I find it difficult to tell you how disappointed we are. 2 weeks ago, it became clear to us that Chip, our 15y/o, blind, parvo-surviving, total miracle Chihuahua was at his end. HBVC had been treating him for a recurring cough/wheeze for about 3 years. We'd reluctantly accepted that they were unable to diagnose the cause despite thousands of dollars of testing and treatment, and resigned ourselves to daily multiple medications to at least keep the cough and wheezing under some kind of control. We knew the medications wouldn't work indefinitely, and were as ready as you can be to say goodbye when it was clear that Chip's quality of life made that the best choice. That day came 2 weeks ago. We called the HBVC office at 9am and told the staff that we needed to speak to one of the vets about Chip's end-of-life. If you have pets you know just how awful that call is. Well, 90 minutes go by and no return call. So we called and asked again to speak to a vet about Chip. There's no way you could have spoken with us and not known how devastated we were. Again, no return call. We finally found an emergency vet and brought Chip in to hold him while we said goodbye. But from the people who had treated Chip for years, NOTHING. Finally, about 10 hours later, we got a call from the office. I can't tell you if it was a vet or not; they hung up without even leaving a message. And we haven't heard back from them since. We don't expect anyone else to love our dogs as much as we do, but we do expect our vets to at least respond during the most painful times in our dogs' lives. So we're finding a new vet for our other dogs. We won't forgive the extra suffering Chip went through that day and we won't forget that HBVC wasn't there for us. read more

I don't write reviews lightly, but I feel a responsibility to share this experience because no family should leave a veterinary office feeling the way we did. Our dog had been seen here for an ear infection and was prescribed medication that initially seemed to help. Less than two weeks later, he became much worse. He wasn't acting like himself, was clearly in distress, and we knew something was seriously wrong. Because it was a holiday and an emergency, we returned here despite hearing numerous warnings from people in our community about this practice. We wanted to believe those comments were unfair. Unfortunately, our experience proved otherwise. What stands out to me more than anything wasn't just the lack of answers--it was the complete absence of compassion. We walked into that office terrified. We were worried about our dog, emotional, and looking to the professionals for guidance and reassurance. Instead, every interaction felt cold, detached, and transactional. Not one person acknowledged how frightened we were. No one offered reassurance. No one showed even the smallest amount of empathy. It felt as though we were simply another invoice rather than a family desperately trying to help a beloved pet. As the bill climbed past $1,000, we were presented with X-rays, discussions about hospitalization, and an emergency neurology referral before basic bloodwork had even been performed. Once the bloodwork was finally run, it showed a significantly elevated white blood cell count and other markers indicating a serious infection. Even then, we left without anyone taking the time to explain what those results could mean or what the next logical step should be. We were told our dog urgently needed a neurologist, yet we were expected to make those emergency arrangements ourselves. When we asked if the clinic could make the call since they considered it so urgent, they refused. To make matters worse, the neurologist we were referred to was no longer even practicing there. Imagine leaving an emergency veterinary appointment with a very sick dog, no diagnosis, no meaningful explanation, no confirmed specialist, and the feeling that no one in the building truly cared. The next day, we took him to another veterinary practice that had been highly recommended. The difference was immediate. Before anyone even discussed tests, they listened. They examined him thoroughly. They treated us with kindness, patience, and genuine concern. They performed only the diagnostics they believed were necessary and quickly determined that he had a ruptured eardrum and a severe inner ear infection. He was in tremendous pain. Once he received the appropriate treatment, he improved almost immediately. Every veterinarian can encounter difficult cases, and no one expects perfection. What I do expect is compassion, thoughtful communication, and the feeling that the people caring for my pet actually care. We experienced none of that here. After this experience, I finally understand why so many people in our community told us not to come to this practice. I only wish we had listened. I sincerely hope no one else has to watch their pet suffer while feeling as unheard, dismissed, and unsupported as we did. read more

Very happy so far. Full disclosure I followed my vet there last year from another clinic and I trust her completely. I've been happy though. It can take till end of day for the doc to get back to me but she does call and appointments seem easy to make. Facility is clean and waiting room is comfortable. As a walk in on a Sunday, brought my 16 1/2 year old chihuahua who was at end of her life. they helped me with making her comfortable but the news was not good. They were able to work with me on price as I am a senior on a fixed income. they were thorough and understanding and compassionate. This was my first experience with losing a pet and they made it so much easier. This will be my vet now for my cats. read more

All the staff at HBVC were in love with my beautiful baby boy Bobandy and were always so sweet with him. He was not just a poochie, he was (and remains in our hearts) a beloved family member. Sadly Bobo deteriorated rapidly the last year of his life and took a turn for the worse on January 11th (2025) and I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go so he would not be suffering any longer. The staff all had tears in their eyes and were so helpful in giving me all the time and privacy I needed to say my final goodbye to my bestest buddy. He passed at 11:20am on January 15th. My precious kitty ,Tigers life & by doing so ,saved mine as well .To make long story short , by DR there keeping my cat for me ,That very same night I was attacked by a gang.If I had my kitty in the carrier with me we both would have been killed . I was able to escape ,but I never ever would have left my precious little Tiger behind & we both would have been killed but he was safe & sound at the clinic &I was able to get away .That never would have happened that way if I had my cat in the carrier or even if carrying him with out the carrier ,we would have never made our escape from certain death .Those thugs were killers & that's all they set out to do.I owe that clinic & everyone carrying for my kitty my very life .I love them all very dearly &owe them the world for saving my kitty and me .All who work at the clinic are the most beautiful loving people in the world who truly care .May God Bless every one of them always .I am forever in their debt. After paying 300$ for a checkup and basic shots i was told my cat was okay and had nothing to worry about . Shortly after we found worms after being assured she was okay. I called the office to get some answers and both of the disgusting receptionist had no answers and nothing but attitude. I was assured to get a call by the doctor before the end of their work day AND OF COURSE THEY LIED. I didn't receive any calls or emails with any answers to my question. The drs are great however they need to fix their scheduling system. I understand things happen but waiting 2 hours WITH a scheduled appointment every single time we go is unacceptable. I have been going to this clinic with all my dogs (poodles) for years. Dr. Weinstein was the original physician/owner but retired and left his establishment for a new breed of doctors. I got a new poodle puppy last year around September 2024 and she hurt her leg running through the house I immediately rushed her to a place that had been caring for all my dogs for over 15 years. On the day of this incident, I went there to take her to see the only doctor I trusted to care for her and was told by the young girls who sit at the front desk he was in surgery. Since my puppy wasn't screaming in pain I told them I would wait for him to finish up so she could see her doctor. I was so nervous and did not want her to be seen by any other doctor and it is clear from some of the reviews I read why I didn't. Well, those young girls who are nowhere near my age and I'm 65 yrs. old began to talk to me in a condescending manner which I have noticed is their norm towards a certain culture (black American) of people. Crossbay has a reputation for being prejudiced and I can admit you can feel it often when you're greeted by these young girls at the front desk. As a retiree of the NYPD and holding several honors and degrees, I feel these young girls have not walked in my shoes therefore I refuse to let them tell me how to tie my laces. Before this visit, I have always made payments with my debit card and for some reason, they require (me) to give them my driver's license and download it into their system without your permission or authority. Found another vet but I had to call Howard Beach Animal Clinic to get my baby dog record. They never told me they were going to charge me for the record and went into my account and charged me a fee for one short form. It was short because she was only less than a year old and didn't have much of a record except the one which I paid for an initial checkup. I took them to court because they should not have kept my financial information on their computer but they did and I was very upset because I informed them to remove it from their system and they didn't. In May 2025 the case was set and I went but they never showed up that alone tells me much more about their obeying court orders which in my opinion shows they don't care about the law. Although I was there for the case I told the judge "I no longer want to proceed with this case because I am so much better than the proprietors of this clinic and it won't be long before they will have to face their unprofessionalism and wrongdoings. It was bittersweet but I will never stand for young girls no matter what culture disrespecting me or talking to me like I am a nobody. I've done more than they can ever imagine in my lifetime to help people no matter what race because I was sworn in to do just that. Shame on you Dr. "R" Your staff needs to take classes on public relations of some sort or perhaps you should hire more mature individuals to run your front office. My first visit here with my cats. It's usually always better to make an appointment as most vets charge a little extra for walk in and this place is no exception. There's a sign in the office saying so as well. I made an appointment and I had to change it a few days before to a different time and they were accomadating. It's a small waiting area with a TV. It was pretty busy when I was there but the wait wasn't too bad. We saw the Dr, Dr Francin, I believe was her name. Very nice and polite and did a quick check up and gave them some shots. The nurse was also super nice as well. Definitley a good vibe here. There's also a back door to leave thru as the waiting area can be crowded. Once we were thru, we paid and got their shot certificates. It was just under $100 for each of my cats. Not a bad price at all. They also have boarding services here as well. Today my pet Louis got a dental cleaning. Dr. Hammer was nice courteous. She answered all my questions and she was so patient with me. Everyone in the office was & nice and so professional. What really pushes me to write this review is the fact Dr. Hammer was honest with the cost. She could've easily overcharged me for work that she didn't perform or teeth she did not extract. However, she only billed me for work that she did. They just earned another loyal customer Update, 10/03/19 today the pregnant receptionist ruined it for me. She started arguing with a couple of customers including me for no reason. She's supposed to be a manager behaving worst than those animals at the clinic. In addition, Dr Raphael tried to justify her behavior by telling me that the receptionist maybe having a bad day because it's tough gig. Never again, so please take your beloved pet/family somewhere else where you are welcomed. It's a shame because the doctors there are pretty good but the girls at the front desk are rude and always ready to argue with customers. read more

I've been coming here since my pup was 6 months old. He is now 12 (still can't believe it) Dr. Weinstein who is now retired was his vet and owns the clinic. He was such a good guy, and I totally miss him. I've had some encounters with a few other vets since then and it's been and okay experience. No one compares to the OG lol. I like coming here because I trust them with my pet and I've never really had any issues. They are pricey (but hen again I've never gone anywhere else to compare). I wish vet visits didn't run me $200-400 every time I came but I love my pup and I want the best care for him. They are still doing no I. Person stay for the owners, meaning they call you and take the animals, when finished they bring them back out. Prior to the pandemic they would allow you to stay inside. In the summer it's okay to sit outside by the bench or even just stand around but in the winter it would get a bit chilly and you'll need to go back in the car. All and all I recommend them and miss Dr. Weinstein lol but everyone deserves retirement so I hope he's doing well and enjoying himself. read more

Angela who I believe is the office manager or should be, is just an Angel for real! She also always prompt so kind and patient . I'm totally an overbearing parent and never has she made me feel uncomfortable or that I was bothering them. Dr. Raphael and Dr. Rodriguez are the two doctors that see Cala. They are both again so kind and so knowledgeable and always give forth their best intentions. Besides being good at their jobs they are great people with excellent bedside manner. So is it the patients or the facility??Appointment wait times are out of control, very long wait times. Which in turn lowers the quality, they are all about the $$$. You still need to wait outside you cannot go in with your pet. The doctors will call you, tell you that blood work $$ and xrays should be taken and gives you prices for exam$$, blood work$$ & xrays$$, they ask you, "are you okay with that?" Of course you want to know whats wrong with your pet so you agree. BEWARE WHEN THEY CALL BACK with the treatment or injections or medications. GET A BREAKDOWN of every single charge or you will end the visit with a 600/700$ bill. Not just the amounts the doctor quoted you on the phone. Disgraceful! Unethical! read more

I went to get surgery for my dog who had a pyometra. The original doctor I spoke to said she would perform the surgeries then passed it along to one of her colleague. They did a horrible job closing her up. The staples were hanging loose. in 3 days 4 staples came out. On the Day 4 she was barking and her incision opened up exposing her insides. Causing me SOOOO much stress and anxiety. They chose a different closing procedure, more secure one the second time. I felt totally SCAMMED. On top of that I had to pay almost $800 extra to fix there mistake!!! For a expensive, Poor, Careless surgeries. I would never go back here or recommend this Clinic. read more

If I could give 0 star I would. This is not the first time, that I call with an emergency, and they tell me sure you can bring him in, but then tell me they can't see him right away and I'll need to wait for unknown period of time. Then I tell them I can't wait a long time because I'm in the middle of work, and they tell me to try back tomorrow morning, regardless of my dog suffering and needing to be seen. Every time I go, with or without appt I'm waiting 1.5 hour minimum and although I live 2 blocks away, they can't hold my spot and call me to come in, they prefer to have me wait in the car in front for 2 hours. horrible customer service, STAY AWAY! read more

Went there for shots on all 3 fur babies & was overcharged & waited almost an hour an a half for a appt i came early too! The only Great thing was this Dr Simon who was the best thing there! He was gentle & not in a rush even thou it was the end of the day! Also sat and talked to me thru everything! Hope they hold onto him! I think this is a remarkable practice. My parents have been taking our old dog here ever since I can recall. At first there was a seasoned doctor there and eventually today I met their proteges. They were very sensitive to my family's needs. I think they have one of the hardest jobs. It takes time so I am happy to wait actually. I would rather have another neighbor within Queens or Nassau or New York spend the time they need with the doctor and find out the best decision for them even if it means I need to wait. Good and caring doctors and their staff are rare these days but they are here at the Howard Beach Animal Clinic. I feel so happy to have went. I don't know if we will find out what the condition is but I feel like my dog and family are truly cared for here, to me that is what matters. read more

Not a good experience. At first, the receptionist requested me to put MY date of birth on the form. When I asked WHY? She didn't explain to me and she just repeat her request again. I feel not comfortable to do it. Besides, when I shown them the discount coupon, the receptionist refused to take and said they printed out the invoice already. She is rude and not smart. I think they just don't want new customer to go back. The waiting room is small and make sure don't sit on the chair. I refused to sit down, as dog and cat pee soaked into the chairs. See the picture and you will know how terrible. The doctor was ok but maybe he was too busy, so not like the doctor in the other place can explain and tell the owner how to do. Tips: don't sit on the chair and prepare your questions before meet the doctor. read more
