Howard Beach Bagel Cafe is a standard NYC deli, offering a large menu of made to order sandwiches, sliced deli meats/cheeses, salads, grocery items, etc. Prices are reasonable, and they offer delivery via apps like Postmates and DoorDash. My delivery order arrived quickly, and carefully packaged. I got a large coffee, which for some reason already had (way too much) cream and sugar added to it. I drink my coffee black, so this was disappointing. Their Rainbow Bagel was decent, but had a distinct raw dough aftertaste, and a plastic-y lamination on the exterior. The Egg Bagel was tasty, but very dry. Both the strawberry and vegetable cream cheeses were delicious, but there needed to be twice as much of them. I submitted an order for pickup online through this place's website. Per the website instructions, I waited about 30 minutes before arriving to pick up the order. When I arrived I was told that I never placed an order online despite having the confirming text and email ready to show the person. They confirmed that was their establishment . The staff at this establishment couldn't be bothered and told me that they never received the order, despite me having a $60 charge on my bank account. To be honest, the bagels here are so good. After I bring them somewhere, people always ask me to bring them again, including large orders regularly for friends out of state. The only reason I continue to go is because it's good. Many of the employees are also very kind and helpful, but I definitely don't go as often as I used to. Unfortunately, I have tried many times to order ahead to pick up, particularly when I'm in a rush or about to take a 4 hour drive to visit friends, and not only is the pickup service terrible, but I've never once gotten a correct order. I literally stand directly at and beneath the pickup sign at the register and I've been looked at and ignored and even looked past to customers behind me before being helped. The person at pickup completely ignores me every time. When ordering ahead a dozen bagels, I'm always given the incorrect bagel choices. Once I flat out asked if my coffee was in the bag, they said yes, and it wasn't there. This also happened once with cream cheese. And there have been times they cannot accommodate a request, which is fine, but they'll just do something else and not inform me until I see it's wrong and address it. Once, they told me that I never wrote something I requested and I pointed out that they crossed it out with black marker on the receipt attached to my order. I guess they thought I wouldn't notice...? The order ahead option and service really need to be improved. I feel disrespected every time and it's caused me to give them less business since I don't always have time to wait and will no longer order ahead. read more

We've been here before but this was years ago and the food was okay then. However, we came here yesterday (1/13/22) to grab some sandwiches real fast because we were starving & needed someone quick to eat. BEWARE......the prices they have posted are NOT the prices they charge you for the sandwiches (they haven't updated their menu boards) according to one of the ladies that works there. We ordered 2 hot pastrami's with mustard on a bagel, that cost 10.99 each ( that was the correct amount). The sandwiches came with a pickle & your choice of a side salad We also ordered 1 Reuben on a hero, the price on the menu board states 10.99 plus 1.00 for the hero......that should have been 11.99 but they charged 12.95 We ordered 1 Cordon blue on hero ( 10.99 plus 1.00 for hero) but were charged 12.95. Finally I ordered a Ham, with lettuce & mayo on a hero (10.99 plus 1.00 for hero) but was charged 12.95. We also bought 2 Arizona drinks that were 3.00 ( Arizona's are usually 1.00 but whatever) and 1 large coffee w/milk which was 2.79. According to the menu board prices the total for the sandwiches should have been 57.95 but we're charged 60.83. It's not that much more money but Its disconcerting that the deli will charge you whatever price they want other than the stated prices that are listed on the menu board Now for the food review, the hot pastramis w/mustard on a bagel was definitely the best sandwiches we bought. The bagel was perfect with the hot moist, juicy pastrami..... could have used a little bit more mustard though. The potato salad was okay but needed more mayo & salt. The taste was a little bland. The Reuben was HUGE disappointment, the hero bread was fine but the little bit of meat on the sandwich was dry......really dry, tough & rubbery plus the coleslaw on the sandwich was just awful. I should have read the menu description (that's on me) but I assumed that the Reuben would have the classic ingredients of corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut & russian dressing. HOWEVER the Bagel Cafe's version was supposed to have (according to the NON- updated menu board) hot pastramis, corned beef, melted swiss & coleslaw with russian dressing. WHAT I RECEIVED was a tiny amount of dried out, tough, rubbery corned beef meat (no pastrami meat like the menu states), some sort of white cheese that didn't taste like swiss cheese, terrible tasteless coleslaw with NO Russian dressing anywhere on the sandwich. I also ordered the 3 bean salad which I would NOT recommend to anyone. It looked very colorful & delicious in the case but was tasteless. It looked like they just threw whatever extra ingredients they had left over and called it a 3 bean salad. The Cordon Bleu sandwich also wasn't good at all either. It was supposed to have chicken cutlet, ham, swiss cheese & russian dressing BUT what we received was a dried out tasteless chicken cutlet, NO ham, swiss cheese & a tiny bit ( technically a drop) of russian dressing. However, they did include a case of the "Runs" (diarrhea) with the sandwich and a container that of the tasteless potato salad. The Ham, lettuce with mayo hero was also a disappointment, like seriously......how much can you screw up a ham sandwich????? There was a tiny amount of ham, a HEAPING mound of lettuce ( enough to make a large salad) and a tiny smear of mayonnaise. And of course the tasteless potato salad. I wish I had taken pictures like I usually do but we were all ravenously starving because we are gutting/renovating an apartment. On a good note, the pickles were crisp , delicious & the large coffee was very hot and very good I don't drink/make coffee at all, when the cashier told me I could make the coffee myself ( behind me at the coffee station) I must have had a "deer in the headlights" expression on my face because the young lady immediately offered to make it for me......Thank God The place was very busy and the employees were extremely nice & helpful. The place seems to have a very busy thriving business & most of the customers seemed to be locals that live in the area. All in all, I would NOT recommend this cafe/deli to anyone and we won't be returning especially after my poor daughter was sitting on the toilet several times yesterday & for quite a long time each time after eating ONLY half of the Cordon bleu hero . Her stomach was bothering her for the rest of the day and this seemed very odd because this particular daughter has a "cast iron stomach".
