itself had nice flavor but the more I ate the sweeter it tasted. Only ate half which I deconstructed to only eat the burger to try any cut the sweet sauce on the bread. My friend said they were really good. Very tender and flavorful. Since everything I had eaten was sweet I wanted something savory. I asked our server what drinks aren't sweet. She recommended the Guns and Rose'. I order it and it was So cute! But sweeter then cocktail I had before. I evened up not drinking and sent it back. I feel bad about it because someone had to work hard to make that and it's a wasted product. Unfortunately it was just Too sweet. When she asked if I wanted anything I decided because I figured anything else was just going to be sweet. I just chugged water. I really enjoyed myself. My whiskey flight was curated by the bartender and she did a phenomenal job. I also enjoyed the blood orange martini. The brisket was so tender and the hot bbq sauce had just the right amount of spice. The Old fashioned? GREAT!! And that's about it. Had steak the Mrs had ribs. I needed to use steak sauce, and I never use steak sauce. Ribs had to be sent back due to still being cold. They were pre-cooked obviously off-site. My steak was pretty much cooked on one side. Then flipped for a few seconds to give it some color. No very impressive. So, I can't believe I haven't been to True BBQ since I've lived in Munster! I was actually here for a happy hour, but didn't get to try any food so I didn't feel like a eating was fair...anyway! My family and I went last week as we heard they had really festive Christmas decorations and we wanted to check them out! It looks adorable in side! My kids loved all the fun decorations and the decor is really nice. It's got an upscale vibe and I love the fireplace and the stationary larger tables in the center. The bar is decked out too! The food was really good and the service was great! We had some fun holiday cocktails, they have a special menu offering them, so fun! They came in cute glasses too! We had the Cajun shrimp to start which was cooked perfectly. My husband and I both got the 2 meat plate because we couldn't decide on which ones to try The portions are actually the perfect size, I was glad it wasn't massive, totally doable! I had the turkey and the sausage and my husband had the brisket and pulled pork. Our favorites were the sausage and the pulled pork! We tried the Brussels (so good!), the beet and goat cheese (amazing!), the cornbread (good, a little dense), and the elote (there was something about this one I didn't love, but to each their own).
