Giovanni's had a prime rib deal going on in December for $39. We decided to order it. I thought what kind of prime rib we can expect for this low price was puzzling to me, but we tried it. Prime rib is a normally a roasted meat but the friendly waitress asked how we liked it prepared and charred was of the two options presented to us. It was like we couldn't get the usual rare, medium or well-done scope of options. When it arrived, it was not the Prime Rib I was accustomed too but a charred thin steak with overboard seasoning. Being a man and a birthday party honoree, I decided to not complain or send it back as such would have been a very rude, unappreciative gesture to my host, I thought. What I learned here is this is not a place known for Prime Rib or steaks as it is an Italian eatery, stick with pizza and pasta dishes for the best satisfaction. Lesson learned. read more

Came in on a Friday around 9 and really enjoyed the cozy-comfortable atmosphere and they had a nice two piece band playing some old hits. Our server was really nice and even though she forgot the extra bread and water fill ups - we were treated nicely. And our food came out in perfect timing. Our food came with a side and also soup so we ordered the lobster bisque. I liked the taste of it but the lobster and onions were diced up and there was so much of it that it just didn't taste good. Onto the entrees I ordered the chicken Marsala and it came with two good sized chicken breasts and I opted for the fettuccine Alfredo on the side. Overall I give it a 7/10 - it hit the mark but wasn't impressive. We also ordered the Parmesan crusted 8 oz filet for $35. We asked for medium but it came out medium rare. Was a bit bland but we ate it. Overall we won't be back for a while but it's a good place to try when you want some Italian from an old school joint. read more

Been going to Giovanni's since the early 1980's. We would do lunch there and the service / food was great. Pro and dad would speak for hours always making lunch a 2-3 hour endeavor. In 1994 Pro died and Pro's daughter Mary took over and sold it in 2020. Personally moved out of the area around 2000. We would still go to eat there 1-2 times year. From 1994 to around 2000 service / food did decline some ; sometimes service would be great and food would be so so or vice versa. Our visits after 2000 with new owners were good. Food and service was great. My wife had a birthday party there for me in July, 2025. My children, grand children and friends were there. Service and food were great. In September 2025 we went for our anniversary. We sat in the bar area next to the entertainment which was excellent. That night though the waitress was not attentive at all and so bad that we were going to walk out due to lack of service. I ordered the veal which was total grizzle. It took 30 minutes to show waitress how bad the veal was. I had her take it away. Wife asked that her food be boxed and we left. The meal was credited and we got a gift certificate...will probably return at some future date and hopefully the service and food will be better. read more

This food was very good, the drinks were standard but at an exceptional price. Actually the prices and the decor are at the same period. About 30 years ago, and that's a great time. Our waitress actually suggested something off the menus when asked not the standard it "all good". Food really was freshly made even though we came in about 45 min to closing. A friend and I went to Giovanni's earlier today to have a good time and catch up. Food and service from the server was wonderful but we were disappointed that the management was so unprofessional and rude to the staff. We felt uncomfortable that he was swearing and trying to intimidate the bartender. It made the experience uncomfortable and maybe the management needs a course on how to speak to your employees professionally and not just treat them like they can be replaced. I only say that from a business like prospective that if your employees/women feel threatened by a bigger man you will lose business and good employees. A part of me wanted to give the bartender a hug after how she was treated. Hope the owners makes this right or myself and a lot more people wont be back. read more

The service is horrible. The bartender has taken 20 minutes and still no drinks. The manager just came and said we're here at prime time (7pm). That's not acceptable to have excuses for 20 minutes for drinks. Still don't have our appetizers. A restaurant is both quality food and service. We were day by the piano. Nice music without being too interfering. The waitress has been incredibly helpful and pleasant. Sautéed calamari is the best I have tasted. Omg, so tender. The liquid it is in could be soup is that good. The garlic bread is very tender with garlic on it. They have freshly grated parmesan and olive oil. Salad was perfect. The leaves were all fresh. No chunks or a few day old veggies. I liked the shredded carrots. The rolls were too die for. Fresh, warm. We are waiting for dinner as I'm sitting doing this. Dover sole and walleye. We sat down at 6:30pm. It's now 7:55pm. We ordered the entree around 7pm. Water service was spotty. The dover sole was outstanding. It helped that it had a butter lemon sauce on the side. I had the walleye. While it was good, it had way too many bones for me (see pic). I also had the side of fettuccine Alfredo. The noodles were cooked perfect. I loved the Alfredo. The desserts were amazing. Cannelloni and a lemon cake. Wow. Incredible. I'll give 5 stars to the pianist. She really does a great job. I have her a nice tip for making the meal better. read more

I went there with friends. we were seated and we ordered drinks. it took a while to get them. we ordered dinner and waited over an hour for our soups to come. It was cold and didn't taste right. After another long delay our food came. I ordered linguini and clam sauce. There was no sauce and there was sand in the clams. All of the dinners were cold. We will never go there again. read more

Recently moving to Schererville, Indiana I yelped for a good steak, it's really funny though we didn't get steak, but we had a really excellent time here the weight staff was very professional prompts and gave great service. As we're getting older, my wife and I tend to share our meals, and this was no exception. She did order an appetizer and I ordered fish. I can't remember which type but it was a white fish and it was broiled with lemon and butter it came with a small side of pasta. We opted for Angel hair and Alfredo sauce. Starting with the bread, it came out piping hot And we enjoyed it with butter and olive oil and Parmesan. Very nice touch. Our salad was a little underwhelming, we opted for the homemade garlic, but it really didn't taste so good so I went and had Russian, which was phenomenal. I don't normally go so decadent, but it was really good. The lettuce was crisp. The vegetables were cold and crisp couldn't ask for a better salad. The fish was great cooked to perfection piping hot and delicious. I really appreciated the touch from the kitchen, we're water drinkers so I can't comment on the beverages, but it was an excellent dinner and my wife uses a walker so they accommodated us pretty nicely as well and I appreciate that They were setting up for a very large table, but we were finished eating and gone before they arrived so no problem there we can't wait to go back. It's not very pricey. I thought the prices were fair so we'll definitely come back this time. My wife wants a steak so I think we'll split a ribeye or perhaps a porterhouse. There is nothing I can say bad about this restaurant. When you enter the front door you are greeted with a smile and seated promptly. The wait staff is very attentive . I mostly go to this restaurant for date night or afternoon dates with my wife. The Cajun salmon is both of our favorites and the cook never disappoints.It is always cooked to perfection. I ordered butternut squash ravioli. It looked great on the plate but when I bit into the ravioli it was cheese, not squash. The waitress did not return to check on our table for quite some time. When she did I nicely explained that my ravioli was cheese, not butternut squash. She went to the kitchen and returned stating that the square ones are squash and the round ones are cheese so the order was correct. How insulting, as if I can't tell the difference. I cut one open to show her what was inside but she wasn't interested in discussing it further. What a disappointment! read more

Ambiance is nice and quaint but very dated. We went for lunch on a Thursday about 1:30 p.m. Restaurant was almost empty. Only about 4 other tables had customers. Waitress (Maggie) was very pleasant and attentive. My husband had alfredo with shrimp. He said the noodles were cooked well and the shrimp were delicious. The issue I have is that I ordered short ribs. Short ribs have a distinctive flavor. What I was served was probably chuck pot roast. Very disappointing serving something that was not ordered and trying to fool the customer into it being a different cut of beef. Needless to say, I have no confidence or trust in this restaurant. Well, not the greatest dining experience. I went Saturday night at about 7:30. The food was good, however the service has much to be desired. I was seated and it was 10 minutes before anyone even greeted me. I was about to get up and walk out. The server came by finally and said she'd be with me shortly, 10 minutes later she came back. Up to that point I had no water or anything else to drink. Throughout my meal she maybe came by twice to see how everything was or if I needed anything. I had to stop a bus boy to get drink refills. Three of us ate on March 3rd, 2025 at a booth in the bar area. We had Bruschetta, Stuffed Mushrooms and Oysters Rockefeller for appetizers which were all superb. Entrees were an 8 ounce filet mignon, mixed berry salad with salmon and vodka cream penne chicken. My filet was done medium well and spot on. Matthew, our server was great! We've been to Giovanni's a few times, but recently went last night and had a great time! I believe it may be under new ownership, and they are doing a great job! We had a group of 7 and were seated in the bar area by the piano, which was so fun. There was live music, a saxophone player who was great and funny! Our server was amazing! We all made changes/customizations to our meals and she got them all right and accommodated them all! The garlic rolls are incredible that they bring out at the beginning. I had the petite filet medallion special, which was so tender and perfectly cooked. Thursdays they have half price bottles of wine! They brought out a dessert for our birthday girl and then a round of shots! The service was amazing. We really had a great time. Their menu also has so many options. We frequent Giovanns's fairly regularly, 8 of us went on Sunday, April 6, 2025. We have enjoyed Giovannis nearly every time, and this time was no different. We sat near the musician, Terry Higgins, little loud where we sat, kind if hard to carry on a conversation, but he is awesome. Our server Trinity was amazing, took such great care of us ! Libations are always good. Everyone enjoyed their meals, all except for one who ordered the jumbo filet. My first thought is don't order a filet at an Italian restaurant. It barely fit into the filet category, i mean everyone who sampled it thought it was liver. Anyway, don't not go on account of that, just don't order the jumbo filet. Wow- the garlic rolls are out of this world- along with the garlic oil dipping sauce! My husband ordered the FRESH,stuffed with crabmeat, flounder- unbelievably delicious! I ordered the chicken Parmesan, which was good, but a little disappointing- maybe a tad dry? The service was wonderful . We came on a Friday night and we're seated right away. Live music was a plus! Discovered this amazing restaurant on Yelp. Celebrated my sister's birthday along with a few other friends. I can't stop raving about this little gem that I had never heard of & I'm really surprised. The food was delicious, priced reasonably, ambience so cozy & service impeccable! I've been to many Italian restaurants, Rosebud in Munster, Rosebud on Taylor Street & Rush st, Petterinos, Carmine's, Baccanalias on Oakley & Francisca's on Taylor to name a few, & in my opinion Giovanna's is top on my list for excellent Italian food, juicy steaks & service!
